Squares

I learnt a new phrase recently: WiP, or Work in Progress. I do like to have a few of these on the go but I think my WiP situation may be getting out of hand. I just keep starting new things and then another tempting idea comes along, so I start that, and before you know it I'm staring at a box of fabric, yarn and embroidery thread wondering when I will ever find the time. And there is a bit of a theme emerging from all this business...squares.

I am still LOVING this Winterwoods ABC cross stitch, but it is very hard on my eyes. I should probably work on this during the daylight hours but that is not really possible, so I do it in the evening. My poor eyes!

I am still practising granny squares on nasty acrylic yarn which manages to feel squeaky and fluffy and split all at the same time. I am still not happy with my tension so I need to work on that before breaking into the good yarn.

And while rummaging for this cheap yarn in the attic, I came across a bag of twenty nine pink wool knitted squares. I made a very simple knitted cot blanket when I was on maternity leave before before Bella was born, and I think these were intended as a border of somekind. I found knitting these ten by ten squares incredibly soothing, and spent most of that time lying on the sofa, knitting and watching Law and Order box sets.

I'm not sure what to do with them. I may knit up the rest of the wool and make a patchwork cushion, pink on one side, multicoloured on the other.

And I am planning a patchwork quilt for Bella's bed, in pinks and greens and, like a child, I can't resist cutting out squares and playing with them even though it will be MONTHS before I get round to actually sewing anything.

I am out of control. No more projects! (Oh, except the three tea towels my friend Gemma asked me to make, I will start those right now.)

  1. omg! you ARE out of control! LMAO
it's so much fun though isn't it? and so many great ideas ut there. when i started crocheting the worst thing i did was peruse ravelry (you on there right?) and other blogs, because although inspiring it got me starting new projects before finishing the WiP. i can't imagine how terrible i would be if i sewed too!

    1. I'm not on Ravelry - I'm not really sure what it is to be honest, but i keep seeing links to it on other blogs. I should investigate. (oh no, not another enjoyable but ultimately time wasting internet past time...~)

  2. My brother bought me a daylight crafting light for Christmas a few years ago. It cost a lot of money but is brilliant for when your trying to get things done in the evening. Lovely WiPs. x

    1. That is such a good idea! I think I just need a good task light or anglepoise lamp - I hate having the overhead lights on. I need to look into it! x

    1. Hello, nice to meet you! Thanks for stopping by and for such a kind comment. I love that Ode dinner service - we have lots more of it up in the loft that we don't use daily - egg cups, soups bowls with lids, vinegar bottles...it's great!

  8. I think its crucial to your health to have more than one thing on the go because they all require different hand movements and so by having a variety you don't stress your body as much .... that's my excuse any way. When I plan I actually choose projects based on how long they take - so that I have some quick projects and some slow ones. That way I get the finishing kick fairly regularly. But when all said and done unless it is your income we do this for pleasure and so we should just carry on doing what feels good .... enjoy! xx

    1. Maggie, that's brilliant, it's all for health reasons! You're right, unless you need to earn a living for it then who cares how long it takes... x

  9. I have a policy ... once I hit ten WIPs (or should that be WsIP?) I only allow myself to start another when one gets finished. Yes, I usually have TEN knitting and stitching projects on the go! Crazy, huh? But they do say variety is the spice of life :D

  10. Lovely to see glimpses of your WIPs - don't know why it happens but it just does and I've found that sometimes it actually helps to get things completed to have several things on the go rather than just one. Means I don't get bored and give up totally on something but can leave it for a bit and then come back to it again. So really and truly it's a necessity! Love the quilt squares - happy playing with fabrics! E x

  12. Loving the cross stitch. I struggle to do mine in the dark, so am waiting for the lighter nights, not even a daylight bulb hurts. All your posts came through in one go in my reader today, very odd!
