Big Hills and Big Skies

Yesterday we spent the day in the Yorkshire Dales with a group of friends who were camping near Appletreewick. The campsite is nestled in a picture-postcard spot right on the river Wharfe and as well as staying in your own tent, you can hire a bell tent or an old Airstream should you fancy. I think this is what's known as "glamping" and probably the closest I'll come to camping.

Our friends - six families in all - had set up a brilliant little camp with a communal kitchen area under a gazebo and lots of seating, and when we arrived a barbecue was going and beers were being opened, always a nice sight to be greeted with. Another family came along for the day too and altogether there were 13 adults and 14 children. I think. It was lovely, everyone was extremely relaxed. I hardly saw Bella and Angus the whole time we were in the campsite, they were so busy running around and playing and generally occupying themselves.

After a huge lunch I took Bella and Angus for what I though would be "a little walk up a hill" near the campsite. Some other friends came too and there was a little party of us setting out on this trek. And it was a trek, because as we got going it became apparent that the hill was rather steep.

It took Angus all of five minutes to find and slip in the nearest pile of sheep poo and he managed to get it all over my jeans. In fact, what with the sheep poo, cow pats, rabbit holes (just perfect for twisting ankles) and thistles it was a bit of an obstacle course, but of the most charming kind.

Angus did not enjoy this climb. Oh no, he did not. While Bella, surefooted and energetic, scampered to the top with her friend Phoebe, I half dragged/half carried Angus to the top. I bribed, I cajoled. I promised sweets. He whined and protested. He confuses the worlds "steep" and "heavy" and as we climbed he kept saying "Mummy, the hill's too heavy", over and over again. We waved at Daddy in the campsite below. I cursed John under my breath as I imagined him sat in one of those really comfortable camping chairs with a beer in his hand.

But the views from the top. Oh, the views.

Dry stone walls and big, big skies.

Not to mention the sheep.

The sun started to burn through the cloud cover and blue skies emerged.

I absolutely love the Yorkshire Dales, I really do.

The walk down was easier, just. Still very steep though. Bella ran on ahead and made me nervous with her fearlessness.

Angus stayed closer.

Angus said that we'd climbed a mountain and I felt like I had too, city girl that I am. But it was worth it.

Today was spent pottering...baking, a quick supermarket trip, some crochet, taking the kids to the park on their bikes...eating. Lots of eating. The best kind of Sunday, the ones where you are quietly productive but in a relaxed way. Happy-making.

  2. I love the dales too, not that I've seen much of them, but they're very homely to me as many parts are similar to the peak district. I've driven through Appletreewick but never stopped there. Hills, sheep poo and thistles - sounds like my kind of day out :) Lovely photos and lovely to see Bella enjoying the freedom, shame Angus wasn't so convinced!

  5. I used to live in Yorkshire and yes, it can be quite hilly! But amazing skies, I miss seeing those now I live further south.

  7. Sounds a lovely weekend, think I might have skipped the steep climb but then again the views were magnificent. Hope you have a good week ahead x

  8. I remember very clearly taking Alfie for a similar walk a few years ago. Alfie would happily be pushed around in a buggy even now. He is that lazy, so it was a big mistake on my part! Your hill climb with the children reminded me of that!!

  11. Looks like you had a grand day. That cup of tea looks like a well deserved treat! Its never easy combining hill climbs and little ones I find...unless there's a giant slide to take you all the way back down -fast-, then the climb never seems to be an issue with my two! ... Unfortunately there aren't m(any) of those lurking in the dales (or we'd all be at it!) have a good week x

  14. How fun! I have always wanted to camp in one of those airstreams. Also, your story reminded me of the countless number of times my first son and I had to wheedle son #2 to keep at it while we hiked. Phew!

  15. It's beautiful there. Well worth the trek with an obstreperous little boy to get photos like that. Mine are good hikers but then they kind of have to be living around here.

  17. Wow, what beautiful photos! That is truly gorgeous countryside there - exactly how I imagine the Yorkshire Dales to be. And that sheep with the black patch on his face had me in hysterics - he is a lot more interesting than our sheep!!! Mel x

  21. What a lovely spot and view! Totally worth the climb up the 'heavy' hill, I reckon.

  22. I love that area! The walk up the hill sounds so familiar...thistles, sheep poo and a ridiculously steep hill? I love the views and I like coming down, but climbing up - not so much. Again - lovely looking macaroons!

  23. Beautiful! We did a camping week end last September, in a yurt, with some friends too. I wouldn't call it glamping as the sleeping really wasn't that comfortable but the hills, the views, the barbecues, the beers, the guitar and marshmallows around the campfire were just lovely, the kids loved it!!
I've never been in that part of the country but you're making me want to go! What a lovely week-end you've had!

  24. Its fair to say I set off for the Dales in a bit of a grump but as the road narrowed and twisted and the landscape opened before us P said 'The hills make me so happy'. They do indeed.

    Those coconut macaroons look amazing.

  25. Lovely! Sheep and rabbit holes! Sounds like a fairy tale to me. ;-)
The image with the sheep is a postcard!
Thanks for sharing, you've got such beautiful places around you.

  26. It looks like the perfect compromise to camping if that's not your thing, and I have to say it most certainly looks more like glamping. I've got this firmly in my memory banks for when health improves, so thank uou for the link. The Yorkshire dales are so picturesque and that spot looked idyllic. I can just imagine that the majority of little legs would've struggled with that hill, so well done for getting little Angus there, definitely looked worth it in the end. Thanks for sharing beautiful pics of what looked to be a glorious day with us. Your Sunday looked equally enjoyable, macaroons and crochet, life is good!! Xo

  28. Looks like you had a fab weekend. I find that often one of the boys had a good moan about doing something, but once we get started it is fine. We call it failure to transition!

  31. I absolutely love the Yorkshire Dales. We had lots of day trips to Appletreewick when I was a child, and it's been an outing which I've carried on with my own children. That walk looked a bit energetic for little legs.

  33. I have not had the good fortune of visiting the Dales yet Gillian, thanks for sharing these beautiful photos. I think i might of been a bit like Angus climbing that steep incline :o) We camp every year and Alice has always adored it, finding new friends and having a ball. At almost 13 she is hoping to have a friend to camp with us now. Love pootling around on sunny Sundays too, are you making bunting for Lucy and her yarndale or to create more pops of colours in your home? X Happy week ahead x Penny

    1. Yes, it's for Yarndale. But I'm really enjoying making those little triangles and I'm sure some crochet bunting will sneak it's way into my home soon, much to my poor husband's horror... x

  43. I left Yorkshire 7 years ago to emigrate to Australia. I have not been back since, but looking at your photographs brings back very fond memories of walking in the Dales.
    Thank you.

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
