We saw a joint of beef in the shops this morning, half price. John, whose day off it was today, said "Shall we have a roast tonight?" I said "Err, ok then." And so we did.
John cooked the whole thing. He is never happier on his day off than when he's pottering in the kitchen. And I do love to see a man in an apron. The meal was a triumph. The meat was rare and tender, the potatoes were crispy, he made proper gravy from scratch, the Yorkshire Puddings rose so much they burst out of their tins.
He'll be working all through this weekend so it was nice to be able to do this today. It elevated a cold, grey, slushy, mid-week afternoon into something special.

What a great idea ... any day can be a roast day :) ... the creamed rice pudding can also be baked at a low heat ... my granny always baked hers in the oven but my mum made ours like this on the stovetop ... she used to add raisins as it cooked ... the timing can be different depending on the cooker ... but 20 mins usually cooks it well ... hope you enjoy it ... There is something so decedent about a midweek roast. We love them
ReplyDeleteYum, you can't beat roast beef and Yorkshire puds. We often have roasts mid week because we rarely have them on a Sunday. I think it stems from me working every Sunday for fourteen years. Now that I no longer work, I like to do other things on a Sunday than cook.
ReplyDeleteOhhh that looks good. I miss Sunday lunch in our favourite London pub. Now we are back in NZ we do try and recreate this at home. Lovely to have found your blog.

ReplyDeleteA mid-week roast is definitely the best motivational tool to get you through to the weekend. Mr P has started regularly going to the supermarket on a Thursday night and stalking the staff to get the second reductions that always happen between 5.30-6pm. We've had some amazing pieces of meat (beef, pork, pheasant) reduced from around the £10 mark down to about £3. Brilliant! We've had some great meals and loads of meat for lunchtime sarnies!

Goodness all this snow and snowmen and sledding looks fabulous! I haven't been over to comment as this last week of 6 weeks of school holidays have just about swallowed me whole and spat me out!
