Progress

Progress on the house move. Over the weekend we hired a van and emptied one attic and two garages and filled our new house, which suddenly shrunk and seemed very full. It's all chaos, of course, but we are very fortunate to be able to stay with my parents for just a few more days so that we can unpack a little before actually moving in properly. Nearly there, though, nearly!

Progress in the seasons.

Look at this tree! It's in our garden! This made me rather excited and I spend a lot of time gazing at it from the windows at the back of the house. We think it's a cherry tree. I desperately want it to be cherry so I can make my own jam with the fruit (although it's quite high so how I'll get to the fruit is anyone's guess).

Progress with decorating.

In the end we managed to get the dining room painted too, as well as three bedrooms, the living room (that massive high ceiling, agh!!), the spare room and the upstairs loo. I have never, ever, done so much decorating in my life.

I realise this is a really boring photo (and that wall light is going) but I can't tell you how happy I was to get our dining chairs out of storage. I love these chairs. The first four white ones were a housewarming present in our old house, nine years ago, then we saved hard and added the yellow and blue one. We have a new (to us) dining table, a round sixties G-plan one, and I can't wait to see how it all looks together.

Progress in the kitchen, which is clean, free of paintbrushes, and awaiting the arrival of a dishwasher tomorrow. As you can see it's small and for some reason the previous owners thought tiling every single wall would be a good idea, but it has a nice big window and a good amount of cupboard and worktop space.

Progress in the garage. That huge box contains a tall, dark, handsome Danish stove, which will be fitted this week. I hope we get to light it once before it gets to warm.

This is how the garage looked after all our stuff arrived. Not so tidy, and kind of like we've been there for years. The wheelbarrow is full because my mum was itching to tackle some overgrown flowerbeds. Nothing annoys my mum like a messy garden; the satisfaction she gets from sorting something out is phenomenal, and it must all be done straight away, and yes, I certainly inherited my impatience from her. That is my dressing table sat in the middle there, because I intend to do something with it. Sand it. Paint it maybe.

And while my parents gardened, John and I assembled beds.

Progress in the green porch, which I'm still having to justify to everyone who sees it. Mum and I built a shoe rack.

I like the watery ripples the glass made on the wall.

I think that's one of the things I'm most looking forward to, seeing where the light falls around the house at different times of the day. Things you only notice when you live somewhere.

  1. I love seeing the progress you are making, keep the photos coming!! How nice to move in slowly, we moved about five years ago, 10 days before Christmas. It was cold, messy and really stressful. Sarah

  2. Well I love your green porch!! No need to justify it to me at all!!! It looks as though you are making great progress with everything. Our house is about 10 years older than yours I would guess and our kitchen was tiled everywhere as well - and the bathroom - it must have been a fashion some years ago I think. Our downstairs loo and the cupboard (I call in the laundry!) where the washer and dryer live are both tiled floor to ceiling as well. I hope that you are very happy in your new home and I look forward to many more tales from your new happy home! xx

  5. I'm so happy for you. I definitely see tons of progress there. I hope you're all settled in very soon. I, too, would be stopping to admire the watery pattern on the wall. I love that kind of thing. :)

  7. Green is my favourite colour. With white picture frames up it would be a really nice background that makes them pop

  8. It's all looking wonderful - and I love the look of your green porch and the way the light falls. Looks like you might be needing that stove later this week to keep warm! :) x

  10. You have been working hard, it's all starting to come together. I love your chairs, with the blue and yellow ones amongst the white. I'd be helping your mum with the flowerbeds if I was there I think. Not that my garden is immaculate or anything, very far from it, but a little gardening makes me happy. The stove is going to be wonderful. I hope the moving in goes well, it will be a thrill to wake up there, and it's so nice that you've been able to do so much work before you actually brought your things there. I shall look forward to hearing that you're in. Have a good week Gillian. CJ xx

  13. I am so excited for you and what fab progress you are making. Do ask you Mum if she fancies a wee holiday in Scotland if she likes sorting out troublesome gardens....!

  14. Oh! You are so close to being "settled". Once you are living there you can start enjoying and understanding the nuances of your new home. I'm sure you grow to love it more and more everyday!

  15. Everything seems to be coming along nicely, Gillian! Your kitchen is just amazing! Wow, the big window with all that natural light is gorgeous. And I love the blue and green walls. I can't wait to see your new home all decorated and styled. I now it's going to look amazing!

  16. It's all coming together beautifully! Love the green porch! When we bought our place a few years ago one of the most exciting things was seeing the garden come to life in spring. All sorts of treasures popped out! X

  17. Well done - you have worked really hard. Can I invite your Mum round to our garden?! Love the green porch too. x

  18. That last picture is great - it looks like something underwater!
How exciting to arrive at the house at this time of the year, when the cherry (?) tree is in full bloom! The cherry tree in front of my kitchen window looks different, it has white blossoms but they will only appear in about 2 months' time.

  19. Wow, it's coming along apace now. Very exciting all round.
I hope the cherry tree does bear you fruit. Ours never gave us more than a handful of cherries!

  20. Hi there. I'm really enjoying your progress and wondering how big your garden is this time. I think that your cherry is probably just the ornamental type. Seems like this house is a bit bigger than your last with more bedrooms, so the kids can have their own. Thanks for the updates and take care.

  22. Not a big fan of Green but am sure it works in the lobby. I still love the blue though and when we actually move will be using it myself. Must be such a relief to be nearly there.

  24. Hey Gillian,
I'm sure that you are absolutely pooped at the moment, but it's all looking rather good so far. I shall be watching the wood burner with interest. I am trying to persuade Marc to re-instate our fireplace (currently behind the bookcase). He is not amenable. I like the green very much. And I love your Mum and her passion for order.

  26. Such progress Gillian! Your arm must be ready for dropping off. It all looks fabulous, I can't tell you how much I love that green and how Andy would certainly frown upon it if I chose it so I am pretending that is my hallway and I did it without tutting going on in the background! Jo x

  27. It's such an exciting time - and watching everything come to life in the garden and discovering what's there just adds to all the fun doesn't it ?
    Have a good week Gillian,

  29. I love the green and that photo! Won't be long now. Xx

  30. I'm excited with you, and exhausted with you, and if I'm honest rather envious, particularly of your stove. And your green wall has grown on me. Good luck on moving day :)

  31. That's great progress, Gillian and it seems that things are starting to fit into place nicely, aren't they? I love your chairs, are they called Eames? My mum and dad are decorating a new house and she's struggling to find chairs for the kitchen to go with a white Scandinavian style oval table. The stove looks great too.... I'm excited for you! Have a lovely weekend! Pati x

  37. I love your updates and I absolutely love your chairs! What is it with tiling everywhere? They did that in our last house, even the hall walls were tiled. However, your hall looks fab! It's a beautiful emerald. I'd make the most of having any help with the garden ha! Can't wait to see more x

  38. Your new home is certainly all coming together now. Love seeing the update photos. What a luxury being able to stay with your parents while getting everything sorted although I imagine it will be great to be in your own home again. xx

  39. Wow you are amazing, moving and painting all in one go is a mean feat. I painted one room last week at our new place and now have a dodgy back shoulder. You have inspired me though, I must keep going as I too am impatient and don't like things dragging on. Love your dining chairs, I've always wanted some like that.

  40. So much potential in your new house! I'm dying over your new wood stove. I clicked the link and have ordered myself one of their brochures. We're considering getting one (really, I'm trying to convince my husband we need one) and I love the one you chose. I can't wait to see it all set up! I love a tiny kitchen with a lot of light. Mine looks onto the backyard too. So nice for keeping an eye on the kids and/or gazing at flowers. Looking forward to seeing your house more as it continues to come together!

  41. Oh my gosh, I can totally identify with tiled walls. The house we currently rent has tiled walls all over the ENTIRE kitchen, guest loo (why???) and family bathroom. Literally from the floor to the (high) ceiling. Aaargh. And did I mention all the tiled floors? Nothing against tiles but these particular ones are hideous. x

    1. Hi there.

We bought it from a website called firesonline.co.uk. They were the cheapest then but it was a year ago!

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
