I would really like to share some of my favourite moments from our recent week in West Cornwall. For us, holidays like this come once a year and are special - much anticipated before and savoured afterwards. I'll limit myself to two posts, with three days in each, and apologise now for the number of photos. In my defence it really is the most stunning corner of our country, wild and remote but buzzing with people and culture at the same time.

Saturday: St Ives
The view as we walked from the station (we'd chosen to use the park and ride as parking is a nightmare) down into St Ives. It was an overcast, warm, hazy sort of day. You could tell it was going to be hot later.
Our visit to Tate St Ives, which happily coincided with a rain shower and made us feel smug about our (accidental) good timing. It's an excellent gallery, incredibly child friendly and small enough for us to feel we'd seen it properly without spending too long inside.
A very nice lunch in the gallery cafe (a delicious crab salad open sandwich for me) and drinking beer at lunchtime which is allowed when you're on holiday.
Emerging from the gallery into bright sunshine and views of English summertime.
The way the palm trees and white sand made me feel as though we were really, properly, On Holiday.
Good shopping and massive, aggressive seagulls. I was constantly going back and forth between thinking how much I love the sound of seagulls, and how they are really a bloody menace.

Sunday: Kynance Cove
I absolutely loved this information sign at the start of the path down to the beach, carved from wood. It was wonderfully warm and tactile, and was clearly designed to be touched as well as read.
The walk from the car park down to the beach. You can see the cafe there, nestled into the rock. Views everywhere you look.
We were glad we arrived at the cove so early, when it was relatively quiet because, by midday, you could not move. There was barely room to put down a towel or groundsheet. Kynance is certainly not a local secret anymore, but it's no less beautiful for that.
Watching these two chase the waves. Not quite brave enough to swim in the cold surf, they were instead content to spend most of the day running back and forth between shallows and shore, splashing and shrieking.

Monday: Godrevy Lighthouse and Trevaskis Farm
The wildness of the coastline here - just incredibly, bleakly beautiful, even on a grey day.
The wildness of the coastline here - just incredibly, bleakly beautiful, even on a grey day.
I love a lighthouse. There's just something about them.
Rocks and pools and excellent rock pooling.
Angus insisting that he would wear socks with his Crocs, even though we were clearly on a beach. Strange, stubborn boy. Watching the kids enjoy being on the beach doing the exact same things that I did when I was a child.
Watching these two wade out into the water when is was frankly pretty nippy. Mad or brave, I'm not sure. Then making it back to the car just as the heavens opened and it absolutely poured with rain. We were again smug about our (accidental) good timing.
Lunch and a sunny afternoon at a really nice local farm. I was reminded again at how simple children's needs often are. After a morning spent peering in rock pools and drawing in the sand, they were content to spend the afternoon looking at animals. And I admired the sweet peas.
We picked strawberries that grew from those waist-high planters, a first for us.
Our local strawberry PYO is a squat in the field kind of get up, nothing like this. I think I'd rather be out in the open air than in a polytunnel though.
Just lovely, all of it. I can tell that you all had a relaxing time. The beach looks a lot like beaches I've seen in the northeastern part of my own country, I can see why people came from there and felt at home here. I love that photo of Bella near the strawberries, it's very pretty.
ReplyDeleteThe photos are stunning. It all looks so wonderful. It's a dream of mine to travel the English country and sea side. It's a long way from Melboune Australia though. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! Îm very happy to find your blog. Thanks for sharing your precious moments!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to see your pictures of Cornwall which is one of my favourite holiday destinations, even though it's quite far away from me. I have a particular fondness for St. Ives which you show so nicely in your second shot. Your children look so happy!
ReplyDeleteLooks as though you had the most wonderful holiday! The blue of that sea! Looking forward to part 2 now xx
ReplyDeleteLovely photos - happy and carefree just the way holidays should be. I totally agree with your love of the wild beauty of this remote corner of the world which beckons us with its arty vibe. Looking forward to more pics and thanks for sharing xo
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely summer we have had. I love your photos of Cornwall. Reminds me of all my childhood holidays there.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos - you must have spent a perfect holiday !
ReplyDeleteCornwall looks so pretty - I've never been there (whenever we pop over to the UK, it's almost always London and that's it), but it surely looks like it deserves a visit !!
Great photos. Cornwall is beautiful and when the sun shines it is even more glorious. Looking forward to part 2!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos. We've been to Cornwall on holiday quite a few times but, surprisingly, never to St. Ives - it's now on my 'Places To Go' list! You look as though you had a really lovely, relaxing holiday. x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, looks like you had a wonderful holiday. I went to Cornwall for the first time last year, it's such a nice place and I really want to go to back to go to Kynance Cove now I've seen your pictures.
ReplyDeleteRosie
Gosh, what a lvely holiday. Memories are made of this! xx
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great holiday. I've only been to Cornwall once for a few days but was very impressed by how beautiful it is. Seeing your children in the sea reminds me of when I was a child. No matter what sort of day it was, if we were at the beach I HAD to at least paddle. There's an old photo of me, about 6 or 7, paddling in freezing cold water with my coat on.
ReplyDeleteLovely - the sort of holidays that you remember forever. Nothing wrong with holidays 'at home' and simple pleasures! x
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm off to North Wales later this month so your photos are getting me in the mood for the seaside. Hope I can get an open crab sandwich as well!
ReplyDeleteI love looking through pictures of Cornwall, I lived there aged 18-23, first in Portreath (along the coast nearer St Agnes) with my then surfer boyfriend, and then in Falmouth to do my degree at the art college, where I met hubs. It will always be a special place for me. St Ives is probably my favourite place, I remember college trips to the Tate followed by a battle on the beach keeping hold of lunch with those thuggish seagulls trying their luck!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous time you had Gillian...I love Cornwall too and can't wait for your next instalment

After seeing your posts on IG, I was looking forward to more updates on your blog. Those strawberries look so juicy! It looks like a fabulous time was had by all. I've never been to Cornwall, it is on our list of places to visit. We are so very lucky to have such beautiful, lush surroundings in the UK.
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds truly delicious! It looks very similar to NW Scotland, where we ended up, but we had midges instead of people! Not sure which I'd prefer - I love getting away from crowds and noise, but don't appreciate being bitten! Glad you had a great time. x
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful part of the world, and you all clearly had a great time. The views are indeed stunning.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful area - perfect for a family holiday I would say:) Bella and Angus look like they're in their element, especially in and around the water! I do love the pic of the sweet peas too, xoJoy
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous. Brings back many fond memories. I lived in Plymouth as a postgrad student. Happy times. T x
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning!!!! Love the little cafe nestled on the rocks!!! I have never seen strawberries grown like that!!! Lovely post!!!!

Cornwall is just the best holiday destination ever (and I am well travelled). We have been for three years running, although not in the part of Cornwall where you have just been. Your photos make me think that maybe we should deviate from our usual destination for once. It looks like you had a wonderful time. My littlest two boys always insist on wearing socks in crocs :)
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds and looks amazing. The children looks so happy .I love Cornwall. I was born in Torbay , my parents moved to London when I was two .Every summer we visited every year for over 30 years. I have not been back for 6 years .I must go back soon.
ReplyDeleteI have just eaten a strawberry just because your photo reminding me I have a punnet, all I need was a pot of clotted cream
Lovely photos - we too have just returned from Cornwall (crantock bay) and it truly is a lovely place to visit shame its so far away from us!! Did you find the one road in a complete nightmare we were stuck in traffic for ages.xx
ReplyDeleteI so want to go to Cornwall one day (soon, please). It seems like one of those places for long, relaxing days. xxx
ReplyDeleteOh it's wonderful in Cornwall isn't it. I love to go over the photos long afterwards and remember how lovely it all is there. We stood in exactly the same place at Kynance Cove back at the beginning of July. It's just about my favourite beach now, I loved it. I especially liked how well the National Trust are looking after it and the planet as well, with all their green measures. I shall look forward to your next holiday post, I'm really enjoying seeing your photos and looking out for places I know. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteI really like the berry pictures. And yes, a bit of the ocean and some animals - sounds like it would make me happy too! With the lighthouse, rocky coast, and chilly water, it sounds a bit like the Maine coast we were just at.
ReplyDeleteSuch breathtaking views! I was just in Florida for a week and I thought it was gorgeous there, but these photos are just as beautiful! St. Ives looks like my cup of tea and some place I would love to visit with my children, and a Tate there??? How cool is that?? That lighthouse is a dream, how cool would it be to spend the night on that tiny little Island?
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great up coming weekend,
Much love,
Tammy
What great pictures, happy holidays. Jo x
ReplyDeleteI only realised today that it's been 8 years since our holiday in Cornwall! We visited St Ives too and did the park and ride. Such a pretty place. I didn't see a lighthouse though so I'm very envious. Such gorgeous scenery down there. Looking forward to part 2. x
ReplyDeleteI have only been to Cornwall once and thought it was beautiful. Lovely photographs.
ReplyDeleteCornwall looks so beautiful, it's definitely on my list of places I would love to go. It looks fantastic for a family holiday. It looks and sounds like you all had a fantastic time, your photos are lovely as always.

Cornwall looks amazing! I really want to visit England some day. Just beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteLots of beachy views which is what childhood holidays are all about.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of the strawberries being at wait height.
I like the idea of Pimms even more.

ah, so many of my my favourite places in one post :) I'm so glad you had a lovely time and the weather seems to have behaved itself for you! x
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful vacation! I've never had Eton Mess before, but I hear about it all the time...it's on my bucket list! :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about the seagulls in St.Ives. They're so aggressive! I was with friends and we were down by the water and one of the seagulls just grabbed my ice cream. I was left with an empty cone! I'm still annoyed whenever I remember this but despite this unhappy experience I still love St.Ives and yes, Kynance Cove is a real gem. So glad we went the last time we were there and glad to see you had a wonderful time there too. x
ReplyDeleteThese are all places I love too, and I think you can never have too many pictures of somewhere as lovely as Cornwall x
ReplyDeleteHow come we don't see this on the brochures for England? They generally focus on the quaint villages and roiling hills. This is just gorgeous and you all looked like you had a ball!
