We spent Saturday morning at a very beautiful lavender farm not far from Abigail's house, where we are currently staying.
It was a hot, sultry morning - in fact, we had thunder storms that afternoon and evening - and the scent of the flowers was heady and intense.
It's a very photogenic place.
It's not large, you couldn't really spend more than a couple of hours there but it's time enough to wander up and down the fields and take lots of photos then retreat to the shady cafe and shop area.
They sell freshly cut lavender by the bunch (as well as every type of lavender-related gift you could imagine) and I bought one to dry out when I get back to Leeds. There is also a menu of lavender flavoured drinks, bread, shortbread and tea among other things. The ice cream is exceptional. Just lavender-y enough.
I became obsessed with trying to photograph a butterfly.
Difficult. They move to fast for me! These shots were the best I could manage.
After we'd sampled the wares and made the children pose for about one hundred photos (trying to get a baby, a three year old, a four year old and a six year old to all smile and look at the camera at the same time is a challenge) we went home.
Lovely place, lovely people.
We go back to Leeds tomorrow. It's been a such good week here with our friends; slow and relaxing with lots of time to do nothing much but chat and play with the babies, and we managed to squeeze in a day trip to London too. Then it's back to emails, washing, errands, appointments and a big blog reading catch up.
And if all that purple was a bit much, here's some colour from our week.

ReplyDeleteHope the bit of rain we've had done south during the last few days hasn't spoiled things too much. The lavender farm looks like a heavenly place - I bet you could smell the stuff for hours afterwards as well. I love the photo of the children - it looks like something out of a picture book. Have a safe journey home! x
ReplyDeleteWow, I've just been reading about lavender farms....I wonder if my back garden could sustain one.....,:) x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo of the children in the lavender field! And that little hand.. I can smell the lavender from here ;-).
ReplyDeleteSo lovely and relaxing, Gillian. When I saw your post title I immediately wondered if it was the lavender farm in Kent ne not far from my parents' home. I always find violets and purples really tricky to catch on camera but it seems to me you have mastered that beautifully. I LOVE cabbage butterflies against lavender flowers; one of my simple summer pleasures!
ReplyDeleteHappy return home.
Stephanie
Wow, that is a lot of lavender. I bet the fragrance was amazing. Your photos are lovely to look at, sounds though you had a great visit.
ReplyDeleteMy lavender has been wonderful, but it is starting to "go over" now, but I can come and relive it by looking at your photos - yeah!
Amy
I love to visit lavender farms. That's one of my planned excursions for our Fridays-without-kids. Lavender ice cream sounds very interesting, I'd love to try it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, I bet the scent was heavenly. I tried to photograph some winged things yesterday too, but they do move fast! Your pictures are all lovely, so much lavender, beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos. Those are just the scenes I'd hoped to see when we visited Yorkshire Lavender so I can now imagine just what it would have looked like - a pity your blog doesn't have scent-a-vision :) x
ReplyDeleteI can almost smell the lavender in your photos. It looks so lovely. x
ReplyDeleteOh Gillian this is on my wish list of things to do this Summer. After snipping a little bunch this morning the house smells divine so I can only imagine what a whole field would waft like.

Gillian,
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you are having a good time with your friends. After many attempts to try and photograph butterflies, I have read somewhere that you should tae your pictures on an overcast day, because they are more laid back and don't flit about so much. You'd think it was the other way around!
Leanne xx
Love the purple, could look at it all day. Just wish I could smell it! Jo x

ReplyDeleteJust spent some time meandering through your latest posts while sipping an iced tea. Looks like you've been just as busy and creative as always. Such fun ideas, friendly writing, and darling children. Glad to see your smiling face and the backside of John ;) (I don't think I'd seen a photo of him before - for some reason I imagined him dark-haired!).
