Lately my life looks like this: get up, take the kids to school, work on the new house until 3.30, collect the kids, get on the homework/after school clubs/tea/bath/bed merry-go-round, eat, collapse. I'm not moaning, I am glad I can spend this time at the house as I know that once we move in work will slow down, but today brought an unexpected respite from this routine as Bella is home from school ill (although not that ill, really, as it turns out...) and so I have some precious time to blog.
As you probably know, we are staying with my parents while we do some work on the house we recently bought, and we are now at the decorating stage. It was our intention to decorate three bedrooms (Bella's, Angus's and ours) and the living room before we moved in, and I'm very happy to say we've done that, bar the odd job here and there and the installation of a wood burning stove in a couple of weeks. My life seems to revolve around paint colours lately and I have to say I have found choosing these colours quite tricky and this has surprised me. I love decorating and interior design, and choosing, and colour! But I think it's the thought of trying to choose paint for a house that we've not yet lived in that unnerves me. How do I know how a room feels, what kind of light it gets, before moving in?

These are the colour palates we've been drawn towards:
Our new home was built in 1968 and we've been conscious of that as we've looked at tester cards, aiming for tones that felt in keeping with the era of the house. Retro colours, I suppose. I realised the other day that many of these colours are evident in one of my favourite prints, the Orla Kiely Multi Stem print pattern - this photo is a close up of my address book.
Actually, John and I had a discussion about Orla the other night; I've loved her work ever since I bought a tiny green handbag by her with pears on it from Selfridges in Manchester in 2003, back when tiny handbags were fashionable and I had the disposable income for such things, and we have a few of her lovely products, homewares mainly. But I worry that the brand might be changing, like Cath Kidston did. Remember how, ten years ago, Cath Kidston stuff was lovely? All faded floral prints, light, airy and vintagey, so different to their newer patterns. Well, you see Orla designs absolutely everywhere now, even on bins! I hope I'm not going to go off her. But I argued that, however her brand changes, I will always love the multi stem print and I would go so far as to say that it's iconic now. I'd like a wall papered in it. John says no. We'll see.
Anyway, the colours. John became obsessed with the notion of an orange wall somewhere in the house, a kind of burnt rust colour. We tried a few. They were awful and will remain in their tester pots.
Then we looked at greens. Mossy, olive greens, faded and muted, a bit drab even. I love all these colours but when it came to it they were, for a multitude of reasons, discounted.
Then the yellows. We really wanted mustard yellow somewhere in the dining room. Sadly, the colour clashes horribly with the nasty orangey fake pine laminate that currently sits in that room and we can't afford to change the floor now. But we both really want a yellow wall or two someday. Just not now.
The light blue is Bella's fault. She has insisted on a light blue wall in her bedroom from day one and we were happy to oblige, just grateful we have a daughter who likes colours other than pink. I'll show you lots of photos when we're in and there's something to look at other than the blue wall.
And then dark blue. I never really thought about dark blue but, as we stood staring at the rainbow of colours in front of us, my hand kept wavering over these deep blues. I kept thinking how nice our white bed stead would look against it.
In the end we chose Princeton Blue for our bedroom and I love it more every time I see it.
Then along came the neutrals. The beautiful soothing, restful, warm, airy neutrals. Don't worry about the oranges, greens and yellows, they said. Choose us. We're stress free and easy on the eye.
To be honest, it was a relief once we'd decided neutral was the way to go. No pressure to make a bold colour choice. Nice and easy. We bought four tester pots and chose New York City Winter for the living room which is a large room and one we wanted to feel cosy but airy all at once, and used a similar shade in all the upstairs bedrooms.
Those eight holes above the fireplace are from where the previous owners had their tv mounted on the chimney breast (heathens!) and they've since been filled and painted over. And the mess of bricks at the bottom will be sorted when we get the stove fitted.
It's a tricky room as it has a wide west facing window and a lot of bright direct sunlight, but also some dark corners. Neutral works here; it's a kind of putty colour, a pale grey with a bit of brown and beige in it, and it will complement our furniture when we move in.
And then there is this colour combination, which I am currently obsessed with. I just adore that bright green at the moment, especially with pink, black and white, and I'll do a whole post about it soon.
I'm sorry I don't have prettier photos for you all right now. I'm doing my best here with limited means and not a lot of energy. I just can't wait to get in and make it all look lovely!
These tester pots are by no means a waste of money - I'll use all of them in various crafty projects. I recently used one of the mustard yellows to add some colour to the end of this pole on my wall hanging.

One last thing - this is not a sponsored post. I've provided links to Valspar paints simply because B&Q, our nearest DIY store, stocks them and that's where I've been shopping. Incidentally, I've been really impressed with their paint, as have I with Crown (bought because it was on offer) and Dulux (bought because we wanted their one-coat white on the living room ceiling) which we've also used. And B&Q's own brand Colours range is pretty good too.
Edited to add: And I totally forgot to say THANK YOU for all your generous comments about my shawl. So rude of me, I am sorry. My head is all over the place. But thank you. xx
I LOVE that green that you love. That is the colour that I wanted to paint one wall in my office - I was overruled - but I saw a wall painted in it the other day and had a yearning for it all over again. There are some wonderful shades, so I hope that you can work them in and around somewhere, in the little touches even if not in broad strokes on the walls. xx
ReplyDeleteIt's looking wonderful. I'm always a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to putting colour on the walls. I love the blue in your room very relaxing colour :) x
ReplyDeleteLooking wonderful and very much a home. :) x
ReplyDeleteI should have said that I hope Bella feels better soon. x
DeleteIt's fun to see your house taking shape. I think your color choices are interesting and bold, which is a really good thing. It's easy to always play it safe but you've taken some risks and that's wonderful. I love Orla Kiely but I've seen a lot of things, including disposable hand soap containers, in the past few years with her designs that made me raise an eyebrow. Bringing it into into mainstream, I guess, which isn't all bad, but still a little odd at times. I hope Bella is well soon.
ReplyDeleteI always love the names of paints. I would paint a wall just because of the name x
ReplyDeleteI love your Orla stem colours, they make me want to get decorating again!! Perhaps some yarn project in similar colours would be a better idea! I hope you rlittle girl soon feels better. x
ReplyDeleteI love the blue you chose in your bedroom. In fact when I looked at all the blues together that was the one I chose. I love blue.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like everything is going smoothly with the renovations !
ReplyDeleteAnd choosing paint colours, oh my so difficult... I always have ended up with neutrals... Never could decide, and in the end, a neutral is a safe way to go if you have a lot of stuff in your house...
Your new home is going to be beautiful no matter what colours you settle on, it will be lived in by beautiful people. Most of our walls are neutral now but we still have some bold colours, for example a B&Q orange study/spare room (it used to be Sam's bedroom whose favourite colour is and has always been orange, the brighter the better). I am quite taken by your blue bedroom wall. I look forward to seeing more soon. Keeping my fingers crossed for Bella to feel better tomorrow. x
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished walls....it is difficult picking a color and then disliking it once it is on the wall...I have a bathroom that is painted about 3 different shades....lol....looks like you are enjoying the process tho!
ReplyDeleteI find it so difficult to choose colours for rooms, probably because there is a mind-boggling number of colours and shades to choose from. I really like the blue in your bedroom and the living room in the neutral colour is lovely too, you must be itching to get in. Have a great week. Jane xx
ReplyDeleteI am reading an Orla book at the moment and the colourful pages are so useful for making up colour palettes for crochet jobs. I loved every word of your post. Thanks for email. Jo x
ReplyDeleteSo many colours, so many choices. We're decorating our stairs and hallway, still not sure what wallpaper I'm choosing xx
ReplyDeleteSome bonkers names for paint...how are you supposed to know what the actual colour is? I agree with your comments about Cath Kidston goods and now Orla too ?
ReplyDeleteIt must be so exciting, having a whole new house to play with. Especially as it's empty, which makes everything SO much easier. I love the neutral colour you've chosen. I like neutral colours in the home as well, although other people seem to do colour beautifully too. Your living room looks wonderful, all that lovely light, and it looks nice and green out of the window too. I think you've found a gem in your new home. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteHey Gillian,
ReplyDeleteI always, always hover around the colorful end of the paint chart spectrum. I pick up colour cards and wander around with them. I sometimes bring them home and wander around the rooms of my house as well. And yet every room in the house is now white! I guess I'm not brave enough, although I am seriously hankering after a blue bedroom wall. The Orla stem is iconic. The colours will never lose their appeal. But I agree that she is everywhere now. As is Cath Kidston bags. On every arm in the land. Your living room already looks welcoming. And hoorah for a girl who prefers blue over pink! And may she not be poorly tomorrow.
Leanne xx
I love all of those colours and have always leaned towards the warmer tones, however I am loving the blues that are around at the moment! Those greens are stunning too! We have moved into a new build and can't do much yet but I can't wait to get cracking
ReplyDeleteNot convinced about the bright green, but I'm all for the many shades of blue! (Edwyn Collins' "Fifty Shades of Blue" comes to mind, a lovely song that is played far too rarely these days.)
ReplyDeleteMy bedroom was decorated by my husband a few days before his sudden death in 2009. It sports one pale blue (duck egg blue) wall, where my bed and my desk are. The other three walls are a light, sunny vanilla. Needless to say, it is my favourite room in our house.
A terracotta kind of orange certainly looks good in most places, but you are right in being caoutious about it clashing with the floor.
I love the idea of an orange wall! And that's not something I expected to be saying :) I think the colour you've chosen for the living room looks perfect and I'm so impressed, you've done so much already! That green is amazing too, I've just realised that I've been using that one a little more myself recently. I always struggle to get it in the right shade in a nice yarn. Love the way you've teamed it with the pink and black though - fab. Oh and I agree that Orla's leaves are very iconic now and yes, she is everywhere isn't she? I do love her stuff but it's hard to fit in my house.
ReplyDeleteS x
PS Love your comment about the chimney breast mounted tv btw, absolutely agree. ;)
So looking forward to seeing all this come together. My bloggy pals are doing me good, now that I'm using the computer again. I love playing with colours and this house where we are is so depressing with all it's grey, but, maybe one day, I'll have a nice light and cheery house. Don't overdo it and take care.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that sometimes we can make a colour choice, think it's going to look wonderful and then when it's on the wall it is slightly disappointing. On the other hand we painted our lounge a mustard colour and as it was going on the wall we were both thinking, a mistake unfolding possibly. However the finished result looked great and we really like it..
ReplyDeleteYou're choosing some great colours and shades, when all of your furniture is in place you are going to have a lovely home.
PS When I was about 18 I chose an orange wall for my office where I worked. The rest of the staff thought it looked awful, personally I loved it!
I really like the colours you have chosen. The dark blue in your bedroom is great and will be lovely with white. That neutral shade is very good. I tend to stick to neautral paint colours but did a chimney breast in dark teal. I like it but I don't think anyone else does!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely is the Princeton Blue you have chosen for your bedroom, I love it! I love playing around with colour but went through major anxieties when choosing a colour for my new kitchen recently but am pleased with the end result. Cannot wait to see more photos of your new house. xx
ReplyDeleteI do admire you Gillian. Whenever it comes to paint, I always want some colour but can never make a decision about it so I always fall back to white. The only room with colour is Eleanor's (blue) because she picked it, the rest is DUlux white on white. I cant wait to see everything you do on the new pad, it's very exciting! x
ReplyDeleteI hope Bella is feeling better soon. I love reading your progress on the new home. I'm not brave when it comes to colour, so tend to stick to neutrals. I do agree that Orla is everywhere, but I think the stem print has become timeless. I remember seeing on Flickr a number of years ago a lady painted her own version of the stem print using tester pots, she drew the design in pencil and the painted it. I'm looking forward to seeing more house updates. X
ReplyDeleteOoh what a brilliant idea! That would be time consuming but a lot cheaper. Thank you, you've planted a seed there!
DeleteI've dm'd you a couple of pictures of what I found on Flickr of the "Orla stem". I hope that's okay. You could definitely do something similar.
DeleteI love the idea of using the Orla print on one wasll - it would look stunning in your period of house and with your furniture! Can't wait to see all your finished rooms. x
ReplyDeleteThat blue in your bedroom is awesome! Blue is my favourite color and I had my bedroom in my parents house painted in a very dark blue! We're saving up for a house right now but if we finally can afford it, I want to have a blue bedroom again. At least one wall! Let's see what my man thinks about that! ;)
ReplyDeleteWow! what utterly gorgeous colours. This house is going to look just wonderful when you finally get in there. I'm really interested to see it develop.
ReplyDeleteHow exiciting to follow but as I remember it from our move quite challenging to choose colours not being 100 % certain it'll fit with the furniture etc. Can't waqit to see your Kelly green wall (hope you still have it?).
ReplyDeleteyep neutral was the way to go. Once it's all in I think you will be glad. All your things will add more colour. I like the blue too. X
ReplyDeleteThat is my favorite Orla print and color way as well. I bought a stem print bag of hers in 2006. It was a different color way - no blue in it- because I was too impatient to order one and wait, I wanted to walk out of the store with it that day. I've always regretted it. I still love my bag, but I'd love it more in the other color way. I really want to do a wall with that wallpaper as well. My husband didn't say no, but we're still deciding which wall, etc. I love that you're taking that color way as inspiration for your home. When we were preparing to move last summer I tore through my collection of home decor magazines and made mood boards for each room. It has been really helpful in terms of the feel and style I want for each room.
ReplyDeleteLastly, I absolutely love the green you chose! I call that Kate Spade Green. There's a kitchen on my mood board with one wall painted that color. I'm still trying to figure out how to incorporate that into our home. I haven't been reading blogs much lately and I've had so much fun catching up on yours today Gillian! I'll be sure to look in on it more frequently. It's always so lovely and inspiring!
Hi. I came across your blog after searching for photos of Valspar's New York City Winter. I think it looks fab on your living room walls and after trying 30 tester pots (no exaggeration) I think this is the shade I'll go for, with a charcoal or dark grey feature chimney breast.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
