A really normal weekend.

:: After a day of rain on Friday the sky cleared and we went to our local fireworks display, swaddled in probably too many layers (I made the kids wear leggings under their trousers), sweating slightly and carrying a thermos of mulled wine in our backpack. Sparklers were waved. Angus refused to wear his glow-in-the-dark gloves to hold the sparkler, as predicted.

:: I had my first experience of that Yorkshire bonfire night tradition, Pie and Peas. It is a pork pie - served hot - and smothered in mushy peas with mint sauce drizzled on top. I realise that everything about that sentence sounds disgusting, but it was good. Mind you, when you are cold and hungry, and you're eating something warming outside while waiting for a (reluctant, damp) bonfire to be lit, anything is tasty. But still, I really enjoyed it. I'm proper Yorkshire now.

:: Maths is fun! That's what they're always telling us, anyway. Well, if maths homework involves whiling away a wet afternoon flicking through old issues of Ideal Home and Country Living, looking for examples 2D and 3D objects, then yes, I will concede that maths is actually a lot of fun indeed. And I learnt what a hemisphere is too.

:: We ate really good bacon rolls.

:: Angus is a pro at lounging, a skill he inherited from his equally talented father.

:: Sylvanian Families are currently the toy of choice in our house. I do love Sylvanian Family products. The retro touches, the lack of an obvious gender bias, the gently old-fashioned feel of it all...it's charming. I was probably as excited as Bella when she unwrapped her car and caravan last Christmas. This year Angus has asked for the motorbike and sidecar.

:: And talking of Christmas, I bought the patterns for Miss Dandelion Doe and Mr Basil Fox. The rabbit was a huge hit last year and so I let Bella and Angus chose a softie each for Christmas. I am already anxious about sewing that teeny, tiny shirt for the fox. I haven't used my sewing machine for about six months. Making the softies is easy, but the clothes....agh. Also,  while we're on the subject of the clothes for the toys, I'm not ashamed to say that I'd happily wear this entire outfit.

:: When I took this photo of the kitchen, I was thinking how happy I was. I was making chutney, John was making a key lime pie...it was all so domestic and lovely. Fast forward an hour. The finished, baked key lime pie is cooling on top of one of the hob rings (a stupid place to leave it, John!) because our tiny kitchen is a mess and we ran out of worktop space. I am trying to ladle my chutney into jars and cook the kids' tea at the same time. You can guess what happened, can't you? I switched on the wrong hob ring. Ten minutes later, I wonder what the burning smell is then jump, when the ceramic pie dish makes a loud bang as it cracks into lots of pieces.

Also, hot pie dishes make bin liners melt. Just so you know.

Some weekends are exciting, others drag. Sometimes you get to the coast or the woods, for a walk or a day out, you throw parties and see friends. Other weekends are lost to illness, work, DIY, homework, chores. Some are full of photos, other times the camera sits untouched from Friday night till Sunday.

But this weekend, it was just really, really normal. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible, just busy to-ing and fro-ing, a bit of fun, a bit of lazing. A bit of pottering.

I'll take normal.

  1. You made me laugh with the tale of the melted bin liner! Yorkshire Pie and Peas is a new one for me - I'd have to substitute a veggie pie though! I love the blanket on the 'lounging chair' - so cosy and homely looking. Sometimes a nice normal weekend is just what is needed - I'm all for a bit of lazing and pottering. Have a good week. x

  2. Hey Gillian,
Normal rocks in my book. This time of year is very normal. Until the first week of December, then it goes mental again. As for the outfit; I totally get your thinking. I spend rather too much of my time wondering why Boden don't make their girl clothes in ladies sizes. They're missing a trick!
I hope that you have a very normal week.

  4. I loved this post Gillian. We had a 'normal' weekend too. BigR has asked about Sylvanian families and wonders if Santa can bring them - I have to say I am beyond excited about this! I do love the patterns from Alicia Paulson but my skill level is not up to present giving standard (yet) plus I'd never be able to keep it a secret!! :) I hope you weren't too disappointed not to get your pie... here's to a lovely week. xx

  5. Normal is wonderful, the weekend ebbs and flows just as it is supposed to, melted bin liner and all.
    Hugs,

  6. Yeah, a normal weekend is fine by me. Our previous weekend disappeared into a blur of sickness so I was glad to have a normal, if rather wet, weekend just past. I have to admit the pie with mushy peas sounds very disguting but the bacon roll looks delicious. Were you able to eat the key lime pie?

  7. Glad I'm not the only one who has shattered stuff by heating the wrong part of the hob! I lost 4 of my Denby plates that way! Whoops :)
Also love that Angus co-ordinates with the crochet behind him. What a clever lad.

PS - I always love Maths homework - much to Matt's embarrassment.

  8. The melted bin liner - so funny :-)... Too bad about that key lime pie though !
And Angus stopped wearing his gloves inside, I see ;-). Or maybe gloves & lounging don't match ;-)))
I would like to try that pie & pea plate ! Big fan of everything that has peas in it, here ;-) !

  9. Hi Gillian, shame about the pie.....sounds like something that would happen here!! My kitchen is tiny too and I run a business from it!! I'm not entirely convinced about the pork pie mushy peas, but I know what it is like to eat anything when cold and hungry xx

  10. Oh dear, what a pity about the pie (something similar happened to me once). Love the photo of your kitchen though, Gillian. I love a bit of 'kitchen clutter' - it's so inviting.

  11. It sounds like a great weekend, especially the bacon roll and sewing bits!! I look forward to seeing more of the animals when they are done. I love the outfit that the one you linked to is showing as well, and I had thought before when I looked at them that I could wear that too!! xx

  12. Sounds like a great weekend! I love the photo of Angus lounging! What a shame about the pie incident. I had to chuckle at the bin liner comment too.

  13. Sounds like a PERFECT weekend. Poppy has added Sylvanian families to her Christmas list, they do look very sweet. Have a good week. Sarah xo

  15. I loved hearing about your weekend and what is normal for one family may not be so for another and I once had a big discussion with someone and we came to the conclusion that we are all so different "normal" is not always so. Thanks for telling about the mishap, so I now know when I do silly things like putting the veg in the steamer and no water in the saucepan, I'm not the only one. Love Angus's socks. Now, have a great week and take care.

  16. Normal is good, comforting and relaxing in my books. I love the picture of Angus lounging, he looks so chilled out. I hope you could still eat the key lime pie! Things like that happen to us often, unfortunately. Have a lovely normal week! Cx

  18. What a lovely post Gillian, normal weekends are pretty wonderful aren't they. The key lime pie incident sounds like the kind of thing that might happen here on occasion. I love the Sylvanian narrow boat. They passed us by somehow, but now I'm wishing they didn't. Good luck with your softie making. It's something I think about from time to time, but I know I'd be hopeless. I might just have a quick look at the patterns though... CJ xx

  19. Oh, I love normal. Your weekend sounded perfect...my kind of weekend. Love the Doe and Mr. Fox patterns...I made the rabbit for my little one's birthday last year...maybe another softie is in order for Christmas. Thanks for the idea.

  20. Hello Gillian,
I read your blog all the time but not sure if I have commented before. I truly love your blog for your honest and charming depiction of your life as it happens under your roof. I have a daughter the same age as your children and can relate to so many of your posts and in this one I loved the Sylvanian families boat. We have the car and caravan and I've vowed never to part with it as I love its retro vibe.

  21. I love Sylvanian families, sadly more than James and dan did. I wanted to buy the windmill for them but they wanted Lego! Had to be satisfied with the figures to live in the Lego constructions. Could you still eat any of the pie? Xx

  22. Oh dear, kitchen calamities, don't we just have them?
    A very nice weekend though!

  23. We've got a Morris Minor car which looks a lot like the one the Sylvanians have, we're thinking of entering our local carnival next year all dressed and driving the car! Hope the rest of your week goes well x

  24. What a wonderful normal week-end! Leaving a pie on the stove is like leaving stuff in the oven...a no-no! I am not one to "hide" dirty pots and pans or leave left-overs in the oven for later so when I turn it on, it is without checking its contents... Hubby has finally figured out that it is NOT a solution to leave stuff in there.... ;-)

  25. Yes, normal is good, I'm happy with that. I love the sylvanian families boat! We've got the car and caravan, it's adorable. What a shame about the pie...

  26. My girls absolutely adored Sylvanians, in fact I think that Alice's room was Sylvania, she had a whole village in there and Natalie still has some of hers, packed away in a cupboard because she doesn't want to part with them (she's 22!). Miss Doe and Mr Fox look sweet. Have a great week Gillian xx

  27. Normal is good :) shame about the pie, definitely something I would do! I used to love Sylvanian families back in the day x

  28. I'll be honest: the bacon roll looks a lot tastier than the pie and peas :-) By the way I have the same pie dish and pot :-) Sounds like a lovely weekend. We generally always have 'normal' weekends! x

  29. I like normal too, I'd take 'normal' anyday or weekend...Sorry to hear about the key lime pie disaster though. I'm sure your husband will use the cooling rack next time!..The softies are adorable. They'll be a joy to make-- hopefully! x

  30. I'd arm wrestle you for that bacon roll but you can keep the pie and peas!
Lovely weekend full of family life. Normal can be much under rated but it's what makes the world go round.
Such a shame about the key lime pie.
Love the photo of Angus, he looks very happy indeed.

  31. Sounds like a perfect weekend, gorgeous photos. I want the Sylvanian Families canal boat for myself. You made me laugh with the pie and peas, I too felt like I was proper Yorkshire when I first had them a couple of years ago. My husband was horrified at my Southern lack of pie and peas knowledge!

  32. Sounds like the recipe for a great weekend.

  33. I do love a bit of stodge - pie and peas are popular in these parts too (they were served up at the Halloween party the other week)...
Commiserations on the kitchen disaster. Sounds like the kind of thing I'd do too.
And I've been hankering after a duffel coat for a while now. That's one well-dressed rabbit. Good luck with the sewing!

  34. Hi, Never heard of peas and pie before but sounds nice!, love normal weekends, I understand the lack of space always look at our kitchen and wish is was double the size. Hope you have a good week!x

  35. Oh Gillian, I love the "normal" weekends. We had one of those here too and we needed it. Quite a lot of time was spent at home chilling... They are particularly great when you know that the running up to Christmas is coming and will be a non-stop business.... Hope you have another lovely weekend! Pati x

  37. Normal is perfect. I love these type of weekends. Sorry to hear of the pie disaster. I think they happen in every kitchen, now and again. I let a saucepan boil dry whilst steaming the Christmas pudding a few years ago. The plastic bowl melted and stuck to the saucepan. Epic fail! I use ceramic bowls now. And I am beyond excited. The Slyvanians are moving in here this Christmas. I could squeal with delight ;). Let's hope the little fairy loves them as much as I do! Hope you have a lovely weekend. Bee xx

  38. I followed your link back here to see what I missed about the key lime pie. Oh my :( I have blotted the details of similar disasters from my memory, Gillian, but I know I had such disasters because I can remember the sound of glass exploding and then trying to find every last shard of glass. As for the melting of the plastic bin liners, thanks for the reminder...I have blotted that detail from my memory as well :) xx

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
