A Rabbit For Bella

I have spent every evening for the last week or so stitching. Also cutting, stuffing, knitting and using the sewing machine, but mainly stitching, and this is the result. This will be Bella's Christmas present, a Miss Maggie rabbit which I ordered back in September from Alicia Paulson's shop

Isn't it lovely? I think it's one of the most delightful things I've made. I honestly enjoyed every stage; hand sewing and stuffing the body, knitting the cape and machine sewing the dress. At times it was fiddly and the pattern challenged me but - perversely - this just made me enjoy the whole project even more and made my satisfaction in completing it all the greater.

At almost seven, I think Bella will soon be outgrowing toys like this and so it needed to be made sooner rather than later. I think one of the best things about this rabbit is the clothes and the way she can be dressed and undressed.

As well as wool felt for the body, the kit contains a piece of Liberty tana lawn fabric for a dress, some coordinating yarn for a cape, and felt for the boots.

I think this dress may be the first actual garment of clothing I've made. The elasticated neck and cuffs make it very easy to remove.

And the boots...ah, the boots. They have little thread laces which actually lace up! Very cute.

The best thing is that, now I have the pattern, I can make more rabbits! And different dresses with different capes, and possibly another pair of boots in a bright colour. I've just had a look in the shop and see that there are now patterns for trousers, shirts and little knitted coats and sweaters too...this could all be very dangerous indeed. I think I will have to make at least one more dress; surely the pleasure in dressing and undressing a doll or soft toy is in the choosing of the outfits? If I finish making all my other gifts in time (ha!), I'll try and make another dress at least. And maybe a scarf.

Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions for winter plants! A few of you mentioned Christmas Box, Dogwood and winter flowering Jasmine, and I have a long list of others including Stipa Gigantea, Photina, Viburnum Tinus Eve Price, Midwinter Fire (what a beautiful name!), Cotoneaster, Variegated Ivy, Agapanthus, Viburnum and Daphne Odora.  I really appreciate your thoughts and input, and will be taking all these names with me to the garden centre in the spring.

And now I need an early night as tomorrow is Bella's birthday and I am hosting a "making and baking" party for ten six and seven year olds. I may need a stiff drink after that.

Good luck with the party - I'm hosting a 'Saturday Crafternoon' tomorrow for nine 11 year olds. I am up to my ears in petite cookie houses and ornament bits and pieces. I'll have some wine with you!

  5. Bunny is beautiful! So funny that you said about making more clothes, because as I was reading down I was thinking gosh I can see that Gillian is going to be making all sorts of outfits for this lovely rabbit and then you said the same! I hope that the party goes well and that you have a drink to celebrate, not because you need it! xx

  6. Your rabbit is beautiful Gillian. Yes to more clothes for her! One of my favourite things to do as a child was to dress and undress my toys. I remember my mum had a dress made and there was so much fabric that I had a dress and so did my doll. I loved it when we all matched!

  7. I somehow have missed many of your recent posts and have enjoyed scrolling back to catch up, Gillian. I especially love your Miss Maggie you have made for Bella! Happy Birthday, Bella :-) I really enjoyed making my Miss Maggie Rabbit-Saylor, too, and want to make some more clothing for her. You are a very brave loving Mama, Gillian...blessings on you as you direct the celebrations tomorrow! xx

Good Luck with the party tomorrow, I hosted one of those once ... challenging, but a lot of fun and the children go away with lots and lots of very happy memories... Wishing you a lovely weekend. 14. Oh, she's absolutely beautiful. You've done a wonderful job with the sewing - so professional. I love the flowery fabric underneath her ears but my favourite has to be the boots. If only my daughter was still young enough for dolls: I think I enjoyed helping her dress them more than she did! x

  28. You've done a wonderful job with your rabbit and you are also the cause that I have spent some pennies we don't have, as I have bought a kit, eeek!! I know I have made my own pattern for my hares and there will be more of them in my shop next year, but being a completely and utter lover of all things rabbity I simply couldnt resist. 29. This is sooo adorable, definitely one for Bella to treasure. I made a Pooh Bear from a kit long before I had even met my husband. It became my eldest's favourite toy, was lost and found several times and is now little more than an amorphous brown blob - but at 21 she still loves him!!

  31. Gillian, I have an unmade Maggie Rabbit and I have been waiting for the right time to sew her up. I have to admit I have a fear of blanket stitch, so that has been holding me back. Now after seeing yours I have to have a good think about making mine. Your Miss Maggie is wonderful.
    Hugs,

  33. Hello! I do love Maggie! I made one a few months ago - so sweet! And, as you say, such fun to make. I must have missed your request for winter plant ideas, but of those you list, agapanthus, here in the UK anyway, is very tender. It likes poorish soil, so being slightly potbound in a nice terracotta pot that can be kept frost free and not too wet over winter but baked in summer seems to be ideal. They have them in abundance at St Micheals Mount in Cornwall, a favourite summer spot of ours, and I always associate it with there! Hope the party goes with a swing. My birthday is the 12th, so here's to your December birthday girl! Jen

  47. Hey Gillian,

Ridiculously gorgeous. I have dreams of being able to make things like this. I need to learn to walk before I can run. I am therefore making some cushion covers this week. If all goes well, I may post about them. Bella will love her rabbit, and I think a change of clothes and a scarf is a must.
I like the idea of the party. I hope it all goes well (enjoy the drink...).
I've looked at your winter planting list with interest. I fancy some winter flowering jasmine in the garden.
Hope you had a fabulous time with your birthday girl!

  52. Gillian, your Miss Maggie is absolutely delightful! And don't worry about Bella outgrowing her - Eleanor is 9 and was never into dolls or stuffed toys as such but she adores her Miss Maggie.......It's the sort of thing even I'd love to make just for myself.....and yes I'm with you on wanting to deck her out in more finery. I'm actually keen to make few Rabbits for the boys now the boy clothing patterns are available :-) You did an absolutely beautiful job. Mel x
