Many, many thanks for all your suggestions and recommendations on apps following my last post. Just brilliant, all of them, and I've had a lot of fun exploring them this week. Someone suggested a follow up post on the apps I've been using but I don't want to make this an exclusive, iPad-only thing, and I know that most of us are using our good old laptops, PCs and other tablets, so I'm undecided about that yet. A couple of you nicely pointed out that I'd forgotten to mention one MAJOR source of inspiration and that is, of course, blogs. And it's true. I can only think that the little time I've had to read blogs this summer holiday made me forget that but I mustn't, as I honestly do find blogs to be one of my biggest sources of inspiration and not just for craft, but for cooking, decorating, days out, ideas, all sorts of things really.

Onto my weekly round-up of happy things.
: : We've enjoyed some really pleasant walks lately, taking in the change in seasons and the slow move into autumn. Although it if it could slow down a bit that would be nice. I like autumn, but not in August. Brrr.
And there's nothing like a big pile of logs to make you feel that Winter Is Coming, but in a comforting homemade-soup-and-knitted-socks kind of way, not in a Game of Thrones kind of way.
: : A glance back over another week of the school holidays reveals lots of opportunities for small happinesses from people of all ages. Day trips, boat trips, trains, museums - we've covered most of the modes of transport this summer holiday, apart from flying.
A boat trip around Portsmouth Harbour to Gunwharf in the early morning sun last Saturday was memorable. I like boats and being on the water. I also like shopping and lunch out, so it's win-win, frankly.
:: Garlic mushrooms on toast. I just really fancied it and it was lush.
: : A brand new soap. This is a major weakness of mine. Do you remember those TV adverts for instant coffee from the eighties where they would slowly break the seal on a new jar of coffee, and how satisfying that was? It's that kind of pleasure. Unwrapping a brand, spanking new soap, releasing the gorgeous smell, being the first one to use it before it goes all slimy (or is that just in our house, soaps that seem to swim in their water-filled soap dishes.)
But this was a pleasure to buy (from this lovely shop in York), and I love the name and the packaging - it pleases me greatly when packaging is nice - and best of all it smells delicious. And while I don't like instant coffee much, I do love to break the foil seal on a new jar of, say, hot chocolate or nutella, and peel it off round the edges really carefully. That makes me happy too.
My mother reckons there's nothing like the smell of a new bar of soap after it's been freed from its wrapper and is held in the hand. She hates liquid soap with a vengeance so I know when I tell her about your post she will be thrilled that you have a weakness for soap too
ReplyDeleteOh my, I haven't eaten garlic mushrooms on toast for far too long! xxx
ReplyDeleteA girl after my own heart ... I love opening a fresh bar of soap ... favourites right now are from the range by Roger & Gallet, especially their ginger soap. I also love Penhaligon's range, in particular Blenheim Bouquet. And good old Floris, too, of course. Good quality soap is one of my weaknesses - it is sensible, too, as the better the quality the less mushy it goes. The Roger & Gallet stay whole, neither do they go dry and form cracks. Highly recommended.

Oh, I'm a fellow soap-lover too (and much prefer it to shower gel). And I love that shop - well, the one in Hebden Bridge anyway. You have to go in there when they've got their Christmas on. It's so glamorous and lovely; I always end up taking lots of photos of the sheer sparkliness of it all.
ReplyDeleteThe mushrooms look good too. I joined Slimming World on Wednesday evening and was most grateful for your previous post with meal ideas, so thank you for that! Next project: making sushi. That has to fit in with the whole regime, right?
Have a great weekend.

Oh those mushrooms look delicious! I have some in my fridge and know what I am going to have for lunch tomorrow. I love soap and would love to visit this shop but alas, I am too far away. I make my own soap so I can choose the scent. I made a batch of olive oil and palm oil soap that doesn't go mushy, but the coconut oil, shea butter and olive oil soap does. Maybe it depends on the fats used? Have a lovely weekend. Cx
ReplyDeleteLovely happies I always think coffee smells so much nicer than it tastes, autumn does seems to have turned up early this year, come back summer

We have recently moved to a house with two-soon to be three open fires, I am feeling a huge amount of log envy from this post!
ReplyDeleteThe early autumn is really strange experience, it's so odd having that chill in the mornings, the autumn smells and feeling and all the berries and such in August. I'm worried about what this will mean for the wildlife, if we get an early or bad winter, they will have eaten all the food that was available too early and have nothing left to see them through to spring. A lovely collection of Friday happies, I'd love a sniff of that soap!
ReplyDeleteIt fells like autumn is coming so fast here.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am already knitting socks.
And I could have a collection of soap, I like it so much. I put them in my furniture and it smells good.
Have a great week end.
Miss
Haha! I LOVE to carefully peel the foil from a new pot of chocolate spread too. That comment has made my Friday happy! The simplest things! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is funny how little things like your unwrapping your new soap give us so much pleasure and are often far more enjoyable than big or expensive things. It is like starting a new ball of yarn for me, it is all new and lovely and untouched! xx
ReplyDeleteYour happies this week are definitely my happies too. Guess what's going on tomorrows breakfast toast!
ReplyDeleteI agree totally about the new soap as a small but delightful luxury. I have been using YSC's Orange and Orange Peel soap as my absolute favourite since I found it last year in Hebden Bridge, quite possibly through your blog, if I can remember rightly. This neroli scent is such a treat and has totally trumped my previous L'Occitane Lavender and Lush's snowcake both of which I'd been using for 20yrs!
I just bought myself a new honey soap! It smells delicious and had my man roll his eyes as I pushed away three other bottles if soap to make room for it on the sink! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI do love a new soap too!
ReplyDeleteSoaps in our house go slimey too. I can't resist the bands on wool, just have to pull them off whole rather than break them, silly, I know!
ReplyDeleteMmm, I'm with you on the soap. Yesterday I unwrapped a verbena one from L'Occitane I'd been given for Christmas and savoured the smell. Very pleasing!
ReplyDeleteI agree about getting ideas from blogs. Even where to go for a day out.
ReplyDeleteOn the soap ....I have been using soaps from Gamrie Goats , in Scotland, for a few years now. Made from her own goats milk. Award winning...suitable for sensitive skin. My favourite is Balmy Bee Honey and Goosey Lucy egg and lemon shampoo bar.(the soaps are named after the goats, and goose, ha ha.)Christine does lovely gift sets too. Worth a look.
I like to carefully peel the top off of chocolate jars as well, but not coffee, I'm not a coffee drinker. It looks like you've been having a really enjoyable summer. Lots of blue, which is always good. I hope the last week is a lovely one too. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteOoh there's nothing like unwrapping a new bar of soap. Those mushrooms look delicious too - one of my favourite foods and they give off such a fab aroma as they're cooking, heaven! Your summer holidays posts have been a pleasure to read Gillian, looks like a good time had by all. Hope you enjoy the remainder before back to school, etc.
ReplyDeleteJane xx
Love the photo of the spiders web. I love the new soap moment, but what do you do when it gets slimey. It may be a throwback to my childhood but I feel you have to use the whole bar even when it's really grotty. This also means that the new bar moments are very few and far between (I'm so old that we actually had carbolic soap when I was very little ... That was never nice!) xx
ReplyDeleteGood old Gunwharf, great place for a mooch.
ReplyDeleteLove the look of your new soap.

I have always believed it is the little things in life that give the greatest pleasures .For me , I love a new book. I love the that I alone have opened new a book fully and that I create the first crease on its spine .I love opening a tube of new l'occitance shea butter hand cream.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit OCD and I get such pleasure from spraying that first spray on my flash with bleach product on my cooker top.LOL
I imagine your new soap smells so nice! I love to treat myself to something special like this from time to time. I am so ready for Autumn to arrive this year. I am craving cooler weather, pumpkins, yummy soups and stews - I could go on and on!
ReplyDeleteOh, I too love a fresh bar of soap...especially ones as sweetly packaged as yours. :) Thanks again for your lovely Friday Happies...I do so enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI love the soap. I have fantasies about having a beautiful soap in my bathroom but sadly they always turn to mush whilst sitting in a (fragrant) but yukky pool of water. Have they just opened a shop in Leeds? (someone at work was talking about it). I love the smell of freshly opened coffee (beans or instant) there's something very satisfying on breaking the seal. Lots of lovely happies once again. xxx
ReplyDeleteThose mushrooms on toast have made my mouth water!
ReplyDeleteI like your post very much i had nice time while reading your post.
ReplyDeleteThis is really nice topic, which is very useful for me.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm - garlic mushrooms on toast - totally delicious. I with you on opening things that erlease the smell for the first time. A new soap is special.
ReplyDeleteThat garlic mushroom is appetizing.
ReplyDeletelove the log pile - and wholeheartedly agree with the "home made soups and hand knitted socks"!
ReplyDeleteCaz xx
I just made a batch of goats milk and honey soap which got a bit too hot so the sugars caramelised ... it smells like treacle tart!! I think I'll enjoy using that batch lol!!
ReplyDeleteSoap swims in the dish in our house too :-) x
ReplyDeleteLovely happy things. I miss soap bars. I love coal tar soap, it reminds me of my Big Nanny (as in tall, not big).
