I am assuming that you're as nosey as me and that, therefore, you'd like to see some photos of our new house. I've been sharing corners and snippets of our home here, but there is still a lot to do in every single room and it's in no way finished. It will never be finished, I know that, but my list of outstanding jobs motivates me to get things done. Some tasks are large, like decorating the hall, stairs and landing (my heart is already sinking - all those doors to paint...) others are smaller like changing that bare hanging light bulb in the dining room for a proper light fitting. But even the small jobs require spare time and spare money, and those things are in short supply.
But last week, I declared Angus's room Finished. I think it might be one of my favourite rooms in the house actually, which came as a surprise; it's an awkward shape and size, there is only one place to put the bed, the carpet is knackered...but it reflects him somehow and he just loves his room, and that's probably why I love it too. There is no matching scheme, nothing that organised. Just neutral walls and lots of colour, black and white. All we did in this room was paint everywhere, choosing an off-white for the walls and white for the ceiling and woodwork. While I love the look of pure white paint, I knew it would look very cold in this north-east facing room and this is much warmer. We will replace the carpet at some point (it's in a bad way) but for now hiring a carpet cleaner and buying a rug sufficed.
His bed is one half of the bunk beds he used to share with Bella, and which used I to share with my sister when I was little. The white unit beside his bed used to live in our bathroom, but I much prefer it here. It's perfect for storing the random bits and bobs which six year old boys collect.
The poster is a sheet of wrapping paper, a fun and cheap way to decorate walls, and I used these to hang it. The fairy lights are from Cable and Cotton, and the duvet set and hanging toy storage are both from IKEA.
The window sill holds toys or clutter, depending on your interpretation, and a black out roller blind helps keep out the morning sun. The view is nice too, lots of trees and rooftops.
At the other end of the room are two sets of cupboards. I just love the coat rack* here, providing both colour and storage. It's one of my favourite things ever - we've had it for years, and I think it's looks brilliant in a child's bedroom, or anywhere for that matter.
The rug was an inexpensive find and I love the eye catching chevrons.
As you can imagine, both Bella and Angus love to go in here, shut the doors and play or read. Kids like small spaces, don't they?
The bookcase and picture ledge (both IKEA) provide not only storage but space for favourite toys and books, very important for little personalities to shine through.
The wall opposite the window and bed holds a large wall map. As Angus grows, we might put a desk on that wall, perhaps a drop-down one to save space for playing on the floor.
Something Angus loves to do is stand on that toy box and look at the map. His love of geography is almost as great as his love of badgers, and it has fired his imagination in a way I didn't think possible. At bedtime, after his story, John and he play this game where Angus stands on the toy box and, using his plastic sword like a pointer, finds the countries that John calls out to him. "Peru!" "Mongolia!" "Greenland!" The faster the better, and there are extra points if Angus can also name the capital. Please don't think we're those kind of "make everything a learning opportunity!" parents, trust me, we're really not, and this game often ends with Angus high as a kite and me moaning at John for getting Angus excited right before bedtime.
It occurs to me now, as I write this, how much I really enjoyed helping the children decorate, furnish and arrange their rooms. I had to know my place on quite a few occasions, stepping back and letting them do things themselves, hard as I found that. Bella especially had very strong opinions on absolutely everything, and there was no way she was going to let me make the decisions for her. Angus was a little easier to persuade, but it's still very much his room and not mine.
Two last things: this is not a sponsored post, I've just provided links as I know people like to know where things come from, as do I when I read blog posts. And no, it's not always this tidy and yes I tidied it for the photos.
*
* I cannot believe how much these cost now!! We bought ours about ten years ago (in a bygone era of two incomes and no children) and seriously, it was about £100 less than this. I still love it though.
Looks perfect for any 6 year old...wish I could be 6 again! Oh and that little den, I'd never come out! Well done Gillian, your house is becoming more and more like a home everyday! :) xxx
ReplyDeleteI love Angus' room, especially that little hidden den. That is so special. He and Bella are so lucky!
ReplyDeleteI was shocked to see the price of that coat rack! I've seen cheaper versions though, and I think they look quite similar. X
Yes I am nosey and love having a little peek at what others have done to their homes. The rug is eye catching, and I am now wondering if I could quilt one for my room.
ReplyDeleteI love it, it brought back many happy memories of when my boys were little. The windowsill was always the most important place to store treasures. Animals of all descriptions for Rob & whatever the latest craze was for Harry. All changed now of course but your post brought back many happy memories for me x
ReplyDeleteIt looks terrific, Gillian. I really love the closet! Wow. I'd like to play in there myself. I love that he enjoys his map so much. I hung a world map in my son's room when he was about seven and it's been a huge hit with him too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for understanding my nature. This saves me having to ask to go to the toilet when I come to your house (please tell me you don't have a downstairs loo; the pits for a nosey person like me)
ReplyDeleteOh, and I want (seriously lust after) a Narnia wardrobe like that.
Looks a fantastic room for a six year old. :) I love the idea of the Narnia space - wonderful memories for when he is older I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you admitted to tidying up - I could have got quite a complex there!
x
What a great room Gillian! Cool and fun. Perfect for a little boy as he grows. And who wouldn't live their own doorway to Narnia! Bee xx

ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog Gillian, it's full of great ideas and personality. We are house hunting for somewhere bigger for us and our three little ones and reading your room decor posts makes me very excited for when it's our turn! Keira x
ReplyDeleteOh, you've done such a good job. I just love the Narnia wardrobe and wish I'd had one as a child. You seem to have so much more space in this house and are making the best use of it and decorating so nicely. (as usual). Can you come and give me a hand?(giggle). Angus will be able to find Victoria on the map and know where we live, though I often think Australia looks small on the world map. Thanks for the post and take care.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for showing us Angus' room - there are so many glorious things. I love the coat rack and the canine alphabet poster, and that den behind the wardrobe has got to be every child's dream. I love the World map too - I remember painting one onto L's wall when we first moved here, with the aid of an overhead projector. It took me ages and broke my heart when we eventually had to paint over it! I think I'm going to have to have a trip to Ikea soon to buy one of those picture ledges. xx
ReplyDeleteHis room is wonderful! That closet space is the best, I can understand why Bella and Angus would enjoy hanging out in there. How great does it feel to have a whole room checked off? I can't wait to know what it feels like! Thanks for sharing, I do love seeing people's spaces.
ReplyDeleteThe Narnia wardrobe looks brilliant- I would definitely make a den if I had a secret room in my wardrobe. And it is lovely to see how your house is coming along.
ReplyDeleteEvery kid needs a Narnia wardrobe! And every grown up too, come to that!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a fabulous room to grow up in :)
A beautiful room, I wish mine was like that! I especially love the secret den in the Narnia wardorbe, it's brilliant :-) xxx
ReplyDeleteYou assume correctly! Love to nose around people's houses and it's great to see this room. It's lovely, a great place to play and the Narnia wardrobe is fab, perfect for a child but i think I'd quite like one too!
ReplyDeleteS x
Love it! That little den... We had those picture ledges at our old house and left them there but I'd like some more for the new house.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain re. painting doors. Woodwork is the worst, isn't it?
Almost weekend. Hope you have a good one.

It's a lovely room and I like almost everything about it. That wardrobe with the extra space behind the clothes - I would have LOVED to have something like this as a kid, probably would have never left it unless I had to :-)
ReplyDeleteHooray for IKEA, where would we all be without! My entire bedroom furniture (and many other pieces in my flat) are from there. I have the same chest of drawers (from the MALM series), just not in white, but in birch.
I LOVED this post. It is honest, refreshing and the pictures of Angus's bedroom show how much love and care you have taken over his room. We moved 7 months ago and the DIY list is sometimes demoralising more than motivating so I really love touring other people's houses and magazines for ideas and inspiration. Your blog is one of my favourites...will keep reading!
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely Gillian, especially that fantastic cupboard, you're right, they do like small spaces. I still find my eleven year old shoe-horned into a tiny space in our top room. I love the view Angus as well, absolutely gorgeous, all that green. My littlest boy is six too, and he's very happy with his room, even though it's the littlest bedroom. I'm sure he'll find it a bit small eventually, but he's happy right now. You've reminded me though, I must get a black-out blind. It's getting lighter and lighter and he is not getting off to sleep well at all at the moment. Beautiful job, well done to you both! CJ xx
ReplyDeleteThat den is the best thing ever! I'm jealous....I know my children would be too. And your tidiness puts me to shame, it seems every thing our children own is on display. All. Of. The. Time.
ReplyDeleteHey Gillian,
ReplyDeleteThis has given me loads of ideas for when Olly moves from his teeny tiny room into Sam's bedroom when Sam goes off to Uni. I often think that wrapping paper would make good posters, but didn't want to just tack them on the wall. So I have made a note of the hangers you have used. Obviously my favourite bit is the den. I'd quite like one of them now actually. Bella and Angus must have so much fun in there! I can't wait to see more of your lovely new house!
Leanne xx
You have SO MUCH done in such a short time.. I have lost my new house make over mojo.. I just need more hours in the day to get everything done. Angus' room is very very cool.. a closet to Narnia! I am so jealous! For me!! A belated happy birthday to the little guy too! Hazel x
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful, so bright and clean, should see my 17 yr old son's room... second thought better not..
ReplyDeleteAmanda xx
I love the room you have a real flair for design and putting things in the right place. I love the Narnia wardrobe it kind of reminds me of the film E T where they hide him in the closet. Can't wait to see Bella's room to, I love a good old nosey :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks fab love the coat hooks and wow that magical wardrobe, I bet the children just love it.
ReplyDeleteClare x
I would like a narnia wardrobe too. I might never come out x
ReplyDeleteHi the room is great, the rug is just the sort of thing I was after too so thanks for saving me the effort of looking. My sons room is just about to be revamped and all the Thomas things now have to be replaced with a football theme, thankfully he still loves his teddies. I don't think I would leave Narnia either! Lucy x
ReplyDeleteOoh I love the room, especially the wee den. My kids would adore that! You've done a great job :)
ReplyDeleteA glorious room but all entirely overshadowed by that AMAZING den. I'm so terribly jealous!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the room, but the den is the best! Compared to my boys it's amazingly clutter free and tidy. James was an obsessive collector and stuff spilled everywhere, oh how I miss it though. The bed is the same as the boys had when they shared a room. When we moved to a bigger house and they had a room each they were a bit sad not too be together. Gillian you have made some warm and happy memories come back, as your posts so often do! Xxx
ReplyDeleteLove the room, and the secret den, oh my! How fabulous! My youngest loves maps too, he has a big map above his desk, and a globe, and several very detailed atlases! X
ReplyDeleteThat a wonderful room .I have been meaning to get some of those lovely lights for ages so thank you for sharing I have just ordered some. My grandson will be delighted.
ReplyDeleteI love that your son loves looking at a map. I have one in the bathroom of all places and ever since I was a child I pin the place I have visited. As our family has grown and they travel more pins have appeared. Its such a wonderful aide -memoire.
Have a lovely weekend
I´m totally in love with your blog since I discovered it, Gillian! Congratulations for the new house! it´s fantastic and it glows with your craft touches! ;)
ReplyDeletebest regards from Brazil
Your son must love his new bedroom, it looks wonderful and the den is just the icing on the cake!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you said you tidied up for the photos! Fabulous room. Lucky boy. I love the hide-out cupboard (how fab!), the colourful coat rack and that your son loves his map. I have some of those gorgeous Cable and Cotton lights in my kitchen (pinks, oranges and purples) and love them. Have a very good weekend Gillian. Sam x
ReplyDeleteOh I just love this room! Forget perfect for a 6 year old, I'd love to have it for myself (and I'm *way* older than 6)!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great room. It looks so fresh and bright. I have fallen in love with the den, what a fantastic little space. x
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely room! I like all the little touches and that den... oh how I wish my room had one of those :)
ReplyDeleteI have the same map on my wall but I better Angus has a much better grasp of where countries are than I do, I rarely look at mine!
That wee little space is the perfect place for little ones. It was reason enough to buy that wonderful house of yours. His bedroom is spotless!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
Lucky Angus, what a wonderful den for him to sleep and play in. It is wonderful that he is learning through play, there is no better way. Looking forward to seeing more of your lovely new house, you really are turning it into a lovely home. xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful room for a six year old. Angus is a lucky little guy! I love the view out the window. Hope you have a great weekend, Gillian!
ReplyDeleteHe bedroom is fantastic! I love the little den in the cupboard. I'm sure my boys would be thrilled with something similar. Can't wait to see the rest of your lovely home... x
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely bedroom, all bright and cheerful. I am envious of the den in the cupboard, I would have it as my secret reading space!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, Gillian and I love that den too :-) xx
ReplyDeleteI love it! My boys too slept in their dad's old bunk beds in separate rooms. My youngest son had the smaller room. When his brother moved out on his own, he still wanted to stay in his own little room rather than take the bigger one. In fact, just last summer (when he was 16) did he even take down this needlepoint farm picture my mom made for him when he was an infant. I really thought he would disband with it sooner, but some things just stick.
ReplyDeleteI love the little secret space behind the closet!
What a fab little snug place in the wardrobe. A lovely room and plenty of room to grow too.
ReplyDeleteLisa x
Cool room Gillian. Of course I do not have to think what a badger boy or any other boy needs, I am just trying my hardest to stay away from candy pink! I think I am through the worst of it now and they prefer purple and read. (How selfish!) Jo x
