Angus's Blanket

It's done, and he likes it.

It started off as one of those stash busting projects and when will I learn that those don't work? You never have enough yarn and so you always have to buy more yarn, but it's never quite the colours/brand that you were trying to use up, resulting  - in my case - in some dubious colours.

I'm hoping that this doesn't show, that actually the multi-coloured rows work next to each other, that the end result is pleasing. It certainly adds a pop of colour to a largely monochrome bedroom!

I often feel a bit flat after I've finished a blanket, a little ambivalent about the finished result, and I think it's because they are such a mammoth projects that I grow weary of them. I need to put the blanket away, get it out in three months, and realise how beautiful it is.

I think also that my tastes in blankets have changed recently. I'd like to make something calmer next, perhaps in one or two colours, with the emphasis more on texture than colour. Something that isn't a granny stripe or ripple or chevron design. But this is what I do know: the next blanket I make will be for me, the pattern will be all my own choosing, I will buy yarn (good yarn!) specifically for that project instead of cobbling it together from scraps, and it will be luxurious and beautiful.

But this is what I have made: a blanket that is practical, washable, colourful, full of contrast, full of love. That is a good thing to have made.

As always with blankets, I gained momentum as the project neared it's end and I have to say that I enjoyed every stitch of the border (details below) and think that is a great pattern.

So, one blanket for a lovely little boy. I asked him what he likes about it - once we'd all gotten over the tragic fact that it was not black and white and not a "badger blanket" - and, quite simply, he likes that I crocheted it for him. Nothing more than that. He just likes that I made it. That makes me very happy.

  2. Such a gorgeous blanket, looking oh so perfect with the bedsheets and bed. Words like that from a little one make all those endless rows so worth it! What a sweetie. And the border is such a great match for the blanket. Look forward to hearing about your next blanket plans, as it's always good to have a blanket in the making!

  3. It's beautiful, Gillian. You did a nice job and most importantly, you put lots of love into it for Angus.

  4. It's when he still drags it down to wrap himself up in at 15... that's when you know the time was worth it. It's a good blanket for a growing boy.

  5. Oh it's lovely Gillian, well done you. And what an adorable comment. I know what you mean about that time at the end of a blanket when you've been staring at it for months. I'm doing a calm one at the moment. Just a tiny thing for on the sofa. I've started with a colour called Pebble, it's all very soothing. I'm going to get some pale pink as well. I don't remember the last time pale pink was in my life. I often see it on blogs and sigh a little. I shall looking forward to seeing what's next for you. CJ xx

  6. Stunning! I love how it complements the grey of the bed and what better comment could a mother wish for? xx

  7. It's lovely Gillian & well done with sticking to it, even when you felt so flat about it. Using up our stash can be frustrating at times (I'm in the throws of something similar with a quilt), but then, maybe that's therapy to release us to try something new, exciting & inspirational to keep us motivated & to keep on crafting. We all need to keep learning, even in our "very" mature years (giggle). Have a great weekend & take care.

  8. Hey Gillian,
Is it an anti climax thing, after working on something for so long? It is beautiful, and I adore your little boy even more after what he said about why he likes it. I look forward to your next blanket very much.

  9. Gorgeous. I really love the border (mustard and graphite?). I'm making a boy blanket at the moment and I don't love it right now, but I hope I (and he) will love the end result. And I'm going to take inspiration from you and make my next blanket just for me!

  11. I thought that pattern looked familiar :-) It looks great and really at home in the bedroom.

  16. A very good thing to have made, indeed! As you say, it is made with much love and has turned out a lovely blanket (I think) for a lovely little boy (I take your word for it). I don't know why you don't like some of the colours; the overall impression is good, not garish or clashing or anything.
I know what you mean about feeling a little flat after having finished a big project such as that! Although I do not crochet, knit or sew, I get a similar feeling after something I was working towards for weeks or months is done.

  17. What a beautiful blanket. It looks lovely on his bed and made with so much love. Lucky little boy :)

  18. The border is very nice, I like it, I have filed that one away for my next crochet project. Overall I think it is a brilliant blanket. As you know with me I love the scraps. Scrap blankets work but the pattern has to match the scraps not the other way around I would say. To use scraps you need small motif squares where you can manage more closely what colour you put next to another and not require enough scrap to go two whole rows. That said, I love the pop of colours. Glad he likes that you made it too. Jo xxxx

  19. Muted but bright! It really goes well with the newly painted bed as well. I bet he's chuffed. Cracking job.

  20. Lovely blanket (and lovely comment)

Have you considered a corner to corner blanket? You don't have to decide at the start how big it is going to be - you just stop when its as wide as you want. Then you fill in the other corner. I did one when I had a load of yarn to use up. I stopped the first corner when I'd used half.

  21. I think this is a lovely blanket. I like everything about it. That border is one I would like to use.

  22. Those last two lines say it all Gillian. That is what is important - that you made something for your son and he appreciates it. I have made some ridiculously simple, thrown together doll clothes and playthings for my daughter and she doesn't care what they look like. She is just happy I made them. And personally, I think it is a great blanket - fun, but not too "cheery".

  23. Ah this is so lovely Gillian, and I love the fact that Angus just loves that you made it for him. I love when I walk into the living room and all the Bears are watching a film and each one is snuggled under one of my blankets. I know all the effort has not been wasted and there is a sense of achievement and satisfaction. I get what you mean also about that sort of sense of flatness you get after finishing something like a blanket. As you know with my current WIP it's proving to be my nemesis. I've got the reverse I think. I feel flat making it, yet I know when it's almost done I'll get silly with happiness over it. For a while now I've been having a strong desire to make a blanket out of shades of neutrals. Very unusual for me but just something for me. However, if it does ever happen.......it'll be a REALLY small blanket! Ha ha!!!!!!!

I'll look forward to see what you decide pattern and colour wise when you make your very own blanket as I'm sure it'll be very inspirational.

Have a super week my lovely xxxxxxx

  26. I was reading your post, loving Angus's blanket when my partner Mark, looked over at the screen and declared 'Wow, what a gorgeous blanket, are you going to make one of those?' I guess I might just have to indulge myself!

  27. Gillian, you have done it again! I had my doubts about that pink and boy was I wrong! It's just beautiful. Compliments the bed and brings color to the room. And Angus is pleased! Well done!

  28. It's wonderful, what you're feeling is exhaustion, it's tiring finishing a big project.

  29. It's gorgeous - you have a real eye for colour. My favourite part was Angus's comments though :) x

  31. Well done on finishing another work of love. The edging adds so much to the overall appearance if the blanket and hopefully you feel it was worth the effort. I don't think it's too bright at all-the colours are subtle and varied which means the blanket will be usable for ever! Enjoy your break from school and relax. Happy days. Catriona

  32. Great blanket, lovely colours and I know you've worked tirelessly to complete it. It will be a treasure for generations to come. I shall wait to see your blanket I'm sure it will be so good. I wish you luck. Also can I say Molly is just lovely. I have a rescue whippet and she is lain across my knee as I type❤️ Lovely times.

  33. I think all the colours go very well together. And again, you should give yourself a pat on the back for finishing such a big project and that Angus loves it. Great work! x

  35. It's fabulous Gillian. I love everything about it, but most importantly Angus does. A lot of time and love has gone into it. A blanket is such a great project to work on without having to concentrate too hard. Mine is almost complete now and I will soon need to find something new to work on. X

  36. Oh I think this is gorgeous Gillian, and I may well follow you in using up some of the stash. I'm about three-quarters through two blankets at the moment, same thing in different colourways, so I think I'll have quite a stash left over.
Lucy's patterns are excellent aren't they - she writes so clearly, a real skill. I love that edging - looks tricky but maybe I'll add it to the 'must learn' list.

  37. This is beatiful!!! Since last December I'm making a somewhat similar blanket but I should have made like yours placing two segments in the same color. I change color after each segment so I get tired of changing colors. This is a lovely work and the border is awesome!! Congratulations on the job well done!

So, a puppy! I am delighted - can't wait to meet him/her. Yes, one more week to go and it can't come soon enough, I'm shattered! xx

  39. Bravo on the blanket, Gillian...even if it isn't black and white, I can not find fault with it. I've just had a catch up with your posts, back to January, and enjoyed each one. Angus's room decoration is a triumph to me. I am especially impressed with your material stamping, a craft I have never tried before. Your bead hot mat inspires me! Your comments about fish sauce caused me to laugh out loud. I am so glad you are close to loving family members who can pop over to help you with projects, and just visit for the joy of it. And to be able to walk to the beach...ahhh, I miss that, but am glad you can enjoy it. I went to IKEA recently to get their light bulbs for my bookcase lamps, and managed to leave with just them, a new catalogue and one of their clever bags that I made use of on my last air flight. Sending you hugs and wishes for a Happy Spring! xx

  46. Love it <3 The colours are lovely and I really like the white stripes. I've not put white in the bigger blankets I've done but have in some rainbow stripe baby blankets as I think the rainbow looks nicer with the white between each colour. It really lightens Angus' blanket. Like it much!

  47. Oh it looks amazing! And so large! You certainly don't stint when it comes to your blankets, you always make such generous sized beauties. I'm so happy to hear that is well appreciated. Isn't that a wonderful thing? Bless him.
