Summer Stitches

First, thank you so much for all your comments on my slow cooker post. Your hints and tips are very useful and much appreciated, all of them. Also, thanks for the fantastic response to the giveaway - it's now closed and I'll announce a winner on Saturday. But, in the mean time... I can finally show you my Summer Stitches embroidery. I feel both relieved and sad to have completed the last quarter of this seasonal series of mine. (You can see my SpringAutumn and Winter hoops if you like by clicking on the links.) I really struggled to get motivated with this one but then, as is so often the way, once I got going I became engrossed and didn't want it to end.

The tree, the anchor in each picture, is in full leaf. I was in French knot heaven here!

I had enormous fun sewing these hollyhocks...

...and this lilac. Or it could be buddleia, I'm not really sure to be honest.

My favourite part is these sunflowers. They were a joy to sew.

One of the things I most like about embroidery is it's tactile nature, and you can see how much texture the different elements have.

Here they are, lined up in a row. This is not the best way to display them, but I just wanted to show you.

For now I've hung them vertically on a pillar between our dining room and play room. It's not the best place, and I do think they'd look better hung in a square, but it'll do for now. The nice thing about hanging them here is how often I see them, since it's a part of the house we're all in all the time.

I love them! Of course I do, how could I not? I really enjoyed putting as much colour into my summer hoop as I could, but I think my favourite might be Winter, the least colourful of them all. Or maybe Spring, I don't know.

Do you have a favourite one?

  1. The new embroidery is a beautiful as the other three Gillian. You should start teaching classes! I would love to learn stitching pictures. In fact, I have bought floss and a vintage sewing box to store it.... in July. Cx

  3. It's beautiful and the very essence of summer. I have been staring and staring at the photos of all four and it's just so difficult to choose a favourite as I have favourite elements in all of them. If absolutely forced, maybe Spring because of the cherry blossom and the pussy willow. x

  5. They have turned out to be completely amazing as I knew they would. You must be really proud of those. Your kids will remember them when they are older and everything. I have not started my cabin one but I think I will when the really heavy weather sets in. Jo x

  7. Wow, Gillian, they're absolutely fantastic. You are SO creative. My favourite is winter as well, but I love the little toadstools of autumn a lot. I imagine your guests will stand and look at them for a long time, it's fun to compare the different features of each season. The texture of the french knots is really good, perfect for the leaves and blossom. I'm intrigued to see what you will come up with next, I think you have a lot more embroideries in you! CJ xx

  8. Hi Gillian,
Your embroidery looks amazing, especially hung vertically as they are. Each season depicted with intricate stitching.....for me possibly Spring or Winter umm but what is Spring and Winter without Summer and Autumn!. A lovely set.

  10. I love them all Gillian and they look so great together. I think that if I had to pick one it would be either Autumn or Winter - see, I still cannot narrow it down! A wonderful project that has been a lot of work for you I know, but it is lovely that they are all completed now and they really do make a lovely quartet! xx

  12. I thought I loved the summer one best as I saw so much in it that I liked - the zingy butterfly, the sunflowers, the lilac/buddleia, the ladybird but when I saw them altogether I realised I cant choose! They are all fab as they represent a different perspective.

  13. Dear Gillian
A fabulous project - they look wonderful! I think Winter is my favourite (which is odd, as I am usually a suck for colour) but it's those lovely seed heads which swung it! Many congratulations.
    Best wishes

  17. I love them all and think maybe a pattern could be a little earner for you. My August issue of Style at Home was waiting for me when we got back from UK and loved your article very much. Just think I got my hair washed and cut in your town, I think. Should have caught up for a cuppa, but much too far away now. Enjoy those stitcheries and can't wait to see what you start doing this winter. Take care.

  19. You have created a family treasure, Gillian! No matter which way you display them, even lined up, I admire them. Although summer is not my favorite season, the holly hocks win my vote as favorite because they remind me of the pink holly hocks my dear aunt grew next to the side door of her stone house. When I visited the stone house recently and posted the picture of it I noted that the holly hocks no longer grow there. But in my mind they still grow there, welcoming me back to my aunt's and uncle's home no matter where I moved or traveled away from them. Your designs and your execution of them are delightful, Gillian. Thanks for sharing them! xx

  20. They're beautiful and I think they look lovely hung vertically. I adore them all, but I think that the Summer one has the edge for me - sunflowers are one of my favourite flowers (apart from the smell!) and they look so colourful and jolly. I don't envy you having to do all those French knots though! Have a good Half Term if it's next week like ours. x

  39. I tried to pick a favourite and thought winter and spring, but then I kept seeing parts in all of them that I just love like the speed you manage to make the birds' flight have. They are all genuinely gorgeous. I've borrowed a slow cooker to try so I will let you know how I get on. Xx

  50. They are all lovely and look great the way you have them displayed. If I had to choose a favourite it would have to be autumn as that's my favourite time of year.

  51. I have loved watching this progress through the year Gillian. You are so creative and talented. They are all so beautiful I can't choose a favourite...but I love the french knots on the tree(s)!!

  52. All your embroideries are so lovely. It's hard to choose whichj season I prefer - probably winter, maybe spring. But they're all gorgeous.

  53. Embroidery pictures! I love them all so much that it's difficult to choose a favourite... but if I had to pick one it would have to be Spring and Summer, because I have a terrible weakness for clusters of french knots. And that is still choosing more than one, but it's as close as I'm ever going to get.

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
