Just Right

There was once a chair. We'll call him Mr Tullsta. He was purchased in 2000, many years ago, when two people set up house together and had to furnish a home in a hurry on a shoestring budget. He was cheap and practical but he was not comfortable. Oh no. He said, "I belong in a coffee shop or gastro pub, not a living room. I am for perching." He was too tiny, too rigid, and there was no room to curl up legs or snuggle babies, no room to stretch and lounge.

And then there was Mr Poang. He was purchased for a nursery. He'll be wipeable and practical yet comfortable too, and just perfect for feeding babies, they thought. But no. Mr Poang was no good for feeding babies, he was much too laid back. While he is a strong, sturdy chair with a nice bounce, he is not for lounging or snuggling either. His wooden arms do not say "Stay awhile."

Then along came Ms Strandmon

Her magnificent wings give her an authority and mid-century glamour which appeals to the man of the house. as did her extremely wallet-friendly price. The lady of the house likes her lines and shape, her soft, pale colour, and dresses her up with throws and cushions. She is firm enough to sit up straight and read in, wide enough to curl up legs and sew, deep enough to lean back with a cup of tea and sigh. She lives under a sunny, south facing window next to a basket of yarn and is much loved by all. The man checks his emails there. The woman sews, knits, crochets, and checks her phone there. The children sprawl and flop and read. "Stay awhile," says Ms Strandmon. "Stay awhile and rest. Bring your cup of tea or glass of red wine. (But do not spill them please for I am very pale.)"

She is practically perfect.

She is just right.

  1. I love her. It looks like a perfect place to get comfy with yarn and tea. I really enjoyed this post, your personality comes through so well. I am sure she will be very happy with your family.

  2. Brilliant post, definite shades of the three bears IKEA style! There is nothing like finding just the right chair to rest your bones in.

I'm also looking at your space thinking 'you definitely don't have cats'! As much as I admire your open weave yarn basket I just know it would be folly to buy one of my own as the wool would be pulled through the wires, the basket would be lolling on its side and that beautiful red cushion and the flooring would be as hairy as the rug! Sadly, this inspirational post is totally unattainable for me unless I give the cats a short back and sides!

  3. Hahahaha! Yes, we, too, had a "Mr. Tullsta" type. Definitely not good for snuggling babies! Ours lasted less than a year before falling apart (much to my relief, heehee). We now have a wing back that will hopefully someday have a nice slipcover, but is so much better for just everything! When we started out, we had a log futon chair that invited you to crawl in for a long snuggle, but, just like a reluctant hostess, didn't really want you there. Rock hard cushion, wooden arms not letting you sidle up and get comfortable - ugh. So bad, the matching couch/futon was no better! So happy to have comfortable furniture now. Your house is just so beautiful! It seems to transition so naturally from season to season!

  5. And they all sat comfortably ever after!

She's fabulous. Just what I need for my studio, if only it were a fraction bigger.

  6. It looks like the chair has a face. I think maybe I watched too much Pee Wee Herman as a kid.

  8. Ms Strandmon is so elegant, yet so very functional! Love her shape and color, and your blanket and pillow are her crowning glory. Your little story was so entertaining...loved it!

  9. I enjoyed your very amusing post Gillian, and I'm very impressed with Ms Strandmon's appearance - I too could enjoy being enveloped by her lovely softness while I sit and stitch! Pity about the others but I do worry about their fate when better things come along, which they no doubt will. It's so easy to make mistakes with furniture pieces - my hubby once bought the most beautiful leather lounge (on sale) and when it was delivered we found my feet couldn't reach the floor while sitting in it! It's gone now - sold to people with longer legs than mine!
Have a great rest-of-the-week and weekend, and sit comfortably! Hugs, Joy xo

  10. We bought one like Ms Strandom just before Christmas. Ours is deep blue and I think it looks fabulous. Somehow it's usually occupied by my husband and I'm only dreaming of getting it for myself and crochet. ;-)

  15. She is, indeed, perfect. Love your wee story! I have a chair a bit like that except it swivels and is on wheels it is the most comfortable chair in our living room.

You are a brave woman to have such a pale chair, we have very dark sofas and they still manage to look grubby!

  16. Yes, just right! I've been looking for a chair for years, but the o ly ones I like are over £700! Interestingly ikea seem to be just showing three other colours! Xxx

  17. Hello Gillian
Looks like it was third time lucky ! Furniture definitely has personality doesn't it !! And so essential for a chair to have "curling legs under" factor.
    Brilliant post.

  18. Great post Gillian....we have a Mr Poang......I wonder just how many home have Ikea chairs in them? I love the position of Ms Strandmon, next to the window, a basket full of yarn and a blanket to wrap around you if you'll feeling a bit chilly....pretty perfect I would say! Have a good week, Sarah xo

    1. We also have a Mr. Poäng upstairs that has seen many seat pads and now has a leather one, but it gives me backache. In our holiday home we have a Mr. Tullsta that is great to sit and look at the view or read in, but eventually we will inherit my granny's old upholstered rocker (1930s or 40s) and mid-century armchair that are both very comfortable :) We don't have babies to nurse any more!

  20. Gorgeous chair in a very pretty corner ... as I said I love Ms Strandmon ... her lovely lines and pretty buttoning ... the design is based on another Ikea design from the fifties ... she's just perfect ... we have a Mr Tullsta here too, in the boys bedroom ... they named him the 'story chair' so it holds a special place in our home ... bedtime stories are read in it with one boy perched on each arm ... enjoy snuggling up in your new happy place ... Bee xx

  21. That does look lovely - we have Granny Ekenäs for comfort and decoration ;)
My daughter liked Ms Strandmon but then fell for (similar!) Mr. Sherlock - such a loyal girl!!!

  22. That chair is gorgeous, perfect for that spot! Your blanket looks fab on it too (you inspired me to make one of my own, I'm about 20 rows in). We have a Mr Poang too, bought for exactly the same purpose, although I found it perfect for feeding babies and dozing in :-) It's now shoved into a corner of our living room - really useful seating, but I'm desperate to get rid of it.

  23. Matt has a Mr Poang in his bedroom - perfect for reading for homework and looking out the window.
But I rather fancy a Ms Strandmon - sounds the perfect chair. I have a rocking chair, which was my nursing chair all those years ago, but I had it recovered and it is now in the lounge, and is wonderful to sit and craft and also good for a cup of tea or glass of wine! x

  25. We always wanted a Mr Poang chair, always sat in one when we were in the shop but never got to purchase one. My son, on the other hand has two Mr Tullsta chairs. Your Ms Strandmon chair does indeed look very comfortable and I think your blanket looks perfect on it. So nice to have a chair where you can relax.

  28. Hey Gillian,

I think 'Ms' suits her very well. I often see chairs similar to this in second hands shops, and I'm always tempted to buy them and get them recovered. I love a wing back chair. I have never got on with Mr Poang. My in laws had them in their conservatory. They were too....sprung for me. I like to slouch or curl up. My nursing chir was actually n old Lloyd Loom that I picked up for peanuts in the 90's. It was really comfortable and the arms of the chair were just right for leaning against while bottle feeding (no boobies for me. They wouldn't let me with Pops).

  29. Great post. We have a Mr Tullsta and it has lived in the girls room since they were born. I fed both of them in it, day and night. Now we love it because we can both sit side by side in it. We call it the story chair. Love Jo x

  30. Cute post Gillian and what a lovely light filled corner. Nice pale colored furniture is just a dream in this pet filled house! Our current sofa set is a neutral cream, but bought used and always covered with blankets.

  34. Great blog :-)
We have a similar story here and have just ordered our stay a while chair ! have to wait 12 weeks for it though he'll be called Mr Broughton( If he were a person he would wear a tweed suit and shiny brogues). An air of poshness when we first get him smooth soft leather with firm new cushions.....in time he will mellow and relax, the cushions will become softer and he'll be by the fire so anyone who enjoys his comfort will keep snug in winter too.

  52. How satisfying (and so difficult getting there!) to finally find the right chair! It does look perfect, elegant and stylish yet practical and comfortable. I hope you all have many happy years together!
We too have had Poang and Tullsta, and another little one that is actually quite comfy for crochet (Jenny Lund I think), but none of them are "long stay" chairs.
Your room looks lovely, and how cosy with a basket (love that basket!) of yarn right next to the chair.Enjoy!!

  55. oh nice chair! one you can actually sit in. I was thinking about getting rid of my Mr.Poang too. It's funny thing this Ikea chair. We all had to have one didn't we! The place I go for mentoring has a room with a table in it and around it is about 7 of these chairs. It's like something of the Starship enterprise! We don't sit in them either. We just find some other school like chairs instead! last time I went they had changed them, so it's not just us. Heather x
