All of a sudden it's October. Where did September go? I am still adjusting to the pace of life here with Angus at nursery. I thought this new phase would bring me hours more time to myself, time to read and craft and blog and make...how foolish of me! I have two hours to myself on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, during which time I go to the supermarket, run errands, do housework, cooking, ironing, basically all the jobs which ensure the smooth running of a happy house.* On Tuesdays and Thursdays, after helping at Bella's school, I have an hour before I have to set off to collect Angus at 11.15am. I wonder if it's worth even going home? But I do, because it's amazing what you can achieve in one hour when there are no small people around. I have less time, not more, and it's taking some re-adjustment on my part. And, once again, I am full of admiration and respect for parents who juggle jobs with childcare and running a house.
I hope you all had a nice weekend. Ours was a good balance of pottering quietly at home on Saturday and seeing friends, fresh air, visiting a castle and a huge roast dinner on Sunday.
Anyway, to Monday's business. Last week I was extremely fortunate to win a giveaway by Charmaine at little nest box, and I chose the felt rainbow garland. I should confess that I am already a fan (and a customer) of Charmaine's shop; she creates simple, modern and very beautiful decorations for children's bedrooms. I was very, very happy to win her giveaway! As soon as the package arrived, Bella claimed it for her own and, credit to her, I knew the garland would work in her bedroom.
Have I ever shown you Bella's room? I'm not sure if I have. Here are some glimpses of tidy corners. She has a simple wooden bed made by my father in law. It is unbelievably heavy. I made the cushions from curtain off cuts with some easy applique. The canopy hanging over her bed is from Ikea. Bella doesn't go in for overly-princessy decoration (thank goodness) but we both like the mosquito net look of it.
The Eames coat rack used to hang in our hall but it never looked right there, so we moved it to Bella's room. The snooker ball colours work so well against the white wall and it is a handy place for tutus, ear muffs, skipping ropes and other essentials for life as a five year old girl. The shelf holds some framed bits and bobs and my mum (ever the primary school teacher) created Bella a "reading corner" with a chair, hamper full of books, and a rug.
Anyway, back to the garland. We tried it here, strung over some framed Eric Carle prints:
Then here, on the wardrobe door handles:
The rainbow circles echo the pattern in the canopy, and we can easily move it around. A string of rainbow circles - so simple, yet so utterly beautiful. Thank you Charmaine.

Love it! I can see why Bella claimed it for herself!
ReplyDeleteShe's too quick for me! I want another for my bedroom. x
DeleteYou have a very lucky 5 year old, what a great bedroom, love the garland too! Ada :)
ReplyDeleteI only showed you the tidy bits, but thank you! x
DeleteFab garland. Please please tell me there are corners you didn't photograph full of lurid toys and boxes of tat that she just won't throw away...or is that just my kids!
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of corner like that. We have a wardrobe bursting with happy meal toys and plastic jewellery that comes in party bags. x
DeleteLooks great Gillian, but I'd have been tempted to keep the garland for myself! Ha! x
ReplyDeleteI was Jen, she's too quick. And too bossy. x
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteVery sweet bedroom and I like the 'happy' garland, it goes perfectly! Bit jealous of the Fortnum and Mason hamper though!!
Ivan ;-)
I'm trying to remember where that hamper came from. It was either my parents or grandparents, and it's probably very old. Sadly we cannot afford f&m hampers. We think Waitrose is a bit posh in this house!
DeleteDear Gillian
ReplyDeleteWhat a simple but effective decoration. Your daughter's bedroom looks so lovely too. I am very jealous of the Eames coat rack!
Best wishes
Ellie
I feel I should say that the coat rack was bought many years ago, back in those heady days of two incomes and no children. I certainly would not advocate buying designer gear for a five year old's bedroom! Having said that, it was designed for kids and it's brilliant.
DeleteLove the garland and Bella's room too.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It does have untidy/tacky corners too!
DeleteWhat a great room Bella has - such taste in one so young! X
ReplyDeleteI managed to leave out the one bubblegum pink wall. I'm just waiting for her to ask for a barbie duvet set or something equally awful for her birthday... x
DeleteWhat a lovely giveaway prize. Lucky you - and lucky Bella! The felt garland is a great idea and looks really pretty in Bella's room :0) xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Jackie. I do love giveaways!
DeleteTwo hours is lovely, but I have to agree - it is definitely not enough. We're still on mornings only for the new year r's and I think it's driving my little one mad as much as it is me now. We both want to get stuck in, but two hours is just over too soon.
ReplyDeleteI love the garland and it looks just perfect where you have placed it.
Nina x
Two hours is great, but the amount of time I spend going to school/nursery and home, then back again...it feels suffocating. I'm always clock watching.
DeleteLovely - I love Charmaine's work, I featured that garland in my first Etsy treasury - it looks gorgeous in Bella's room.
ReplyDeleteI agree that 2 hours isn't much, but at the moment since Rufus stopped napping I don't get any time 'off' at all - I don't want to wish away my last year with him, but I am looking forward to a time when I can do the housework and maybe a bit of creative stuff without feeling guilty that I'm neglecting him!
And like you, I am totally in awe of Mums who work as well as doing all the stuff that we do - I feel so lucky to have been able to be at home with the boys, even if it does drive me a bit crackers sometimes! Rachel xx
It's true, it's hard when they drop their naps, as you have no down time at all. And cleaning with little ones around takes twice as long and everything gets half as clean. But obviously I will miss him like mad when he starts school.
DeleteYou lucky thing - winning such a fab giveaway! (Or should I say Bella is so lucky her mums a winner!) It looks great in her lovely room x
ReplyDeleteThanks Jen. No doubt she will move it around or use it in some dressing up game as a belt or something!
DeleteYou are such a lovely mom to share that garland! I would probably keep it all to myself :-) Looks great on the bed! x
ReplyDeleteI'm not at all lovely, I am quite shouty! But thank you. I may have to order another garland just for me. x
DeleteLovely- a beautiful room, Jo xx
ReplyDeleteThanks! But again, it's only the tidy edited version - it's a tip now.
Deletewhat a lucky little girl!

Coat rack aside, it's all Ikea or hand me downs. We know how to work on a budget in this house! x
DeleteWowzers, what a beautiful room for Bella.
ReplyDeleteI should add the room of my childhood was full of Bananarama, Kylie and Big Fun posters. My poor mother.
DeleteHi there, thanks for stopping by. I loved Kylie. And Jason. And Garfield the Cat too, for some reason.
DeleteI can't believe it's October already, September went past so quickly!
ReplyDeleteBella has such a lovely room - so bright, colourful and fun! I love those prints too.
I'm glad the garland has found a happy home and congratulations again on winning the giveaway! x
The garland is extremely happy, although it may also be being used for some role play/dressing up game that involves my old shoes and a handbag. Sorry about that! But we do love it. :-) x
DeleteBella's room is so pretty and I love her new garland, looks just right there :) x
ReplyDeleteThanks Cheryl.
DeleteThe garland looks really pretty - a lovely giveaway prize!
ReplyDeletePomona x
Lucky Bella ... the garland looks great in her lovely bedroom ... you have inspired me to harass my handy-andy brother to assist in decorating my little girl's room ... I know what you mean about time ... I am lucky at the minute ... first day ... my boys were both at school from nine until two and little fairy napped for an hour and a half ... I am amazed at what I actually got done ... long may the napping last :) ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteI know, September went so quickly, but I am happy that October has arrived. The garland is beautiful and just perfect in Bella's room (which is so lovely)! It sounds like you had a nice weekend. Wow, visiting a castle sounds like so much fun! I always love stopping by your blog...such a happy place!!
ReplyDeleteI love her room. So sweet and fun, you can feel her little personality. The garland is a perfect addition.
ReplyDeleteThe garland looks gorgeous on the bed head. She has the sweetest room.
ReplyDeleteit must be so much fun decorating it all. Its such a cute room.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super giveaway win! Love your little girl's bedroom.
ReplyDeleteJune
What a fab giveaway prize, so colourful, just what a little girl needs in her room. Eleanor used to have a canopy when she was little.
ReplyDeleteLooks so cute, love it!
ReplyDeleteI love Bella's room, and the garland is the finishing touch! I love that you have chosen lots of bright colours, a very happy little girl's space. Roberta
ReplyDeleteBella's room is lovely. And I love how you so casually said what you did on the weekend ... "visited a castle" ...!!! Well, of course you did!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous room for Bella! I love the way you've used a natural palette with the bright colour-pop accents; it looks snug and fun at the same time.... And so lovely not to be wall to wall princess pink :-). The garland works beautifully in the room. Love it all!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your lovely comments - you make my day! xx
