Winter Beach

There is something about the beach when it's cold. I love to be by the sea whatever the weather or season, but when it's cold and bright - and often much less busy - it's particularly beautiful.

We spent the weekend back home on the south coast to celebrate my mum's birthday. A big number, although she wasn't keen on us constantly mentioning it. She didn't want a big party or a fancy meal, just all the family together. We went for a walk on the beach on Saturday morning. It was perfect - the weather was cold but the sun shone and the sea was a flat calm, there was hardly a breath of wind. It clouded over after a while, creating that strange and dramatic light that comes with dark clouds and bright, low sunshine. I was happy snapping away - it's not a particularly beautiful stretch of coastline, but it's mine and I love it. After our walk we had hot chocolate and cake at the beach hut and Bella and Angus ran around with their cousins, building sandcastles and playing football. It was really nice. Then we had a big, long lunch at my parent's house, with my sisters and I, partners, children. The house was noisy and full, and family and neighbours dropped in throughout the afternoon. It was a lot of driving for one weekend - ten hours in the car in total - but worth it to be there with everyone.

Thank you so much for your comments on yesterday's post. It was so comforting to know that I am not alone in my desire for a little luxury, a little something extra. No-one's life or home is perfect, we are all juggling this and that, choosing between A and B, and just doing the best we can. I forget that sometimes. And thank you for your concern and kind words about the job situation, it's tough out there! But there are a few things in the pipeline, nothing definite but very promising so we are hopeful. Skint, but hopeful.

  1. What a lovely family weekend it sounds. I'd love to have visited a beach on a weekend like the one we've had, weather wise.

I can sympathise on the jobs front as I'm in the same situation as John, though because I made a wrong choice, rather than redundancy. We all have our wishlists and I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting more than you have, wanting those little extras - it's human nature I think, we always want more!

  2. Were you in Sussex? The coast line and beach huts look like they could be.
A big birthday for my mum on Tuesday, and I'm looking forward to celebrating with her and my sister in a hotel. What luxury!
Your photos are lovely - I enjoy walking along the beach far more in the Winter than the Summer! x

  3. Happy birthday to your mother. The visit sounds wonderful. Your mother is the same age as mine and you and I are the same age. I'm glad you were able to make the trip. You have such a good attitude about the job situation, everything will be okay and in the meantime, you're making the most of it and spending time together. You're absolutely right that nobody's like is perfect and we're all just doing the best we can. It's an important reminder for all of us, especially at this time of year.

  11. The sea is beautiful and we also like it in winter best here in Oz. Nobody much around is our ideal. Wish your Mum a belated happy birthday. (been that age). Just read your last post and sorry to hear John has not found work yet. I'm sure we all have a wish lists, small or large. Take care.

  12. really beautiful photographs, I especially love the ones of the beach huts peeking through the driftwood. I've spent many cold days on Cornish beaches in summer (ha!) but I'm not sure I've spent much time on them in winter :) x

  16. Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my blog. I survived the piping but don't know if there will be a repeat! I do love the blue and white fabric it is both pretty and not too jazzy. Thank you too for letting me know about the stamping. My teeny kit was bought in Boots Christmas clearance and I think I've only played with it once since so I'm glad this info was of use.

I loved your bunting card so much I sped right past any suggestion it might be tricky or sticky!

Your photos are lovely especially the one through the hole in the wood. I love deserted beaches, the sparkles the winter sun creates on the water and the peaceful absence of hoards of people. It is far too long since I walked on sand and I so want to see the sea but need to wait until my knee injury is dealt with.

Happy birthday to your Mum and all positive vibes on the job front.

  19. Very cute pictures. I honestly don't know how you manage without an income. So many are struggling. I think you have to have some wants to keep your spirits up. Nothing to feel bad about. Look at those sweet faces and you will feel blessed. Good luck to your family on the leads.

  20. This looks like a perfect celebration. Love the photos, beaches in winter are one of my favourite things. A long drive from West Yorkshire to the South Coast. Did it in the summer to Sandwich for my cousin's wedding so know what you mean. I bet your mum was very happy to have all her family around her.

  24. Family Memories are the best and the most precious. It was my Mums 70th last month too and all the family got together ... Unfortunately I could not be there and neither could my brother ( who lives in Australia) and I missed it soooo much. It looked like a wonderful day, one to treasure. Sometimes I think if we have our families close, we can pretty much deal with whatever life throws us .. Good Luck with the Job Hunting !!

Please tell your mum that 60 is not old, in fact, she's well on her way to even more excitement in life with her grandkids and all they will have to offer! My mom is 61 and I swear there are days she's more active than I am!
I am sorry I have missed posts, I truly miss my blogging friends when I have a few days off, but as you know it's been the holidays here in the States and I have had 5 days off from work, I do love following your blog and your family.
    Much love to you,

  35. That does sound like a wonderful time! I live very far from any beach, so I don't get to see it much at all. I love your photos here -- especially the one through the knothole. You have a good eye, as well as a good attitude in your inner spirit. Hoping you get good news on the job front soon!
