Bella's Bedroom (Thank You Charmaine!)

All of a sudden it's October. Where did September go? I am still adjusting to the pace of life here with Angus at nursery. I thought this new phase would bring me hours more time to myself, time to read and craft and blog and make...how foolish of me! I have two hours to myself on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, during which time I go to the supermarket, run errands, do housework, cooking, ironing, basically all the jobs which ensure the smooth running of a happy house.* On Tuesdays and Thursdays, after helping at Bella's school, I have an hour before I have to set off to collect Angus at 11.15am. I wonder if it's worth even going home? But I do, because it's amazing what you can achieve in one hour when there are no small people around. I have less time, not more, and it's taking some re-adjustment on my part. And, once again, I am full of admiration and respect for parents who juggle jobs with childcare and running a house.

I hope you all had a nice weekend. Ours was a good balance of pottering quietly at home on Saturday and seeing friends, fresh air, visiting a castle and a huge roast dinner on Sunday.

Anyway, to Monday's business. Last week I was extremely fortunate to win a giveaway by Charmaine at little nest box, and I chose the felt rainbow garland. I should confess that I am already a fan (and a customer) of Charmaine's shop; she creates simple, modern and very beautiful decorations for children's bedrooms. I was very, very happy to win her giveaway! As soon as the package arrived, Bella claimed it for her own and, credit to her, I knew the garland would work in her bedroom.

Have I ever shown you Bella's room? I'm not sure if I have. Here are some glimpses of tidy corners. She has a simple wooden bed made by my father in law. It is unbelievably heavy. I made the cushions from curtain off cuts with some easy applique. The canopy hanging over her bed is from Ikea. Bella doesn't go in for overly-princessy decoration (thank goodness) but we both like the mosquito net look of it.

The Eames coat rack used to hang in our hall but it never looked right there, so we moved it to Bella's room. The snooker ball colours work so well against the white wall and it is a handy place for tutus, ear muffs, skipping ropes and other essentials for life as a five year old girl. The shelf holds some framed bits and bobs and my mum (ever the primary school teacher) created Bella a "reading corner" with a chair, hamper full of books, and a rug.
Anyway, back to the garland.

We tried it here, strung over some framed Eric Carle prints:

Then here, on the wardrobe door handles:

but Bella finally settled on here, looped across the head board of her bed:

The rainbow circles echo the pattern in the canopy, and we can easily move it around. A string of rainbow circles - so simple, yet so utterly beautiful. Thank you Charmaine.

  3. Fab garland. Please please tell me there are corners you didn't photograph full of lurid toys and boxes of tat that she just won't throw away...or is that just my kids!

  5. Hello,
Very sweet bedroom and I like the 'happy' garland, it goes perfectly! Bit jealous of the Fortnum and Mason hamper though!!

    1. I'm trying to remember where that hamper came from. It was either my parents or grandparents, and it's probably very old. Sadly we cannot afford f&m hampers. We think Waitrose is a bit posh in this house!

  6. Dear Gillian
What a simple but effective decoration. Your daughter's bedroom looks so lovely too. I am very jealous of the Eames coat rack!
    Best wishes

    1. I feel I should say that the coat rack was bought many years ago, back in those heady days of two incomes and no children. I certainly would not advocate buying designer gear for a five year old's bedroom! Having said that, it was designed for kids and it's brilliant.

  10. Two hours is lovely, but I have to agree - it is definitely not enough. We're still on mornings only for the new year r's and I think it's driving my little one mad as much as it is me now. We both want to get stuck in, but two hours is just over too soon.

I love the garland and it looks just perfect where you have placed it.

    1. Two hours is great, but the amount of time I spend going to school/nursery and home, then back again...it feels suffocating. I'm always clock watching.

  11. Lovely - I love Charmaine's work, I featured that garland in my first Etsy treasury - it looks gorgeous in Bella's room.

I agree that 2 hours isn't much, but at the moment since Rufus stopped napping I don't get any time 'off' at all - I don't want to wish away my last year with him, but I am looking forward to a time when I can do the housework and maybe a bit of creative stuff without feeling guilty that I'm neglecting him!

And like you, I am totally in awe of Mums who work as well as doing all the stuff that we do - I feel so lucky to have been able to be at home with the boys, even if it does drive me a bit crackers sometimes! Rachel xx

    1. It's true, it's hard when they drop their naps, as you have no down time at all. And cleaning with little ones around takes twice as long and everything gets half as clean. But obviously I will miss him like mad when he starts school.

  20. Lucky Bella ... the garland looks great in her lovely bedroom ... you have inspired me to harass my handy-andy brother to assist in decorating my little girl's room ... I know what you mean about time ... I am lucky at the minute ... first day ... my boys were both at school from nine until two and little fairy napped for an hour and a half ... I am amazed at what I actually got done ... long may the napping last :) ... Bee xx
