Thank you so very, very much for all your kind and thoughtful comments on Monday's post. They gave me a lot to think about. I think I should emphasise that we are happy. I am lucky to have John, to have two healthy children, somewhere safe to live. We are lucky that John has a job when, during this bleak economic climate we are experiencing in the UK, so many do not. So many things to be thankful for. So although Leeds may not be where I want to spend the next twenty years, we are here now, with no immediate plans to move, and life is good. There are so many positive things about living where we do. I think we need to rediscover Leeds, and Yorkshire, as a family. I have created a happy little bubble in my home and garden, but we could get out and about much more.
I think it's because my children are at the start of their time in education that I feel this sudden urgency, it feels a bit "now or never". But none of us know what tomorrow holds or where we may be in a years time. I must enjoy the present, not wish it away. I am also aware that the kind of distances I am talking about are nothing to those who live in the US or Australia or South Africa. At least I don't have to get on a plane to see my family! It seems that many of us have moved around for various reasons and I did so enjoy reading all of your stories in the comments. Thank you. You are all lovely.

More good things to make me feel happy and lucky...blogging giveaways! I won two (woo-hoo!) in the last couple of months and, while I was on holiday, some little parcels arrived. How nice to see these packages lying among the bills on the door mat when I got home on Saturday.
The first is from Greer of typically red. Back in May, Greer hosted a a very bloggy morning tea, a week of tea drinking and baking and giveaways to raise money for cancer research, prevention and patient support, and she raised an impressive AUD$860. Do pop over to Greer's blog if your don't already know it; as well as being a busy mother of three young children and knitter-extraordinaire, she also takes stunning photographs and writes about her life in Australia.
I was lucky enough to win a pair of beautiful, orange cable-knit mitts and a matching mug warmer.
Aren't they just gorgeous? Here I am wearing them:
I adore them. I am already imagining wearing them in the Autumn with a cosy jumper while walking through fallen leaves.
And that mug warmer...
...perfect for drinking mulled wine out of a glass without burning my hands. Hmm, new hand warmers and the thought of mulled wine - it's enough to get me wishing the nights would start drawing in.
But it's still Summer. And my other giveaway prize is the most bright, summery, cheerful and altogether useful thing:
A new sunglasses case! From the lovely Gina of Rosie Hearts. Gina makes and sells the most fabulous cases for glasses, mobile phones, iPads and Kindles, and key rings too. Her stuff is beautifully made with a fun, humorous feel - have a look at her shop on notonthehightstreet.com. Thank you very much Gina! This case is a huge improvement on the nasty black polyester one that came free with my sunglasses, and has saved them from a summer of lying scratched and dusty in the bottom of my handbag.
I am starting to think I ought to join in with the giveaway fun - I have been very lucky and would like to share the love. But what to give away? Suggestions please. And please remember that I do not have Greer's knitting skills or Gina's sewing abilities! x
I'm so glad you like it, thank you for the mention! Those gloves are beautiful and would be good for chilly sewing days! Xx
ReplyDeleteNo, thank you! I seriously love the glasses case and it's had lots of compliments. x
DeleteHaving been the lucky recipient of 2 of your beautiful tea towels I think the answer is obvious...
ReplyDeleteYes, tea towels! Phew, no knitting or crochet involved. I could crochet something but there would be a six month delay on it!
Deletecongrats! you did well!
ReplyDeleteYay for giveaways, spreading the blogging love!
DeleteSo glad it all arrived safely across the seas. Fab modelling, by the way. Thanks for your kind words xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks for your gorgeous knits! There's a lot of love for your mitts here - I can't wait to show them off in the playground when the schools go back in September. x
DeleteWhat brilliant prizes, those gloves look so cosy, it's easy in this weather to start thinking about autumn days! Pretty glasses case, definitely need one of those. x
ReplyDeleteI love receiving good mail. Ie fun parcels not bills and junkmail. It makes me so happy!
DeleteWell done, your prizes are fabulous! x
ReplyDeleteHope all this good luck with blogging doesn't ruin my chances of winning the lottery... ;-) xx
DeleteWhat lovely prizes you lucky thing. You have summer(!) and winter covered all in one post! x
ReplyDeleteIs it really tragic that I am already looking forward to autumn so I can wear my new mitts? Although when we have such gloomy summers it's not hard to look forward to autumn...
DeleteOoohhhh - that's a nice bit of cable you have there...well done.
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed your last post - that feeling of being stuck can be one of the worst feelings ever, I certainly know for sure - but one thing I am sure of the right thing will happen at the right time and until then we make the most of what we have and hang on in there....in a healthy way of course.
Take care and all the best,
Nina x
Thanks Nina. Now I've got it off my chest I am feeling very at peace with it all. We are here for now and life is good. :-)
DeleteI think that sometimes just reminding yourself that this is your happy every after and that re positioning yourself really helps.
ReplyDeleteLove your wins. I would love to win one of your tea towels
"Re-positioning" - I like that. Thanks Jen.
DeleteI think I will do tea towels - they are fun to do and easy to post. x
Yorkshire is such a beautiful county!
ReplyDeleteand I have one of Gina's glasses cases...hubby bought it for me for Christmas!
xxx
Well done to your hubby!! He clearly has excellent taste! Yorkshire is a beautiful county, I need to get up to the Dales again, they are spectacular.
DeleteLucky lady! Yorkshire is lovely. Up North has some beautiful places. I miss the lake district like mad and if we moved back then I would want to live there. Go rediscover :) xx
ReplyDeleteI will! Love the Lakes. Never been with the kids which is silly really as they are only about 90 mins away so no reason why we don't go more. Maybe because life gets in the way! x
DeleteWhat fantastic giveaway wins. Lucky you! Those knit handwarmers look super cozy and perfect for Fall.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Leeds, my daughter found this quote the other day and it's perfect for me to read when I start swooning over farwaway places: "When the grass looks greener on the other side, it means it's time to water your own grass." Sounds like that's what you intend to do!
I like this very much
DeleteJenny, that quote is perfect. It sums up what I need to do. Your daughter is very wise!
DeleteThe hand warmers look so awesome! Love the colour. You're so lucky!
ReplyDeleteI know! The colour is fabulous. I am in love with them.
DeleteWhat fab freebies!! Well done, you. This is such a nice idea, and I am sure your tea towels/ shopping bags or some baking delicacies would attract a big crowd of keen winners. I am so chuffed with all the beautiful hand made presents you have given me.
ReplyDeleteI really like Jenny's quote about our own green grass that needs watering: it calls us back to reality and out of all the "what if...' wondering which so often makes us unappreciative of the 'here and now'.
Good to hear that you are happy where you are!! I am very happy that you live close.
I love Jenny's quote - it neatly sums up all that I have been thinking this past week. We are here, we are happy, life needs to be lived joyfully and to the full!
DeleteTea towels and bags are the way to go I think, as easy to post. xx
Lovely handmade gifts you have there. Sounds like a good plan to reconnect with and explore your local area. I think we're in our own bubble here but a soon to be empty nest (gulp) might give us just the jolt we need to be a bit more outward looking.
ReplyDeleteI think that the end of the baby years and the start of the school years will give us a renewed enthusiasm to re-discover our local area. I think I have a bit of Yorkshire fatigue.
DeleteWhat gorgeous prizes ... the mitts are fab ... just wanted to let you know that I added a link to you in my most recent blog post ... hope you don't mind! Bee xx
ReplyDeleteNot at all! Will pop over and have a look, thanks. :-) xx
DeleteWell done, what great prizes. I love that mug warmer. Rediscovering the area sounds like a great plan. xx
ReplyDeleteI am loving the mug warmer and already looking forward to using it. It was National Yorkshire Day yesterday and I drank a half of Leeds Pale Ale in the pub tonight - get me embracing my local area! x
DeleteLove the colour of your prizes - the handwarmers would go with a poncho I'm going to knit, and as for the hot pink glasses case ... fab! What about a friendship bracelet for a giveaway, I thought they were lovely. xx
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely idea Mags, I hadn't thought of that, but will add it to the parcel of happy things that I am dreaming up! x
DeleteThese are amazing! Love the colour! x
ReplyDeleteHi there Fritha, thanks for stopping by. I know, I got lucky. How I wish I could knit/sew like that! x
