A spring-time theme seems a bit like wishful thinking at the moment, since it's snowed on and off all day and a biting, icy wind blows, but hey ho. The first thing I should mention is that our family bathroom is small. Not small and perfectly formed, just very, very small, as you can see from the picture above. You can't quite stretch out your arms and touch all four walls but you almost can. But, you work with what you have.
Also, it's north facing so while it has a large window and lots of light, it's a very cold sort of light. And what I do just LOVE about this yellow paint is the warmth it gives the room. Honestly, I walk into this room and I smile and feel like spring is coming. As I leave the room I go to turn the light off then realise that, no, the light is not on, it's just so BRIGHT in this room! I guess you love it or hate it. I love it.
We only painted the room; the flooring, bath, sink, toilet and mirrored cupboard stayed put as they are only six years old and don't need changing. About a year ago I bought the print below from Lou, of little green shed blog's etsy shop. It is rather appropriately called "Spring Flowers".
I was drawn to the cheerful colours and shapes in the print, and that print and the striped washcloth in the photo below formed the basis for the colours in the bathroom, a sort of faded vintage palate of yellows, blues, pinks, whites and greens.
Yellow on the walls, white and blue/green in the tiles, and everything else here and there in towels, shower curtains, cups, that sort of thing. I finally hung two gorgeous little vintage mirrors a friend gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago, in a gloomy corner to bounce some light around.
I bought new shower curtains (from here) and love the way they bring the colours together.
I am completely in love with this gorgeous new butterfly-pattered towel (from here). They were too expensive to splash out on new bath towels so I made do with the ones we had and treated myself to a hand towel. The storage unit next to the sink is a Kartell Componibili unit bought from here about six years ago at about a two thirds of the price they are currently selling them at! I love it so much and would like to use it as a bedside table but the top is not big enough for a lamp, alarm clock, book, glass of water and all the other clutter that I "need" beside my bed.
A new tumbler for toothbrushes and some plants add...well, nothing really, but I enjoyed buying them and arranging them.
So there you have it. One sunshine-yellow bathroom. My Dad said "well, it's a good thing it's in the bathroom because you wouldn't want it in any other room, would you?". Mum said "Gosh, it's very jolly!" I like to think of it as "daffodil" yellow. And John? He does not particularly love it but he tolerates it, bless him, probably rather like the way he tolerates me and my decorating whims.
Wow Gillian it looks ace! I especially love the towel too. Very jolly, and just what we need to see to perk up our snowy day xx
ReplyDeleteLove it - that shower curtain is brilliant (and looks a lot more expensive than it is).
ReplyDeleteI do love yellow and have had 2 very yellow living rooms in the past!
I like it. Love the curtains and the towels. So bright and springy.
ReplyDeleteOh its lovely - yellow is one of my favourite colours, so warm and cheery. And I LOVE the curtains - just fab!!!

What a lovely fresh bathroom, just beautiful. I bought some of those fruity glasses from Ikea too, though they are used for breakfast juice, not toothbrushes! The curtains are fabulous :-)
ReplyDeleteYou did a really good job there. Don't know why but I actually prefer small bathrooms which is fortunate, given the size of ours.
ReplyDeleteI love it! It's so fresh and light, and love the way you've accessorised. Small spaces are very difficult but you've done a fab job!
ReplyDeleteLove Claire xxx
It looks fantastic and I LOVE the yellow! Our bathroom is not to my taste but since we rent there is not much I can do to it. Your gorgeous accessories have me inspired though! x
ReplyDeleteAwww, it's so sunny and happy Gillian...whats not to love?
ReplyDeleteI really like the wall colour and all the thought that has gone into the small details ...gorgeous.

Don't you love it how parents are never afraid to tell you what they think?! I love it, perfect colour to greet you in the morning. The colours are great and that print is just so pretty! xo
ReplyDeleteYour newly painted bathroom looks really sunny and very uplifting.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy using and gazing at all the lovely new things which are dotted around the room and make it all so pretty.

Yes, looks great Gillian. I love how John tolerates your design choices! My husband is indifferent to everything interior design, so I just do whatever I want! x
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely burst of brightness on an otherwise freeeeeezing cold day. I love the way a colour can completely change your mood. Of course I imagine this would also look good with a few candles, a few bubbles and a few (ahem) glasses of wine (small ones of course!) x Jane
ReplyDeleteHi Gillian,
ReplyDeleteIt all looks perfect, so 'happy' looking - very well put together. Love the little Venetian mirrors!

I love the yellow bring on spring
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom turned out beautifully! I love the yellow. It looks like the color of butter. We chose a similar shade of yellow for our kitchen cabinets. And I agree, the yellow reflects any smidgen of light available and makes it look like a sunny day when in fact it's cold and gray outside. Again, brilliant bathroom redo on a budget!
ReplyDeleteDear Gillian
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful room. I really like the muted tones and the way that the shower curtain picks up all the other colours and brings the whole scheme together. Congratulations on a wonderful project.
Best wishes
Ellie
Your bathroom looks wonderful! I love the yellow it looks so sunny and love how all your accessories tie everything together. Well done, it looks truly fab.

AHHHHH it is beautiful! What a happy space. And my print looks perfect there. I love it all. Especially your shower curtain... off to take a look at those. lou xx
ReplyDeleteLooks perfect! My kitchen has yellow paint and a blue-green tiled backsplash. I love that combo!
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom's looking lovely - yellow is one of my favourite colours too because of the way it makes everything seem happy, warm and bright. And I love the shower curtain - good old M&S! x
ReplyDeleteI have had an on/off love affair with yellow over the years. I have yellow of in mind for my conservatory/playroom. I want a hit of colour, after being white throughout or a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom looks fab!!
Leanne. xx
I love the yellow. We too have a small bathroom infact, I would go as far as saying it is tiny! I think smaller than yours. I always say I couldn't swing a flea in it - not that I would want to!
ReplyDeleteJune
It looks beautiful, although I'm not a fan of yellow. I think it looks a very soft one and the accessories make it sing.
ReplyDeleteLovely... I wish I could redo my bathroom. I LOVE home decorating. We have both kids in private high s hook right now . No money left. But I do enjoy "watching" the remodel if your bathroom and dreaming. It looks wonderful :)
ReplyDeleteI love it, it's fabulous. It'll certainly put you in a good, jolly mood for the day when you go to brush your teeth in the morning.
ReplyDeleteLooks really lovely. You need a reminder of Spring on a day like today! x
ReplyDeleteIt's very pretty. I love that yellow, it's cheerful but soft. We are fortunate to have two bathrooms, but they are both fairly small. I'm always looking around for new bathroom ideas so I enjoyed this post a lot.
ReplyDeleteI love it! When you said you were painting it yellow I did wonder how that would match your tiles but the curtains, towels and print bring the colours together really well. Your new towel is so much brighter than the one you bought for me years ago which has been loved, used and washed many, many times. How I wish for such gleaming, lime scale-free taps! xxx
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, glad you are pleased with it. Love the towel too- 92 quid for a bath sheet though?!
ReplyDeleteI love yellow, our bedroom has yellow walls!
ReplyDeleteLOVE! We have a similar sized family bathroom so it is great to see that you CAN actually do things to it. We are thinking of joining ours with the toilet to create more space. Will show your pics to the hubby for inspiration x
ReplyDeleteLove it Gillian - very sunny and cheerful :-D I love how a little coat of paint can completely change the look and feel of a space. Great job! Mel x
ReplyDeleteI love your shower curtain!
ReplyDeleteWe are decorating at the moment and I have got half a wall painted yellow - still not sure but your lovely bathroom has swayed me. Can't believe how quickly you have pulled everything together x
ReplyDeleteI love your happy bathroom!
ReplyDeleteMy front room is yellow --but crazy orangey yellow so you feel that every meal should feature ethnic food. Definitely time for a change here.
I LOVE your bathroom. Everything is so well thought of. And I absolutely love the colour. I wouldn't mind having my bedroom painted like this. :)
ReplyDeleteHello Gillian, you did a good job!!!!! I love little vintage mirrors and shower curtains. Happy week. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's great Gillian ... so warm and sunny ... I really love the shower curtain ... perfect for spring ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteHa! Your dad is funny. I love your bathroom. And the accessories are just perfect x
ReplyDeleteIt's so lovely, Gillian!! It's like walking into a beautiful, sunny spring day! Yellow is such a happy color!
ReplyDeleteWow Gillian, I'm constantly amazed by your spaces/photos. Looks fantastic, and I love the yellow. It makes it feel warm indeed. I also love all the patterns and florals. I don't think I could get away with having such floral patterns in our bathroom.
ReplyDeleteI think you may have inspired me to think about our bathroom again. We rent so can't do anything about the painting, mirrors etc. I think it has automatically been added to the list of projects for the house. hopefully Spring will catch up with us soon. (snowing here too, alternating with sunshine).
Spring has sprung! It might only be in your lovely bathroom, but at least it has sprung! :) x
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your lovely blog. Your bathroom is such an inspiration. We inherited a rather yucky kitchen and bathroom when we moved into our house a year and a half ago. We only had budget to do the kitchen so we're still living with the bathroom. It has a white suite so I figure I could do a lot to improve it with some tile paint, wall paint and some new accessories. Like yours it is tiny and north facing. I love your yellow walls. We have yellow in our hall, landing and stairs. It's very 'in your face' but makes everything feel so cheerful, even on the dullest of days. I'm now thinking we should continue it into the bathroom as yours looks so lovely and cheerful. Fiona x
ReplyDeleteI think it's lovely! I grew up in a house where every room was colourful - not necessarily bright and loud but there wasn't a neutral wall in sight. I miss that! It looks cheery and warm, and I love the shower curtain :)
ReplyDeleteOh I just love it Gillian! So cheerful and sweet, like a spring meadow.
ReplyDeleteIt looks really pretty Gillian, I really love that shower curtain, so spring like! I'm enjoying catching up on everyone's posts this week, being away has mucked up my blog reading schedule somewhat! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am listing for your Kartell Componibili unit. I also love the candy stripe flannel!
ReplyDeleteHello Gillian,
ReplyDeleteI love it! It looks so lovely and refreshing, the yellow zings Srping.
Nina xxx
i love it! so cheery! i wish you could come redo our bathroom. i think it was remodeled in the 1980's. it has brass fixtures and really nothing can fix it.
ReplyDeleteanyway, i love the yellow and all of your thoughtful details. it's all about the details!
Hi, Such a happy bright place!!! Perfect for a glass of bubbly and a good book!!! Well done!!
ReplyDeleteLove

Hello there, it all looks so happy and sunny, love it! Do be careful with your print hanging in there though, I once ruined a picture by putting in the bathroom, as the dampness got in. :( Love your choice of colour, it's similar to our kitchen, painted in January, hooray for sunny yellow! Roll on spring too! xx
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm another who loves it! Brilliantly done :D
ReplyDelete(We once painted a small bathroom a jolly lime green. Everyone who went in there immediately looked like they were going to be sick! The following day we repainted it white.)
Love the colors :)

This is such a gorgeous happy space!!! You did good, hun
ReplyDeleteOooh I LOVE it. Very daffodil just as I had imagined and with the gorgeous artwork and mirrors and accessories what a lovely sunny little room. Well done and bring on more makeovers anytime you like. melx
ReplyDeleteooh! love it! Our bathroom is smaller than yours! We cannot fit a pedestal sink in ours so have to make do with the smallest hand basin ever and the room is not high enough for a shower! I played safe with white!! However I did throw a splash of pink in with a gingham roller blind and fushia bath mat! SNAP!! We have the same facecloths!!! Do your prints not spoil with the steam in bathroom? xXx
ReplyDeleteI love your bathroom. I don't know if it's brighter in the flesh, but in the pics it looks quite buttery and as you say, lovely and warmer. Strangely the thing that really made me sit up, was the tumbler that you used to hold the toothbrushes, such a good idea, it looks so pretty. I actually have two of those glasses in the kitchen.. one might need to be re-homed!
