Last Wednesday we visited Morden Hall Park in South London. It was a wet day in a wet week but the rain stopped for a few hours, just long enough for us to get some fresh air and have a wander in this lovely spot. I really like places that are in the middle of cities but don't feel as though they are. Those tucked away spots, green and quiet, which offer the feeling of calm and space. They feel like a secret waiting to be discovered. It was a glorious couple of hours, despite the oppressive grey skies and the threat of more rain at any moment. The children, like dogs let off a leash, ran and jumped and splashed. We admired the rose gardens and played pooh sticks in the stream.
Do you like the rain? I don't much care for it, if I'm honest. It makes me feel depressed, restless and irritable. I, with the weather, usually feel like this: Sunny = happy. Rain = grumpy. I was really interested to read Sarah and Jennifer's recent posts on their love of rain and I learnt a new word: pluviophile. A person who loves the rain. Yes, the logical part of me knows we need rain, our land needs it, the plants need it, my garden needs it, but my mood drops with the barometer. I can feel my whole body relax when the sun comes back out from behind a cloud. I don't mind rain in the evening or at night. In fact, there is something comforting about being tucked up in bed, listening to the rain outside. But during the day? No thanks.
I wonder if there is a word for somebody who love blue skies?
There's bound to be a word for blue sky lovers! These are lovely photos. I don't mind the rain, we've had some great, memorable walks in the rain - sometimes we've got absolutely drenched and then dried out at the top of a windy hill, in the sunshine after rain, sometimes we've got drenched and gone home dripping! Sometimes we've been in waterproofs and stayed dry underneathe. I always enjoy a walk in the rain. Sometimes, the thought of it is off-putting, but once you get out in it, it's such a fun, sensory experience, and then there are those fabulous damp earth smells, the atmosphere rain creates and the lovely sights like raindrops on roses, not to mention the creatures it brings out - snails, slugs, frogs... I'm sure you could learn to love a rainy walk :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks so pretty there, Gillian. The greenness of it...just beautiful. I'm sorry you didn't get better weather for your visit. I do love rain, but primarily when I can stay in the house. I don't like rain on vacation, or during a picnic or any outdoor event. I am not a pluviophile in those instances, not one bit. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting subject you've raised Gillian and I'm wondering if you've ever looked into S.A.D., (seasonal affective disorder), which affects various people when winter type weather sets in. The condition in summer time can include heightened anxiety too and it's now (supposedly) recognised as a common disorder. Symptoms usually clear up with an improvement in light and brightness. Do look it up as there are several sites that cover it, albeit briefly. Although I am usually happy to see rain here in Australia because we need as much as we can get, I also get to feel a bit down with prolonged dark skies! I must be a strange creature for, on the other hand, although I love to see the sunshine, I can't tolerate the heat it often brings us!
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy your post, especially seeing the children in their lovely wellies in the puddles, and the rain drops on roses - a lovely family adventure! xoJoy

ReplyDeleteI love the rain, so I suppose that makes me a 'pluviophile'! We live in Australia so it doesn't rain that often, but when it does it seems to make my soul happy. My husband, being Scottish, thinks I'm just weird!
ReplyDeleteLove your gorgeous photos and your lovely blog!

I agree with you, Gillian. I am a sunny day girl! I like an occasional rainy day, but not very often. The sun just makes me happy, and I always think my house looks better when the sunlight is streaming through the windows.
ReplyDeleteWe do have some beautiful places of interest in England. I love English rose gardens. Like you say the weather can spoil a good day out. If it rained at night, and was sunny in the day that would suit me!!!
ReplyDeletePluviophile! I love new words... And that's a great one.. Will have to use it this week (and looking at he forecast I'll have ample opportunity!). Gorgeous photos, Gillian x
ReplyDeleteThe word you're looking for is 'normal'! I'm getting a bit tired of the rain to be honest... Wet half terms (all playgroups are closed) are hard work! I refuse to hang around shopping centres just because they're under cover.
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the little undiscovered secret in London... And much as the rain needs to back off, it does make your photos look lovely. And kids and wellies are always a good thing!
Glad you had fun.
Sarah x
oh that would be a sunbather! not that we really do that anymore! I have forgiven the rain so far, I don't know how I will feel in July if it's still raining. I must go on a large house day out soon, I do like them too. Heather x
ReplyDeletesuch lovely photos… I love all the raindrops and the reflection of the tree too! incidentally, I've been humming that song to myself :) x
ReplyDeleteStunning photos of the raindrops on roses - I've never noticed before how the rain can enhance flowers, but recently have seen lots of rainy flower pics on blogs.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, now I'm singing that song "Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens", and I'll probably do it for a few hours, but I just love yor post with those photos. I must admit that gloomy days aren't the best and we've had a lot of fog and misty rain over the last few days. It would be nice to see the sun. Seems London has some lovely "secret" places. Take care.
ReplyDeleteWell my dear, I'm a bit like you, them blue skies make my heart sing....the gardener in me knows the rain saves me a job....oh and stops me weeding, so that can't be bad! Have a great week! :) x
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful spot. That pink rose against the brickwork is exquisite. I do love the rain, but I think it's got something to do with being able to stay inside guilt-free. It might be something to do with allotment/garden angst. If it's dry I should be there, weeding and planting. Plus, if it rains, I don't have to water things! I think what I'm trying to say is I'm a bit lazy! But I do so love the sunshine, it does make my mood fly. Let's hope it's a fab summer. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteLovely photos! I certainly love rain in the form of raindrops on roses, is there a name for it? ;) And I love the smell of the forest in rain...
ReplyDeleteI left a comment when Jennifer posted about rain about how I was so glad to see rain when I lived in the US after it had not rained for a long time and then I went outside and stood in the rain. However, rain in England, especially when you are trying to have a holiday or a day out is no fun is it! Somehow I don't mind it if it gets on and rains and then clears up, but it is the grey days that get to me. I am desperate to take some photos and it is just grey grey grey and they could out looking rubbishy! I think that annoys me more than rain thinking about it! Glad that you made the best of things though, the park looks like a lovely place to walk and explore! xx
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the rain, though I try to not let the weather affect my mood. I think it has to do more with the extra work - 6 dogs, rain, and a muddy yard are not exactly the things that make for a happy day. But luckily, we're into the sunny time of year here! Love that little pink one piece rainsuit your little friend is wearing - I didn't know they make such things (I guess in rainy England you'd need those) - perfect for little babes!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for wellies ! Lovely pictures Gillian, especially the one on the bridge.
ReplyDeleteHave a good, and hopefully sunny week,
Kate x
I do prefer blue sky days over rainy days but after 15 years in Scotland, I am well used to a spot of rain. The climate makes me appreciate the good days more I think. Your outing looks like fun despite the rain and the rain drops add interest to an already beautiful photo. x
ReplyDeleteI too am affected by the weather, and usually sunny = happy for me as well. Just like you, I can feel my mood lift and my step become lighter when the sun shines. I, however, don't mind a good soaking rain from time to time...in fact, I almost prefer the rain over a simple cloudy day. I just like to know that my sunny days will come back. Beautiful pictures, as always!
ReplyDeleteWell I love the rain but that's because we get so little of the stuff - it's almost exciting when it rains here! It's mostly chilly in Winter here but with blue skies and I love that (except today which was rainy!). What I don't like is constant grey and drizzly days. I really suffered from this type of weather when I lived in Vancouver even though I absolutely love that City but the weather was kind of depressing. "Seasonal Affective Disorder" is a real 'thing' for Aussies living there...love the shots of your outing - so green and pretty. Mel x
ReplyDeleteAgree, agree, agree! ;) I feel the same way, sun makes me happy, rain is good in it's way but the way it rains in this country, is... challenging sometimes I think. Those days where it's just grey and drizzles all day long - blah! Rain at night is totally acceptable however, as is a sudden storm (occasionally), as long as it's followed by lots of sun.
ReplyDeleteS x
Gorgeous photos and now I can't get the song out of my head! It depends on the day and what I need to do whether I hate the rain or not. Sometimes it can be beautiful like those days when it rains through the sun and the drops sparkle. It's the long relentless grey days which get me down. X
ReplyDeleteSuch cuties in your photos :-)))
ReplyDeleteAnd when it comes to rain, I'm with you ! It can fall as much as it wants - but during the night ;-)
I don't mind the occasional summer shower, but please, maximum one hour... Otherwise my mood tends to change...
I love your pictures so much and I LOVE rain. I love to hear it, smell it and listen to it pitter patter against my windows. I also love gray cloudy days. Living in Florida it is always so bright out, I think I am living in the wrong area.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
I like the rain, it means I don't have to walk up to the allotment and water it! Today on a school trip i was helping at, a little girl said I have got my wellies and my hole-in-one in my bag! - She meant her all in one waterproof and that little pink one reminded me of that story from my day. Thanks Jo x
ReplyDeleteI think we all had more than enough rain last winter in the UK, I don't mind a bit of warm summer rain if it get me out of watering the garden, but only over night not during the day, I can but dream
ReplyDeleteClare x
Glad you had a lovely day despite the rain. Your photos of the roses with the raindrops are so beautiful. I'm not really a big fan of the rain, I much prefer sunny days and my mood is definitely lifted when the sun is shining. Unfortunately in Scotland we get an awful lot more rain than sun!
ReplyDeleteMarianne x
Lovely pics Gillian, especially the first and last of the rain-soaked roses. Glad you had a lovely day out, despite the rain. It's not the rain that I dislike, it's the gloomy dull atmosphere that is needed to make it. Mr. Blue Sky (cue ELO!) is much better. Have a lovely week.

Hi Gillian, I love sunny days , but I really appreciate living somewhere that has distinct seasons. This winter was so mild it made me feel uneasy....I don't like extreme cold but it didn't seem right to barely get any frost.
ReplyDeleteWhen it's summer I'm sad if it rains a lot........the low light levels are rather depressing and rubbish for photography...which I love.
Your photos are great despite the weather. Glad you had a happy half term break.

While I am not keen on the inconvenience of rain sometimes, I especially enjoy it when I can be safe and dry watching it, hearing it, and smelling it. Thanks for sharing all your lovely photos of your raindrops on roses and little ones prepared to splash through puddles. xx
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the rain when it's been so hot and dry for many days. In fact I welcome it. But I'm not a big fan when it's cold and wet most days. I don't like not being able to take out the washing and everything's taking ages to dry.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had fun despite the weather. Lovely photos too! x
I think rain is fine if you're dressed for it and not caught out - that little pink rainsuit is just perfect for children, do you know where it's from? Although I had some all-in-one rain suits for my girls years ago, it's hard to find any for my grandchildren, who love being outdoors in all weathers… the only ones we've seen cost and arm and a leg rather than the simple cagoule-style my kids had :(
ReplyDeleteI don't, I'm sorry. I think they are quite widely available here but I'm not sure they're that cheap - you're probably looking at £20 - £30 for one.
DeleteI think I love the rain and sun in equal measure ... I especially like the clean, damp smell after the rain and the sticky warmth as the sun appears after a thundery shower ... weeks on end of rain I don't like so much ... hope the sun shines for you soon ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteHello Gillian!
ReplyDeletethe first photo of a raindropped rose is just gorgeous!! I am like you when it comes to the rain.... I love the 4 seasons though so I don't mind a crappy winter as long as there is a good summer afterwards....
This year I noticed that it's rained quite a bit particularly at drop off and pick up times..... I hope the sun comes back soon....
I had never heard of Morden Hall Park but it looks good.... Pati x
Here we are one week later and it's wednesday and surprise surprise it's raining! It does get me down sometimes when there doesn't seem to be any end to it. I know we need the rain (sometimes!) but can't we have a fair share of sun as well, sunday here was beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAt least when it rains, and those drops hit the roses, they give off the most wonderful perfume, pity we have to stand outside with an umbrella to appreciate it.
Glad you were able to still enjoy your walk in the park.
Those roses are beautiful, even in the rain!! I used to hate rain, now, I just don't like it. Pluviophile, thanks for this one, it will stay in my mind.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful roses - I can almost smell them.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous rain splattered roses.
ReplyDeleteMy son loves the rain, on Christmas day he went outside and stood in the hail shower, strange boy!
Lisa x
I usually don't mind the rain; although fair weather is my preference. The rain has really gotten me down this time though. it just seemed to be relentless! In my mind, you can't beat a cold clear October day really. So good to see you have a fab time whatever the weather.
ReplyDeleteI like a good mix of sunny and rainy days. I get antsy when there's too much of one thing. Same reason I like the seasons. But when I'm feeling down, I find the rain comforting. It's like the world is commiserating with me.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your lovely photos. They reminded me of a visit to a rose garden in New York a few years back. A very good memory.
I'm like you, give me rain when I'm cosy indoors at night, but give me a blue sky in the morning for real happiness. Sometimes I even feel like a grey day doesn't "really happen" - as if because I can't see the movement of the sun the hours are not really passing. Which is silly, but a good excuse to do not much some days ;-) Had a little giggle at the second use of pluviophile on that link ...
ReplyDeleteHello, just discovered you blog via Kate at Just Pootling.....Modern Hall Park caught my eye as,I did a blog post on it a couple of weeks ago!! Agree with the rain.....Love it at night, not so much love when I am in it or it is trying to spoil my plans xx
