Elving

We've been a busy house recently, elving away, making and baking and scurrying around in a mouse-like fashion. Experience has taught me that if I want to have a reasonably peaceful and stress free Christmas, and really relax into those last few moments before the big day, then I have to put the hours in now. I can't be one of those people who wrap their gifts on Christmas Eve, I just can't. I want to be enjoying a glass of something sparkly while watching Carols at Kings, not running around panicking because I've run out of sellotape.

Gifts are being furiously made. I have just discovered Downton Abbey (why did I never watch this before?? It's wonderful!) and watched the first three episodes in a row last night snuggled under a blanket, happily crocheting away.

Cards have been written and are piled up ready to post. Is it me or are stamps really expensive now?

Gifts for my god-daughter and her new baby sister were finished, packed up and taken to the post office.

A little present wrapping is taking place here and there.

I gave my cake it's marzipan layer. I don't really know why I do this as I detest marzipan and fondant icing, and always peel it from my cake and just eat the plain cake underneath (with crumbly, mature cheese - it's a Yorkshire thing) but I like the look of the iced cake, and I like traditions, so the cake is iced.

And we've made some pretty little tea-light holders, just jam jars covered in lace. I'll post more on these in a couple of days.

The gingerbread house is just about holding up. The door had to be mended when a friend of Angus's refused to believe that the door did not open and pulled and pulled at it. The paper trees are trashed. It is currently being invaded by a group of curious animals. I fear it may only last one Christmas at this rate...

How about you? Are you feeling festive? Organised or panicked? Tired? Excited? All of the above? What elving is afoot in your home?

  1. Your gifts all look so lovely :) I'm crocheting something right now, hope I can get it finished in time! I feel quite festive now but unfortunately my surroundings don't, the big draw back of living with parents still! If I had my own place it would be a winter wonderland by now! Maybe next year :) x

  3. Beautiful pics and I adore your lace tea-light holders. You know it's nearly Christmas when there are piles of written cards sitting waiting to be post. I'm off to a German market in a mo and will have to catch up with Christmas preparations later xo

  6. Dear Gillian
Wow, you have been incredibly busy. I have only written two cards so far and my second lot of bunting needs finishing and I still have presents to buy and make, but no doubt it will all get done in the end. Lovely photos.
    Best wishes

  8. Feeling jolly frazzled here, but it has little to do with Christmas, just one of those curve balls life throws you from time to time!

I'm with you on the Christmas Eve thing ... I like to have everything done before I sit down to watch Carols from Kings ... those first few notes of Once in Royal David's City, that's when the holiday truly begins. I'll be drinking Bailey's on ice, it's a tradition!

  13. Lots of wrapping going on here....and yes, I too have the cosy evening planned for my wrapping which turns into me willing it to end and not bothering with much ribbon. You can definitely tell which ones were wrapped first! Xx

  14. Looks like you have been so busy. I love this build up to Christmas. Somehow staying up late to finish little jobs doesn't seem like such hard work when it's Christmas and there's some festive music in the background or something good on tv. I love the baby vest and t-shirt - so pretty. Please share how you made the tea light jars. Might be something I can actually make. xxx

  17. I'm one of those last minute people who wraps everything on Christmas Eve. I was planning on being a bit more organised this year, but I've had a chest infection all week and it still isn't budging, so I haven't even written my cards yet. Looks like I'll be at the last minute again.

  18. Hello Gillian,
Firstly happy you found 'Downton'!! - The Grandmother has a lot of useful one-liners (LOL). It all looks so wonderfully festive and beautiful at yours. I am like you, get the work done and enjoy the rest! Hope you had a fun weekend.

  19. Yay for Downton Abbey! It's fabulously addictive.

You are far more organized than I am. I'm already starting to feel behind with festivities/gifts. I've decided to bag Christmas cards all together which seems sad but honestly I'm just not feeling it. So many of my gifts have to be shipped (family across the country) that I can't handle any additional treks to the post office.

*sigh* And meanwhile, you're doing so many fun and wonderfully festive things there with your children. Way to go girl!

  21. I've not heard the term 'elving' before but I like it! I think I'm a mix of all the terms at the moment. Decorations are up, most of my cards are written and I only have one present to buy - I guess that makes me more organised than I feel. Love the snowflake punch on the gift tags by the way. x

  24. The shopping elves have been busy but the crafting and baking ones less so. Hope to rectify that this week with stockings, a nativity and 2 crochet scarves - maybe with some Downton in the bakcground!

  27. Stop, stop, stop! I'm being left way behind. I'm still living in October. Presents, cards, trees... that's what Christmas Eve is for isn't it?
I dream of being organised and having everything done before Christmas. In reality I post my cards on Christmas Eve, stay up all night cooking and hope the Spar is open for presents (only joking on the last one).
    Love that balloon t-shirt.
