Back in the final days of December, in the midst of the move, I decided to find a strategy to get me through January. I do not usually enjoy this month and so in the interests of good mental health and a more positive attitude to winter, I resolved to try to embrace January and all it's associated wintryness. Every day I find one good thing to notice and celebrate. Finding good things is easy if you're looking for them. If I have my big camera, I take a photo on that. If not, I always have my phone on me. And this blog gives me somewhere to record and share my finds.
So, here are my daily doses of January goodness, from the first seven days of the month.
1/31: Eating my cranberry chutney with some post-Christmas Camembert and crusty bread, and feeling thankful for fridges full of good food that linger into the new year.
2/31: A beautiful winter's sunrise and dry weather for moving day.
3/31: After the rain, seeing blue sky and trees reflected in the puddles.
4/31: A long, cosy, delicious lunch with my friend Abigail and her family on Sunday in Horsham. It was a bitterly cold and foggy day and we stayed inside for as long as the children would let us. I also rather liked these building facades. Horsham is very pretty.
5/31: Porridge for breakfast on a chilly, grey morning, with demerara sugar and sultanas. (This prompted a fun exchange of favourite porridge toppings on instagram. I'll list them at the bottom - there are some inspiring and delicious ideas in there.)
7/31: Working the final rows on my crocheted blanket provided not only warmth but also much needed colour on the greyest of days.
What are your strategies for coping with January, or do you enjoy this month? I'm discovering that there's a lot to love about the slower winter months if you look closely enough.
Thanks for all your good wishes for the house hunting. We've looked at eight properties this week and are going back for a second viewing on one tomorrow which looks promising. Nosing round people's houses is fascinating! My main observations so far are that people are messy, and that if you have two cats and two dogs and a guinea pig in the living room, your house will smell of animals.

Ideas for toppings on porridge/oatmeal:
- Honey with sultanas/wheatbran/banana.
- Maple syrup and dates.
- Banana and coconut.
- Golden syrup with banana/sultanas/blueberries.
- Grated apple and Greek yogurt.
- Stewed or sliced apple and demerara sugar.
- Pears with a dusting of cinnamon.
- Peanut butter and sliced banana.
- A spoonful of mincemeat - a very Christmassy topping.
- Homemade blueberry syrup.
- Maple syrup with cinnamon and cream. Decadent!
Something sweet combined with something fruity seems to be the theme here. Someone also suggested grating apple and pear into the pan and cooking it with the porridge. My mum does the same with dried apricots, cranberries and other fruits in her porridge, so that they swell up as they absorb water during the cooking process. But if I had to choose one topping above all others, a generous spoonful of golden syrup would always be first. Happy porridge eating!
Good luck with the house hunting. I remember cleaning the skirting boards before people came to view our house (and many other cleaning rituals), then when going to view other people's houses I was always shocked at the mess. Washing drying on radiators, dirty plates in the sink, pet mess on paving around the house, the list goes on. Sarah
ReplyDeleteGolden syrup is also one of my husbands favourite porridge toppings. He also likes what he calls Canadian Porridge, topped with Pecans - not Canadian! - and Maple Syrup - the Canadian bit! I haven't had porridge for years, but I remember liking it with a little salty taste and then lots of milk - cold - and a sprinkle of brown sugar. I am glad that the house hunting is going well, and I hope that the second viewing is good. I think that all of those pets in one room is too much for the pets, never mind the people! Poor animals. Glad you are having good times and finding good things each day. The days are already getting lighter so January will be at an end before you know it, but you will have 31 positive things to look back on! xx
ReplyDeleteIt looks like January is off to a bright start for you. I love the puddle picture, it's beautiful. Via Instagram I saw some photos of the River Thames right in the centre of London on the same day - it was also extremely still and mirror-like.
ReplyDeleteI like the colder months and the idea of cosying away. It usually doesn't happen like that and I end up rushing around madly as usual but I think now that I've been ill and will need plenty of resting time at home to ensure I continue to recover when I head back to work, I'll have to take weekends more calmly. One of the things I like best and that I've enjoyed all this week is the feeling of it getting twilight and then dark when I'm sat on the settee. All of a sudden it's dark outside, the street lights have come on and it's time to turn the heating up and light a few candles. Simple pleasures!
Oh, and my favourite porridge topping - I buy up the fresh cranberry packs on sale immediately after Christmas freeze them and as I need them make a compote with oranges, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and a dash of cherry brandy. A jolly way to start the day! x
I don't eat porrige(cream of wheat here in the states) so I can't help you there. I tend to eat cheesy grits( it's a southern thing). As far as January goes I just grin and bear it. I drink lots of tea and dream of the sand and sun :)

yep, golden syrup is the topping of choice here for porridge! A great idea to find something good in everyday - it's very easy really isn't it? Getting outside in the fresh air is the biggest tonic for me anytime of the year but particularly in winter. Hope the house hunting goes well!

ReplyDeleteI actually love the process of house-hunting, but you're so right - we've viewed so many houses where they really haven't even bothered to tidy up, much less fill the rooms with fresh flowers and percolating coffee!
Oh, and chocolate chips on porridge is usually my treat du jour ;-) Some may turn up their noses, but once you've tried it, there's no looking back....

ReplyDeleteI used to hate winters in general and then I realised I was wishing half my years away so I changed my thought processes and like you I have found lots to be thankful for. Working on cosy crochet blankets is one of the highlights x love porridge too x

ReplyDeleteI have never been a fan of January, so, I try and find a positive thing everyday. My porridge topping is homemade granola, a spoon of plain yoghurt and maple syrup.....back to childhood would be sugar and milk!! Love the crochet xx
ReplyDeleteI love January. This is a really good time of year for me. I feel more motivated than usual. I'm assuming porridge is the same as oatmeal, but I really don't know...in any case, I eat my oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins or dried cranberries and sometimes chopped nuts. Good luck with the house hunt, it's something I enjoyed a lot myself.

ReplyDeleteI like my fruit all soaked and plumped up too. I'm surprised about the messy houses, I tidied mine to within an inch of its life before every viewing, maybe I needn't have bothered! No piggies in the living room either. I really love January as well as Jennifer, I think maybe because it's a rest from all the gardening and allotmenting. Winter walks, scurrying home at sunset to a warm house, lamps lit at twilight, candles and hot drinks. Curling up with books and creative things. All the darkness that makes the amazing winter light seem so precious. A little light hibernation. Oh it's blissful. The wilder the weather, the happier I am, although those glorious sunny days are good too. Wishing you a good weekend. CJ xx

My daughter lives her porridge and makes it in the thermomix every morning (she is now 10) and she loves a little rapadura sugar. I'm going to suggest cinnamon this morning. I'm not a fan of January here in Australia also. Mostly because it can get sooooo hot. When we were without children it was fine. But I can't take the kids to the beach on 40+ degree days - probably similar to you. Maybe too cold to go outside and too hot here?
ReplyDeleteI like my porridge cooked with salt and water and topped with a dash of cream and a spoonful of golden syrup. I prefer pinhead oatmeal over any other kind of oats for this. I am glad you embracing January, it is a difficult month for many. I quite like it, it is slow and although wet and miserable, I love the sound of the howling winds down the chimney on a stormy January night. My husband is roasting chestnuts on the (gas)fire as I type! Perfect. I am quite paranoid about our dog's smell. I would be mortified if visitors would wrinkle their noses in my living room! I dry Jack very carefully after a walk outside because it is the wet dogs that smell most. I frequently wash his blankets, too. ReplyDeleteGlad you are feeling positive. For the record I like my porridge (made with water) made very thick, with a drizzle of golden syrup, and some fruit, often berries, which I pop in the microwave until the juices run a little. Cold milk. Yum, could eat a bowl of it right now! X

Good luck with that second viewing - my most enduring memory of house hunting is one house which smelled so strongly of dog that it made your eyes water; I'm convinced that you would have had to take the plaster off the walls to get rid of it! Each time we've house hunted, I've found it astounding the state of some people's houses. But if it's the right house in the right location, then you need to be able to look past all that. But it also depends on how much work you're willing to do to a place? Re: porridge - it has to be a sprinkling of Demerara sugar and a dash of milk to make a porridge "island"! xx
ReplyDeleteJanuary is not much different from other months for me, there is always a lot in my diary to look forward to: Three birthdays, a concert, pub quizzes, visits to exhibitions, and the "small stuff" at home that is equally good - such as putting away the Christmas decoration (not that I've put up much) and having my beloved empty shiny surfaces again :-)

ReplyDeleteI used to make a very decadent porridge with full fat milk, cream, brown sugar & syrup. Purists would cry but it was divine. Oh no smelly pets, since inheriting my dog I've spent a fortune on scented candles! Hope you find lots more positives for this month! x

ReplyDeleteI was just reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears to my little babe and wondered, "Who would want to eat porridge?" I guess a lot of people! It is just an odd sounding word, though I guess it is just like our oatmeal - which I like with maple syrup, cinnamon, and dried cranberries.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I find the month of January very refreshing! I assume porridge is what we call oatmeal. I eat oatmeal almost every morning with a splash of almond milk, cinnamon and raisins. Charlotte enjoys her oatmeal with milk and brown sugar. It's a favorite in our house!

I have an account but just can't get a grip on it! I'm ok with January as I always start the year being organised. It doesn't always last long, but at the start of the year I try my hardest to get the Calendar right with all the rugby games, appointments and birthdays listed. Then I sometimes do things like chuck out all the out of date stuff in the cupboards - gelatine sheets from 2008 (yes, they can go) unopened jam from 2012 - might still be ok (that can stay). I sleep a lot and don't get too hung up about it and I light a lot of candles.

ReplyDeleteI love porridge especially with golden syrup. But I don't even keep syrup in the house now for fear of me eating it all. Instead I put our gorgeous honey (made by oue own bees) on my porridge with a spoonful of mixed seeds. I'm happy enough getting through January. There's always something good about every month and season of the year.
