The Tiniest Spare Room There Ever Was

Do you remember our box room? That very small third bedroom, which was a nursery, then a bedroom, then an office? Well it's changed again. It's now a spare room, but still a kind of office of sorts. It's still small though, that hasn't changed.

We dismantled that lovely big, white desk and put it back in the garage. It will be used again, I am sure. In it's place we squeezed - and I do mean squeezed, we had to move the radiator - a single bed. But not just any single bed, a trundle bed.

Look, it's like a double decker bed!

It turns out that the sofa bed downstairs, which all our lovely house guests have always slept on, isn't that comfortable, and once they got wind of our spare third bedroom, hints were dropped about the possibility of putting a bed in this room. It's quite a clever contraption. Even I can manage it. You pull out the bed underneath, lower the legs and behold, you have either two single beds or one huge double bed.

When no-one is staying, the bed is covered over with a throw and, with the addition of a little clip-on lamp, makes a lovely reading spot. I mockingly call it a "day bed" and the kids love sitting up there people watching.

On the other wall, we had a chair (now in the loft) and an old IKEA bookcase. Now we have something here which I am ridiculously excited about, as space saving measures go - a drop down desk from IKEA!! Look, isn't it great?

We use it as a desk, as we still have the filing cabinet and all our paperwork in that room, and it can also be used as a dressing table too, or anything really.

And then, when we have people staying, the bed comes out and is made up (which is actually pretty hard work as it's sooo wide), and the chair is put on the landing and the desk lowered.

And there you have it, a very big bed in a very small room. It works, just, and has so far had very good reviews.

It did mean that a curtain tie-back was needed though, as the position of the bed means the curtain must be pulled to one side. Really, a blind would be a lot better here now, but a curtain is what we have and so I made the best of it with a striped tie-back.

The colours are supposed to echo what is in the room, with the mustard, teal, pink and grey. There is something summery about the stripes, they remind me of the beach, of deckchairs.

I don't mind losing our big desk as, to be honest, I never really used it. I still do any sewing or computer work downstairs, at the dining room table, as I always have done and probably always will. It was very handy for photographing things though! Luckily, the new little desk will do, for now.

  5. What a clever use of space !!
I can imagine your guests being happier now - a "real" bed cannot be compared with a sofabed... (You'll probably have more sleepover-demands now ;-))))
    Cute curtain tie-back !!

  14. Really clever. I had a 4ft bed in my box room, but it was never used so I got rid and it is now my sewing room, love it!xx

  15. looks great! we have a double decker bed in E's room, it is ever so useful although the way our bottom bed's legs spring out terrifies me, they whacked me in the face once.............

  16. You're so clever at homemaking, it's a beautiful space and so functional. I have a tiny room like that as well; I've shoehorned the littlest boy in there - a bed, a big desk, a stool and his guitar and it's full. I love the image of the children on the day bed people watching, it's a lovely spot. CJ xx

  17. How very clever, and I love the colour combo. Mustard and Pink. Who'd have thunk it. Looks great.
I wish I had the time, energy, inspiration to change all the colourscheme in our house. A domination of chocolate, navy, burgundy and varieties of beige and brown.Nothing so light and airy as this.

  20. Looks like a great way to use your third bedroom. It's great when you can just change how a room is used - no space is wasted.

  21. It looks so cosy and great to have a dual purpose room. Now you'll have loads of guests queuing up to stay. Look out of your window and it'll be like when all the nannies turn up to be interviewed in Mary Poppins! x

  22. It looks a really great use of space and I love the embroidered linen. Sadly in our house a day bed would all too quickly become a cat bed with accompanying layer of tortoiseshell cat hair - sigh; I'm envious. :-)

  23. That's a great bed Gillian, and wonderful idea too with the drop down desk - you are so organised with everything, you're lovely home is a credit to you, well done! xoJoy

  24. The room is gorgeous! I like the pink curtain, it adds a nice color to the space, better than a blind! Clever of you to move the radiator and think of a drop-down desk. ~Another Gillian

  26. Lovely! The sun shining in is so inviting! Funnily my husband and I was doing the same today with our smallest bedroom. We've needed an extra sleeping place in the house and out went the spacious desk, cleared some bookshelves to serve as 'desk extensions' and I'm so happy about how it looks. I LOVE rearranging furniture to have a more practical house! Love your blog! Thanks for chatting to me about your Happy House, it somehow spills over into my as well, and is very welcome here!

  27. A lovely space Gillian. I am very struck with the drop down desk. Was it IKEA? And it's nice that the children use it to chill out. Personally can't think of anything better than relaxing on a day bed people watching.

  28. What a lovely and clever space saving job you've done. And even with the very limited space you've managed to make it look so bright and pretty. This should be in one of those 'space saving ideas' sections in home magazines. x

  29. Looks great Gillian…we have a similarly teeny room, so that bed and drop down desk (especially!) are now on my shopping list!

  32. Another good job done! Wish I'd thought of a drop down desk.

  33. Excellent! I find what you do with this third bedroom very interesting, as our third bedroom is tiny too. I have it as a half-finished craft room at the moment, but if (hopefully 'when'!) we have kids it's good to see what options we have for that room as time goes by! That drop-down desk is great - I like the little shelf look of it when dropped down. Love the way your tie-back pulls all the colours together - gorgeous!
Oh, that Ikea chair is amazing - we were so very tempted by it - it looks funky and is also really comfortable!
    Ok, enough ramblings...

  40. I am always gobsmacked at how well you just get on with things. Our smallest room which is a similar size is filled with so much junk (and 4 book shelves) that I can barely get through the door. I have been wanting to make it into something else for ages and then..... bang ......you have changed yours twice in a really short time. I totally take my hat off to you!

  44. Gillian, I think you have should market yourself as an interior designer for those of us that live in "humbler" homes! I love the drop down desk, it is just what we need but hadn't seen this one as I have been using the search term "desk" rather than table. IKEA, Edmonton here I come -eek! Alisa

  45. The truckle bed (for that is what they used to be called) is great, ditto the fold-down desk, but best of al I love that pink curtain. Is it actually a curtain or is it a bed sheet turned into a curtain (which would be a brilliant idea) ... the material is so soft and light, just right for a summer bedroom.

    1. I thought they were called truckle beds too, and that I'd just dreamt it! Everyone seems to call them trundle beds now, no idea why. The curtain is a huge, one size fits all, pre-made pink linen curtain set I bought from IKEA. I agree, the pink is lovely for softening the light in that room as it's south facing.

  47. I have wanted to get a trundle bed for a long time. I love the look of yours. Very inspiring.
I was also inspired by the crocheted washcloth and soap teacher gifts in your previous post! I'll have to try to get some of those ready for the Christmas holidays.

  52. Very clever! We need something like this for our spare room, which also doubles as a study. It will take a double bed but that is as often used as a single and something like this would free up a lot of floor space.

The room looks so pretty :)

  57. You've done a fabulous job in there! I love the tie-back...it goes so well with the room and really highlights the curtain. BigR is in our third bedroom and is adamant she doesn't want to swap to the bigger room as she doesn't want any of our stuff in it! We're looking at 'solutions' for her to have a bigger bed and still be able to keep her clothes and a few toys in there! You've really made it a welcoming space for guests :)

  58. Where did your trundle bed come from? Trying to find one where the pulled out mattress can then be elevated is hard. Haven't figured out the right key-word search!

  59. Hi Zee. Yes, it took us ages too. This one came from a lovely local shop here in Leeds called Bedside Manor. We've used them a few times now, I'd really recommend them. (http://www.bedsidemanoronline.com/)
But I know that John Lewis sell them too. I think we used "pull out beds" and "trundle beds" in the searches.
