People say that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do. I don't know that I found it especially stressful - thankfully, our moving process seemed fairly straightforward and trouble free compared to some stories I hear - but my word it was exhausting. After spending Christmas with my family, John and I left the kids with my parents and returned to Leeds to finish the packing. We took advantage of every child free moment and saw friends, said goodbyes, and packed like demons. A memorable high point was spending New Year's Eve drinking cocktails with good friends (lifers, I like to think of them) and realising with a jolt that it was 3.15 am and probably time to go home. The hungover packing on New Years Day was a definite low, but we got through it. We also missed Bella and Angus like mad. At around 4 pm each afternoon I would stop whatever it was I was doing and start aimlessly pacing, thinking "I should be doing something!". I am programmed to live by their schedule.
Their absence just added to the strangeness of those last days. The house was much too quiet, but it was right that they weren't there, as they would've been very bored and fed up, and under everyone's feet. So when, on Friday lunchtime, the removal team closed the lorry doors and drove off, I didn't feel particularly sad or sentimental. I just found it all very, very surreal. John and I had one last look around, one last check that everything was locked or switched off, every cupboard emptied. I said a quiet mental Thank You to the house, for looking after us and for all those good years, and then we left. It's another family's home now, and I hope they'll be as happy as we were.

We are staying with my parents for now, until we find somewhere to buy. They very kindly suggested we move in, to save us having to rent. Most of our things are in storage, apart from the essentials like clothes, toys, fabric and yarn. Their house - which is my childhood home - is welcoming, accommodating and flexible, and we are all getting along just fine at the moment. We also have six viewings lined up for this week.
I've been thinking a lot about what I'll miss about Leeds. The people, my friends. Our amazing local school, the five minute walk to shops, doctors and library, the wonderful array of local takeaways and Indian restaurants. Further out I will miss The Dales, the bookshop at Saltaire and a few other random places but nothing I can't fix with a visit back up north. I miss funny odd things about our house like the internal double doors, the bountiful natural light, the feeling of safety, seeing our bits and bobs all over the place. Mainly I miss homemaking. I miss pottering and faffing, doing those little day to day things that make domestic tasks so pleasurable. I miss my stuff.
But this phase is a temporary one. The kids started their new school today and, although it's early days, seemed to take to it with remarkable equanimity. I'm constantly amazed by their ability to adapt, to go with the flow. This has been huge change for them, but they are embracing it. I am excited by all the new places there are for us to visit and discover, all those new things to do, to see, to experience.
Thank you all for your warm wishes and words of encouragement for our move. It really means a lot.
It's never easy to make a big change in your life and moving is one of the biggest. I'm so glad you have somewhere comfortable to stay while you find the next house. Good to hear that the children like their school so far too, I'm sure it will only get better as they settle in. Take care and best wishes, I know that the just-right house is waiting for your family.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that it has all gone so well for you and I hope that the next stage is just as good! I hope that the viewings go well and that you find somewhere you really like and can get the purchase all settled very quickly and then you can get back to homemaking again! Glad the children are so happy! xx
ReplyDeleteSoon, soon, the gentle faffing, prettifying and love you put into your surroundings will give you a new home full of happiness and love x
ReplyDeleteChildren do adapt much more easily than adults. Bet they have new friends already. Hope you find a new home soon.
ReplyDeleteI hope the viewings go well, it's so exciting to be able to put a fresh stamp on a new place x
ReplyDeleteI was going to email this afternoon to see if you'd moved yet and there was a post telling that you had. I do hope all goes well and that you find somewhere lovely to buy and then we can all enjoy the journey of your new home with you. Take care.
ReplyDeleteSo glad it all went smoothly and how lovely to be able to stay with your parents while you house hunt. I also love the fact that yarn was one of your essentials! Have fun with the viewings this week; I can't wait to 'see' your new home. x
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're safe and settled with your parents. Now house viewing - I could do that for a job!
ReplyDeleteOh... I didn't know your move was happening before you having a new place. I thought you'd move straight from your old into the new place and that was why it happened now and not before Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI've never done that, move out without having something else, and I imagine I'd feel very insecure about it. Your old home looked beautiful in every picture, can't blame you for missing your things and the home-making! Good to know your children are doing well at their new school. Yes, that's something we all had as children, that ability to adapt easily. Having a stable background with loving parents (and grandparents, too, in your case) is very helpful there, too.
Hope your viewings go well and you find the perfect home for you all. Didn't realise you were moving away from Leeds!

My dear friend Gillian, I'm so happy for you. I have just made one of the biggest and most difficult moves of my life. After living in a house for 17 years we moved to an apartment last year with our 2 teenagers and built the house we had dream of... Great experience and amazing memories. I have to say that some days I still ask myself why we did it ... I loved our old house and all the familiar things that surrounded it ... But I have to say that seeing our dream materialize has been one great experience. We are still getting familiar with our surroundings and making our house our home.... But I would not change even one second of it. Life is worth living every second fully and you will find the house of your dreams, you will build a home on ot and before you know it will become your space .... Your place. I'm wishing you only the best for 2015 qsnd my your blessings be too many to count. Looking forward to your great posts and updates. Cheers to 2015!
ReplyDeleteI just now enjoyed viewing your 2014 creative reprise from your last post, Gillian, and I am so pleased that you have a comfortable spot to stay in while you shop for a home. I moved three times as a child, 15 times with my husband of 38 years, and once since his death five years ago! Our children did well with our moves when they were young, but my daughters were not thrilled with the moves they made as teens even though they managed to make good memories wherever they lived. I am cheering you on to find the new house that needs to be your happy home :-) xx
ReplyDeleteGood move to stay with your parents. We're renting at the moment and it's almost crippling us financially. Anywhere half decent costs a fortune. I'm pleased your move went well. And I hope you find somewhere perfect for your next home.

I hope your viewings go well and that you find a new house for your family soon. It sounds nice to be living with your parents for a while. x
ReplyDeleteIt's better than staying in a caravan, which is what we did when we first moved to St Ives. It was ok for the first week, but after that I thought I'd go mad. I envy you the viewings. I love looking around houses, and imagining what could be done with the place. Good luck. Hope you find the home of your dreams!

Gulp. I was feeling quite proud of myself for the lack of tears, blown it now!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing you build a beautiful new home when you fiind a house x
What a wonderful rounded emotional post. You seem to have found a balance between saying goodbye and welcoming in a new chapter. i would be worried about my children but I think you have played a trump card and made everything as normal as possible - a sign of great parents I would say. Happy hunting. Jo x
ReplyDeleteI love the way yarn and fabrics are among the essentials along with clothes and toys, I'm with you there!!! Do hope you soon find a beautiful new house to fill with love and laughter to become your new happy house.
ReplyDeleteWishing you all the best for the next bit, looking for a new house! At least you'll be in a really good position of being able to proceed straight away when you find somewhere xx
ReplyDeleteExciting times, you will find the right place Gillian I'm sure :) xxx
ReplyDeleteWell Done Gillian. The fact that people move house all the time doesn't mean that it's not a huge thing to do, packing up years of memories, making decisions about what to take with you and what to do with the rest. Even more so when there are small children's needs to be considered. I am looking forward to seeing what awaits you. x
ReplyDeleteIt's 3 months since we moved from our rental to a more out-of-the-way countryside home. I'm still getting used to the move and finding where my stuff is and the new hiding places my kids keep finding. I love your blog. It's really great and I hope you find a good new place
ReplyDeletegreat to see a new post. I bet your are over the moon the children settled with school so well.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the viewings. we have swapped places, you will be hurtling around the countryside looking at houses instead of me. (Although we are cheekily looking at a house in Woodstock this weekend... shhh dont tell anyone. Its not on the market yet, they saw our card/sign in the countrywide store!)
A door shuts and a new one opens and you will have lots of exciting things to look forward to. You will find the right home soon and it will be perfect because your family will be in it. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteSuch an exciting time for you all, a wonderful new adventure. Thankfully you have the sanctuary of your childhood home which I'm sure is a huge comfort.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear the move went well for you all! I'm sure you will find the perfect house for your new home. Bee xx
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing the packing and moving, and good luck in finding a new home.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for a trouble free move, and how encouraging for you that your children are adapting well. Hope you find a home you love very soon. A lovely time to be building a new home, in Spring, with all its new beginnings X
ReplyDeleteWow, what a start to a new year. I hope that you find a fabulous new home soon and are very happy. We have to sell this year and the whole process fills me with absolute terror - shiver.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! The first part is over and, with being able to stay at your parents' house, you can take your time trying to find your new home. Hopefully it won't take too long and then you can get all your own stuff unpacked and have great fun arranging and re-arranging it!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear the first leg of your move went well. Hope the children have both had great days at their new schools. Good luck with the viewings, you'll know the right one when it comes along, just as the people who live in your old house knew it would be right for their home too.
ReplyDeleteLisa x
So pleased that the first part of your new adventure went well! It sounds like everything went as smoothly as these these things can. I hope the children have enjoyed their first couple of days in their new school and that you find your feet 'down south' very quickly.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year - I hope 2015 is everything you wish for and more! x
I've always enjoyed packing, moving, and setting up a new place haha I don't know why. But, yes, it can get exhausting. It's bittersweet to look at the empty house but you have exciting times ahead. Good luck on the house hunt!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the house hunting that can be exhausting too....are you down south now?

I hope you will soon find a new house !! Well, maybe that is misphrased, I hope you soon find Your new Home... Xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I would be stressed if I was you! I'm also going to miss seeing your old house, which I suppose is a little strange! Glad everything is going well with the children though and change is exciting and I'm sure will offer you lots of fabulous new opportunities. Good luck with the viewings, I hope you find a good one.

Phew, you did it! Well done you, I'm so glad it all went smoothly and that the children are taking well to their new school. I moved one of mine to a different school a few years ago, and I know I worried it about it about forty times more than he ever did. He just walked in the door and got on with it. I'd had sleepless nights and anxiety. Needn't have bothered! How lovely to be staying with your parents, it will be a good interlude for you all I think, and it means you don't have to rush into buying something, you can wait until you find the perfect home. Wishing you much happiness on this new adventure Gillian. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteSo glad it went smoothly, wishing you luck in finding you new home x
ReplyDeleteSo glad everything went well and especially that school is going well. Hope one of the six is THE one. Xxx
ReplyDeleteI moved from one appartment to another in the same town last year and I found it really stressful and annoying! Can't believe how exhausting it must be to do this with two children and all that stuff that accumulates over the years. Good luck on your new home! It's really interesting to follow your move over your blog. I'm curious about how your new house will look!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Austria.

Well done you for taking this in your stride. It's always hard to close what was a happy, settled chapter and move forward into the unknown. But I'm sure the time inbetween spent in the comfort & safety of your lovely childhood home will ease the transition. Happy new house hunting - that's the exciting part, and I'm sure in no time at all you'll be setting up your new happy home. Have you moved south now then?
ReplyDeleteHugs, Gilly xx
So glad the move went well and that the kids seem to be settling in OK.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the viewings and finding a house, I am sure you'll have great fun turning it into your home! xx
Hope you find the right house soon, Gillian (and very much looking forward to seeing the photos!). Glad to hear the kids are taking things in their stride. Thinking of you over here xxx
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear everything's gone well with the move. Good luck for the next part, I hope you find a wonderful family home in which to create your next batch of memories.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear the move had gone smoothly. I think moving in with your parents is the best and most sensible thing to do. And I'm very sure it won't be long before you find the perfect new family home. Good luck! x
ReplyDeleteWishing you all well in this new chapter in your lives! Well done for getting through Christmas and a house move. Had a similar experience some years ago with 2 young children , a camping holiday and staying at mum in laws. Really love your blog, Gillian! Xx
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your stress free move, here's to moving into the new place when it finds you :-D
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the move went well! And it's so nice that you have a cozy and warm place to stay until the right house comes along. I know you will find something wonderful very soon!
ReplyDeleteWe moved lots when I was a child due to my Dad's work - looking back, it was made less traumatic because Mum always made a house a home and we always felt safe and loved wherever we were. I'm sure your children are feeling the same. With every best wish in the house hunting.
ReplyDeleteUntil we moved here we moved every two or three years, three times with an eight month old, only child four actually got to stay in the same house until he was a toddler. I got really used to moving but it was still stressful sometimes, although a lot of that came down to chains which your lovely parents have helped you avoid. But the kids always seemed to sail through. Here's hoping you can soon find just the right house for you all.
ReplyDeleteIt's exciting! Happy New Year Gillian. All the very best with your move and settling into your new life. It will wonderful making your new house a home again. Elaina xo
ReplyDeleteHope house hunting goes well, sounds exciting Lucy
ReplyDeleteI hope you are having a lovely time. Good luck with the house hunting.
ReplyDeleteMoving is not easy and indeed it is exhausting. I wish you the best of luck finding the perfect home.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
When you leave a house you take the love you had there with you; all the happy times are still yours. Good luck with the new!
ReplyDeleteI am way behind on blog reading but it was great to catch up with this final entry in this phase of your life. I have lived in13 houses and each move has been an adventure. When I was a child we move three times and although it was sometimes a bit scary when I look back as an adult I can see how good each of those moves was for us all. I am so looking forward to hearing of your next adventure xx
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the house hunt. I hope you find something soon! I should be packing right now but blog reading is more fun :-D x
