It's That Time Of Year

When the sunrises are so spectacular that you run and get the camera, even though it's a school morning and you're in a rush and there really isn't time.

When the sun hits the mini glitter balls on the Christmas tree and sends tiny sparkles of light dancing all over the ceiling and walls.

When the mantle piece gets Christmasified (yep, I'm pretty sure that's a word).

When the Christmas edition of the Radio Times goes on sale and the highlighters come out. When you buy pink poinsettias in Aldi for £1.50 and wonder why you've never noticed them before and vow to buy them every year from now on, so pretty are they.

When the sewing machine is smokin'.

When you discover the wonder that is a hemostat, and realise that yes, it actually makes a thirty minute job of turning the arm of a doll the right way out take thirty seconds. Seriously, it's the best £5.91 I've spent in months, just brilliant.

When you find yourself making ten crochet flower hair grips for ten little girls because, you know, you've got nothing else to do really.*

When you waste time messing about with alphabet beads.

When a production line of party bags appears on the kitchen window sill.

When birthday cakes are baked and iced (buttercream and smarties - my speciality).

When candles are lit and blown out and a little girl is almost seven.

When it all gets a bit crazy and stressy, but you go along with it, because it's fun and it's that time of year. Then, after the birthday party, if you're me, you can go out for the evening with some other mums from school who you don't know that well but it turns out they're really nice, and drink much too much, and sing Material Girl very badly on a karaoke machine, then stumble home at 1 am. That too.

  1. Ha! I read through this, cooing over the beautiful photos (that sunset, those mirrorball spots, the poinsettia, that cake - so lovely!) and then read the last paragraph and laughed out loud! Those surprising nights out are the best aren't they?! x

  5. Hi Gillian! I like how you've captured the beautiful sunrise--the colours are just spectacular. And your mantlepiece is just perfectly Christmassified! Yes, the poinsettia is lovely--I might get one now too. And it looks like Bella had a great party--those hairclips and letter beads are pretty. By the way I used to use hemostats at work but never thought it's useful for crafting too. Thanks for the tip!

  11. Happy Birthday to Bella. Love your sunrise photo and all your makes. Smiling at the haemostats....I read some of the Amazon reviews and it seems people also use the for getting hair out of dogs ears and feeding fish?

Thank you so much for your comment on last week's pause, it meant a lot that my rambling had held something for you too. The party looks like it is going to be brill and even as a non-cake person I am drooling a the thought of the buttercream and smarties cake, Bella is one lucky girlie. Have a wonderful time.

  13. I love all the different sorts of light you "highlighted" in this post, Gillian! I am happy for your children that they have such a creatively gifted mama, and happy for you that in the midst the challenges of tight budgets and child focused days you are able to bloom where you are planted and be "lighthearted" as well :)

  14. Hi Gillian, When you write a post like this, when you stop and take a moment to notice the beautiful sunrise, when you bake, when you entertain, when you stop and buy a poinsettia, when you make pretty little flowers for lucky little girls just because you can, that is when you know you're enjoying your life!!! Have a fab day!!!

  15. Lovely post Gillian and those gift bags and hairgrips are so thoughtful. The little ones must have been delighted. Oh and we've just got the ashes back this minute. I didn't think we'd do it after our poor performances of late. Anyway, take care.

  28. Dear Gillian
I love the sunrise and the glittery ceiling too. However, I am seriously excited (rather too excited, really)about the hemostat and must order one immediately. Handles for bags, toy arms and legs - I have struggled with turning these out the right way for many a long time, with much annoyance and sore fingers and using inappropriate tools like chopsticks and wooden spoon handles, but finding nothing works that well. Hoorah! I am off to order one. Looks like the party was a huge success!
    Best wishes

  43. It all looks and sounds perfect from the gorgeous light that the sun throws on the walls and ceiling to the beautiful birthday cake and of the lovely party bags. You have done such a lovely job in making your home looks Christmassy and I love the party details too. I do own one of those contraptions, but after damaging the fabric when I tried to pull it threw I am now reluctant to use it as it was very expensive mohair and needless to say I was not too happy. The pink poinsettia is gorgeous and the night out sounds just like something we could all do with at this time of year, unwind and belt out a little without caring what anyone around us thinks. xoxo

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
