My goodness, it's been a busy week here. In my panic to make sure we weren't bored, I have over filled all our days and I think I need to take it down a notch next week. The evenings have been packed too; Monday night dinner with friends, Tuesday I went running, Wednesday was book group and last night I went to the most wonderful local Turkish restaurant for a meal. Tonight I am looking forward to catching up with John, watching The Bridge (how I love gloomy Scandinavian crime dramas!), and having an early night. The kids and I have just returned from a very relaxed picnic at Kirkstall Abbey and now I need to tackle the looming Ironing Pile of Doom which I have been ignoring all week. It is three foot high. It's gotten so out of hand that I can't face even ironing one thing because, frankly, what's the point?
Anyway, I have some sort-of finishing touches to the living room I wanted to show you today. Finishing touches sounds a bit smug really, a bit "Ta da, my home is complete!", which of course it never is. This post should really be called Making The Living Room Look Less Like The Inside Of A Battleship, and more like a happy room to cosy up in.
We finally found something we liked to hang above the fireplace. Two prints of vintage travel posters we bought from the National Railway Museum in York for £5 each. I put them in two old Habitat frames I had in our bedroom and ordered some mounts which were around £6 each. So a very thrifty bit of wall art, all in all, and see how we deliberately chose local rail destinations? Also, in the pub last night, I drank a pint of Leeds Pale Ale and very delicious it was too. If embracing your local area means buying stuff for the house and drinking beer then I am definitely the woman for the job.
Some bay leaves in Kilner jars and Russian dolls add colour to the top of the mantle piece. I'm not sure if I like the arrangement. John chose the clock and I'm still not sure about it...
I ordered this garland from littlenestbox on Etsy a while back and, after hanging it in about ten different places, I finally settled on the pussy willow next to the fireplace.
I love the contrast of the bright neon colours against the twig-like stems and grey walls. There are some seriously lovely things in Charmaine's shop, her nursery decorations are enough to get me a bit broody.
Holiday souvenirs now...some cedar of Lebanon cones found by my father in law while on holiday last week.
He works with wood for a living and assured me that no harm was done to the tree in the making of my coffee table arrangement.
Aren't they beautiful? I just love that pale grey-green colour and the spiral pattern. I think eventually they turn brown.
Proof that the most appealing patterns and designs occur naturally within the trees and flowers around us.
Have a lovely weekend, whatever you are up to. Pottering, crochet and hanging out with Bella and Angus is what I have planned for tomorrow. On Sunday, my sister and her children are coming to stay and we are all very excited. It will be hugely enjoyable but I need to steel myself for the high noise and chaos levels which we will experience next week. Four children, aged between three and five, all in one house...let's just hope it's sunny.

Please could you come and sort my house? I feel overwhelmed with cleaning and bits of broken toys everywhere. After 3 weeks of visitors I have had enough. Your home looks beautiful and I love the colour of the walls. Have a great weekend xxx
ReplyDeleteOh Andrea, if you could see the state of the rest of my house...the ironing pile, the toys EVERYWHERE, the dust... It seems the more tidy the living room is, the messier the rest of the house is. Weird.
DeleteHear hear... Both on the please come tidy ours and the tidy living room chaos elsewhere front. Our biggest nemesis at the moment is baby washing and stil orange of all things baby!
DeleteStil orange= storage in iPhone language...groan.
DeleteMine are 3 and 5 and washing and toy storage still seems to dominate my daily life! x
DeleteLove the posters - its looking great.
ReplyDeleteTurkish resturant sounds yum - you'll have to tell me where it is.
Have a lovely weekend with your family. I really need some downtime this weekend too but its looking less and less likely....
Downtime is good, we all need it to save our sanity! Actually, I feeling surprisingly chipper, must be the break from the school run. :-) xx
DeleteWow! Love the geometric garland. Such a bright unexpected touch! You could throw something like that anywhere in the house to jazz it up a bit.
ReplyDeleteThe lebanon cones look so cool. I've never seen anything like that. Do they have that pine smell to them?
I know, I would like to order a few more and just drape them everywhere! My husband may put his foot down though...
DeleteI've just sniffed the cones to see - they have a very subtle pine smell, and they are also incredibly heavy, I guess because they are still full of sap and haven't dried out yet.
I really love the garland - like you said, the colors really stand out against the grey walls and add cheer to the room. The Cedar of Lebanon cones are incredible! I've never seen them before and I'm in love with the spiral design and the color. You're right, nature is an amazing artist.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you!
I love those cones - I think I will be quite sad when they eventually lose their colour. Happy weekend to you too - I have slowly become addicted to the Olympics and think I may spend a lot of the weekend in front of the tv!
DeleteSounds like a great week - I'm afraid I'm obsessed with the olympics and doing little else! The house pictures look great and I just love the cones - I've never seen any like that. xx
ReplyDeleteOlympics fever is slowly taking over this household too, despite none of us being that bothered a week ago. It's not all I can talk about. Never watched so much sport in my life! x
DeleteLove all these finishing touches. It amazes and delights me the ideas that the younger generation of women have in enhancing their homes (I say this from the grand old age of ... well, far too many years on the clock!) I love those cones and the pussy willow decorated with a very pretty garland, adding colour but not any heaviness to the room. I have a board in the summerhouse, just some wood which husband painted to match the woodwork of the summerhouse and on that I attach postcards with Blu-tack, so that each spring/autumn I can change the postcards to ones which reflect the season. I love those old railway posters!
ReplyDeleteMargaret P
I like you idea of changing the postcard displays with the seasons, I may have to steal that! I have always liked playing house. As a child I spent more time tidying and arranging the furniture in my Sindy house than playing with the dolls.
DeleteThese old railway posters are great aren't they? I've just got a couple from Norfolk, love the colours in them! Ada :)
ReplyDeleteThe colours are so soft, I really like them. I would like more, I love vintage travel posters.
DeleteLove your new pictures ... your whole living room looks great ... I have so much to do around here but I think the fun is in never really finishing then, you can change things up whenever you fancy ... hope you have a lovely time next week ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, but you should know that the rest of the house is a mess! So much housework and shopping to do in the next 24 hours... xx
DeleteLove the finishing touches to your living room - all things I guess that make one pause in passing and enjoy either because of their colour, or shape or smell - you have a lovely sure touch with these things. Enjoy you exuberant weekend! Am sure a huge amount of fun will be had even if the sun isn't out but I hope it will be - we haven't had enough of it yet this summer! E x
ReplyDeleteOh thank you! I am in denial about the forthcoming events - sitting here in my dressing gown with a cup of tea when I really, really need to find some motivation to get going! Oh, just ten more minutes...
DeleteDear Gillian
ReplyDeleteI like the clock as it adds a quirky touch to the mantlepiece and looks both modern and retro at the same time (I am very fond of 'quirky'). Your travel pictures are lovely too. I hope you managed to get the ironing done, or at least to make a small dent in the Pile!
Best wishes
Ellie
Hi Ellie - I did all the ironing yesterday morning while watching the rowing. I have never enjoyed ironing so much and even made the last few items take ages so I could justify my time in front of the tv! Gillian x
DeleteThe finishing touches look fab! Isn't it great how just a few things can do some much to brighten up a room. (Love the garland too - really must order one of those!) x
ReplyDeleteThanks Col. I do love fiddling about with bits and bobs around the house, nothing makes me happier. I should thank you for the garland - it was the feature on your blog that made me buy one, otherwise I'd never have seen it! x
DeleteYour house looks so clean and tidy ... Have a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh Sopa, if you could see it now...it's such a mess, evidence of a busy weekend I guess! x
DeleteI love it!! The framed posters are great and I love that they are from your area! And the jars filled with bay leaves are very lovely and creative. The garland is pretty, too...love the colors! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I always think it looks boring so it's nice to have someone else say nice things! :-)
DeleteI love those travel posters. I bought one of Cornwall, which reminds me I must frame it! So fun to see a garland in your home too, I really like the contrast against the willow too x
ReplyDeleteI am loving the garland and it is getting lots of compliments. x
