Wow, thank you so much for your response to my Advent boxes! I was worried that I'd gone a bit over the top with them (ok, I definitely did go a bit over the top) but you all liked them and could understand why I'd bothered - for the love of crafting mainly, and for the love of Christmas. Isn't it interesting how appealing things are in miniature form? I bought a couple of bits for those boxes from a dolls house website and I did enjoy browsing those sites. I could really get into the whole dolls house thing given half a chance, but it's probably best if I never go there. But thank you very, very much for your comments.
Well, this weekend has been a whirlwind and I am completely exhausted. We have a beautiful new, four-legged addition to our family called Molly. We collected her yesterday afternoon from our local branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust. She is two and a half and was taken in by the charity when the trainer who owned her retired, which is why she's younger than the usual age for a retired greyhound.
It's been bonkers. She's never lived in a house before so, while it's not quite like having a puppy, there is still a lot of work to be done with training around toileting, food and sleeping. She needs to wear a muzzle when we go out on walks as, to be blunt, she thinks that all birds, squirrels and small dogs are to be chased and eaten. She's only ever been around greyhounds so she needs to learn to play nicely with other dogs, especially smaller ones. The muzzle will come off soon; she's bright and very motivated by treats and praise. We took her to Bosham this morning, a favourite place of ours, for her first sniff of sea air. If all this sounds like a lot of work it is, but we are all a bubble of Molly love.
At home she was at first very quiet, a little anxious, and followed us around. She only settles when we all sit down, which is practically never, as we are always up and down, in and out, doing things, so she is constantly underfoot. But she's also delightful and mischievous and there is definitely a playful side there. She loves her bed and keeps pilfering things - slippers, jumpers, oven gloves - to put in her nest which we all find adorable. She likes picking up shoes and putting them down in places where the owner can't find them. I found one of my boots under the sofa earlier. Mealtimes are interesting because she has never been around food preparation - before, she got fed and that was it. As soon as we sit down at the table she appears, sniffing around plates and all cooking smells are fascinating to her. This afternoon Bella and I made mince pies and I just helped myself to one from the tin (guiltily, in case Molly saw). When my back was turned she had her paws up on the worktop and was trying to open the cake tin with her teeth! So, basically we are getting to know each other and it's hard work but wonderful.
Christmas preparations are ongoing in amongst all this madness. Eucalyptus is currently my new favourite thing and I've made a little indoor wreath from an embroidery hoop. It took about ten minutes and I love it. The silver green of the eucalyptus is so pretty, I really like having it in the house, and it smells fantastic too. I cleared everything off the mantel this week and tried to put back one or two things and I think it looks better that way. I gave my round shelf a little festive attention and treated myself to the Christmas copy of Country Living. I have ordered a turkey and ham, and bought cards and stamps. Of course I haven't written or posted any cards, but simply knowing I bought them makes me feel a whole lot more organised.
So pleased to see your new family member, Molly. We are currently discussing 'a dog', it's such a big decision!!! Looking forward to following your journey with Molly. Sarah
ReplyDeleteI'm sure she'll fit in and there will be mutual love and a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteHi Gillian, you will find a rescue dog hard work. However, it does get easier and it is definitely worth it! Our first lurcher was beaten and dumped at the side of the road; the dog warden didn't know if he would even survive. Our patience and persistence paid off and he is now fully house trained and the perfect companion. We don't believe he had ever lived in a house either so there was a lot to learn for him. He is also a terrible thief - when we first had him, he stole a joint of beef and climbed out of the kitchen window with it! He also loves cakes, which we still have to guard with our lives; any unattended food is fair game! Yes, we have lost a few shoes along the way, but he is such an important part of our family so it was definitely one of the best decisions we ever made! Kindness, patience and persistence is what these rescued dogs need; with that you will be rewarded a million times over. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteA whole joint of beef, good grief! That made me smile. X
DeleteGlad to hear that Molly is settling in well and doing all of the right doggy things that her doggy instincts are telling her to do. She sounds wonderful! Just hug her and enjoy her and you will not go too far wrong!
ReplyDeleteMolly has a lovely smile and I can imagine you will have many interesting adventures with her! Your good organization and clever decorating ideas inspire me...we just had a flash of lightening and rumble of thunder as rain pours down...but I can see a tiny patch of blue sky out one window...oops it is gone and and the forecast is that we might get a bit of snow by tomorrow morning...a prelude to winter! Happy week to you and yours xx
ReplyDeleteBoth of my greyhounds have proven themselves to be very adept at stealing food; Tess could steal cake without anyone noticing (until it was too late) and Alice has managed to find ways of taking food from beneath our noses, she's also expert at opening boxes of cake/chocolates/biscuits, etc.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Molly will settle in and be a delight, retired greyhounds are so grateful and appreciative of a comfortable home and they reward you ten times over. Best of luck to you all X
Molly is gorgeous and with love and attention will soon be settled in your family. Lucky girl to go to such a loving, happy home. Enjoy the journey together. Love the little wreath too.
ReplyDeleteHi, Molly looks adorable. We have a two year old lab and every day little things make me realise how pleased I am that we decided to have her. Hard work but so rewarding. I look forward to hearing about her in your inspiring posts. Enjoy and thank you for sharing Louise xx
ReplyDeleteShe's a lovely little thing, don't think I've ever seen a black greyhound before.
ReplyDeletePlease don't give up on her and send her back, like another blogger did with their dog. A dog is part of the family and that means forever.
ReplyDeleteMolly looks lovely, with her big soulful eyes. She is very beautiful. Please look after her and cherish and love her the way she deserves. People are so mean to their dogs, shouting at them all the time. You seem to have found out a lot about her character already. I saw 3 greyhounds today, all wearing coats. I wish people put coats on other breeds of dogs - it's cold outside!
I hope you all continue to be happy with Molly and love to have her in your family. I am glad she is young as it means she has so much fun time left in a nice happy place, living as dogs ought and not as a means of earning money for people. Wishing Molly many years of happiness and joy living with you all and being part of a family that will care for her.
Molly is so pretty! I hope your life with her will be fulfilling and fun. It sounds like you have the patience and attentiveness she needs. Enjoy your Christmas preparations. I'll be baking up a storm next weekend. I have my recipes and ingredients ready to go, can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteMolly is a beautifully young lady! She looks like she has found her forever home! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteShe is so adorable and sounds very intelligent! I love the thought of her sneaking things to put in her bed. Have fun. xx
ReplyDeleteMolly is just gorgeous. I'm sure with a lot of love (and training) she will make the perfect addition to your family. My friend adopted two retired Greyhounds who are just fantastic, gentle pets.
ReplyDeleteI have the same 'work top problem' with Lily!😊 X
Aw she's beautiful. I'm sure she'll settle in quickly <3
ReplyDeleteMolly really looks like she is a mixture of bright, slightly anxious (until she understands that she's with you for good), playful and grateful - definitely hard work, but definitely worth it!
ReplyDeleteWhat happens while you are all out at school and work?
As always, I love the glimpses of your house, and the photos of the walk are great, too.
When Steve and I took in the cat I owned last (until she died of old age, almost 4 years ago now), she had never lived in a house, either. Everything was new to her, and she was really scared of the telly. She also searched through our bins for food - that had been her main source for meals all her life. But soon, she understood that a) food now came in her own dish at regular times and tasted really good, b) the telly was nothing to be afraid of (but still interesting) and c) it was so much more comfortable ON a bed than underneath!
Hello Molly!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was 10 we adopted an approx. 18mth old hound (a small, slim version of a foxhound!). It was hard to even walk her home along the road, she was so afraid. She was terrified of the lift. My dad showed her her blanket and she was afraid to leave it. Later she ate library books and my glasses and stole a steak between pan and table... We had her for 10 years and she became a lovely family dog we could take anywhere. She was my only 'sibling'! We could rarely let her off the lead except when cross-country skiing, when she ran 3 times the distance, back and forth... As an adult I've gone on to have two more dogs (Bernese mountain cross and cocker spaniel - what can I say, I like floppy ears!!) and having had a rescue dog helped later on, too. My eldest daughter also always has a dog (presently a Great Dane) and the other two will do when they settle. It's so very worth it!!
All the best, much fun and patience - enjoy!
Welcome to the dog world. Molly is lovely. You have taken a lot on, but that means the rewards will be greater! X
ReplyDeleteThis post and your photos of Molly have made me very happy today!
ReplyDeleteMolly is just gorgeous! We too are really enjoying poor doggy addition! Have a great week. X
ReplyDeleteChristmas has definitely come early for Molly! I'm so happy for all of you and I'm sure the hard work, especially in these early days, will be more than balanced by all the love and fun.
ReplyDeleteShe's adorable!
ReplyDeleteMolly is delightful, she is a lucky girl to be in a loving family home where there is so much to discover and do together. She will be such a loyal companion for you. Your decorations look very pretty and homely.
ReplyDeleteThank you for a wonderful post! Welcome to sweet Molly! She looks so beautiful and I can imagine how much you love her! It is a challenge to have a big dog, without home training with you, but I'm sure she will learn quickly. We have 10 and 12 years old puppies and from tomorrow for one week 6 months old labrador. I'm her nanny as well as their other dog, golden retriever (which stays at her home and I go often there). Happy Christmas time! x Teje
ReplyDeleteOh she's absolutely beautiful, I can just imagine how silky and smooth she is. Such a happy story that now she has a house to live in and a family to love her. I'm wishing you many happy years together. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteAw she's beautiful and sounds thoroughly entertaining. My little houndy Rocky was rescued by my father in law when he was younger. I had no hesitation in taking him on when my father in law passed away. They soon become very much loved members of the family quirks and all x
ReplyDeleteMolly looks adorable! I'm really looking forward to more Molly-stories in the future! :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable Molly... looking forward to beautiful photographs of your new family member as well as glimpses of your lovely home. Which is looking oh so stylishly festive, yet cosy and homely too. Beautiful. (You have not helped with the are we ready for a dog ongoing discussion. Yes, insists our nine-year old. But we have a slightly daft yet timid cat. She is scared of butterflies...)
ReplyDeleteTwo comments in one here because I didn't have time when I read your previous post:
ReplyDelete1. Advent boxes – inspired and gorgeous. Lovely, lovely.
2. Molly – Oh. My. Goodness. She is beautiful and I wish you many happy years together. The photo of her with Angus says it all. Fabulous. Sam x
PS I'm eyeing up my neighbour's eucalyptus tree...
Congratulations on your new family member Gillian - one more thing to make the holiday season bright! Having adopted many "rescue" dogs and fostered several, I know all about the excitement/stress of having a new dog in the house, especially one that has never known the creature comforts of an indoor home. Lots of patience and love (and exercise), which she looks like she is definitely getting from your family! :)
ReplyDeleteMolly looks adorable! Good luck with all the training as I'm sure it will all be worth it with lots of fun and adventures ahead.
ReplyDeleteShe's got a beautiful little face - you're going to have a lovely Christmas with her this year - it'll be fun! Xx
ReplyDeleteMolly is gorgeous, here's to many happy years with her as a member of your family x
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely dog, and how fortunate she is to have entered such a loving family!

PS Meant to say that I recognised Bosham. First saw this in the lovely late Nigel Farrell's film An English Village, on TV many years ago. Then we stayed there for a couple of nights more than a decade ago, at a B&B called Hatpins. Wonder if it's still there?

Congratulations on your Molly!!! I had a Molly too and I will love her forever! (P.S. I loved your little Advent boxes; such adorable ideas.) I always enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteAwe Molly looks adorable. I hope she settles well, and I'm sure you have many wonderful years with her at your side.
ReplyDeleteHave a super Christmas xxxx
Meant to say love the wreath too! x
ReplyDeleteMolly is a stunner. I lost my beautiful black boy greyhound in January this year and miss him so much. Rescue greyhounds make the most wonderful, gentle pets and they love nesting! Because of his height, we had to move everything towards the back of the work surfaces as our boy would just hoover up anything he could reach. Glad Molly's found a lovely new home with you.
ReplyDeleteMolly is beautiful. She sounds like a lot of fun too x
ReplyDeleteMy girl makes mince pies just like that!! with stars and everything, I have apost coming up about it. I am back in the land of IT but not the land of the living - plays, birthday parties, work, concerts etc. Too much for me - stop the world I want to get off but next week my work commitments will taper off and I can relax and enjoy advent. Talking of advent, those boxes are awesome. I hope Bella likes her Dolls house things. My girls have put Christmas trees up in theirs this weekend and it started a flurry of dolls house play. I remember you liking my post about dolls houses. (I like arranging stuff in them when they are at school too!) Enjoy your week. As for your dog, she looks right at home already. Jo x
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for all of you but especially Molly. She is gorgeous and is going to be such a wonderful part of your family. COngrats.
ReplyDeleteLove Molly.she is so lucky to have such a caring family and people that are willing to put in the hard work and have the patience to help her.A lot of people do not understand the ordeal that Greyhounds go through.Hats of to you and good luck with her she is soooo pretty.xx
ReplyDeleteRescuing a dog is such a rewarding thing. I love my two dearly even though they are still a challenge at times, although that's more due Pablo being a grumpy Bassett hound than anything else! I'm looking forward to the school holidays to get some crafting and baking done, I've not had much time so far. x
ReplyDeleteWell who could resist those eyes. Molly is completely adorable and I am sure it must feel like she has been with you forever already, they become a part of our family so quickly.
ReplyDeleteLisa x
She's very bonny. Hope she's soon settled in and life becomes a little less hectic and a bit more normal! x
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful, your Molly. I am a bit in love actually, from a distance. Wishing you many happy years with your new family member. Make sure you keep those biscuit tins on a high shelf :-)
