Some months ago I watched my friend Rachel work on a v-stitch crocheted blanket and completely fell in love with the repeating zigzag pattern. It's easier than a ripple or chevron design, without any need for counting, but so effective and pleasing to the eye. Rachel referred me to the lovely (and new to me) blog Le Monde De Sucrette and Angie's pattern for her v-stitch design. I didn't want to make a blanket, but I did have a bag of scraps and half balls of cashmerino yarn, and a yearning to make something cosy and mindlessly enjoyable over the Christmas period, and I thought it might be a good basis for a scarf.
Cashmerino is a yarn I like to use very much as it's soft, easy to work with, washes well, and comes in a good selection of colours. My stash looked like this:
I added more green, yellow and white, to balance it out a bit. Funny how all stash-busting projects seem to involve buying more yarn...
I decided to separate each row of colour with a row of white (partly to stretch my leftovers as far as possible) and I really like how this came out. It looks fresh and crisp. Although, I have to be honest, darning in the ends took as long as crocheting a row.
I made it long, long enough to wrap all the way round my neck once then still knot loosely underneath. I kept thinking it was nearly there, but no...a bit further.
The colours are supposed to look random but, let's not kid ourselves, you all know I worked out how much I had left of each colour and wrote out a chart.
And then the question of whether to add a fringe or not. People suggested pompoms, but I didn't have enough yarn. I tried an all white fringe but thought it looked a bit boring.
In the end I decided on a multicoloured fringe, using the six colours I had left with white between each, just like the scarf. I kept it short and neat and have to say I love how it came out. It is just fringe-y enough without being too long.
It measures 94 cm or 37 inches long and 21 cm or 8 inches wide and kept my neck warm all day today.
I don't have a name for it. I am rubbish at naming things I make and can't think of anything beyond "my V stitch scarf". But I like how the colours have a bit of winter and spring in them, a sort of crossing over of the seasons. A reminder that spring is coming.
I really love how this came out, Gillian. The white sets off the colors so nicely. The short, colorful fringe was a great idea. It looks more sophisticated this way (what do I know, ha). Really well done.
ReplyDeleteIt's really lovely Gillian. The multi coloured fringe is perfect. Bee xx
ReplyDeleteLovely scarf, very pretty and the fringe is perfect.
ReplyDeleteyour scarf is so good, i must learn this stich its really nice x
ReplyDeleteI love this! I typically prefer knitting over crochet, but I think I'm going to have to give this a try...
ReplyDeleteSo lovely :-) The V-stitch is fun.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous scarf Gillian. The multicoloured fringe fishes it of beautifully. I've seen a few projects with v stitch and really like that look. I'm off to google how to do it :)
ReplyDeleteAfter reading some of the other comments, I just have to say the same thing, I just love your scarf. I'm checking into the pattern. this will be on my list of things to make one day. thank you
ReplyDeleteLove that pattern and it looks so nice and snug for cold, windy days!
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely, and the way you describe the cashmerino yarn, it sounds as if this could be just the thing for me - so often, my mother or sister make a scarf for me, and I absolutely love the way it looks, but can't wear it directly on my skin because I find it scratchy after a while, and get rashes on my neck.
ReplyDeleteIt's so...fresh! ;-) Love it, very well done. Especially the fringe.
ReplyDeleteI am currently using cashmerino for the the first time on a scarf for me...it is so soft, love it! As do I love your scarf..... I'm off to have a look at the V stitch instruction to see if something that I could do with my very limited skills! I did chuckle at your 'randon' stripes, I agree random is so very hard! Have a good week, Sarah xo
ReplyDeleteI love it and again I'm always so impressed at everything you do ... So pretty, so elegant and impeccably well done. I love the "random" colors... They end up perfectly placed ;) have a great week my dear friend.
ReplyDeleteI love it! You certainly have an eye for colour.
ReplyDeleteI love your scarf, I haven't seen the v stitch more but it is very effective. I can just imagine all those ends to sew in! The fringe is just perfect, I bet that is non random too!
ReplyDeleteCaz xx
I love it, great pattern for a scarf, beautiful from both sides!
ReplyDeleteIts gorgeous! I think it was a great idea to separate each colour with white. Thanks for the warning re ends- I've been hankering after trying out a V stitch scarf for a while but will maybe do larger blocks of colour so would have fewer ends to sew in. The one-row stripes look so good though!
ReplyDeleteI have this heart-warming mental image of you sitting, chewing a pen, and working on your colour chart. You're so lovely. I absolutely LOVE your scarf. It's perfection. xx PS. Not-so-random scarf? Contrived chaos scarf?

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful scarf Gillian! I would happily call it my own. I love Le Monde de Sucrette and have bookmarked her V-stitch blanket ages ago, in the hope I'll find time to use the pattern. x
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful... And I very tempted to try one. But as you point out, it would require the purchase of more yet to use up what I have left!
ReplyDeleteReally pretty! I love the alternating white stripes. Makes the scarf look really light and bright and reminds me of spring! :)
ReplyDeleteYour scarf is so beautiful and I'm sure is very cosy. I like the fringe - not too long. Funny, I was just thinking the other day how trying to use up the yarn stash normally involves buying more! I'm making a blanket from some of my leftovers (some of them quite a substantional amount the ball) and am hoping I won't have to buy any more - except maybe for the border. You could call your scarf 'Promise of Spring'.
ReplyDeleteA really lovely scarf, Gillian. I am part way through a V stitch blanket, but I am dreading sewing in those ends! I really should tackle them as I go along, but have no discipline! Enjoy wearing your scarf again today - it's pretty chilly out there. x
ReplyDeleteI love Sucrette's blog, and have been following it for years.... One of the first crochet things I made was a pair of ponchos for my girls in Cath Kidston colours following one of her patterns and they were a great success.... I aDoRe your scarf, the mix with white works really well and it is a great project for using scraps.... I may have to add this to my "to do list".... So many projects, so little time.... ( sigh...), hope you are enjoying your week, Pati xx
ReplyDeleteLove that scarf!
ReplyDeleteYour scarf looks great, bright and cheerful and I really like Sucrettes blog, one to follow I think, thank you!
ReplyDeleteIt's really gorgeous Gillian. I love the v stitch pattern too and it's great for a scarf. Adding the white ( looks like cream on my monitor) is a great idea and it gives definition to the pattern which might not have been as eye catching with just a mixture of colours.
ReplyDeleteJacquie x
Very, very nice. Not sure that I've ever done a V-stich, but maybe I'll look out for that. Also love the fringe. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThe coloured fringing is the perfect ending to the scarf. I like the dark colours here and there it balances it all out. Here's to many long walk with the new scarf.

Hey Gillian,
ReplyDeleteGorgeous as always. I chuckled a little at your admission of the chart :)
Leanne xx
I love the idea of multi coloured fringe.
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful!
Miss
Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGillian, perfecto! :) xxx
ReplyDeleteIt is really cute and fun Gillian - and it will go with everything! A good scarf to brighten up your Winter days.
ReplyDeleteI do like your scarf, you've made a wonderful item of clothing out of your scraps.
ReplyDeleteI love it! I had voted for pom-poms on IG...but it looks wonderful just the way it is. I knew it would! xx
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful Gillian!! I don't suppose that you know the colours that you used do you? I am trying to get an idea of what different shades look like together for a blanket that I would like to make in this yarn - if I can afford it that is! Thanks in anticipation! I hope that you really enjoy wearing it and being all snuggly! xx
ReplyDeleteHi Amy. Gosh, I'm really sorry I took so long to answer your question - I thought I had ages ago. Perhaps I just answered it in my head! I'm afraid I don't know what colours I used, as almost all the balls were without labels and some were two or three years old and are now discontinued. And I've since chucked out the labels from the new balls I bought. I find the colours for Debbie Bliss cashmerino seem to turn over quite quickly and what was available one year ago isn't necessarily available now. But I did use about 16 colours. Sorry I can't be more help - good luck with your blanket. xx
DeleteIt's gorgeous Gillian, you have such a good eye for design. And yes, you're right, stash busting things always require the purchase of more yarn. I imagine it suits you very well. I shall think of it as your January scarf, just right for these cold winter days, although it's probably not as cold as it would have been where you lived before. Maybe they have snow there? CJ xx
ReplyDeleteThat is really lovely. Great colours and beautifully finished. I really like the fringe, maths multi colours are just right X
ReplyDeleteWow, that is a beautiful scarf. I love Debbie Bliss yarns and that particular one is my favorite, it is so soft and yummy.
ReplyDeleteWell done,
Meredith
Love and adore this so much! I've been so tempted to make a V stitch something for quite a while and this really, really makes me want to even more. I love the white stripes between too, that really makes the colours pop doesn't it? I really wish I'd though of the V stitch when I sat down having my 'what shall I make day' at the weekend!
ReplyDeleteS x
That is gorgeous. I can imagine it working well for a man with darker colours! Another thing to add to my to do list. Maybe some Christmas presents! X
ReplyDeleteYou know Gillian that makes me want to make things properly with love and time and effort. It is absolutely fantastic but then you know I like a bit of stash busting! Jo x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I really love that stitch and the multi-coloured fringe is the perfect finishing touch. Stripes are my favourite pattern :) x
ReplyDeleteI like that v stitch and it works well with the white rows in between the colours. Nicely done Gillian! xx
ReplyDeleteI've just this week finished a granny stripe scarf but I am soooo tempted by yours; it's gorgeous and just right for all this chilly weather. x
ReplyDeleteIt's really striking ... lovely job :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteJanet
I love this scarf Gillian. The colours look lovely together and we are having just the weather to wrap yourself up in a cozy scarf.
ReplyDeleteIt's really lovely. And a really great way to use up scraps of yarn. Love it! x
ReplyDeleteOh I love this! It's gorgeous. I'm so tempted by the v stitch...
ReplyDeleteMarianne x
It's great and it really looks random even if you say it's not :-) The fringe you went for definitely works the best, it's just lovely :-)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Really lovely colours.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scarf!
ReplyDeleteI love it. You know how I stole your cowl idea, well I still have cashmero left, so ....... Xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm in awe, once again, with your creativity Gillian. It's such a beautiful scarf. i hope you have much pleasure wearing and using it :) xx
