Gently Does It

This weekend ...

:: I delighted in the sun streaming through the windows into the house this morning.

Waking to sunshine after days of drizzle and low light levels did me the world of good.

If I was a cat I'd be lying in a sunbeam, purring. But I'm not so I show my appreciation by taking photos of interesting shadows instead.

:: Bella and I spent the darkening afternoon making birthday party invitations.

We used ribbons, washi tape, card, glue...no crafting box went unransacked. She dictates, I do as I'm told. We make a good team. They're meant to be lollipops. Yes, I know, they look more like ping pong bats.

:: I finished joining my blanket. Just the border to do now...

:: I opened a box of personalised Christmas cards. I ordered them from here and used my own pictures. I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out on the whole. Sadly, I still have to write them, a task I loathe. By the third card my hand is cramped and my writing a scrawl. I have a huge fear I'll muddle up someone's card and someone else's envelope at some point. However, I persist every year with this tradition as I think it's an important one. It's a nice way to stay in touch with people and I love to receive Christmas cards. A card-free Christmas would be a bleak one, for me anyway.

:: I spent another slow, cosy afternoon with jam jars, tissue paper and a paint brush making tea light holders. Enormous fun. I'll post more about that soon.

:: I unpacked the advent calendar bunting.*

:: More importantly, I remembered to put some of these in the calendar for tomorrow morning. Tis the season of chocolate before breakfast.

And in amongst that there was a fun night out last night at the 80s fancy dress party. (I dined with Freddie Mercury, Maverick from Top Gun, George Micheal and three Madonnas. I want to go to another one so I've got an excuse to buy a suit with huge shoulder pads from a vintage shop.) We walked in the woods, ate fish and chips, tackled the supermarket, took small people to swimming lessons, paid library fines, watched fantastic old films and just generally went about our weekend in a gentle and relaxed way. It was just what we needed. I want to store up this feeling. It might see me through the coming weeks.

I promised I would held spread the word about this raffle to raise money for Myeloma UK. Money raised is going towards research into the condition as well as helping support those who have it, and their families and friends. It's an excellent cause and a local one, too.

* It's made by the incredibly talented Jooles of Sew Sweet Violet. I won it in a giveaway but you can buy it here

  7. Wow, it sounds like you had a wonderful, wonderful weekend. ... I was really hoping for a relaxing weekend, but ended up with a very busy one. Got lots done, but I'm really tired. Really, really want a relaxing weekend :)

  8. Like you, I find writing Christmas cards difficult, because usually the only times when I write by hand are when taking notes or putting something in my diary that only I need to be able to read. My handwriting went from bad to worse over the years! But still, I like writing those cards, because I sit down with a pile of cards, envelopes, a good pen and my address book, and think about each and every person or family I want to write to. I have a different little message for each of them, and choose the card according to what I hope will suit their taste best.
And like you, I love getting Christmas cards and would sorely miss them if the sideboard in my living room was to remain empty!
Your weekend sounds rather busy for "relaxed" and "gentle" :-)
Would LOVE to see pictures of the 80s outfit!

  11. Your personalised Christmas cards are lovely and Bella's party invitations are great. I've been writing Christmas cards in batches so it's less tiring and less of a chore. I found out today that making the girls wait til they finish their porridge before they can eat their Advent calender chocolates is a brilliant way to get them to eat their breakfast quickly and without a fuss!..Have a good week! x

  12. Advent really "lives" more in the UK than over here ! I just read Amy's post (Amy from Love made my home), and she also blogged about the chocolate before breakfast ! We know the advent calendars with chocolate in them, but it's more to give children a treat (and is not especially given at breakfast...).
Love your birthday invitations - for me, they dó look like a lollypop !! Nice work !
I also send self-made christmas cards every year (well, I design them and they get printed by a printing company). I love christmas cards. But at the moment, am trying to find every excuse there is to postpone writing them ;-))) (oh yes, writing cramps here as well...)

  17. Really pretty cards Gillian. I'm not a card person myself (I just think of all the trees - I know, bah humbug). The invitations are cute - glad it was a mother/daughter fun crafting event. So many Moms would have just bought them.

  21. Ah yes, chocolate before breakfast. The boys are in heaven with this new development. The next couple of weeks are a bit crazy for us, mainly for the children, they have a busier social than I do! Have a wonderful week and I hope Bella's party goes well for her.....and you xo

  25. As soon as I saw the invites on the table I thought lollipops. I bet Bella was pleased as punch with them, what an inventive idea.
Yes it's chocolate for breakfast here too, although I insist on cereals being eaten first, how mean of me!
Your cards are lovely, you've chosen some beautiful prints and just think about how nice the stamped envelopes will look with this years Christmas stamps on them.

I seem to send fewer and fewer every year but write more in the ones I do send. Those invitations look great too. BigR wrote her last week...for her 6th birthday party occurring in September next year! Hope Bella has a fab party.
