A House

We have a house! Oh yes! It's not a home (yet) but it's a start and we are over the moon.

It all happened very quickly in the end because we were "proceedable" (a word I loathe but estate agents like to use very much - everything is all about how proceedable you are or are not.) I remember saying before that I didn't find moving house stressful. Well, selling our house was not stressful. It was tiring, hectic and at times emotional, but buying a house...oh, yes that is different, because when you're buying a house you want it. There's a lot at stake. You imagine yourself and your family living in that house and you start to make emotional links to it even though you know you mustn't, because it could all fall through.

Our house (and I love that we can now refer to it as that, rather than starting all sentences with "If we get the house...") has been vacant for the last six months. The vendors, an asset management company, refused to take it off the market even after they accepted our offer and insisted we exchange and complete on the same day, two weeks later. I was terrified we'd be outbid at the last moment but thankfully we were not, and with the help of our (brilliant) solicitor we were able to move quickly. It worked to our benefit that we had no chain. Of course, although it was all quite stressful, we'd never have been able to afford to this house under other circumstances.

We picked up the keys last week and are at the stage now of having the electrics, boiler and plumbing checked and making lists of things we'd like to do before we move in. The house is currently furnished with camping chairs and a kettle. I've got a whole new notebook (with a Liberty print pattern on the cover) just dedicated to lists for this house. You know I love a list.

The house was built in 1968. I always liked a period house, but I didn't expect to live in one from this era. It has a ski chalet look about and and lots of quirky original features which - luckily - we absolutely love. And big rooms and huge windows (the tape measure was too short to measure the lounge window to our surprise and amusement) and a good size garden and it's on a really nice, quiet street.... We live in the suburbs now and I like it.

Work so far has been limited to this:

Thank you for letting me waffle on about it here. It's so good to be able to share it all with you! It will be some weeks before we actually move in, but I will be wittering on about paint colours and what-not here for some time.

It's so exciting!!!

  8. Your new house is exactly as "old" as I am, so I can confirm that 1968 was a good year :-)
I like what I see so far. Plenty of light and space. Strange that the sellers would not take it off the market and insisted on rushing everything - I hope that does not mean something is not quite right there.
It really is exciting, and I am looking forward to seeing through your blog how this house turns into a home!

  11. Huge congrats to you, such exciting news. My sister bought her flat this way and I remember the stress she had {and we felt on her behalf!}.
    Love the balcony, how unusual.
Your new home is as old as me, built in the year I was born, I could do with some sprucing up too!

  31. Soooooo exciting Gillian - it makes all the stressful bit worth it doesn't it when this fun bit starts - you just can't beat that high. We lived in a 1960's house before our current one and it was so perfect for a busy family - it totally worked room wise and I just fell in love with a house that was so light and bright. We waited for a year for the house we are in now - so worth it when you know its what you want for your family. Really looking forward to lots and lots of homey photo's, Kate xx

  37. Oh that is one beautiful home. Moving house is the most stressful experience I have ever been though. We too had to complete and exchange on the same day! I can see lots of happy years in that home

  43. Hooray and congratulations! The period between making an offer and completing must be one of the nerve wracking times; heart breaking when you lose what you've come to think of as your new dream home; thank goodness you had a happy outcome. . Your new house looks wonderful and I think your style and the house will complement each other beautifully. I can't wait to see the changes unfold and yes the lists rule. Long live the lists!

  44. I am so pleased you found a house you love so quickly! I like the balcony on the first floor, just imagine the small table and chairs, sitting in the sun and reading a book. Happy renovating. x

  45. Ooh, that's great news! But it makes me feel soooo old! We bought our first home in 1964 and it was brand new, so I don't think of the 1960s as being 'period', which to young people now they are!!!
Hideous wallpaper, glad you have made a start on the fireplace so that that black paper can be removed! I take it you didn't actually like it, har, har!

  46. Congratulations! I never thought I'd end up in a 70s house (mine was built in 1971) but, like you, I fell for the big windows and room sizes. You're doing the right thing getting everything checked out and sorted before you move in - I had someone check the electrics and boy did we find some weird stuff! x

  47. I am so glad that you found somewhere so lovely. I shall really enjoy watching you transform this house into a home. It will be such a help being able to work on an empty house. We moved here eleven years ago but still haven't decorated our bedroom, we just can't face having all that stuff in the lounge!! (Hubby would say there is too much but a girl can never have too much by way of craft supplies even if these are overspill from our craft space!). Enjoy every moment of it, especially crossing things off your list! There is definitely something thereaputic about lists!!! Xx

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
