Home Days

We're getting to that point in the holidays where none of us are sure what day of the week it is, or even what the actual date is. Honestly, the other day I spent a good five minutes trying to work out the date - without resorting to checking my phone - counting back in my head from things I knew were in the diary. We know it's August and, for the last couple of days, it's been warm and sunny, so that's all that matters.  After all those day trips and all that dashing about, this last week has settled down into a relaxed pace. We get up late. We might go to the park or the shops for bits and bobs. Various chores get done in a slapdash fashion and there is glorious pottering in the house and garden and general slobbing around. Garden pottering reached an all time high this afternoon when I spent two hours out there sitting in a chair, reading the paper and crocheting.

I picked some hydrangeas from the bush in my parents' front garden and spent a happy half hour fiddling around with them and faffing about with the mantel arrangement.

I've given up worrying about how balanced the mantel looks and just enjoy putting stuff on it.

Some mornings, after I've got up and made everyone breakfast, I get back into bed with a cup of tea and read for a while. This is the perfect time for reading. It's like when you read before you go to sleep because you're still in your pyjamas, but better because you're awake. I'm reading Where'd You Go, Bernadette. It's completely and utterly brilliant, and very very funny. Quite good considering I chose it from the library because I liked the cover.

A few new house purchases have been made, including this print from Inaluxe which I love for it's colours and the stylised floral design. I do love a stylised flower.

And some new bedding. I've only bought plain white bedding for as long as I can remember, but I am ready for a change and this yellow is so cheery and perfect with the blue wall in our bedroom.

Every now and then I demand all iPads, TVs and other screens be turned off and force my children to Play With Their Toys, evil mother that I am. Bella can play on her own for hours without any intervention from anyone, but Angus needs a prod in the right direction. I was quite amused to see T-Rex driving Barbie's convertible.

This has become a favourite park.

The size of the playground seems to suit them so well; not to babyish, or too big. I get to sit on a bench or rock and crochet while they play.

Over the last few weeks I've been working on two net bags, to be used as storage. I didn't plan it that way, but the colours mirror the pinks and blues in the jug of hydrangeas on the table.

And finally, I've ordered the pattern and yarn for this throw. I didn't really need another blanket to be working on, but I love the colours here so, so much, and have never tried corner to corner crochet, so I'm looking forward to taking this on holiday with me.

Crafting aside, I've also been cracking the whip on the DIY front now, and we finally have a proper light in our dining room after months living with a bare light bulb. I'll take some photos and show you that soon. I hope you're all enjoying the holidays too, wherever you are.

  1. Oh I love that you're hopping back into bed with a cuppa to read in the mornings. I've been doing exactly the same thing and feeling a little guilty, and that I was the only one enjoying holiday quiet time. Now that I know I'm in great company, I won't worry! Thank you lovely! Bee xx

  2. It's lovely when you forget what day it is isn't it. I keep forgetting my phone, it's so nice to be unscheduled. Glad you're enjoying the book, I had it from the library a while back and liked it too. Your home has come together beautifully, and the new throw will be a great addition, I know you'll make a great job of it. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Gillian. CJ xx

  3. You really do make and find some beautiful things for your home Gillian. Your eye for colour is unerring. I always think that returning to bed with a cup of tea and the newspaper or a good book is the height of decadence, but I still do it!

  4. Don't they say never judge a book by its cover? But I always pick mine that way! I love the graphic headscarf and glasses design!
It's wonderful when days mean nothing; the sign of a good summer holiday. I am the happiest, most relaxed I can remember for a while; and so motivated to work at the moment!

  5. That blanket pattern is gorgeous! We are gearing up for a no-electronics week, ourselves. Kids will not be happy, but they always come around quite quickly! I do love slow mornings, glad you are enjoying some!

  6. Down time is the best, isn't it? We are "in between" big summer events, too and it has been great to do very little. Today I had a "to do" list but it contained things like "work on quilt" and "take dog for long walk" and "get some Starbucks." I'm happy to say I did everything on my list. Love your new sheets Very summery. They'll add a bit of sunshine to you room as the days and nights get cooler. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! XOXO B.

  7. Love the flower print and the new throw looks gorgeous. I've lost track of the days too; this week I put the recycling bins out a day early. The funny thing was that all my neighbours did too; apparently they rely on me to remind them.........the power! Your hydrangeas look gorgeous - I planted a small one this year but it's still tiny with only a few flowers which I'm loathe to cut....maybe next year. Have another relaxing week. xx

  8. My holiday starts Sunday next week - nearly two weeks in Ripon!
The yellow bedding would look simply perfect in my bedroom, too... yellow being my favourite colour.
Hydrangeas are so beautiful, and summery. My grandma had them in her front garden. She used to let them stand until they were dry, and then a friend of hers came to pick them. That friend sprayed them gold and silver and used them for Christmas ornaments.

  10. Hi, the two net bags would be ideal for my handmade Christmas gifts. Is there a pattern you could provide a link to ?Joolz x

    1. Hi Joolz. The pattern is from the book Modern Crochet by Molla Mills. I don't think it's available on line, sorry.

  11. I read every morning, but I'm afraid it is my blogs! Can't read at night because I'm too tired. I read in the bath which horrifies my son! The cover of the book is fab. Glad you are enjoying the hols. I used to love that 6 weeks and be really sad when the boys went back to school. Unfortunately I don't get that length of time any more. Xx

  12. I love the Hornsea Bird ashtrays on your mantel piece. I too have a small collection of Hornsea on one of my mantels. Your local park looks lovely.

  13. The Hydrangeas are beautiful, I don't know if it is a particularly good year for them but I keep being drawn to them when we have been out and about. I too would have picked that book purely on the strength of that cover and will now of course be keeping an eye out for it.

  14. Ahh, how I miss those lazy days, after a week back at work. I am glad you are enjoying your holiday so much. I hope the weather stays nice for a few more park and garden days. x

  15. Glad you've settled into a routine for now and wonder when and where you are going away to? Love the look of that new crochet project and also those gorgeous hydrangeas. Hope the weather stays good and take care.

  16. Hey Gillian,
I read Bernadette last year. I thought it was excellent. I'm too often disappointed by novels. I think my expectations are too high. I was toying with buying some new bed linen, and was thinking yellow would be nice. Yours is lovely. And how I envy you your ability to unplug your children; I wish I could do the same with Sam and Alf.
Enjoy your pottering days, my friend. Embrace the hap hazard mantel of life 😁
    Leanne xx

  17. It sounds like you're having nice, relaxing days. I love your crocheted bags, and the throw you're going to make will be beautiful. I was just looking at that pattern online and I think it's really interesting and different. Our idle days are about to end this week with the return to school and I'm actually really happy about that. I hope you have a good week.

  18. You know you're enjoying your hols when you lose track of time and going back to bed with a cuppa is a must :o) Have a good week next week. Jane xx

  19. It sounds like a lovely way to spend your holiday, not knowing the day or date is perfect. I read that book a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

  20. I just love it when the day and date doesn't matter, it is the epitome of relaxation! Sadly I am all too aware now of the date as Scottish children return to school next week, and we have school uniform and shoe shopping to do tomorrow. Enjoy your 'timeless' holidays! Love the blue shopping bag, are you thinking of posting a tutorial? X

  21. We're also in that free-form part of the summer and having gorgeous, summery weather over the weekend really boosted the relaxing around here! Sitting outside reading or just sitting, eyes closed in the sunshine - bliss. Glad you're enjoying the holidays. Love your photos, as always; particularly liking that Inaluxe print. Well done on getting your kids to down screens. It gets harder to do - I think my eldest's phone is surgically attached. Sam x

  22. You can tell how much the children enjoy that playground seeing them run towards it. Lovely to have that on your doorstep.
The new bedding is very you! Great colour.
It's good to have a balance between busy and laid back during the hols.
I'm the same, every so often I say something away from screens now and Savanna has to switch off, colouring is her favourite thing right now. Tony has been out most days volunteering at the charity shop we've hardly seen him!

  23. Love the bedding, I might just be tempted to treat myself. Also love the bags and I'm looking forward to seeing the new project. I really miss the long summers with the children when the days all blend together.

  24. Sounds like you're having a lovely relaxing holiday. That new bedding is gorgeous. I've had white for years - with white embroidery - and would love a change. So far, though, I can't decide what to change to so it will stay white for now.

  25. I love that kind of Holiday! The sound so much like ours - already a few weeks back hélas!
Look forward to see your blanket - how funny that the pattern comes in "your" colourway exactly.

  27. I'm so behind leaving comments I'm not sure where I've visited. It sounds like you're having a nice break at home I'm thinking of taking another week off soon just to relax I spent the first one decorating. x

  28. The bags look great and I love the look of that blanket too. I've only recently learnt to crochet but I'm addicted already, it's so much fun x

  29. It all sounds lovely and relaxed and isn't it just great when you ban the screens and they actually play again! I usually try to limit it to an hour a day in the hols but a little more time often creeps in :-) Now Josh is ten he seems to find it hard to 'play' with his toys and it just feels so sad. Dry days are fine as he love being outside but wet days have rather a lot of I'm bored comments!! x

  30. I've been relying on my phone to tell me the day of the week (let alone the actual date) for a couple of weeks now. We've had a ton of fun this summer, but I'm ready to go back to the nice regular routine of the school run for a rest. Really must go and sort out the uniform...

  31. great images, and the book looks fab too!

  32. We seem to have the same taste! I've had my eye on a large Inaluxe print for my living room and on the MissPrint Denver blossom set for a while! And Where'd you go Bernadette is also on my reading list ;)
