Style At Home Magazine

A rather exciting thing happened today. August's issue of Style At Home went on sale. Not something I might ordinarily have written in my diary, if I'm honest, but this one was special because our home has been featured! Yes, it's true! I honestly didn't know how to title this post. That Time Our House Was In A Magazine? I Feel Awkward? Fame at Last? I don't know, so I just went with the magazine title. What is the right etiquette in these situations I wonder? Squeal or feign indifference, tell no-one or tell everyone?  I feel funny about this. Mainly VERY excited, thrilled, happy and giddy, but also a little embarrassed, a little shy. Silly I know.

I was wondering how to broach it with friends on Facebook but there was no need, my Mum did it for me. She's been possibly more excited than me and as soon as she'd gotten her hands on a copy, she photographed it, uploaded it and tagged me. (My Mum loves social media. It's only a matter of time before she's on Instagram too, so she can embarrass me there as well.)

↑ I suspect they airbrushed the crumbling render on the front of our house...fine by me! If only it really looked like that.
I always wondered how people got their homes in magazines. Do they email in their photos or are they friends with someone who works on the magazine? Or are they just well connected media types? I thought I'd tell you what happened to me as I am always curious about this sort of thing. Back in February I was contacted by Photoword who look for homes to feature in magazines. They are an independent photographer/writer team, not attached to any one publication. They asked if I was interested and if I could send them some snaps of our house. I was, and I did, and then a few weeks later Colin, the photographer, came and took some "reccy" photos - very quick ones but on a much better camera than mine - to show to a selection magazines. A couple of weeks after that Annabelle, the writer, rang to say that Style at Home were interested and it went from there. Colin came to the house for the day in March (on a gloriously sunny day) and spent all day taking photos. On that morning, there existed a strange state of utter calm, tidiness and cleanliness in our home. It has never been that tidy before and never will again. There's nothing like a photographer coming to motivate me to get those niggley jobs done, sort the piles of clutter, wash the cushion covers.

"Get Gillian's style in 3 buys" - floral suitcase, Orla cushion and fairy lights. Yep, I can't argue with that.
Colin is such a lovely man - I grilled him on everything he knew about photographing houses, the poor man. and he was very patient with me. I was fascinated by all the details - the magazine requested that I didn't wear heavy woollens in the photos, as it would be a summer edition. Also, no daffodils in any photos, as they are too seasonal. Apparently there is a four month delay between writing or shooting for a magazine, and it's release. I've always been curious about Christmas magazine editions - do all those people deck out their house for Christmas in August?! Well, yes they do, although sometimes a house might be photographed in December and then featured the following autumn. Sorry, I am going on a bit here. It's just that, as someone who's been buying "house-porn", as John calls it, since I was 20, I am fascinated by how all this works. Colin came with a boot full of props, just in case I had no vases. Luckily I have plenty. There were lights and tripods and big lenses and I'm kicking myself for not taking some photos while it was all happening. I spent an hour on the phone to Annabelle who asked me all about our house, then she wrote the article as though I'd written it. About a week later the copy and photos were emailed to me so I could check I was happy with it all, and then it went off to the magazine. I didn't get paid. I didn't ask about money and I didn't do it for money. I agreed as I thought is would be a lot of fun, which is was, and an experience that I wasn't likely to ever have again.

I always thought houses that appeared in magazines had to have something that we didn't have, like huge budgets, fabulous locations, and owners who were always architects, bankers or interior designers. I went off a lot of interiors magazines a while ago as they felt too aspirational to me, just too many industrial apartments, vast London townhouses, and ancient farmhouses with acres of land. Where are all the houses that normal people live in, I wondered. Apparently 32% of Brits live in a semi-detached house. How do all these people decorate their homes, that's what I always wanted to know. Well, I think Style At Home is very good at reflecting a more...achievable style of interior design. The emphasis is on high street buys and make it yourself, and I like that very much.

I feel I should point out now that we've had a broken toilet sitting in our drive for the past ten days. The plumber is supposed to have taken it away after replacing the one in the downstairs loo, but he keeps forgetting. If it stays there much longer I'll have to plant a geranium in it.

  1. Wow! Your home looks amazing! Congratulations on being featured-I can't blame your mum for being excited-I'd be shouting it to strangers in the street! x

  2. Well deserved! I adore your 'lived in' homespun aesthetic.

  3. So pleased for you - its so well deserved, your home is even more beautiful than the spread makes it look.

I too have a broken toilet seat in my hall, but no plumber and no unbroken seat replacing it!!

  4. That is pretty darn cool. Your home really is beautiful. Congratulations on being featured. If it helps, we're actually using a broken toilet, right here in the house. :)

  6. I am glad you enjoyed the experience and that is the important thing. However, the magazine does get paid and people who contribute largely get paid too. Many bloggers get exploited because they are flattered etc. It is simply unethical of the magazines to not pay people when they fill up their magazines for them. It is happening more and more. Writers, photographers, crafters, all have been ripped off and do it because they want publicity etc. All well and good but still not on in my book. I just don't buy the magazines anymore when they don't reward their contributors. After all, the editor got paid, the photographers got paid, feature writers get paid, so do stylists and so the list goes on. It is quite a shocking practice actually. It means it becomes harder and harder to use your talents and skills to earn a living as you are increasingly expected to give it for free. If you don't then someone else will..... You may not mind and that is your prerogative but I think creative people deserve to be paid. All of them. I wish you had been paid for those lovely pages.

    1. Hi Penny.

Thank you so for your comment, it was very thought provoking.

When it comes to blogging and making money from blog-related things I am very much feeling my way, learning as I go. I'm never sure what the right or wrong thing to do is and so I trust my instincts. I certainly don't feel exploited in the slightest and look back on all this as a fun and positive experience.

However, I do agree that bloggers can be exploited and that, because many (like me) choose to share things like tutorials for free the expectation is that everything is free, always, I often get emails from people asking basically for free links or plugs and when I tell them what my terms are (which I feel I've earned the right to do through the hard work I've put in building up my blog) they either don't email back, or tell me there is no budget...so they were after a cheeky freebie. That irritates me, yes. And had this been about something I'd made, photographed or written, then I would certainly expect payment, but because someone else did the photographing and writing, I don't feel that I need payment. So I don't feel I've undermined anyone else's ability to make money from their blogs (the magazine have done that, not me - don't shoot the blogger!) but you've certainly given me something to think about Penny, and thank you as I do so enjoy these exchanges of thoughts and ideas!

      warmest wishes,
      Gillian x

  7. Hey Gillian,

You have a really beautiful home, Gillian, and you should be giddy with excitement. O would have pumped Colin for information too. I have been buying house porn (love that) for years. I've weaned my self off of it this year, but I am deffo going to go out and buy a copy of this.

  9. Oh, my gosh, how exciting!! Congratulations! I was just having a laugh at myself this morning because I was up late last night rearranging and pulling out all over my living/dining room. I had pieces on the porch waiting for paint this morning, random shelves pulled apart, piles of everything, everywhere. Hubby normally gets off work at midnight right now, but worked late, so we all stayed up, then slept late. Around 10:30, everyone is finally mostly up, dad's getting doughnuts and coffee, when there is a pounding at the door. I yell, "There's dad, someone open the door for him!", Half naked 5 year old comes running back, "No, it's a guy with the laptop!" Oh, Lord - why, WHY is this when the delivery men come? Fortunately at this point in life I can just laugh. I didn't even give him an explanation! Too funny. And I'm so happy to have my laptop back! Anyway, back to you - so you absolutely feel like a celebrity now? Your home is so lovely, I think one of the best things about it is that it is decorated so beautifully, but doesn't look "showcase-y". It does, indeed, look like a HOME. Where people can enjoy each other's company and relax.

You have REAL, true to life style, congratulations! I think a geranium would look rather pretty in the toilet - set off a new trend in the neighbourhood. Happy week to you, xoJoy

  12. I'm loving your palpable excitement, and all the peeks at corners of your home we don't normally see.

You're braver than me, I'd never be able to do this, but then I'd never be asked, a) because I don't have your style, and b) because of the six resident four-legged home wreckers who so graciously allow us to share their house sized kennel!

It's really interesting to know how the whole process works when photographers come. I suspect I'd have been hanging around Colin too and pestering him with questions!

You deserve to be in that magazine!

  25. How fantastic for you Gillian!!! It must have been very exciting and very interesting to get to know about the process and see how it all works. I do agree with others, I think that some remuneration would have ben appropriate - if nothing else they should have sent you your own copy of the magazine and a couple for friends and family! However, as Sue said, perhaps it will bring other things and if that is the case it is all good in the end. Your house looks fantastic - render and all! - I will try and remember to pick up a copy of this so that I can read the article properly and then I can brag to other people that my bloggy pal had her home featured! Congratulations to you again!! xx p.s. hope that you get the "geranium pot" situation sorted out soon! xx

I'm becoming weary of all the aspirational magazines that I used to enjoy in my 20's. Now, I just want to see how normal people really live and what you have shown in the magazine is an extension of what we have seen in your blog and I really love that. Love your style. A friend of mine will be featured in an interiors magazine in a couple of months and she said there was an entire team of stylists etc in her home for the whole day, lounges were removed, everything else rearranged, things added and the pets were photoshopped out of the photos!!! I've been catching up on your posts as things have been rather hectic round here with all the school assemblies, ballet and tap shows, 2 birthday parties to organise, sports days etc... and I hadn't had the chance to comment.....(every evening I've ended up crashing in the sofa feeling rather exhausted by it all !!). I loved hearing about your camping adventures... they sounded like fun and the idea of having a little wooden hut seems more appealing than a tent... I've never been a fan of camping but glamping seems like a cool option. Your blog hop post was also interesting and I've enjoyed reading about your crafting processes too. I think you have a particular style and colour palette that is very you, I would probably call it a bit "cool retro chic" (if that is a valid definition...). Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the glorious sunshine!! It's wonderful here in London today! Pati xx

  65. Gosh, how exciting! I've often wondered how people get their houses in these magazines too. I also used to buy loads of "house porn" mags when I was younger and also went off them for precisely the same reasons - the houses became too grand and too boring - I much prefer real houses with real stuff. I've just finished redecorating our living room (just putting the last bits back then will photograph it) and to keep me going along the way I kept referring to the cut-outs of my old "housey-mags" as I used to call them that I have kept in various ringbinders. I have about 8(!) ringbinders filled with excerpts, most from the late nineties / early 2000's. I thoroughly enjoyed looking through them as it's been several years since I last did so. 77. Thank you Sue - Penny's comment really got me thinking. It honestly never occurred to me to ask for or expect payment until afterwards. I've replied to Penny's comment in a sort of rambling way, trying to explain my thoughts behind money and blogs. x
