Home For Christmas

This weekend we've done a whole lot of nothing and it's been glorious. Yesterday was declared a Stay at Home day and while the kids played I pottered around the house, did some housework and washing, decanted my blackberry gin, baked some mince pies (ready rolled pastry and shop bought mincemeat, but we're calling them homemade) and we have all enjoyed watching a lot of Christmas television, The Box of Delights, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Home Alone in particular. The classics. Today we ventured out to the shops briefly for festive supplies (more yarn for Angus's crocheted dog, and sweets to decorate the gingerbread house with) and even made it out for late afternoon a walk around the harbour in the setting sun. Actually, that brief walk was amazing. I don't know about you but I haven't felt much sun on my face lately, what with the incessant mild, wet weather we've had this autumn. It's much too warm and seems to rain every day. I would like to wake up to a hard frost, to one of those very cold, crisp, blue skied days. Wouldn't that be nice?

I've also been fiddling around with the arrangement on the mantel. You know how I love a pretty mantel display, and how I have struggled to fill this enormous slab of wood that sits above our fireplace.

This will be our first Christmas in this house, and so I gave a lot of consideration to what to put where. I know it looks like I put all the decorations in one place but a few favourite bits stayed in their boxes this year, like our toilet roll tube Nativity scene and my alpine tea light holders. I realised that I don't have to get absolutely every single thing out every year, that some things can stay packed away. My two homemade stockings still hang either side of the fireplace, as they always do, and I picked out the red with some pretty IKEA lanterns and a poinsettia.

We found some tiny baubles in the loft that were just perfect for my bare branched tree, and the rest is a mixture of favourite bits and bobs, while sort-of sticking to a red, white and wood theme.

There was one old favourite I did unpack though, and will enjoy taking out of the Christmas box for many years to come: my felt gingerbread house.

I've been toying with the idea of making a real one this year, an actual edible gingerbread house. We'll see how that goes.

(Also - I don't know why blogger has centered half the text in this post. I did not tell it to. Grrr.)

  1. Your first Christmas in your new house is looking absolutely gorgeous. The gingerbread house is excellent. We made one a couple of years ago, it was vast, we were eating gingerbread for ages! A winter walk in the sun is a wonderful thing isn't it. Wishing you a good week Gillian.

  3. What a lovely home you have. As far as the text being centered, it happens to me too ... I think it has something to do with the photos. If I put the photos in before the text, it does this even if I ask it to put the text on the left. If I take the photos' out and ask again to have the text on the left, then put the photo's back in, it works fine. Crazy and annoying I know! Love your blog, Merry Christmas to you! xx Susan

  4. Your Christmas mantel looks wonderful. A felt gingerbread house is such a great idea - I love the look of the actual gingerbread ones but never fancy the thought of eating it all, along with the rest of the festive/birthday stuff round here; a felt one would be just the thing! Merry Christmas, Gillian. xx

  5. It's all very pretty, cheerful and festive, and it's the first time ever I see a felt gingerbread house - I love it!
Don't know why you call what you've been doing all weekend "nothing"; sounds like a rather long list of tasks compared with mine :-)

Sorry to hear you've had so much rain and hardly any sun. I don't long for crisp and cold, give me a mild winter anytime (I don't "do" cold very well), but our fields and woods and gardens here really do need some rain. It's only rained about twice this whole month of December, which gave me plenty of occasion for walks in the sun on weekends, including yesterday.

  6. Same here. I've left some thing packed away this year. Old favourites remain but its nice to ring the changes.
Time your visit to Ikea for next October and buy one of their ready baked gingerbread houses, all you have to do is assemble and decorate. Joyous!

  8. THe red lanterns make it on the mantel. You have a real flair for decorating. I could imagine if you had a shop, people would crowd around outside to see your seasonal window displays!

  9. It's all looking very festive and cosy. We'd love some decent rain and mild would be good too. It's far too hot here for December with the last 2 days over 40 and wondering what the rest of summer will bring. Today has been better, but it's heating up again for Christmas. Take care.

  10. It all looks wonderfully festive. Some of the decorations here stayed in the loft but only because I couldn't find the bag with them in. Or maybe it was a box. Enjoy what's left of the lead up to the big day.

  11. Hey Gillian,
It's mad to think that last year you were up to your eyes in packing! If I had a mange, I would go to town on it at Christmas. I have a red theme here. It feels right. And I would like a few cold snap days too. It is raining and blowing a hoolie here. No walks along the beach today. And yes, some winter sun would be very good for me right now.

  13. I remember the gingerbread house. It was gorgeous then, and it is gorgeous now. I can't quite fathom that it has been a year since you moved, it only seemed like yesterday. Decorating a new house for Christmas sounds like a lot of fun. I find that I get a bit in a decorators rut being in the same old house year after year. There was a tiny moment of sun light this morning, unfortunately it was whilst I was driving and it was shining right in my eyes... still, it was the good old sun making an appearance (at the moment the rain is battering our windows). Have a lovely week. x

  14. It looks very festive around your house, Gillian. We'll be making a real gingerbread house any day now, once the worst of the kids' colds has passed. I don't want anything gross in my gingerbread house, ha. I hope you soon get some of that cold, sunny weather that you and I both love so much.

  15. Our first Christmas in our new home too. After 30 years in the other. We have only been here one month. It warmed our heart to drive by our old house and see it all decorated for Christmas. Merry Christmas to you. Love all your decorations.

  16. All looking gorgeous! So warm and sparkly. I tried to make a gingerbread house rather harder than it looked! Enjoy your hols. The rain and wind are driving yet again at the windows, no chance of a white Christmas this year. Xxx

  17. I don't think I could bring myself to eat a gingerbread house after all the effort that goes into making one, so I'll pass on that festive activity and admire your lovely felt one instead. It's all looking beautiful Gillian - have a very happy Christmas in your lovely happy house. Sam xx

  18. We have the opposite situation here... It looks like it would be our last Xmas in the house we are in... So the mood reflected this situation... Did you make the "NOEL" tins on the floor? They look lovely.

    1. Yes - they are just tin cans with holes in them! Good fun to make.

  19. This post really gets me into Christmas mood. I love how you decorated your house! We will be moving from our tiny flat into our very own house by the end of next year and I'm really looking forward to have enough space to put up some festive decorations!
    Have a very merry Christmas!

  20. We cheat and buy a gingerbread house from IKEA which always involves much hilarity in trying to glue it together with icing and then watching the sweeties slide gracefully off the roof as they're too heavy to stick. Your mantel looking wonderfully festive, hope you have a very happy Christmas xx

  23. The weather app on my phone predicts that if I get up at 5AM tomorrow morning I might see some snowflakes mixed with rain. It has been raining here.a.lot....too. It is lovely to see your cosy fire and festive decorations, and I'm glad your are enjoying time at home, Gillian. I have never dared to try to make a gingerbread house and think you are a brave woman to contemplate doing so. Merry Christmas! xx

  25. Happy Christmas Gillian, it's all looking so lovely. Studding oranges with cloves and watching The Box of Delights was one of our Christmas traditions on the first afternoon of the holidays.

  26. Mmm blackberry gin sounds good, we either do sloe or damson gin. Love your felt gingerbread house, we had great ideas about making an edible one this year but I don't think it's going to get done - there's always next year. Wishing you a very happy first Christmas in your new house. Jane xx
