The Colour Collaborative: August: Collection

Collections are interesting things. When is a collection a collection? I have a lot of jugs, but I wouldn't say I collect them, I just like buying and using them. A collector - to my mind - is someone armed with knowledge, always searching for that perfect, elusive item to add to their collection. I don't really collect anything - I thought - but a glance around our home showed me that, yes, actually I do like to collect something: photographs. From the group of Polaroids I have stuck to the wall, to the ten or so framed family photos I have on a shelf in the dining room, these are my collections, our family moments grouped together.

And that's the thing about collections, they can be public or private, or both. For me, there is always a tension between how much of my family - information and photographs - I will show here. I want this space to reflect our lives honestly, but am wary of over-sharing, and I have always aimed to keep photos of our children to a minimum on here. I think many bloggers tread this same fine line, and what feels right for one blogger is not the same for another. And that leads me to another collection of photographs, a public one this time: my Instagram account. I collect, curate and publish my own photographs on there, for all to see. Just snaps on my phone, yes, but no less valuable to me for that. I decide what I want to photograph and how I want people to see it although I have to be honest here and say that it's the social side of Instagram which is the most fun - and the most important - to me.

I recently had some of my Instagram photos printed*. I didn't want to be limited to looking at them on my phone and I think that sometimes I forget how much pleasure there is in a photographic print, in holding a real, actual photo in your hand rather than always looking at it on a screen. I decided to create a new collection of them on our hall wall.

Something I seem to like to photograph is that blogger favourite, the downwards-looking shot of a table. They are bursting with the rich colour of a fresh bunch of flowers, a new ball of yarn or a creative project on the needles or hook. Little still lives, they are amusing to arrange and photograph, and then you get to eat the cake and drink the tea afterwards.

But it turns out that is not what I wanted on our wall. Pretty as these images are, they only reflect me, they don't say anything about our family. What I really wanted to look at was memories of moments, of days out, holidays, carnivals, trips to the beach - occasions that made me smile, and I know exactly where I was and what we were doing when I took every single photo there.

And it's less colourful, this collection, it's more of a quiet spectrum of greys, browns, blues and greens. The ones that leap out to me first are the vivid blue skies. I do like a good blue sky, even more so if there are scudding white clouds or a beach scene thrown in too. My landscapes are full of gentle leaf greens and earth browns, appearing throughout a year of family walks, interspersed with pops of pink blossom and the first camellia in the spring, red strawberries in the summer, orange leaves in the autumn. I've yet to capture a white, snow-filled winter landscape here. The colours are surprisingly hushed, for they are the colours of nature for the most part, toned down by the Instagram filters. But I like how they go together, no one image shouting louder than the others, but just working as a group of small square memory-joggers.

What is The Colour Collaborative?

All creative bloggers make stuff, gather stuff, shape stuff, and share stuff. Mostly they work on their own, but what happens when a group of them work together? Is a creative collaboration greater than the sum of its parts? We think so and we hope you will too. We'll each be offering our own monthly take on a colour related theme, and hoping that in combination our ideas will encourage us, and perhaps you, to think about colour in new ways.

* I ordered mine from Origrami, and was pleased with the service, although be warned that they come printed on card not photographic paper.

  1. I love the idea of grouping your polaroids in one spot.........no frames required. I'm not on instagram (I don't use a mobile) but I love the look of the photos - so old school - I would be tempted to print them all too. xo

  3. I love how they look all grouped together like that, and so lovely to have all those memories in one place. I must get some Instagram pics printed again soon - I do like the boxes the Origrami prints come in too!
The links from others to my post don't seem to be working, not sure if I've done something wrong? xx

  4. That's a lovely collectiob of 'real' photos. They really complement each other in the way they are displayed.

  5. Oh heck, I'm having a nightmare here. Posted a comment and lost it, then posted your comment to Jennifer!! Going nuts I am! Anyway, what I said to you was....

Your photos look beautiful together, so harmonious and yet all different and interesting. And, as much as I love your 'from above' shots, I agree there is something more solitary about them, so your choices for the wall display were right I think. Keep posting them on IG though! ;)

  6. Good thing you had photos printed - nowadays, too much photos stay purely digital !

  7. They look great on your wall, aren't they a fab idea :) xxx

  8. It is a funny thing with photos and choosing what to display or not and what to share on your blog or not isn't it. Sometimes I take pictures that I love, but would never share because I don't deem them good enough or they are just wrong somehow. I think that your collection looks beautiful and is lovely as a collection, but I understand that they don't necessarily reflect what you wanted them to. It is a hard balance, but one that I am sure you will find. xx

  9. I really must get to grips with Instagram ... this post has me feeling that I'm missing something. You are so lucky to be raising your family at a time when so many memory keeping (or should that be collecting?) options exist. My kids were pretty much all teens with ideas of their own - of the don't point the camera at me variety - by the time I had social media to play with. You have the best of both worlds here, the prints themselves - will you eventually put them into an album? - and the virtual record. Lovely post :)

  10. Gorgeous photos, as usual. I must do something with all of mine - such a shame to just have them sitting on the computer. Thanks for the inspiration! xxx

  11. It is a fine line deciding what to share on a blog. I occasionally share a closer shot of a face, but it's not something I do often. I haven't used Instagram but it looks like you're having a lot of fun with it. I'm glad there's a place to share the everyday snippets of life such as you've captured in your photos.

  12. I do love to see photos all grouped together, somehow they are even more effective like that. I wish I could do Instagram, but I don't have one of those fancy phones, alas. It really appeals to me though, I like the stories that regular photos tell. Those moments that would otherwise be lost. Wonderful. I've really enjoyed this post Gillian. CJ xx

  13. Your photos are lovely and although I've taken a few whilst here, I can't seem to download them onto this (I won't be rude) silly new mini laptop. It has Windows 8.1 as its operating system and I've only just got used to 7. I'll enjoy yours instead. Take care.

  15. Great photos - I love the way you have displayed them on the wall. I have a few montages of various holidays around the house and love to daydream with a cup of tea, remembering happy moments. x

  16. Hey Gillian,
I've read your post and looked at my fledgling IG pictures, and now want to print them out too!! I love the display that you have made of them. I am thinking of doing something similar with selected pics from my blog. Lovely post.

  19. Enjoyable post to read - many of us take so many photos now and they end up stuck on the computer or phone. I have made several photobooks which we all enjoy browsing over and over again - but they take me some time to compile. I like your collection of yarny photos

  20. Isn't it interesting to appreciate as a whole the colors of a collection of photos such as you have made, Gillian; and you appreciate the overall impression they make, yet can focus on individual sights that can evoke all different shades of feelings as well?
Privacy versus public promotion is a tension I wrestle with in blogging as well, but have not leaped into Instagram to experience it as you are, you clever girl :-)
Thanks for sharing some hues and views of one of your collections! xx

  21. There is something about a collection of photos that you can hold in your hand. In fact although I have 100's of photos on my phone in my handbag I usually also have a couple of real photos of my grandchildren in there too.
I suppose it's a similar thing to holding a book. It's great I can use my ipad to read my books in bed in virtual darkness but wonderful to sit in the garden in the sunshine with a new book that creaks as you first open it and you can feel and smell the new paper as you flick over the pages.

  22. After all the pets the family photos are what I would save in a fire, they are memories and so precious. I also tread a fine line because of work, as a manager I can't put anything on I wouldn't want the staff at work to know, of course come retirement my wild alter ego will emerge (sadly that is a joke!)

  23. Love this post and the collection of pictures on your wall. I have been thinking about making one in our new house in the upstairs hallway but haven't been able to get the frames ... Looking at yours I just thought ... Who needs frame ? I'm excited and inspired :)

  24. I love your collection of prints. The colour palette is perfect and I have a definite fondness for blue skies too. I had a few IG photos printed recently. It made me appreciate the simple act of holding a printed photograph again. I really must print more pictures. Bee xx

PS I used Polargram for my prints. I like them but they're glossier than I'd like. Were yours printed with a matt finish?

  25. I love your collection! We're trying hard to print off more photos to display or to make albums. it's all too easy for them to stay hidden on the hard drive!

  27. Such a lovely collection of photos! I love how you have arranged them and how the colors work together to make such beautiful, tranquil piece of art.

  28. Hello,
I've been enjoying your blog for a while but not yet commented! I love the way you've arranged the photos on your walls, but curious to know how you stuck them up without frames? I've used blutack before, but found it makes the corners ever so slightly lumpy and after a few years they start to fall off.
I've also wondered about the sharing photos thing, and have decided I just need to find a different place than my blog to keep my family/people photos. Can't wait to get some more up on the walls! :)

    1. Hello, thank you so much!

I used blutack, but in ever such tiny amounts, the absolute smallest I could get away with as I know what you mean about the bumps. I expect the blutack will dry out over time but in six months or so I'll probably order another batch of prints and refresh the whole arrangement.Hope that helps! x
