I am continuing with my mission to find one good thing a day to celebrate throughout the month of January. It's still going well, I'm not struggling yet. My (self imposed) rules are that it has to be specific to winter, or as much as it can be, and have happened on that day. Otherwise it's cheating. I'm doing to the same on Instagram if any of you are on there. So, here is my third week.
15/31: Bulbs. So green, teasing us with their promise of spring. (The beautiful Hornsea bird was a Christmas present. I like how he perches there next to the plant pot.)

17/31: Hot chocolate. Really, it's small mug of hot chocolate with a lot of marshmallows. I like it when they melt and go all gooey.
19/31: Winter woollens, and buying luscious new yarn to make more woolly winter accessories. I've started a shawl. Yarn this fancy seemed to call for a shawl.
20/31: The most breathtaking sunrise. I have not tinkered with this photo in any way, these are the actual, glorious colours that I woke to on the morning of the 20th. I always think that the sunrises and sunsets we see in the winter months are our reward for living with the short, dark days.
21/31: There's still some Christmas cake left! We've eaten my dad's and now we're on to mine. I don't like marzipan or fondant icing so keep mine plain, and I also leave out the nuts and put in five times as many glace cherries as the recipe calls for. I love cherries in fruit cake, they're so sweet and sticky when you bite into them.
Thank you for all your comments lately. I do so value your interest, support and friendship, and am very consicous that I've not been able to visit many of your blogs lately. I loved hearing your feelings and thoughts about walking (and replied to a few - some really good points and issues cropped up), and you were very kind about my scarf. It's been very cold here on the south coast all week, with some days barely getting above freezing, We've not had any snow though. I am resigned to the fact that, since we now live so near the sea, snow seems to be a once a decade occurrence, much to my disappointment.
How about you - are you still coping with winter? Any snow in your neck of the woods? Stay warm this weekend.

Your week looks so lovely and cosy with blankets, hot chocolate and Christmas cake! We've had stunning sunrises here in Oxfordshire too over the last few days, and they really do help cheer up the short days! Laura x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures and I adore the blanket. Perhaps I should not mention I'm off to swim at the beach today (summer in Australia).
ReplyDeleteI must make a note to find some hyacinths in bud in a garden centre - I bought some outdoor ones and they are coming up in their pot outside, but not any indoor ones.
ReplyDeleteThe English countryside can look as stunning in winter as it can in any other season - that is a lovely panorama.
Oh, I wish I'd not seen the photo of the Christmas cake! I was too ill with The Cough to make the almond paste and ice our cake for about the first time ever, so we had it without the trimming and it was just as good. I too love glace cherries and add more than the recipe says!

I wish had some Christmas cake left! I love it!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous yarn, I shall look forward to seeing your shawl. I'm a big fan of hot chocolate, and I love your little mug. We have almost a whole Christmas cake in the freezer (I don't put loads of alcohol in so I froze it when we didn't eat it because of Christmas illness). I shall dig a bit out soon, it will be a nice winter treat. Wishing you and yours a very good weekend. The sun should be shining tomorrow, so hopefully it will be a tad warmer. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteWe're having a snowy winter here, maybe a little more than normal, which I've appreciated a lot. I'm feeling optimistic for good tree flowers and fruit harvests this year; cold, wet winters seem to help a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing your shawl!
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to see all your happy finds Gillian. All our snow is gone and normal winter weather has resumed. The West coast of Scotland doesn't get much snow either but we did get a few nice white days. No amazing sunrises have been spotted either. Your little mug is lovely. I am not one for hot chocolate but I can imagine it would look just as nice with a cappuccino. Have a very nice weekend. x
ReplyDeleteWonderful January moments. I look forward to seeing your shawl. Love the bird! xx
ReplyDeletewe had snow on tuesday morning but rain now, love your pictures. have a great weekendxx
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is so hard to find joy in these cold, blustery days. It has been FREEZING here in Canada ( nearly -30 degrees Celcius with the windchill!) but we have found joy in freshly baked cookies, warm cosy blankets and cuddles on the couch. Soon it will be February- one month closer to the arrival of SPRING!
ReplyDeleteOnly a tiny bit of snow here so far, but it didn't last long. So many Winter things to enjoy in your post. Your blanket looks so cosy on the bed and that yarn is gorgeous; I can't wait to see the finished shawl. Have a good weekend. x
ReplyDeleteOur snow is still all up on top of Mt. Hood and the temps have been so moderate I just posted photos of some of our camellia blossoms...having lived in areas where I had to shovel a lot of snow I am enjoying admiring it on the nearby mountain and knowing I could play in it after just a short drive, but I can appreciate the adjustments you are going through getting used to your new location, and missing the weather from your former location, Gillian. I have just caught up with your posts over the last few weeks and enjoyed all of them and especially seeing your gorgeous blanket and a recap of the process you went through to make it! Bravo! xx
ReplyDeleteI had a new skein of yarn to use this week too, it always feel very special to knit with! Love your beautiful sunrise picture, and I like the idea of it being a winter reward. A consolation prize for it not snowing, perhaps? :-) xx
ReplyDeleteYour yarn looks gorgeous. I always struggle to find a pattern worthy of luxury yarn so it sometimes sits in my stash. What a waste! Enjoy your weekend. X
ReplyDeleteCan you believe I have never had hot chocolate with marshmallows? The sunrise really is breathtaking. This time of year usually means my inky chance to see a sunrise - most days during the year, I get up hours later, at 7.00.
ReplyDeleteNo snow here, either, just grey, wet and cold.
oh that sky. gorgeous x
ReplyDeleteI love your gorgeous crochet blanket, I started a huge granny square one but it has been on the back burner for quite awhile while I have been crocheting other things. Seeing your blanket has made me want to get mine out again and get it finished. Your sunrise photo is stunning and your Christmas cake has made my mouth water.
ReplyDeleteJanuary isn't January without hot chocolate.
ReplyDeleteI think it is the cake that keeps me going, I have polished mine off, I have used a brandy butter icing this year which is yum. Is it wrong to make another, just to get through winter?! Lovely scarf too. Lucy x
ReplyDeleteThink I might just love your blanket.......but don't tell mine! :) xxx
ReplyDeleteI've just started that blanket, I found the book at such a good price it was futile to resist! I adore cherries in cakes too, my very favourite is cherry & almond cake. I was incredibly well behaved not to order any new yarn not sure how long it will last. Have a good week x
ReplyDeleteI am embracing Winter and January is such a beautiful month. We are enjoying snow falling as I type this with 5 inches already on the ground. Thanks to Winter storm IOLA.
ReplyDeleteI would love a recipe for your Christmas cake. It looks delicious!
Have a beautiful day!

ReplyDeleteSuch a cosy week! It's been such a cold week, yarn, cake and hot chocolate sound just perfect!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful week.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
I really like that Hornsea bird. My mother-in-law has the same one and I'm hoping she'll pass it on to us one day. That sunrise is so breathtaking. Wow!.. We've had snow here this week and freezing weather. I'm not a snow person, so I'm glad all the snow's gone today. By the way, I have the same mug too and I also use it a lot for hot chocolates. x
ReplyDeleteYour photos are lovely! I really want to get my photography skills up, I've been learning to use my camera more. Love your pretty blanket!

So glad to see someone embracing winter. I love it but it brings challenges. I love all the pictures. I love your blanket.
ReplyDeleteLike you we still have cake, my husband peels all the marzipan and icing off before eating some and I do wonder why I put it on there in the first place.
ReplyDeleteYour sunrise photo shows really beautiful colours and you've captured it perfectly.
It is bright and sunny here today and quite a bit warmer but the weather lady said by next weekend the temperatures are set to plummet again, so although no snow here so far I'm keeping a watchful eye out!
I would love to see your recipe for the cake....I don't care for too sweet icings or coating and love the idea of more cherries!
ReplyDeleteYou have a great mission!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely sunday<3
What a super sunrise. And your Blanket is looking lovelier each time I see it :-)
ReplyDeleteGillian, it is scary, I have just finished my Christmas cake this week. It turns out only I like it but I always forget that each year when I make a 9" cake to scoff all on my own. I love that little dish too. Jo x
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying these posts you know, so much nicer to have a post focussing on the good side of winter! And see, the month is flying by this way! ;)
ReplyDeleteS x
I'm having major mug envy over here. You know how I feel about crockery, cups in particular. xo
ReplyDeleteLove all those great things you've mentioned. The yarn looks like it will make a very nice shawl. Are you going to show us the pattern? I agree about cherries in cake - yummy. All my Christmas cake was finished what seems like ages ago (a couple of weeks I suppose).
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sunset photo, amazing colours! I love the Hornsea bird, I have never seen one like that before. I collect Hornsea so will keep my eyes open!
ReplyDeleteI am loving winter so much this year. I think, with age, I am beginning to appreciate all the wonderful goodness that each season offers. The sunrise photo is beautiful! And I love the blanket on your bed... it's so pretty and colorful, and looks very warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to see how you can find joy in the big and small things in January. I love the picture of the sky....so beautiful. And that yarn...looking forward to seeing what you make. xxx
