My morning starts neon green, flashing and beeping.
It glows red and green over the top of the bedroom curtains as the sun hits the trees and cars on the drive below and sends colourful beams shooting upwards. (This always makes me think of the Northern Lights for some reason.)
My morning is the pale blue of my favourite-morning-brew-mug as I make the first (and best) cup of tea of the day.
After showering and dressing, my morning is the red of my make-up bag as I sit at my dressing table, gathering my thoughts and readying myself for the day ahead.
Downstairs, the rush begins. My morning is the primary brights of toast and jam on melamine plates, the white of glasses of milk poured, the brown of a second cup of tea.

It is the red of strawberries on top of my cereal.
The greys and pastels of a dishwasher waiting to be emptied.

There should just be time to brush teeth and hair, check all children are dressed and ready, open the curtains and make the beds before re-grouping in the hall where the brown clock determines whether I start shouting or not.
And the day begins.
I've tried to give you a flavour here of my normal, slightly rushed but very colourful weekday morning. Of course, it's half term this week - otherwise there would never have been time to take some photos! - and I am not rushing about like a mad woman today, but sitting in my dressing gown enjoying my second - actually, third - cup of tea and generally feeling quite relaxed. But it's always so interesting to observe colour in our daily lives, where we notice it, where we need it, where it's too much, where it soothes us and where it makes us happy.

What is The Colour Collaborative?
All creative bloggers make stuff, gather stuff, shape stuff, and share stuff. Mostly they work on their own, but what happens when a group of them work together? Is a creative collaboration greater than the sum of its parts? We think so and we hope you will too. We'll each be offering our own monthly take on a colour related theme, and hoping that in combination our ideas will encourage us, and perhaps you, to think about colour in new ways.
Great post Christina, love that you can still use melamine crockery, my boys are all on china and glass now, I miss the melamine days. Did you wake up at 6.45 and decide to take a photo 2 minutes later, or did you squeeze in an extra couple of minutes to make it feel like you were not really getting up at 6.45 and take the photo straight away?! X
ReplyDeleteSorry , just realised I wrote Christina's name in my comment, no idea why.......! X
DeleteIt took two minutes of faffing to get the light levels right!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of my activities in terms of color before.....going to be looking at my mornings (and evenings!!) a little differently today! :)
ReplyDeleteLove your comment about the brown clock determining whether or not you have to start shouting - let me tell you, it doesn't get any better as they get older! Also, I'm really impressed by the shine on your kettle! Enjoy the rest of half term. xx
ReplyDeleteI will confess that I gave it quick wipe! We are cursed down here with the delights of limescale, something we never had in Leeds. It's a nightmare, everything always looks filthy. :-(
DeleteI've yet to meet a mother who doesn't shout on school mornings. We have the added excitement of a train to catch. LOVE school holidays! Lovely post Gillian, thank you. Sam x
ReplyDeleteSuch a great post. In our house it is Josh that does the shouting me, at least 40 minutes before it is time to leave I am getting 'now have you done all your jobs, I don't want to be late'. (he has never been late, late in his eyes is getting there after the school gates have been unlocked!!!)
ReplyDeleteA nice morning routine Gillian. I know what you mean about having to shout a bit sometimes. I don't like to start the day with an alarm clock, so occasionally we're all late if I don't wake up. Usually the boys are up, but they don't bother waking me! Half term is a lovely break from routine isn't it. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteWell, you know how much I enjoy viewing the minutiae of someone else's day. It never gets old for me. I enjoyed seeing all the little things through the lens of color. Do you dread emptying the dishwasher like I do? I don't know why I dislike it so much. I hope you're having a good half-term break. It's nice to know there is something parallel going on over there at the same time (though our break stretches out interminably while yours is wonderfully finite!). :)
ReplyDeleteLovely to hear about your colourful mornings.
ReplyDeleteYour breakfast bears a remarkable resemblance to mine, although since reading Sarah's post I've been craving avocado!
ReplyDeleteWe have limescale here too - grrr - and shouting sometimes too ... a certain son can get himself up and off when he has a 7.00am start but, oddly, not a 9.00am. I think it must be the temptation to grab a few more minutes sleep, which is what I thought had happened with your 6.47 :)
Thank goodness for half term breaks! Hope you are all having fun. I love not having to set the alarm clock. I'm not usually up much later, but it still feels like a treat. x
ReplyDeleteI'm usually on a big rush on school day mornings I hardly notice the colours around me. I have to take Lulu with me when I'm doing the school run and there's always a fair bit of cajoling and marshalling before we can get out of the house : -) I hope you're all enjoying the school break. I'll keep this post in mind and try to slow down a bit and notice things from next week. I'll try! X
ReplyDeleteHmmm...never thought about looking at the colours of my morning. Will do tomorrow morning! Thankful for each new day no matter how rushed or crazy it seems. Funny...we get out of bed at the same time, just different time zones. If I was good at math, I could tell you what you're probably doing when I slip out of bed and start my day!! Lovely pics :)
ReplyDeletea lovely sense of your morning routine, and so much colour scattered throughout!
ReplyDeleteOur alarm clock has red digits and actually looks quite sinister...
ReplyDeleteI agree, those colours across your bedroom ceiling are reminiscent of the Northern Lights. I've never seen anything like that before!
And I have a red makeup bag too. It's difficult to lose, always a good thing.
Love the vibrancy of this post.
Sarah.
I loved having a peak into your morning routine! I am not a morning person. I like to ease into my mornings with several cups of coffee, and now that it is spring and the weather is warm, I usually step out onto the patio to see what has bloomed in the garden overnight. Slow and easy mornings are the best for me!
ReplyDeleteI shall look at the colours of my morning today having read this. A great post!
ReplyDeleteIt is those glimpses into other people's ordinary lives which I find so fascinating - because your ordinary can be my exotic, and the other way round.
ReplyDeleteLove the pale blue mug! That one would probably become my favourite one, too.
You make a hectic family morning sound very pleasant indeed! Enjoy the remaining half term holiday. xx
ReplyDeleteRed strawberries atop of cereal. Now there's a start to the day. Mayhem returns here on Monday morning and I doubt it will be as colourful as yours but I'll watch closely for surprises :)
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures x
What a great post, it has made me think I will pay more attention to the colours of my day.I agree those beams do remind me of the northern lights.
ReplyDeleteYes, they do look like the Northern Lights, those beams. I have to admit to being in a rush on school mornings, hurrah for half term xx
ReplyDeleteNo matter how early I get up there is always a bit if a rush going out the door to work! It was the same when our kids were little. Lovely colourful post.
ReplyDeleteHey Gillian,
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I bloody loathe being woken by the alarm. That sat bolt upright feeling, or the one eye open and then turning over with a sigh. But this time of year I find that I am awake and up before it's horrid insistence. Our mornings used to be very similar here, but now the older two get themselves up, showered and breakfasted. I only have to holler at Alfie a couple of times. So actually mine and Olly's start to the school day is quite relaxed. Unless he doesn't want to come in from the garden to put his uniform on....
A lovely post Gillian. I do enjoy the colour collaborative very much
Leanne xx
Lovely post! I really like the look of your mug... What wonderful teas and coffee you are probably going to enjoy in it... mmmhhhh!
ReplyDeleteTake care

hey there! it's been sooo long. i've been away... growing, tending, being...
ReplyDeletewhat wonderful collaborative. i enjoyed sharing your day through colour, thank you.
Lovely post for your Colour Collabrative. I've just been on catchup. Take care.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Gillian. We have a lot of similar colours in our mornings too.

This was a fun post - and yes, the first cup is always the best. :)
ReplyDeleteThat shot of the sunbeams on the ceiling is really impressive!
What a great post. The first cup of tea is always the best, especially if your favourite mug is available. I have a new mug so it is double lovely right now.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason your photo of the water bottles really makes me smile. I think it's the colours and unexpected angle. Thank you x
Colour, colour everywhere! We have the same neon water bottles. Always a pick me up in the morning. I love how the brown clock decides your tone of voice. The red clock does the same here! :) Bee xx

ReplyDeleteYour morning routine is very similar to mine. Replace tea with coffee though! (A good mug is one of life's necessities!!) And the fact that I've not needed an alarm for almost 6 years!!
ReplyDeleteYour morning sounds most familiar to me too. Those neons of the alarm and the lunch box, I can relate to that!
