Imposing Order

Every day this week, between the hours of nine and three, I have been unpacking. Unpacking and cleaning, with just the radio for company, and it's been wonderful.

Yes, that is a perfectly reasonable number of mugs to have.
The kitchen was a challenge and I didn't enjoy this task as much as I thought I might - I was even looking forward to it, seeing all our familiar and much loved things come out of the bubble wrap and newspaper. I had it all planned out in my head: the toaster next to the bread bin, the kettle near the mugs and tap, the pans by the cooker. But I felt like I was playing a game with the boxes and cupboards. Will it fit here? No. Here? Yes, but only if I move all of this...and there are all these boxes still to unpack! It was like a big rubik's cube of crockery and cardboard, and there was always a box right in front of the cupboard I needed to get to.

But then, one the second day (yes, this was a two day job), it all clicked into place. Order prevailed over chaos and I was so pleased by the neatness of it all that I took a photo of a cupboard on my phone. Just look at those beautiful, tidy stacks of plates!

The dishwasher is plumbed in, the leak under the sink has been fixed (thanks Dad) and everything is on and in and working. I've wiped, scrubbed, mopped and polished this little room and - this I did not expect! - I'm growing rather fond of it.

In our house in Leeds, the kitchen looked directly into my neighbour's kitchen, and I couldn't see the garden. Here, the window looks out over the garden and the room is full of light all day long. I can watch the kids play outside. What a difference things like this make.

There is no budget for a new kitchen for now - and honestly, it's a perfectly fine kitchen, if badly fitted - but there are little things we can do to make it more efficient. A rail near the cooker, from which I can hang all my utensils, would be useful.

Plus some hooks on the back of the door for aprons, and we need a bin.

We moved in yesterday and those jars are now full of pasta and rice, ready to use.

I feel a teeny bit possessive of my, I mean our, kitchen. I've been in it on my own all week, making it mine, getting to know it. I don't want anyone to make a mess in there. I scrubbed that sink, I mean really scrubbed it, and it gleams. I dont want it to get dirty! I need to get over this, or I'll be doing all the cooking and washing up on my own for the next twenty years.

*

A few lovely things happened lately which I forgot to mention. I've had three really nice coffees (lady dates, as I like to think of them) with friends I've made through this online world. I am missing my Leeds friends a great deal and, while I've started to make tentative friends at the school gate and on the PTA, these things take time and so it's wonderful to have already formed relationships with people I "know" through blogging or Instagram. A couple of weeks ago I met up with Jo; we connected through Instagram and share many things in common, and realised that we actually live about a mile away from each other! What are the chances of that? And I had a very nice morning in Chichester with Caroline and then a few days later in Arundel with Sara. With both it was like meeting up someone you already knew, and we chatted for ages about all sorts of things - children, education, blogging. Interesting, funny, intelligent ladies, all of them. Good eggs. And I hope soon to be meeting up with Chrissie and maybe even Jooles too - that would be amazing. Chatting about craft over coffee and cake - I don't think it gets much better than that.

We are now finally in our new house, surrounded by boxes. While the kitchen may look tidy, rest assured that the rest of the house is chaos. And unfortunately we won't have any broadband for the next two weeks. Agh!! This is going to be a huge test for me, for all of us. I hope I will read and crochet and spend amazing quality time with the children...hmm. We'll see. Which means blogging and emailing (and also really necessary things like internet banking!) will be challenging and so I may not be around much over the next few weeks. But don't worry, I'm not going any where. If anything, I feel like I've just come back home.

  3. Ha ha , you know you have to many mugs in that cupboard . ( and too many plates) Seriously the kitchen is lovely. You must be so pleased to have done this move in a relatively short time. Its such a big thing when the move means new jobs as well. I' m sure you a looking forward to summer in your new house and garden. In my 66 years I've moved house 12 times!

  4. I'm so happy for you, Gillian! It's looking wonderful. I think you have a very nice kitchen. Mine isn't perfect either but it's very good and I've made it my own. I know you'll do the same. The kitchen has always been my favorite place to get into shape after a move. I know just how you feel. Glad to hear about the blogger meetups! How nice. I wish there were more bloggers around here. I'll just have to come over there and hang out with all of you. :)

  5. It is all happening isn't it. I would love that kind of kitchen job. I am still bit possessive about where the colander goes after our kitchen extension 3 years ago!! Glad you are making friends too that is exciting. Keep the momentum going. Jo x

  6. Maybe a couple of stainless steel or wooden shelves where the pansy pic would be useful?

  8. It is a challenge to move and unpack all the clobber one gathers over a life time and yet when it is all done the new house has the feeling of home because of the belongings that signify each member of the family.
How lovely for you to have a wonderful home and meeting new friends that you already know in some manner. Joy to you and yours!

  10. Well I think it's looking rather lovely indeed! I know what you mean, my kitchen wasn't as enjoyable to unpack as I was expecting, but give it a week when you come downstairs and theres sunshine streaming through the windows and everything looks tidy and shiny...it'll be bliss! ;) Katie x

  11. Well done! The kitchen looks great. Moving is a real challenge, like you, we moved away from all our friends, in search of a new life in the country. We've been at our place three months and I still have boxes to unpack. I also did my kitchen first, its the most essential job, or no one eats!!

  12. Welcome Home, Gillian! You are making great progress on all fronts it seems to me. It is especially nice to know you are making new friends and are meeting up with some blogging friends, too, which you know I like to do as well :-) I will be cheering you on during your broadband challenge for the next two weeks as you continue to settle in. xx

  13. Ooh, I do love a bit of organizing too! Happy to read that you're settling in and finding your feet in your new home. Take each day as it presents itself and slowly but surely, things and people will become more familiar. I always feel moving to a new place and having to start all over again making new friends, is like the dating game - it can be hard, but will be rewarding too. You will always miss your lovely old friends, but new friendships are exciting and fun too. Glad you've been able to meet up with some IG & bloggy pals already too. Happy first weekend in your new home! Hugs, Gilly xx

  14. Aren't kitchens a complete bugger to pack and unpack? 18 months on and I'm still fiddling with cupboard arrangements - do we really need that panini maker? Apparently so according to husband. Oh well we'll get there eventually.

Great to see Orla making an appearance - really looking great :-)

  16. I am so pleased you are settling in well. I envy you the kitchen window overlooking the garden, such a treat to be able to watch the children and enjoy the garden while you work.
I can understand the kitchen taking 2 days, I have to have everything just like you, glasses near the sink, baking bits near the oven, pans near the hob etc!
I'm sure the next few weeks will fly by and you will soon be back in blogland, just don't get too used to not being about!! I am so glad you are making new friends, meeting some blog friends and getting settled in. Take care x

  24. Your new kitchen looks amazing! I wouldn't mind to do the dishes if I had a gorgeous window to stare out of like yours. It looks so cozy and homey already. I love your white cabinets! I wish my blog friends (like yourself) lived close by so we could meet up in person... that would be so awesome!

  27. Hooray!! You're in the new house, the kitchen already looks near perfect to me, and the rest of the house will follow at its own pace in its own time. Even just watching from the distance through your blog, I find this very exciting - minus the tiring hard work, of course ;-)

  28. Wow that is wonderful that you have now moved into your new home, so exciting. It's good to take your time look around and start feeling the house as your own. We have moved in to our new house 9 month ago and we still have boxes in some rooms ( the kid' s TV/ craft room) and we still have a lot, I mean a lot, of work to do in the garage... But it's a fun process... Enjoy the journey my dear friend.

  29. Oh the joy of a well planned kitchen. I had a tiny baby when we moved in to our home and my mum and MIL did the kitchen. It has taken me 8 years to get used to where everything is!

  30. I think the kitchen is the worst room to fill, we all have so many bits and bobs and it takes a while to find the right place for them in a new home. But, you seem to have done that so all you have to do now is enjoy your new home to the full.

  34. Thank you so much for the 'mug' shot! I think that's a very good amount of mugs to have. I've been feeling a little guilty about the desire to make a bit more space for my mugs. Only a shelf and a half is given over to them at the moment and now I don't need to feel guilty any more! ;) And I can also feel complete justification in buying another mug, something I've been dying to do!! The kitchen is looking very good indeed and you are right, it's not a bad little kitchen at all. Some of the ones I've seen while house hunting (on Right move only, nothing serious), are scary!

  38. Ah!!! It's starting to look like home. OK, you'll be on the quiet side for a week or two, but we'll still be here, waiting to see what comes next. Have a lovely crafty break, breathe as much as you can and enjoy the family, but don't overdo the unpacking. It will always be there for the next day. Take care.

  39. I'm playing catch up......again! Absolutely love your new home, and all the amazing retro colours you have chosen. And glad to see I'm not the only one who loves a mug or two. xo

  40. My father in law looked at our mugs once and said that all we needed was one cup, one plate and one bowl each, anything else was an extravagance. Pah, what does he know!! You can't beat choosing the most beautiful mug to drink your tea or coffee from.
Your kitchen looks great and I am envious of all that cupboard space xx

  41. So lovely and calm and ordered! My house never looks like that. And I agree it's very important to have a wide selection of mugs so you can always match the right one to the person / occasion (morning coffee for me obviously requires completely different mug to tea in bed for my daughter).

  43. To Mad About Craft: I don't think you'd get a shelf there, because you'd never open the cupboard door which would be at right angles to it.
But this is a lovely kitchen. Is there a larder?

Love the progress on your new house! We may have found a beautiful property with view over the lake where we can build ours. This will take a few more years, but having a nice property is the first step! :)

  51. Hi, I really feel for your struggles with kitchen cupboards/boxes as we were in the same situation almost exactly a year ago, moving from a large 1930s house into a small 1800s cottage in West Sussex (not too far from you, I think!) - I'm still tweaking the cupboard arrangements and my family complain every time I change things round again! Thank you also for the links to your new local friends' blogs. I have a similar problem - having moved I really missed my old crafting friends, so I started a knit and natter/crochet and chat group in my local coffee shop a couple of months ago to try and make some new ones. Early days but I've met some lovely ladies!
