White Walls

Remember that blue wall we were going to paint over? Well we painted over it. Two coats of pure brilliant white.

It wasn't that I hated the blue wall, more that I'd been looking at that colour and those little pictures for the last six years and needed a change. And what a difference it makes!

There is so much more light in the room. I changed the lampshades on the bedside table lamps and I love this blue shade against the white wall. It was bought from a company called Mibo about seven years ago. They used to do the most fantastic range of mid-century influenced lamps, wallpaper and cushions but they don't make them anymore, as I discovered when I tried to order another for the other side.

The shelf above the bed is in fact a picture ledge from Ikea. I love the way I can change the prints and pictures depending on my mood and the seasons. Currently, we have a reproduction travel print of Whitby, which used to hang above the fireplace in the living room, a little framed postcard from the National Portrait Gallery (Contemplation by Adele Wagstaff), and a small tile image of the Virgin Mary, bought for a couple of euros from a little shop in Sorrento, Italy on a work trip years ago. No theme, just images I like and colours I am drawn towards. The garland is from littlenestbox on Etsy. I love the colour and geometric shapes against the white, and the juxtaposition of modern neons and older images.

And the best thing about that big, white blank canvas behind the bed? I can do Ways With Bedding! From left to right I give you "pinks", "bright colours" and "blues" or "all white" as we have above. I've had all this bedding and these throws and blankets for a while, nothing is new, but now it all sort of feels new.

So, for the cost of a tin of paint and a picture ledge I feel like I have a whole new bedroom.

The only thing I have found is that, with a white wall, you need to have the right sort of lighting. The nasty energy saving light bulb in the overhead light makes the white look horribly clinical and blue-ish. But thankfully the bedside lamps, and the one of my dressing table, have a nice soft, warm sort of light bulb and so when we spend any length of time in this room (which is basically when we are reading in bed at night) these are the lights we use. And it's very nice.

  5. White always looks very clean I think, well, it does in other peoples houses but in mine it would just get scruffy in 2 minutes. Love the idea of the shelf to display pictures.

  6. Gillian it looks beautiful. What a gorgeous room. It reminds me of Jen's home a little, with the metal bed frame and garland. Which reminds me I need one of those garlands too! xx

  8. I didn't think I would like it. I thought it would be dull and clinical but I have to say I do. It looks really bright and nice and I love that you have all those different bedding looks to switch it up. Very nice.

  10. Dear Gillian
It looks really good and makes an excellent canvas for the other colours you add in as the mood takes you.

  11. I love the way this looks. Our bedroom walls are white too (we plan to do a fresh coat this summer) and I agree, if we have the overhead light on, it looks a little harsh, but with the bedside lamps it's much warmer. I love the way you changed the look of the bed so easily, that's really fun! I wanted a white duvet cover and P talked me out of it, saying it would get too dirty. So ours is reversible, ditsy floral on one side, white with pale green stripes on the other. But white would be so versatile. I love the Virgin Mary tile on the shelf, the colors are very rich.

  12. I could be made to eat my words of advice to people decorating in the UK here ... never to choose Brilliant white as our skies are so grey (usually!) that this colour just doesn't 'work' and a broken white is better, but this room looks lovely with your highlights of colour. We are currently decorating our bathroom, but instead of your pretty primary shades we have chosen wallpaper in a toile de jouy from the Galerie 2 collection so hope it will look pretty. Love your pink and white checked rug.

  14. It looks great. We don't have any white walls in our house, I tried white once but didn't like it. I can admire white walls in other people's houses though and I can see the benefit when it comes to using colourful accessories. Love the row of three pics with different looks.

  16. Fab. Genius idea that you've now got 3 bedrooms for the price of one. Am liking the idea that you can just keep adding to this, rather than having the same old same old until the next time your walls are scruffy enough to have to decorate again! I am stealing this idea from you. I hope you don't mind Gillian! x

  18. Love it!! It looks so fresh. I was just contemplating one of those Ribba ledges above my bed too! I also have a Mibo shade and can't believe they don't make them anymore. They do still turn up on Ebay sometimes. X

  24. A great transformation. If only I had half your energy! You are right just different cushions and a throw can give a room a complete new look too and that one doesn't require as much effort!

  25. I really liked your blue wall very much but know what you mean after a few years and as I am in the very slow process of painting Betsy white everywhere I love love love white walls and the canvas they become for art and other treasures. Was thinking at the start of the post that you could do with a bit more colour and voila you came up with a bundle, going to be very fun mixing up that room now. mel x

  26. Could you come and paint over a blue wall here! It looks lovely. I find white is best as I frequently re-paint places where little people have muckied :)

  28. Although I loved your blue wall, I can see what you mean about the white making it all look much fresher. The picture shelf is a great idea and saves knocking loads of holes in the wall when you fancy a change - I feel a trip to IKEA coming on. Also love the blue lampshade. But I miss your lovely blue patchwork quilt :-( x

  29. Gorgeous! I love white walls as a blank canvas for pictures to stand out and, as you have so beautifully demonstrated, it is so easy to change the look of a room with different textiles. Love that lamp shade too! XX

  30. The white has given you so many opportunities with colour in the room, each one of them is really lovely, I would be so happy to flop into bed at the end of the day looking as inviting as they do!
The picture gallery is such a simple but fab idea so you can change pictures when the mood takes you.

  36. I have lampshade envy. My bedroom is white. It was a deliberate choice so that I could go to town with all the bedding I've amassed over time. I also have a floating shelf above my bed, and love to change what's on it according to my mood.

You have a beautiful home, Gillian.

  43. Oh, how lovely your bedroom is. It looks so calm. I am living in an absolute tip while the house is being done, stuff everywhere not to mention the dust. We are doing the whole of the new upstairs in white and your beautiful calm space has made me look forward to the day I go to bed in my new, white bedroom. Cannot beat white as the base colour for a room. katie x
