Not Yet

I wanted to thank you for you recent comments here as they have been particularly wonderful; interesting, helpful and informative. You are all brilliant. Many of you reminded me about the Pencil Museum in Keswick when I wrote about the pencils we recently found in the garage. Yes, I am sure they would be able to date them for me (and I remembered that Derwent pencils are after all made in Cumbria). I may email them to try to find out when they were made - when I get round to it - but for now I'm happy just to have them to be honest. And what fabulous suggestions you gave me for my leaf skeleton dilemma! Some suggested just keeping them temporarily in a glass or white bowl, or under a glass dome, until they reached a point where they needed to go back into the garden. For preservation, someone suggested a light coat of spray varnish to help protect them, and then hinged glass frames, box frames and a small glass box were offered as ways to display them long term. I don't think they'd survive pressing - they were too brittle - so box frames or similar are the way forward I think. A couple of you said I should frame my photos, which had not occurred to me at all. I print and frame photos I've taken of people, mainly the children, but I'd never thought to print out any photos otherwise. It might be fun to make some cards or something. I played around with them on picmonkey, just for fun:

Anyway, in the end, they were just so brittle that they were practically disintegrating before my eyes, so I had to dispose of them the day after taking those photos. I don't think coming from a damp garden into a warm, dry house did them much good.

Thanks for the chair love, too. Yes, on the IKEA website, the chair is only listed as being available in grey, orange or blue, no idea why. I loved the grey but we have a dark grey sofa and felt it might be too much gloom. I'm so glad you all like her as much as I do! She's still there, still lovely. Not that I've had a chance to sit on her today...

I'd planned a springy post for this weekend, in as much as I ever really plan a post. There are always ideas simmering away in my head but it doesn't usually come together until I sit down in front of the laptop. I'd been thinking sunshine, pastels and flowers. In typical March fashion I've been pottering inside and out, sorting and rearranging. I found another use for my broken Emma Bridgewater mugs. Is it me or do these mugs break really easily? I put mine in the dishwasher but I'm pretty sure they are dishwasher proof. I must have about six where the handles have cracked and then come away. At nearly £20 a mug they're not cheap, though are they? Very annoying. Anyway, they make excellent, if expensive, pen pots.

I've been buying hyacinths and daffodils like they're going out of fashion. Love 'em. I think spring flowers are my favourite. I'm not bored of them though, not yet. Give me a couple more weeks.

I bought this lovely new pink cushion in IKEA from their brakig collection. I can't find a link to it but it was only £5 so I bought a blue one too. They go on the "kid's " sofa, where they will get covered in sticky fingerprints and crumbs and go in the washing machine constantly.

I've been hailing the milder temperatures this week with less soups, more salad.  I think radishes might win a prize for being the prettiest vegetable.

My new favourite thing for lunch is a boursin and radish open sandwich. So, so good. The combination of creaminess and crunch is divine. Very garlicky though. John complained.

But then, the thing is, IT'S NOT SPRING YET! No! It's bloody freezing. Every year I forget, Yorkshire springs are late and cold. I forgot. I was seduced by the sun, the daffodils, the 16°c temperatures. Yesterday the weather swiftly turned and a stinging, raw wind blew in. I wore my ski jacket to pick up the kids from school. Their faces were pinched and rosy from the cold and we had hot chocolate when we got home. My head is half in winter, half in spring while I finish this winter embroidery. Do you remember the autumn themed embroidery I did last year? I want to make one for each season, and I've been working on this lately. I have to finish it soon, as I'm already wanting it over so I can begin the spring one, which will contain lots more colour.

And so I do declare that spring is very nearly here, but not just yet.

  1. Dear Gillian
A lovely colourful post - very cheerful (even if it is still winter!) Your embroidery is looking lovely and I look forward to seeing it when it is finished.
Enjoy the sunshine (Spring is just round the corner!)
    Best wishes

  3. A lovely post to read. You're right spring is on it's way but only just. The sun is bright, the wind is chilly and the mornings are brrrrrr!
Yet, we find the shorts and flip flop brigade are out, while I'm still in coat and scarf mode.

  4. The weather was just the same here yesterday. In late afternoon, I realized the wind had come up so much I needed to go outside and lock the gate before it blew open. The temperature must have been 20 degrees lower than it had been when I came home at lunchtime. Then there was a big clap of thunder and it rained the rest of the night. I would enjoy your sandwich, and would not complain about the garlic. I don't think I've ever felt anything had too much garlic. :)

  5. It feels like Spring during the day here - it has been pleasantly warm, but as soon as the sun disappears, it's bitter. I think we've had more frosts in the last few days than we've had all winter. Have a great weekend. x

  6. lovely post, I love your handless-mug pen holders! thank you for your lovely comments on my socks! If I can knit socks, you can!

  7. We've had lovely weather in Wales-usually, our Spring time tends to be very wet with short sunshine but thankfully, we avoided the worst of the bad weather and now we've had some lovely blue skies and sunshine :-) Yes, still on the chilly side but there's definite promise in the air x

  8. Really lovely Spring post, Gillian! I love how you have some sort of fresh flowers in almost every room. They are all gorgeous! I love the simple vases on your dining table, and the purple iris and yellow tulip combination is so pretty. I really love the wall of bookcases in your dining room. It gives the space such a nice, cozy feel. Enjoy your weekend!

  9. The poor little leaf skeletons, disintegrating into dust, You have beautiful photos of them that really should be hung up. Love your chair from your last post. Hope Spring settles in quickly for you.
    Hugs,

  10. All that lovely sunshine and mild weather we've had this week had me thinking 'spring is here!' too. But then it got cold and so windy last night I realized we're just not there yet. Hopefully we don't have long to wait before spring is really, truly here. Love all the colours in the photos--you have such a lovely home!! I can't wait to see your finished embroidery and yes, I'd be a bit beoken hearted too if I had one of those Emma Bridgewater mugs and it gets broken. It's good you're 'recycling' them, they're too lovely to throw away.

  11. Love that collection of photos and it does remind me of spring. We are having very changeable weather too, as autumn approaches. Thank you also for taking on board some of the bloggers suggestions for your leaves and hope I helped with the pencils. Your embroidery is looking lovely. Take care and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

  12. That's so unlucky to have so many Emma mugs break on you, we dishwash ours and apart from dropping one all are currently intact.

  13. Lovely photos, your embroidery is looking gorgeous. I really want to give it a go myself this year - have bought a hoop but that's as far as I've got :-) And I bought that Ikea cushion in yellow, for the bench in the kids' playroom. Hasn't been spilt on yet, but there's always tomorrow!

  14. Lovely post. I think the sun and mild weather has fooled many of us in to thinking spring was here but you are right it is still too cold here in Yorkshire! Xxx

  15. Yes, it hasn't been as mild as the weather people promised and I've still been scraping the frost off the car. On the other hand, my first tulip of the year is about to flower in the garden - so exciting! Love the photo of the radish - makes me want to go out and buy some just so I can admire a bowlful of them too. :)

  16. Beautiful photos. It has been cold hasn't it, but I have high hopes for tomorrow. Those radishes look delicious. I wonder if it's too soon to sow some. Have you tried the black pepper Boursin? Really good. The embroidery looks brilliant. Very pale and wintry, my favourite kinds of colours. And bare trees against the sky are my winter obsession. I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend Gillian. CJ xx

  17. Great cheery post - love your photos what a shame about your EB mugs - have you complained to them??? Your lunch looks very healthy xx

  18. That's a good use for the broken mugs but how disappointing that they are breaking so easily. I dishwasher mine without problems. The winter embroidery is looking great so far, I'll look forward to seeing the finished piece, and then the spring one. I love the flower display on your table - very effective to have a few stems split between three bottles.

  19. Such a lovely load of colour this post Gillian, very uplifting and bright, thank you!
If those beautiful mugs were mine I really would be enquiring of the manufacturer why the handles keep breaking - it is possible that they were part of a 'faulty' batch - it certainly raises my suspicions that something is not right there! 'Faulty' does happen from time to time!
Your spring flowers are gorgeous - the radishes do look so pretty - your embroidery is very sweet and lovely, everything 'spot on', and I've enjoyed every bit of it, thanks so much! Do have a wonderful weekend! Joy xo

  20. Such a lovely bright colourful post. I think the photographs of your leaf skeletons are just perfect. However it,s the colours of your flowers and radishes and everything that just shout spring to me. Treating myself to flowers will be the one indulgence I shall make time for when I return back to the UK, we don't get any here and if we do they are incredibly expensive as they are imported from China or Europe. So I shall take pleasure in looking at your pictures:)

  21. The shifting of the seasons is exciting, isn't it Gillian. Our daffodils are all in bloom so I just slung on a sweater to go out and about only to find myself shivering and melting frost off the windshield before I could see to drive the other morning :) Your combination of photos, colors, and your recipe idea delights me. Thanks! xx

  22. Fab cushions - I can't believe the price. I feel Ikea calling me as I've been madly pinning cushions (most of which are very expensive). I wonder is cushion lusting a spring thing too? Love your flower photos. Happy Sunday xo

  23. What a collection of fun, bright and beautiful things. I really love this beautiful embroidery... So peaceful. I'm not very patient fir embroidering, but I have to say I just love the look. We too had a couple of sunny days this last week and all wwe can think about is being outside and enjoying the sun in our skin. Today a was cold again and tomorrow promises rain, but I will take it even one sunny day a week... I just love it.

  24. You'r right about the Yorkshire Spring being late. Seduced by the sunshine but there's a very nippy wind that catches you unaware. love the use you've made of the broken mugs.
    Have a lovely Sunday.

  25. You are right about being seduced by the sunshine, it is rather wonderful isn't but it is still so cold!

Your post is wonderfully spring like a riot of colour......perfect!

  26. You can feel spring though! Even though the wind yesterday was biting. Love the photos (though not the taste of radishes I'm afraid. I wish we lived near an IKEA those cushions are so fresh and cheery. Have a lovely week. Xxx

  27. A lovely and colourful post and I think framing those pictures are a great idea. What is it with Emma bridgewater mugs, they all break in exactly the same way. Enjoy the change over to spring and I'm looking forward to seeing your embroidery!! Xoxo

  28. So much gorgeousness in this post I don't know where to start, your photos are just stunning. I find that CK mugs chip and break easily too and I am glad you have posted this as I was looking at Emma Bridgewater mugs to replace them but I think I will stay away. I think you should use all your photos for cards. I would buy any of them x

  29. No, spring is definitely not here in full bloom yet! I checked on our primroses yesterday and they are just starting to green up. They are always the first plant to bloom in my garden, and they get bigger every year - I love them! My little babe and I went to the playground yesterday and she could barely walk it was so blustery! So glad I had the puffy parka on!

  30. No not yet. I'm a bit thrown when I have to wear something other than my jeans and boots! I do like spring, but I don't seem to have many spring like clothes! I like the sound of Boursin and radish. I need some more food inspiration too! enjoy the sun, Heather x

  31. It's the same in Skipton, so many signs of Spring being on it's way, but this past week it's been foggy, damp and freezing cold. We lit the fire again last night after weeks without it, and enjoyed it's comforting warmth. Don't think it's ever really Spring in Yorkshire until April is well under way, but do oddly like the teetering feeling!x

  32. Gorgeous photos Gillian - I love that Ikea cushion. In fact, loving a lot of goodies in your home. Every picture is a feast for my eyes :-) By the way, I like to use chipped mugs for plants. Have you thought about popping into the shop to ask about the mugs? Seems an awful shame to spend so much money and then have them break. x

  33. Lovely post! It made me feel some hope that spring can't be far away. I really like your fall embroidery. I'm going to check out that issue of Molly Makes.

  35. The mugs look lovely : I use golden syrup tins for my pens. I have had a number of bridgewater mugs for years but no broken handles - no dishwasher so hand washed. Lovely blog.

  36. Beautiful photos, all the lovely colours.

  37. Once again the photos are beautiful Gillian. The colours are so crisp...that spring light really is in the air. Being a Southerner (although having lived in Yorkshire for more than half my life since coming up this way for Uni) I too know that Yorkshire Springs come later than you think. I nearly got overexcited buying some plants for the garden but that strong chilled wind we had yesterday reminded me not to...well not just yet!
I think your pen pots are an ingenious use for the (sadly) handleless Emma Bridgwater mugs. I'm hoping my EB mug (they are such a good shape for your hand...or is that just me?) survives the dishwasher!! Loving the embroidery. Can't wait to see your ideas for Spring...and Summer...x

  38. My neighbor once had an over abundance of radishes and gave me a big sack of them. What to do? Well, I roasted them in the oven and then tossed them in balsamic vinegar. Easy and yummy.

  39. You have made me smile from start to finish with this post! So many pretty - yet functional - things in your house, from easy-clean gorgeous cushions to posh pen pots! I still need my hot water bottle at bedtime, though I'm in short sleeves in the garden in the afternoon - that's British spring for ya! And I simply LOVE your embroidery, you clever lady! Can't wait to see it finished, Chrissie x

  40. So many lovely things and so much that I could say! However, I will only say a little!! Love your new embroidery, it is very pretty and will look great with your other one. Such a shame about your mugs though that they break so easily. I don't have any of these and sadly this has made me nervous of them! My CK ones go in and out of the dishwasher all the time and they are standing up the use very well, so if you decide to go for something else I can recommend them! Hope that you have a good week. xx

  41. Lots of lovely things in your post! Love those Ikea cushions, they are an amazing price for such good designs. As always I guess. I had a couple of EB mugs and within a few months one of the handles broke too - the other one survives intact thankfully.
Sweet embroidery, and i love all your flower photos, and those skeleton leaves look amazing!
Thanks for a great post full of pretty things!

  42. What a rich post. I love all those colors... Wonderful and yes they are calling for Spring. We have been pretty lucky weather wise recently. Mornings are still chilly but we go as high as 20 during the afternoons!
I have Bridgewater mugs and none of them broke, may be you should contact them, it could be that there was a defect with the ones you got, couldn't it?
I love the embroidery you're making. Can't wait to see it finish and can't wait to see the series.

  43. Beautiful post as always! You make me smile. I have also had a treasured cup broken this weekend one from Cirque de Soliel. very warm down here at the weekend. was lambing fri/sat/sun in a boiler suit and only undies under it! lol normally you have to wear jeans and a jumper the boiler suit and a hat and scarf.

  44. Ooh yes, chilly here, too, but beautifully bright! Your photos are so cheery and colourful, and honestly lifted my spirits and inspiration yesterday. I am a 'lurker', as such, but vow to comment more - thankyou for your words and pictures!

  45. It may be winter outside (3 more inches of snow again for us!), but it is spring-y and cheery and full of color inside! I am so loving the daffodils right now. Your embroidery is lovely, and I love the idea of having one for each season. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. yes I think we were teased into thinking it was here, but it has gone a little chilly and windy again! I'm loving daffodils and hyacinths too… apparently you can replant hyacinths in the garden so we'll have hundreds next spring! x

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ooo yummy radishes. It's gone cold here again but the daffodils are still blooming brightly x

  48. I reluctantly must agree that it's not spring ... there has been a mega storm here this afternoon, and the wind really picked up. I'd not had the heating on and ended up cuddling a hot water bottle!

Your home always looks so cosy. Mine increasingly looks like a kennel the whippets are kind enough to let us live in. I thought my days of picking up toys from all over the carpet were over years ago, but no!

  49. It's most definitely not spring here yet either although the skies are blue this morning ... but it is so, so cold ... lovely photos of your lovely home ... maybe you should contact the producers of your mugs ... it's very disappointing that they keep breaking, especially since you invested quite a bit of money in them ... Bee xx

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
