Durham

John grew up in Durham and always used to complain about the tourists that were everywhere in the city centre, putting up the prices in the coffee shops and car parks, annoying the locals. Of course, as often happens, we take for granted the places of our childhood until we move away and realise that they are actually quite lovely.

Durham is a beautiful city. Small, charming, full of very old buildings, an excellent university and Durham Cathedral, a spectacular nine hundred year old church. We spent a very pleasant morning being tourists, drinking coffee, wandering around the winding, hilly streets that were at first packed with people...

then completely deserted.

We walked up to the cathedral and castle and joined the throngs of other tourists. I could not resist taking a picture of this old red phone box and leaning post box. So stereotypically English!

Two lovely new books were purchased and I spent a very relaxing afternoon drinking tea and alternately browsing my books, and sewing.

I am really enjoying this little break, mostly because we are spending time with family, but it is also very nice to have a rest from cooking, washing, clock watching. The children have mostly entertained themselves (or chased the dog) and it is peaceful.

  1. Durham is lovely, but I haven't been there in about 20 years sadly. Beautiful pictures. Oh and I bought Homespun Style yesterday too! x

  2. Gorgeous pictures Gillian! I love the cobblestone and muted tones of the buildings... so pretty! Also I have major book envy... waiting on my Homespun Style to arrive. It feels like the postman is keeping it too himself for another bit!

  3. Hello there.

I don't think that we have ever been to Durham. It sounds like just our sort of place - old buildings an ancient cathedral, books and tea....

    1. Hello Monica. It is a beautiful place - especially when the tourists have gone and it is quiet.

  4. Wonderful pictures - the telephone box/post box picture is idyllic. It sounds like you had a wonderful break. Am a bit jealous actually, we normally go away at Easter and I am missing that break from the house & normal life. Durham is looking beautiful x

  5. Loving the sampler! Did anyone ever figure out what the "o" was supposed to be? I never saw where Alicia answered everyone's question about it. Thanks~Jan

    1. Hello Jan, thanks for stopping by.

I didn't even realise the O was missing until someone said "where is the o?" I think it is the tree stump between n and p. Don't know if that's the official version but it makes sense to me!

    1. I have made good progress with the sampler this week because I have spent a large amount of time sitting on my ample bottom and sewing. Work will halt when real life starts up again... xxx

  11. I have the homespun book and like it very much. Thanks to your more recent posts I've now added The Little Paris Kitchen to my wish list, your cooking and baking from it looks delicious. I've not watched any of the series, I hope I've not missed it all!
    Lovely blog by the way.

  12. Never been to Durham, but would love to ... a bit of a hike from South Devon, though! Lovely photos and yes, the telephone kiosk is so typically British (or should that be English? And saying that without wishint to upset our Scottish, Welsh and Irish neighbours!)

    1. If you're going to travel all that way you must make a holiday of it and visit Northumberland, home of many castles and pretty towns and stunning beaches. I am assuming they have the old-style red phone boxes in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. I don't think you offended anyone though. ;-) x
