Flying By

We've reached that time of year again, that time when everything speeds up and becomes frantic as we race towards a deadline. Calendars, and diaries, days and evenings, all are full and claimed. The days by work and housework, the evenings by fun and socialising (rarely), or all-consuming tiredness (usually). It's end of term next Tuesday and my last day at work on Wednesday. Like Christmas, it's a happy and festive time in the school calendar but there is so much to do, to remember to do, in these last few days. It's safe to say we're counting down to the holidays.

This of course is the reason why I've not blogged much lately, and hardly visited any of your blogs, and I'm already looking forward to a few mammoth blogging sessions next week when we break up. My laptop is very slow and takes so long to power up (like, fifteen minutes) and then works so slowly that I almost dread turning it on, and my laptop is what I use to edit photos and blog. And this is when I enjoy using Instagram the most, when I still want to share and chat with my friends and feel connected to my online community, but I don't have any spare time. (You can find me here if you like.) It takes me a couple of hours to write a blog post as I am as slow as my computer, it would seem, especially when I have a lot of photos, but Instagram takes moments. Seconds, even.

So, in lieu of a proper blog post and any photos from my big camera, here is what I've been doing over the last week:

Angus and tiger enjoying lunch last Sunday in Guildford. He won that tiger at the school fair and he's called Chill Tiger. He reminds me of the tiger from the book The Tiger Who Came to Tea

A corner of our bedroom on a dismal, gloomy, wet Monday morning.

Our living room. I was sitting drinking a cup of tea in an after-work slump thinking how much I hate 5pm and all that needs to be done around that time.

Reading with Angus on Tuesday night. It was a really sweet bed time; he used to love (love) this book when he was smaller, pointing and squealing at certain pages. He still likes it now and even thought he's quite capable of reading it himself he likes me to read it to him. And I like to read it to him, and it makes me a bit nostalgic for previous bed time routines and a bit breathless at how fast he's growing up.

Walking to the pub with John on Thursday night for our first night out together in about a year, I think. Something about the heat, the trees and the sky reminded me of holidays spent in the Vendee in France.

A humid, pre-rain sky.

Bedtime faffing in Bella's room on Friday.

In the woods with my nieces on Saturday.

Looking for Mr Fox.

Crocheting teacher gifts in the garden.

Today, baking more teacher gifts.

Apricot and nut biscotti, very nice.

And finally a quick trip to the beach this afternoon where the sky really was that blue.

Seeing my Instagram photos here so big reminds me that the camera on my phone isn't nearly as good as the DSLR I use for my blog photos, and that I will continue to lug about the big camera because it is worth it.

Have a great week lovelies.

  1. The big camera is worth it, but it's so cool to be able to get the quick shots like you shared here, especially that last one. I'm glad you've captured the little moments while things have been so hectic.

  3. Lovely photos, I like how you've mentioned the time of day they were taken. Each part of the day has it's own feeling doesn't it. And I know exactly what you mean about 5pm. I daren't sit down, I'd never get up again. It looks like you've really settled into your home and into life with a beach nearby. I'm glad your move went so well. Enjoy the last couple of days of term. We finished on Friday, and I heaved a very big sigh of relief. My eldest has finished primary school now though, it was all a bit emotional. CJ xx

  4. The downtime after end of term madness is so good. I experienced the whirlwind last month but am in the middle of a very relaxing reprieve. I've no doubt you will savour your own reprieve. Enjoy it lovely. Bee xx

  5. School finished for us on Friday and there's definitely an end-of-the-race feeling - I am SO looking forward to not having to get up for the school run tomorrow! I still read with small daughter at bedtime even though she can quite happily read the same novels for herself. I've quite enjoyed working our way through the Harry Potter books and the Roman Mysteries as I probably wouldn't have read them for myself - long may it last! xx

  8. The quality of a photo isn't in the quality of the camera, but in the quality of the photographer...
I really like these photos ! Don't worry about pixelquality and other stuff - just look at that last picture : it is a perfect composition ! On IG it also immediately drew my attention ! Gorgeous !
I never realized school holidays differ so much in Europe - most countries already have had almost a month of holiday. So you still have a lot of fun to look forward to :-) !

The biscotti look delicious, like cantucci really. Love the tiger! He has something 1950s about his eyes.

  13. Hey Gillian,
I have just massively stalked the interior of your wardrobe......
Olly and Alf break up on Wednesday, and then it's go, go, go for a couple of weeks chez Paxton.
I adore Angus and his tiger. Growing fast, but still so little.
Here's to a restful school holiday, my friend.

  16. I think we must be the last people in the UK (northern hemisphere!) to break up for the summer as our primary school limps on until this Friday. We are all Exhausted and looking forward to free-flowing days. I agree that your photos are fabulous, whether on IG with your phone or on your blog with your SLR. You have the eye! Have a very wonderful end of term and relaxing days afterwards. Sam x

  22. Interesting remark about the camera, I have been realising the same thing. The phone is great and very tempting because it is so quick, but my 'big' camera is better in many ways. Your photo's are fab, though!! X

  23. Hi great to pop in and catch up with your news. Those biscotti look fabulous. Jo X

  24. Ah yes, 5pm, it's still a difficult time of day even though I don't have any children at school any more. I know what you mean about getting blog posts done, I have an ancient laptop that is also very slow - you can almost hear it creaking as it loads the photos! I still love blogging though and am determined to get a balance between Instagram and the blog. Hope you are enjoying your new job. Have a good week. Jane xx

  25. Hello, would you be able to let me know where the recipe for the biscotti is from please? Thanks x

    1. Hello, yes of course. It's from a brilliant book called the Popina Book of Baking by Isidora Popovic. It's one of the best baking books I have, I can't recommend it highly enough. Worth every penny. Here's a link to an online version of the recipe. I left out the figs as I didn't have any and just doubled the amount of apricots.
