Summer Colours

Everywhere pink, red and green, those colours making their way from the supermarket and the garden into the house, onto the table. Strawberries in smoothies and on top of pancakes.  Redcurrants and blackcurrants ripening on the bushes outside. I pick a handful every day or two, add them to the bags in the freezer, look into ice cream recipes. I make the simplest salad of tomatoes, mozarella and basil; it tastes like summer, clean and fresh and bright. Supermarket peonies have become a dining table regular and I just love them. Milky white freesias smell sweet up there on the mantel. Outside, pink hollyhocks and geraniums bring a little colour to my pots and borders. And everywhere so very green, after what has been a mild, muggy and very wet few weeks. Sports day was rained off but everything is growing like mad. This time last year we'd just had a brief but wonderful heatwave. I'd quite like another one, if I'm honest. I'd like to spend my days barefoot under cloudless skies and complain about how it's too hot to sleep.

Thank you for your kind words on my last post. I am feeling quite well, if a little tired and frazzled. Nothing that a rest and some vitamin D won't cure. In the meantime there is wine and crochet.

  1. I've had my very first homegrown raspberries today, only four of them but they were so delicious. Let's hope we get sun decent sun soon Gillian, we all need it that's for sure! ;) xxx

  2. Our neighbor just brought us some Marionberries and we have been giving our local fruit stands some steady business :) My Holly Hock is producing magenta colored blooms. On this side of the pond I am hankering for some hot weather, too, and when it arrives I will probably complain a bit, too, but I have not recovered from getting chilled during our July 4th fireworks celebration when it is typically hot! May the sun warm you up soon! xx

  3. What a pretty post, Gillian. Come visit me, you'll be so hot you won't want to do anything except laze around eating ice cream. :)

  5. Beautiful photos - especially that delicious looking salad. Shame about sports' day being rained off, although, if I'm honest, I was always secretly relieved when that happened! Hope the rest and vitamin D work their magic. xx

  6. Lovely summery photographs Gillian. I think sports day is always rained off. Yes, there is always wine and crochet. Although, in my case anyway, not a good idea at the same time. I hope you get that rest very soon. X

  7. It's such a blissful time of year isn't it. Sports day rained off here too, it's a tradition. Wonderful to see the produce from your lovely new garden. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. CJ xx

  8. The pink peonies are exactly what I want for my living room - I think the colour looks great against a grey backdrop, as in your dining room and in my living room :-)
All the wonderful berries that are ripe now make it really easy to have something sweet and healthy at the same time. My parents keep giving me freshly picked raspberries from the allotment - I love them on top of my muesli, or "just so".
And Caprese - the salad of tomatoes, mozzarella and basil - is a firm favourite all year round, but especially so in summer.

  9. Love photos Gillian. The one that caught me by surprise were the freesias, as mine are up and will be showing buds in the next few weeks, so guess yours were bought from the florist, but I do wish we could grow peonies which actually flower. I love them nearly as much as roses, oh, and all sorts of other flowers too. The berries also look delicious. Have a good weekend and take care.

  13. I love summer colours and summer fruit. Redcurrant red must surely be the nicest and glossiest of all reds there is. Richard made redcurrant ice cream, with the last of last years harvest to make space in the freezer for the new harvest. Your photos are beautifully summery Gillian. Have a great and hopefully sunny weekend. x

  15. Looking so pretty and summery. It's very pink and red in my kitchen too. I especially appreciate how the end of the main strawberry season dovetails with the summer raspberries which are then followed effortlessly by the Autumn raspberries. I can recommend peony 'Sarah Bernhardt' as an excellent garden plant and if you are looking for an easy summer flowering pink perennial Astrantia Roma is hard to beat. Mine has been flowering for weeks and looks a picture next to the grey-leaved Rosa glauca rubrifolia - fleeting pink roses but pretty red hips. It's not fussy about soil or aspect either. Hope it's a warm and sunny weekend for you - we're down in Bosham for sea air today.

  18. This last week the sun has really tried hard to shine here. It makes such a difference and lifts my spirits. It's lovely to have those bright red fruits, we're having so many locally grown strawberries I'm on the verge of looking like one!
