You know when you see pictures of chic, beautifully styled picnics involving wicker baskets, pretty blankets, baguettes and wine? Well, that never happens to me. I - sadly - don't often have need for something called a picnic napkin. My al fresco dining usually involves small children, sweaty babybell cheeses, warm cartons of Ribena, slightly squashed ham sandwiches and a pack of baby wipes. So when I saw the pattern in Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing for these napkins I thought: that's lovely, I want to make that, but it's not for me. But then I thought about possible thank you gifts for teachers and the guilt-inducing fabric stash I seem to have acquired, and it occurred to me how nice it would be to make these for Angus's lovely nursery teacher who is a gem of a woman and has without doubt gone out of her way to make Angus's time at nursery a happy one.
It is simply two rectangles of fabric sewn together with a little pocket on one side to hold some cutlery and a ribbon to tie it together when it's rolled up.
I could see a real difference in my sewing on this project after attending the sewing classes. I wasn't rushed or tense. I sat down and calmly took my time and did everything I was taught; I washed and ironed the fabric, I measured and cut carefully, I pressed my seams, my lines are straight and both napkins are - by some miracle - the same size! Incredible, I know.
I ordered the disposable wooden cutlery from here and I think it adds a nice finishing touch to the whole thing. Details like that always make me happy.
I made two as she is getting married this summer and I thought that while I might not be having many romantic sunset picnics with champagne corks popping, she might.
The cream and blue striped fabrics are from Hobbycraft and the floral fabric doing a pretty good Cath Kidston imitation was from Ikea a few years ago.The top section folds down to hold the cutlery in place...
...and it all rolls up in a very satisfying way.
I made a little label just in case she unrolled it and wondered what it was.
We gave Bella's class teacher - an equally warm and hard working woman - a breakfast box containing Marks & Spencer croissants and two jars of homemade jam. I know not everyone likes to go in for the teacher gift thing, but it's something I really enjoy doing.
We are all settling into the rhythm of the school holidays here. Bella and Angus bickered and fought all weekend, like they were marking their territory, but today they are starting to settle down and have remembered how to play together again. The playhouse is a big hit - I will post about it this week. The main appeal seems to be opening and shutting the curtains. While the south of the UK swelters we've had cooler temperatures here. Half of me welcomes the respite but the other half really wishes the sun would come back. It is the summer holidays, after all.
And the royal baby has arrived! I had a dream a few nights ago that the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a girl called Doris. Yes, Doris. A great old-school Hollywood name, but an unlikely choice for a future monarch. Anyway, it's a boy so it's a good thing I didn't place a bet.
What lovely thoughtful gifts - I'm sure the teachers will be delighted x
ReplyDeleteGillian the napkins are totally lovely! What a perfect gift - really beautifully made, very unique, and no doubt they will be used and treasured. Your sewing is flawless - so glad you are still reaping the benefits of the class! And I love the jammy teacher gift, too - such a thoughtful treat for a special teacher. Chrissie x
ReplyDeletethose really are beautiful napkins, what a lovely idea. One of our favourite wedding gifts was from a group of friends who had bought us a breakfast in bed tray but then did a bag of jam, marmalade, tea, coffee and a mini bottle of champagne. Such a thoughtful, personal gift.
ReplyDeletePrincess Doris has quite a ring to it. Not for a boy though, obviously.
Lovely gifts ... I am sure the teachers loved them ... you made me giggle with your picnic description ... just like ours ... no need for beautiful napkins here either ... one day we will again though ... enjoy the holidays ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful gifts and so thoughtful too. I'm sure they'll be appreciated. I used to love choosing gifts for the teachers at the end of the year when Matt was little.
ReplyDeleteHope the holidays are fun and relaxed for you. x
I love the pockets on those picnic napkins Gillian, a gorgeous, beautifully made and thought out gifts for both your babies teachers. I used to always think of different gifts off the beaten track , I think chocs and wine are great but something a wee bit different must always go down a treat. Alice is having her last day of year 7 tomorrow and we are so looking forward to her having a relaxing chilling out Summer holiday, she certainly deserves it, its been a shock to the system being in High school :o)
ReplyDeleteAs for pretty napkins in our household, sorry they don't exist, kitchen paper towel is the kingpin to any picnic as far as I am concerned :o) xxx Happy play days for you all x Penny
Kitchen roll rules in our house and has done for so long I'd forgotten about pretty napkins!! Think I need to update our picnic things as my son is 15 now!!
DeleteBeautiful and extremely thoughtful gifts, if I were a teacher I would be thrilled to receive something so lovely!
ReplyDeleteLove Caroline xx
Such a beautiful thoughtful gift. I absolutely love the fabric! And the breakfast basket is such a sweet idea. I am sure she loved it. I know I would. I agree with Bee... someday when our children are older we will enjoy some of the finer things again. I am very excited about the royal baby. I had a feeling it was going to be a boy all along. I am enjoying a glass of Prosecco right now because the royal baby is a reason to celebrate! Hope you are enjoying your summer holiday!
ReplyDeleteCute as a button and perfect for a gift! I've added this to my "teacher gift" file and will use it next year! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job and I am sure the teachers will be delighted with their gifts.

I'm very impressed by the napkins, so beautifully made and I'm sure the recipient will be thrilled with them.
ReplyDeleteThose are absolutely adorable. Love it ,
ReplyDeleteBoth are lovely ideas and I'd be very happy to receive either of them. x
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with your sewing, the napkins are beautiful! I am lucky to have a group of close friends among the Mums of Max's class, we always club together and buy the kids teacher some vouchers...always useful, but nowhere near as thoughtful and personal as your gifts! xx
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful and thoughtful gifts. Anyone would be touched to receive these. I absolutely love those napkins! :)
ReplyDeleteThese are such gorgeous and thoughtful gifts - and so beautifully made. Lucky teachers!
ReplyDeleteTee Hee - I had a giggle at your Princess Doris of Cambridge dream, but it could be worse: I read yesterday that one of the girls names on the Bookies list was Pochahontas!!
Have a lovely week, hope the sun shines
Xx
beautiful gifts. I was a teacher and I would have loved these. My Duvet cover is made from the blue floral fabric and I love it. My picnincs sound very much like yours!!!I made a zippy brooch for our lovely teacher and am in full party prep sewing.Jo xx

A wonderful gift! You did a great job. Hugs :D
ReplyDeleteI want a picnic right now. Mine are so ad that our children always used to go and sit on our friends picnic blankets...... My husband would of too given half a chance x
ReplyDeleteThose are great gifts, and beautifully done re. the napkins. I'd love to think I've finally reached a stage in my life where I could use hand stitched picnic napkins, but our picnics often involve 'help' from the whippets if we're not super vigilant ... I can just imagine my lovely napkins being dragged off through the dust!
ReplyDeleteThe primary school here used to have a flowers and fruit (including jam) only rule for teachers gifts which I quite liked .
Gorgeous gifts. I love these napkins and might just have a go at making these myself as I am in the midst of napkin making. I think the gorgeous breakfast hamper is just wonderful, I am sure the teacher will be over joyed with this lovely gift. Yes Dorris certainly not quite the regal name we were expecting, but maybe it signals something quit ordinary and I like that. Xoxo
ReplyDeleteI'd be very happy to receive either of those gifts (not that I'm hinting). Good to hear the sewing classes paid dividends. I think I need to do something similar. (Cooler weather here, too, and I love it!)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fab teachers gift and so beautifully made. I too am a Tupperware and crushed crisps kinda picnicker. I come from a family of professional picnickers you wouldn't believe the stuff my Aunty's take for a picnic they put me to shame ~ Sarah x
ReplyDeleteYour post has made me smile. Beautiful napkins. My picnics are more like yours than champagne/sunset confections as well. I know what you mean about the marking of territory. I always feel that mine take a week to properly settle into holidays.
ReplyDeleteQueen Doris - hmm what a shame it had a good ring to it! Love the gifts but the Saturday morning basket is fab -well done x Jane
ReplyDeleteAgain... can your babies please come to my school! I love all the thoughtfulness! Super napkins Gillian and a breakfast box... you are so clever! Hazel x
ReplyDeleteHooray for the royal baby!
ReplyDeleteWell done Gillian on your picnic napkins, they look simply beautiful and so neat! I think handmade presents for teachers are so special. We always do vouchers at school, which is great but also very impersonal so I like to make something myself, but always worry it might not be appreciated.. Some people love handmade, some people don't and I'm never quite sure which category people fall into!
I just love your breakfast hamper with homemade jams, that is such a good idea!
Such gorgeous teacher gifts they really are. The picnic napkins are such a lovely, thoughtful idea - I am sure they will be very much used and appreciated. The breakfast box is also so lovely and a wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteFantastic news about the Royal Baby!!
Marianne x
Well done! I read somewhere that to make new knowldege useful one has to start using it straight away, then it's remembered best. It's great that you feel confident with the sewing now.
ReplyDeleteI love the picnic napkins! Such a handy thing to have too, there never seems to be a safe place to put your sandwhiches...i mean who actually takes plates?! I wish I had the patience to machine sew, perhaps classes would help me too :)
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely thoughtful gifts. I love the little wooden cutlery you've included, what a special touch, I'm sure they'll be treasured :) xx
ReplyDeleteSuch thoughtful presents (especially the additional napkin for 'Mr' Teacher). I'm sure they'll be really appreciated and enjoyed. Amazing sewing as well!
ReplyDeleteHorray for the royal baby! I was out of the house most of yesterday so couldn't glue myself to the tv but having a feeling I'll have it on all day today so that I can see them leave the hospital! x
They are fab and a wonderful gift. I am sure they will be appreciated
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely gift and so well made, I hope they were really appreciated!
ReplyDeleteOoh you clever thing. And sooo thoughtful. I had ideas for homemade gifts, and as usual it was shop bought flowers. Same on me after seeing this post. I love the idea of a breakfast box for a gift. Me and my sister in law take each other out for breakfast/brunch on our birthdays. It's a lovely tradition.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear about the play house. We are thinking about getting Olly one, so will be looking forward to how you tackled it.
Leanne xx
What beautiful gifts. I'm sure they were very much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThis year S had a male teacher who came in halfway through the year and I didn't really get to know him as well. I wasn't sure what to get and in the end we decided on a bar of chocolate and a bottle of Savanna cider because it had her name on it, spelt exactly the same way!
Lisa x
I so so love this hope to make some with.the help.of.my mum and her machine. Thankyou for sharing :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely present, Gillian! I'm sure, greatly appreciated!!
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful! I see so many lovely teacher gifts on blogs, but around here, we're lucky to get a box of chocolates of some undrinkable wine! I'm very impressed with you picnic napkins, I bet the teachers (and the Mr!) really appreciated a thoughtful touch. The breakfast basket is a wonderful idea too. If you fancy making a couple more picnic napkins, I'd like to buy some!
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy 2nd time visiting them :)
Are those little wooden spoons re-usable? Much better than plastic!
Id love to receive these as a teacher!
Tammy xx
These look so pretty! Love the built in cutlery holder - so neat.
ReplyDeleteThese are so lovely. What a wonderful gift. Love the material as well and the hand printed labels. I am sure that your gifts were the talk of the staff room. Very thoughtful and lots of effort.
ReplyDeletePS: The basket was a great idea too... Homemade jam is always lovely, but to mix it in a basket with croisants for Saturday Morning Breakfast is a great treat. Very Creative.
ReplyDeleteYour picnic napkins are just lovely and make a wonderful gift. I will be trying this. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely idea, well done sarah x
ReplyDeleteGillian absolutely love the napkins. The teacher must be thrilled. We are at the stage where picnics can babe posh but I would swap it any day for the noisy joyful ones with little kids. Gosh you sewing is looking great. I think the effect of having Alan expert teach you is crucial Sunny here today so hope ou've got some too. X
