Happy New Year

I've been feeling very reflective over these last few weeks, as so many conversations between John and I begin with "this time last year..." On this day last year, 2nd January, we were packing up our home in Leeds into a huge red lorry and locking the door for a final time on an empty house. We stayed with my parents for a couple of months while we looked for and bought a new place, a house that was a lot cheaper than it should've been and we were able to snap up because we'd already sold our Leeds property. Bella and Angus started their new school and I am thankful every day that they are happy there, that the transition was a positive one for them. John found a new job that was better than we could ever have hoped and, in June, I returned to work. So much good luck, yes, but also so much sheer bloody hard work. Last year was all about change, whereas this year - I hope, we never know what life will throw at us - will be about settling. Settling in to our home, to our area, to our lives.

Yesterday we celebrated the first day of the new year with an incredibly windy walk on West Witterings beach, so windy that the dry sand from the dunes was being blown across the wet sand on the beach and it was hard to talk. I can't think of a better way to start the new year, to be honest. It was breathtakingly beautiful in a very stark, grey way, and also quite busy with families and dog walkers, but luckily it's a big beach and there was enough sand and sky for everyone. Once we were sufficiently battered by the wind we went for posh burgers and milkshakes for lunch then to the cinema to see the new Star Wars film, then home to drink tea in front of the fire. A lovely day all in all.

I've been looking back through my photos and chosen one from each season from 2015. They were chosen for the way they capture a moment in time but also because I remember how very happy I was at each of those times.

Spring - walking in bluebell-carpeted woods.

Summer - that glorious heatwave we had and the opportunity to go down to the beach and swim in the sea after work.

Autumn - walking in the woods again in the golden light.

Winter - our first Christmas in our new home.

Happy new year to you, lovely readers. Thank you for stopping by and reading, for your comments, support and friendship. I hope 2016 is a happy year for you and one that is filled with peace.

  2. Oh I adore the beach huts! We've been at the beach too - not sunny and warm though for summer - a huge storm blew through. Getting to know a new area is so much fun - enjoy.

  3. Happy New Year, hope 2016 is the settling year you wish it to be. I love walking on a beach in cold windy weather, just the thing to blow the cobwebs away. I love the beach huts, my DH doesn't understand why I rave about beach huts but there is just something about them isn't there! xx

  25. We love to go to a big expanse of beach on either Boxing Day or New Year's Day. All that space and light and room for running around. There are always loads of dogwalkers and people with small boys. It's been an amazing year for you all, you've done so well to make a new home for everyone and settle everyone in. I'm wishing you and yours a really happy and wonderful 2016. CJ xx

  27. Lots of changes for you last year, I'm glad it's been a positive one. DH and I went for a (much muddier than expected )long walk yesterday which served only to confirm to me that I really do need new walking boots! When the mud went over the top of them it wasn't so pleasant! Happy new year to you and your family, may it be a special and contented year. Claire x

  28. Happy New Year to you and your lovely family, Gillian, even though the new year is already on its third day :-)
The windy beach walk does indeed sound like a great way to start the year, and I am sure the settling in this year will be good. It was exciting to follow you through this year of "firsts", and I often marvelled at how much you were able to fit into one weekend after a full week of work.
Thank you for the glimpses you allow us into your home and into your life!

  32. You are very lucky to live near the beach. I love beach walking in all weather. Some of my most memorable beach walks were in Maine in winter, when we were all bundled up and in boots instead of bare feet. Cheers to a Happy New Year in your happy house!

  34. Is it a year already, unbelievable. West wittering beach reminds me of holidays in my teenage years, a beautiful place.
Look forward to catching up with all your posts in the forthcoming year, let's hope it goes at a slower place.

  35. Where has the year gone? I think I discovered your blog via Thistlebear, via Posie gets cosy (a search for a crochet blanket pattern first led me to Alicia) about the same time as you moved south and I remember thinking how brave you were - new home, new jobs, new school, and thinking how well you rose to the challenge and adapted to the change. You really are a very good homemaker Gillian and I love reading about all the lovely things you make and how you put things together and then to see it photographed beautifully is a bonus. Thank you, and very best wishes for 2016.
