Green, Pink, Black & White

Are the colours I am currently obsessed with. I can't get enough of that green!

John likes it. The other people who've seen it (my family and the electrician and the gasman) say things like "Wow, that's bright!" or "Hmm. I'm sure you'll make it look lovely..." Bella simply said "Mum, that's hideous.I'm understandably a little defensive about my colour choice.

The room we've painted this shade is the porch, and it's only on the one wall. I know, it's not an essential project in an essential room, but I just wanted to do something fun. I couldn't have this colour in a room we were in all the time, but our new house has a porch/lobby/vestibule which is about 2 metres by 2 metres and it's such a luxury to me! We've never had a porch before. I would've killed for this space when the kids were small and I needed somewhere to put the pram or pushchair.

The front door opens into a tiled area and then you have an internal front door and glass wall, filled with swirly frosted glass, which leads into the hall. This space will eventually have coat hooks, a shoe rack, a stool - practical things, but pretty too. The light and glass make it feel a bit like a conservatory so I think I was channeling a kind of greenhouse theme here, with wellies neatly lined up against the wall and flowers in a jug. That big green wall will be filled with photos and prints in white frames, so that only a small amount of the colour will be visible.

But my impatient creative mind starting clunking and whirring away and an idea for a possible stool cover emerged. My first project for our new home! Happily, I had the exact shades already in my cotton yarn stash - it's like it was meant to be, see?

I'll write more about the stool cover another day as I want to make another in different colours and remember to take photos during the process.

Here is a glimpse of how it looks so far:

It's almost finished, with the just ends to darn in and the whole thing will be straightened up nicely when I attach it properly to the stool.

I think these colours are my response to spring and the fact that I'm not doing my usual spring-ish things. I'm not buying daffodils or tulips and filling vases with them, there are no bulbs coming up in our new garden apart from four crocuses hiding under a tree in the front. I miss faffing around with arrangements on my mantel. I've been so focused on painting, painting, painting, lists, deadlines, more lists, that I think I forgot there was a season going on around me outside.

Tomorrow I'm going to buy a bunch of daffodils.

Have a great weekend.

  2. I think the green is lovely, as is the stool cover. I'd love a porch too - somewhere to keep the boots and coats that seem to take over the hall. Maybe a little stack of logs too, so we don't have to go outside when we're running low - a girl can dream! Have a great weekend. x

  3. The entryway is going to be brilliant, a greenhouse feel is a lovely idea. The black and white reminds me of the tiles you see on the floors of old conservatories and orangeries. Wonderful. The stool cover is perfect, and beautifully stitched. How nice to be making things for your new home. Enjoy the weekend Gillian. CJ xx

  4. Love!!! I have A Thing for pink and green, always have. The porch sounds great, I would have loved it for a stroller back in the day too. I'm just happy to have a real, honest-to-goodness foyer in this house, the first one ever. It's wonderful to enter the house and not immediately be in the thick of everything.

  10. It wouldn't be my choice of colours, but it does look good!
Actually, I have a neckholder sun dress with a Sixties-style geometric print in exactly that shade of green and white...

  11. Good for you, a brave colour choice which looks great. And it makes an announcement too. Visitors will step in and know it's no ordinary home - it's a bright, creative one.
I'm still buying daffodils every week. Such a guilt-free treat...
Have a lovely weekend. Hope you get the chance to enjoy the outdoors a bit.

  12. I really like your colours !! Only one possible remark : they are quite seasonal... If you use the colours to paint, will you also love them in winter ? Because repainting every season can be quite expensive... And a lot of work...

  16. I am not very courageous when it comes to choosing colours for the home....I always go for neutrals as I find them soothing and cosy even though they may seem a bit boring to other people....I usually add the colour in the accessories.... When it comes to clothes..however.......I am much more bold and I would definitely choose that green to wear.....it would look great as a gingham colour mixed with white....I would use it for a summer dress or skirt...... Look forward to seeing how your house comes together...I think your colour palette is going to be very appropriate for the house age..... I love how you based yourself in Orla Kiely's Classic design.....my favourite of hers..... have a lovely weekend, Pati xxx

  17. Oh, this is exciting! That stool with that green wall is going to look so cool! I can picture the little room, as you describe it - it's going to be great! Sometimes I find little 'non-rooms' easier to do, as you can let your imagination go wild (as you say, people don't have to live with it all the time) and also it's a smaller place to handle - less daunting. Can't wait to see it come to life!

  18. When I saw the colour swatches I really wasn't sure about the green and I was secretly cheering Bella on (why is girls as they get older state their opinions so indelicately??!!) Then I saw the wall and thought, hmm, actually that's not bad, then I saw the yarn and fell in love!! The stool cover is amazing, I Love the colours together and I love them with the green!! I think I need to start getting bolder in my colour choices (and ignore teenage daughter comments!). Sharon x

  19. D'you know, I was married in 1964 and I don't recall these bright colours in the 1970s being used in homes, only in magazine spreads! Our sitting room in the 1970s had pale cream walls, dupion curtains in a sort of pale caramel and a lovely carpet in shades of green and cream - yes, it was patterned, but it was the only pattern in the room and it was very elegant. In the 1960s we had pale dove grey walls with a gold Wilton carpet and blue/green curtains - this sounds vile but in fact, it looked very smart. I think, though, because we've had more experience of various shades of colours now, as colour charts were very limiting in the 1960s and 1970s, we are better at putting colours together and your choice of here of pink, green black and white is excellent. But try as I might, I don't recall any houses of friends or anyone I knew painting in the colours which today are being marketed as 'retro' ... or maybe I just didn't know the right people!

  22. What a fantastic colour. I love green, and I think it will be a very welcoming porch. I like bold colour choices too. One wall of our kitchen is painted a deep purple colour and everyone thought it would look hideous, but in knew it would look fab- and it does! X

  23. What a cheery greeting all you guests will have. I'd love to be braver with colour, though saying that, I had painted a very small wall black once, hung a white framed mirror and had a white and black wall paper on the wall opposite. That was in my early twenties, a long time ago. O'm enjoying following your adventures with your new home. Take care.

  24. I can see that green picture-hung wall in my minds eye, and honestly I think if I'd seen it elsewhere it's exactly the kind of thing I'd describe as 'Gillian's style' ... bold, a little quirky and a lot cheerful.

  25. I was married in 1967 and I'm in agreement with Galant . I did have friends who were buying G-plan and Danish teak furniture but the colours for decorating the lounge were avocado or orange (only one wall)or one wall wallpapered. The rest were either white or magnolia. Some colours that we now see advertised as"retro" just weren't available. Then Berger bought out their paintmaster mixer. Anyone remember that?
You could have any shade mixed .I had one called Tobacco, yuk. It looked good with cream walls opposite though. Lol.

  26. I love that green. Decoration in our house is a constant compromise between my love of colour and husbands love of 'calm' neutrals - we compromise with one wall of colour and three walls of magnolia.

  27. Oh that will look brilliant! Can't wait to see pics of the finished house!

  32. "Vestibule"! That word takes me right back to my childhood in1959 when we moved into a brand-new house, which had exactly the kind of porch you describe and my mother always called it the vestibule. Ours had fluted glass rather than patterns and was never used for coats or boots. It was just liminal space between the outside and the inside, with a table and a plant in a pot. Until this moment I have never really given it any thought.

  33. I would worry if many people showed me that colour and told me it was for a wall but I don't doubt you can make it work wonderfully. Although I'm scarred by the neon green bathroom in our first house! A tiny room with no natural light, in the most hideous BP green shade! Yours already looks much better. And the stool cover is fabulous, I want one of those stools just so I an make a cover. Don't know where it will go though!

  35. Hope you got your big bunch of daffodils. You deserve it with all these hard work decorating and painting. This green looks bright to me, but in a nice and cheerful way. I wouldn't mind having it in the hall or porch either. X

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
