I'm delighted to announce that the random number generator has spoken and Jo from Bristol has won the Cable and Cotton lights giveaway.
"Hi Gillian! My name is Jo, a teacher who tries to crochet to relax in my spare time, and I live in Bristol. I love these cable and cotton lights and have hankered after a string set as they just have a real cosy glow. I am not fond of bold ceiling lighting preferring the glow of fairy lights or table lamps in my house. I think my choice would be the marshmallow set- they'd add a perfect warming and soothing glow in my lounge! I am a regular reader of your blog- thanks for sharing!"
Jo - please could you email me at talesfromahappyhouse@yahoo.co.uk confirming your choice and giving me your address - thank you!
Rolling on with the usual weekly round-up of everyday goodness:
1. I've begun a new crocheted project, a shawl, and it has brought me huge amounts of pleasure this week. It's all new to me as I've never made a shawl, I've never worked from an American pattern before (get me, translating!) and this is my first time working with variegated yarn. It's not my usual taste (it's a gift) but I am enjoying every single stitch.
The yarn is Noro Silk Garden, which I won in a blog giveaway some time ago and, while it is not the softest, easiest yarn to work with in the world, the depth and variation of colour are just stunning. I love watching the colours change as I work, with no ends to darn in! Me and variegated yarn are becoming friends after all.
2. Pretty pumpkins. I might attempt something crafty with them later, but for now I just love the look of them on the table.
3. A nice cup of tea and a sit down is truly one of life's simple pleasures and my children aren't so old that I don't appreciate what it is to drink a cup of tea while it is still hot. Add cake* and a new magazine and I'm practically floating.
4. Today. It was brilliant. We drove up to Malham Cove and walked to the top. The views! Then we had a huuuge pub lunch (a Sunday roast, it had to be done) before stopping off for a stroll around Skipton on the way back to Leeds. I forgot my big camera (I kicked myself for that) so here are some phone snaps.
This is the cliff face of the cove. To give you an idea of scale, you can just make out some climbers on the rock. |

Thank you for your lovely comments on my summer embroidery, you are too kind. It's half term here and we are all very glad of the break. Tired parents, tired children, tired teachers - this autumn term always feels like a hard slog. Have a great week everyone.
* Apple and Currant Crumble Bars from this book - totally delicious and generously spiced with cloves, cinnamon and ginger. I can't find this particular recipe online but there are many similar ones.
What a wonderful shawl; I love the variegated yarn - very autumnal. I also love the fabulous views on your walk and Angus' cheeky little smile! Enjoy Half Term. x
ReplyDeleteWow, what a stunning spot, it sounds like you had the very best of days. Really lovely photos of your children and your husband too, despite not having your big camera. The shawl is wonderful, so warm looking with fabulous texture. I've got some squashes here too that I think I'll bring in for Hallowe'en, including two big Turk's Turbans - I'm wondering if they're carvable. Have a wonderful half term Gillian. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely happies and well done to Jo.
ReplyDeleteThe cliffs are huuuuge and I only realised it after looking for the climbers. The shawl is gorgeous and the colour variegation is beautiful. It's a very happy shot of the 'boys' but Bella's looks like a glossy magazine shot.
Wonderful pics, so lovely to see your family xx I've only ever driven past Malham Cove, we really must stop one day.
ReplyDeleteThat lovely shawl looks incredibly cosy, those colours are perfect for this season aren't they. Have a cosy evening x
oh I love the views from Malham, just gorgeous xxx
ReplyDeleteWhat stunning scenery...what is not to like about a big Sunday lunch in a cosy pub....Glad you enjoyed it xx
ReplyDeleteLovely happies this week, Gillian! I love your plate filled with pretty pumpkins. One of my favorite things to do in the afternoon is sit with a cup of tea and something sweet to eat. And it's extra special when I have a new book or magazine to read!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures all round. I would never have known they were using your phone. That shawl is a delight, very much like my one here :

I started a shawl last week for a gift for January but have not put another stitch on it but you know me, been busy tatting with other stuff. Jo x
You are going to make me cry. Mallham Cove is somewhere I just love and the photos are gorgeous, so thanks Gillian. Also love that shawl, and what a lovely gift for someone. I think you do brilliantly with all your crafts. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI swear I must be the only one who has not made that shawl although I have the pattern all printed out I have yet to make it. After seeing this one I just might be tempted, it is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove your photos, it sounds like you all had a great day.
Meredith
Oh, the shawl is gorgeous!!! The colors are so warm and inviting!
ReplyDeleteThe cliffs are amazing...wow...so big! Your photos are beautiful as usual.
Hello! I have found your blog via Yorkshireblogger's list of blogs, and this will certainly not be my last visit. So far I've not made it to Malham Cove myself, but it is definitely one of those must-see places I always keep in mind for my annual Yorkshire Holiday.
ReplyDeleteMalham Cove is one of my favourite places. It's so dramatic! The shawl is beautiful. Love the colours.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy half term.
Jacqui xx
Goodness I love that shawl, the colours are perfect for this time of year.
ReplyDeleteMy efforts to drag the family out for a walk failed miserably, Malham is stunning
OH that shwal ... I love the colors .... and the cliff.... many years ago, maybe 20 now!!!, I was able to climb such of cliffs... thanks for sharings your walk ! Have a creative week !
ReplyDeleteI never 'got' variegated yarn for ages but when I started to use it we became firm friends. Your shawl looks lovely and will probably go with lots of outfits. Where you live looks gorgeous and I have serious 'walk' envy. My 10 year old son resists any Sunday outdoor activity at all and as my husband works weekends and I'm on my own sometimes I don't have the energy to fight the good fight and force my son out so yesterday all I could manage was a short walk to the supermarket and back with the buggy and my 2 year old (as separate entities, she refused to get in) Anyway, I enjoyed your walk with you and your family and the photos are great, thanks for sharing, Sam xx
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful place. I was struck by the beauty of Yorkshire once again when I visited the other week. Those majestic hills. Glorious. And your photographs capture it all beautifully.
ReplyDeleteHave a great half term, Gillian.
Leanne xx
Lovely to see what you are making from the Noro, it looks really complicated! Xx
ReplyDeleteLove this week's happies. Angus' smile just says it all! Enjoy the half term break.
ReplyDeleteThe 'happies' are the best posts aren't they - I've literally just posted my weekend happies. Your shawl is very pretty and I so get the small pleasure of a HOT cup of tea and a lovely magazine. I discovered Landscape magazine recently and its utterly gorgeous. I visited Malham Cove when I stayed in Skipton for last years Yarndale - its an awe inspiring place isn't it ?
ReplyDeleteLovely post as always,
Kate xx
Gillian, it might have been snapped from a phone, but that limestone pavement photo is amazing! Otherwordly, I would even say. Lovely shawl; I am a fan of variegated yarns. :) I am jealous of your snack date with The Simple Things magazine - they stopped carrying it at my local bookstore.
ReplyDeleteWe stayed in Malham when we came to Yarndale While we were in yarn heaven our menfolk spent the day at Bolton Abbey. Next year when we return for more yarn purchases I've suggested our men try their hand at climbing Malham Cove, ha ha!!
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are great, living down on south coast I don't get up north very often, but the pictures people post it looks lovely. The Shawl you have made is in warming colours I love it!. xx
ReplyDeleteThe shawl looks good, Gillian. I'm looking for a shawl pattern to make up for a Christmas gift, that looks just the thing. Love the rest of your happies too, a hot cup of tea keeps me happy as well. x
ReplyDeleteThe shawl looks beautiful Gillian. I'm sure the recipient will be very pleased! What a great trip to Malham. Although not wanting to wish life away I'm looking forward to the day when we can be buggy free! Hope you have a lovely half term break. xx
ReplyDeleteLove your shawl - variegated yarn is great! Your pictures at Malham Cove brought back happy memories of holidays in Yorkshire.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely looking shawl :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great walk at Malham too, we've walked there a few times, it's lovely. Have you walked the path that goes by Janet's Foss?
Thank you for sharing. You are so lucky to live where you do. Yorkshire is a beautiful part of the UK. Your walk makes me want to move there.
ReplyDeleteCarol H.
Wow, Malham Cove looks stunning and i love the colours in your yarn - anything that saves you changing colour and sewing in ends gets my vote! Have a lovely relaxing half term with your little ones Gillian.

Want 1,2 and 3 thanks :). You can keep for because quite happy where we are on the island. Love that shawl!
ReplyDeleteloving your shawl Gillian.... I am not the greatest of fans of variegated yarn but last year I crocheted a pair of mittens with a colourful ball after I spoted the tutorial in Crejjtion's blog and absolutely loved it! Noro yarns are stunning.... We are having a very lazy day of half term here today as it is so gloomy in London.... By the way, I really loved your embroidery hoops in your previous post. I particularly loved how you stitched the lilacs.... Have a great week!! Pati x
ReplyDeleteI love Malham and the Yorkshire Dales. We recently moved from the foot of the Dales and I really miss the hills. I wouldn't change where I live now though and Malham is only a drive away :) Standing on top of the limestone pavement is awe-inspiring, isn't it?
