After any kind of break or holiday I relish that point when I sit down on a Sunday night and go through all my photos. Inevitably I take too many and - lucky for you - delete about 95% of them, but I like to reflect on all that has happened, all that we did and saw and experienced.
We had such a wonderful half term break! We really did. The main part of the week was spent at home pottering, doing chores, getting stuff done, but in a relaxed way. After two months in our house (is it really only that long?) a large part of our free time is still spent doing house and garden related tasks. The garden is really starting to take shape now and I'll show you more soon. On Friday morning, our friends from Yorkshire came to stay with us for the weekend. We were pretty excited (GUESTS! Guests in our HOUSE!) as these are old, old friends - from university - and there is always a lot of laughter and reminiscing when we get together. They have two boys similar in age to Bella and Angus which makes planning what to do easier.
Once they'd arrived, after bacon sandwiches and as soon as the rain stopped, we visited Bosham, a nearby village on the Sussex coast.
It's a very quaint and charming little village, and picturesque too.
There's a gentle, meandering walk you can take around the harbour and I like to amuse myself by admiring the houses and having "if we won the lottery" type conversations.
It was breezy, but the sun shone and all the wildflowers were out.
The other past time I like to indulge in here is Garden Admiring. Many of the cottages have large front gardens, some walled, and all beautifully planted. Look at this border!
Plus it's the kind of place where kids can eat ice creams and find crabs and you can finish the day in a pub beer garden, so it's something for everyone really.
Saturday - mercifully - was warm and sunny which was just as well as I was intent on showing off our local area. So much has changed since I grew up here and it's fun to rediscover it. We headed down to Southsea, a quirky, touristy neighbourhood on the south coast of Portsmouth. I dragged everyone into the Model Village which hasn't change one bit since I went there as a child - read into that what you will - but was thoroughly enjoyed by each small person present.
We had a nice time wandering around Southsea and looking in the vintage shops.
There is only so much of this wandering/browsing you can do with four children though, so we moved on to our next destination: Spinnaker Tower. (You might just be able to make out some figures abseiling down the tower in the photo below.)
Should you ever find yourself in Portsmouth on a clear day, do go up because the views over the Solent from the top are just fantastic.
You can see the boats come in and out and it's really like looking down on another kind of model village.
A section of the tower floor is made from glass and you can walk on it. I'm afraid I just couldn't do it. Even though I know that it's as safe as the floor I was standing on, and I don't think I am especially afraid of heights, I just couldn't walk on that glass floor.
Bella could though. I was surprised by my reaction too - every part of me wanted to take her arm and lead her off that glass. The rational part of my brain knew that she was probably safer there than walking along a main road, but the mother part of my brain wanted her safe and next to me.
Do you think you could have walked on the glass floor?
So, a good weekend all in all, and I am now gearing myself up for the week ahead. It's going to be a busy one.
I totally am with you with the glass floor thing. I HATE my daughter doing anything like that! I don't like her going near the edge of cliffs or bridges or anything. It's still a huge drop even if it is under a safe glass floor!
ReplyDeleteLooks and sounds like a great half-term break, indeed! Love the villages - the "big one" as well as the model one. I am such a kid when it comes to models of buildings, and even better, of whole villages; I could easily spend hours there looking at every little detail and imagining myself as being a very small person in there.
ReplyDeleteAs for the glass floor... hmm... I think I could and would have done it.
Forgot to say that you saying "is it really only that long" makes me think your new house does completely feel like your home now.
Deleteeeek. glass floor no thanks. my daughter wouldn't go on either I know. but the boy would, and probably jump up and down to freak me out!
ReplyDeleteI am fine with glass floors they are sort of crazy aren't they? You have some great holiday photos. We had mixed weather too but kept on the move. Jo x
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great week with some beautiful blue skies! I don't mind glass floors too much, we visited the CN tower in Canada and the lift also has a glass panel in the floor! Worth it for the views from the top x
ReplyDeleteWe went up the CN tower too. I had to close my eyes in the lift and also wanted to haul my daughters off the glass floor at the top - they lay face down on them! Beautiful photos of Bella and Angus. xx
ReplyDeleteThere are so many quaint villages in your part of the world! I wish we had a few near us, it is all pebble dash and downtrodden in many villages here. I could never ever walk on that glass floor. I think I feel dizzy just thinking about it. x
ReplyDeletePicture postcard perfect, looks like a lovely place, when I travelled across Canada we went to the CN tower which had a glass floor, I did it bit it ready is the strangest feeling, so I can completely understand your line of thinking

Beautiful ! No, I so couldn't walk on a glass floor ! I think that your new house must really be home now if it seems like you have been there for way longer than you actually have - a good sign ! Have a lovely week Gillian, Kate xx
ReplyDeleteI do like the look of Bosham. What a great-looking place. Sounds as though you had a super week. I'm ok with heights and would have stood on the glass floor. But I might have held my breath :-) Sam x
ReplyDeleteGreat to get together with old friends. You live in a lovely place!
ReplyDeleteJacqui x
The wild flowers got me. Beautiful. Nope, I wouldn't be on that glass floor and would be in a wound up ball of eeeek should one of my girls go on it but I would try my best to not let that stop them. Eeeeking out at thinking bout it now!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your lovely pics, we also love Bosham and 'dream-house shopping' round the harbour there, and the views from the Spinnaker Tower. I have stood on the glass floor but it did make my tummy quite flippy! Nicky x
ReplyDeleteHow did I not know there was a model village in Southsea?! I grew up less than 20 miles from there but have never heard of it - it's now top of my places-to-visit list next time we go down! And I'm with you on the Spinnaker Tower - absolutely can't stand on the glass floor. Lovely to see some pictures of places I know through different eyes.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a great week. I love going up the Spinnaker tower, it's so interesting to get that different view point and see where everything is. I cant stand on the glass either, but the kids love it! I had no Idea there was a model village in Southsea, will have to check that out one day! xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a great week. We have had some great visits to the dockyards, boat trips, going round the old boats etc with the all in, all year ticket but haven't yet done the spinnaker tower. I think I might manage the glass floor but might like you change my mind when it came to it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely looking seaside town. Today it is humid, damp, and overcast, so your bright breezy seaside pictures were a treat.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great weekend!!! Wonderful places. :))
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though you had a fabulous time with your guests! You might have deleted a lot of pictures, but you definitely took some lovely ones! A friend was telling me recently about somewhere they went that had a glass floor and all around it was carpeted. One of the security people told my friend that actually the whole floor was glass but until the put the carpet on no one would walk on it! Quite a thought. I am glad that you had such a great time and got to entertain in your new home! xx
ReplyDeleteYour guests must have had a stunning time! Glad the weather cooperated with you. I love that I can see your corner of the world through your fabulous pictures....although it makes me want to go myself!! Enjoy your week...pace yourself!! And keep clicking pics!

ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty place Bosham is - and I love model villages! I haven't been to Portsmouth for many years, maybe a visit is due. Not suer about the glass floor though!
ReplyDeleteCaz xx
I wouldn't have enjoyed walking on the glass floor but I probably could have just about managed it. No doubt my boys would have all gone on together and jumped up and down and my other would have laughed and I would have almost died of fright. Great views though! It sounds like you had an excellent week. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteBosham sounds a lovely place to visit! I'd love to stand on that glass floor and look down :) Things like that don't bother me - my fears are all irrational, like alien abduction, haha!
ReplyDeleteHey Gillian,
ReplyDeleteThat row of terraced houses in Southsea look just like the street I lived in as a child! Your children are so lovely. Angus is the spit of his Dad, and Bella a mix of you both. And no, I would definitely not stand on that glass. I hyperventilate on a step ladder. I would have been hysterical if one of my boys had stood where Bella had. What a girl!!
Leanne xx
What a great place to visit. I want to come there so badly someday. I don't know how I'd feel about the glass floor...probably giddy with fear and excitement. I'd be lying face down, probably. I'd tell everyone it was for a better view. :)
ReplyDeleteForget glass floors, what about that lovely border on the exterior of someone's garden wall! Just so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMargaret P
Bosham is such a pretty village, we used to visit there often when staying with my Aunt. I've driven passed the Spinacker Tower but have not been up to the top. The views looked amazing but I'm not sure whether I would have been brave enough to walk on that glass floor.
ReplyDeleteGlad to had a great week.
I would not even have the courage to look at my kid standing on the glass floor!
ReplyDeleteLovely pics - especially the two of your children!
Oooo I had a boyfriend years ago who lived in Bosham, I'd forgotten how beautiful it is. Fantastic photos.
ReplyDeleteI like glass floors, I have jumped up & down on one before now! However seeing my children on there was an entirely different experience. I'm glad you had such a great week. x
ReplyDeleteOhh, glass floor, no thank you! Bosham is pretty, thanks for the reminder, I haven't been there since I was a little girl. xx
ReplyDeleteLovely picks, memories for ever! Yes I could have walked on it, I'm the one who sat and dangled my legs over the edge of the Grand Canyon! Xx
ReplyDeleteGlass floor, mmmm not so keen! Beautiful photos of a lovely weekend. I am delighting in all the pictures of your new/old home area. Definitely somewhere I would live to visit sometime. Bee xx

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely weekend. I'd stand on the glass but not so sure I'd want my girls doing it - the brilliant double standard of being a parent eh? Such lovely photographs xx
ReplyDeleteLovely images m'dear ... I felt like I was right there reading this, and yes, that includes standing on the glass floor :o)
ReplyDeleteWhilst you were up the Spinnaker tower last weekend I was in Fareham for a walk with a great view down the water looking at the tower!

Undeniably believe that which you stated.
ReplyDeleteYour favorite reason appeared to be on the internet the easiest thing
