Oh man. What a week. It's been busy (when isn't it?), I've been under the weather, and I've been trapped in a crochet panic, which is thankfully now over, and I feel all discombobulated and unsettled. I find the longer the gaps between blog posts, the harder it is to sit down and write one. Odd, that. It's like I can feel myself drifting away form this space. The more regularly I post the more connected I feel to this blog, and to you all.
1. Ok, the first reason for happiness (or maybe relief?) is that I finished this cushion. It very nearly killed me off. Ages ago, I agreed to make it for a dear friend - she was giving it to her sister for her birthday, and paying me, so it was a commission I suppose. I totally left it until the last minute and started it on Saturday. I finished it on Thursday about half an hour before she came to collect it. Stressful, anxiety-dream crochet. Not relaxing, oh no. I avoided facebook, instagram and ironing. It's amazing what you can achieve if you avoid those distractions.
So I learnt two lessons this week. This first is don't agree to crochet things which take 15 or 20 hours to make when you're drunk. The second is agree a price first and ask for double what you think you should. I don't regret making it though - the look on my friend's face made it all worthwhile, she properly beamed and her face lit up, and I thought "I made that!"
2. Wild flowers and coffee.
What with all that crochet, and John's ridiculous shift pattern at work, we've spent precious little quality time together lately. On Wednesday we popped over to Saltaire for a wander and a coffee. I saw the most beautiful wild flowers growing along the edge of a footpath.
We had a coffee (well I did, John ordered this milkshake) and talked about things we never seem to be able to talk about in the house, there are just too many distractions. It did us good.
3. Bella spotted this violet growing between two paving slabs on the drive. Her delight was delightful to me - she made us all look at it, then she put it in this egg cup. I love her.
Bella is at Brownie Camp this weekend. The cabin is in the most beautiful spot, just outside Ilkley, with incredible views across the dales, a stream and a big meadow.
I dropped her off this evening. If she doesn't cry, I wont cry, I thought, and she didn't so I didn't. I miss her. She looked happy and independent in her uniform, with her bags. I hugged her four times (for tonight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow night and Sunday morning). John is working all weekend. Angus and I were both a bit lost when we came home, but it will be lovely to have some time just with my boy.
Wow! Those wildflowers are beautiful. I love to crochet, I love the 'I made that!' feeling too, haha. It's always sad + lovely to see your little one grow independence, but like you said it can be just you and the boy :)
ReplyDeleteLove your blog so much! Followed with GFC x

Hope you have a lovely weekend with your little man Gillian ... your cushion is beautiful ... I'm not surprised your friend loved it ... and I know what you mean about the time between posts ... I am going through a phase at the minute where I'm so busy I don't have the time to create or post the way I want too and then when I do sit down to post I don't seem to be able to focus ... I hope these feelings pass ... I love blogging and would really miss it I think ... anyway now I'm rambling ... night Bee xx
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cushion, a beautiful gift.
ReplyDeleteMy two older ones are at Scout camp just now. It is so good for children to be independent and adventurous but I always miss them a little (but not their mess). The cushion you made is beautiful, well done for finishing on time. Just got back from a night out (tipsy, very) and it is nice to finish the day with your happy post. Have a lovely weekend with Angus. xx
ReplyDeleteCushion is beautiful, what a wonderful gift! Have a great weekend
ReplyDeletewhat a treasure---did you really make it in just 20 hours? my goodness.......it would have taken me FOREVER! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteThe wildflowers are so pretty! And I am so glad you had some one on one time with your husband... so important during busy times. His milkshake looks really yummy! The little violet Bella picked is precious, and she sounds like a precious child. I know how you must feel after dropping her off at camp today. I probably would have cried all the way home. It's not easy letting our little ones grow up. Charlotte asked me to give her lots of kisses this morning, and of course, I did. I felt myself tearing up just thinking about her growing up and how I wish I could keep her little. Oh, I love my sweet girlie so much! Thinking of you this weekend while Bella is away. I know you miss her, but hopefully you and Angus will have some great one on one time together.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely cushion! I had a "friend" once tell me(!) that she had a quilt she wanted me to "sew up" for her. Like it was something you just whipped out in a couple hours. Another "friend" (believe it or not, "friend" no 1's daughter), upon seeing I had managed to eek out enough time to make a dress for baby no. 5, said, "I see you have enough time for sewing now, I have some things I want you to make". I am now pretty firm about telling people that I am more than happy to TEACH them to make THEIR OWN things!!! You were a very sweet friend to make the cushion, and a real friend, like yours obviously is, shows gratitude and appreciation for your time - her happiness showed, and she sounds willing to pay what you ask. The wildflowers are very beautiful. I love foxglove, and can't wait to get some planted. We are rebuilding our front porch soon, so the flower beds are dirt/weed beds, haha. My 11 year old getting ready for his first camp adventure next month. He will love it so much. I never went to camps, I preferred staying home with my nose in a book! Haha, still my idea of a good time.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and Angus have a wonderful weekend together. I bet Bella is having a ball with her Brownie camp, such an exciting thing to do.
ReplyDeletePretty wildflowers, makes you want to go outside and bring in lungfuls of fresh air!

A beautiful cushion, however stressful it was to crochet. I know what you mean about not being able to blog the longer you stay away. I didn't blog for a couple of weeks once and it was very hard to know what to say when I came back. No doubt Bella will have the most wonderful time at camp, and what amazing weather. It sounds like she is in the perfect spot. I hope you enjoy the weekend anyway, CJ xx
ReplyDeleteOh my - crochet on demand... I avoid it... Too worried they will not like it/that I don't finish it on time/etc...
ReplyDeleteBut your cushion is just perfect !
Ps love the little drawing of the dachshund, next to your husbands' milkshake :-))))
Sorry to hear that you haven't been so good this week, I hope that you are feeling better now. Your cushion looks great, and I am sure that whatever your friend paid they would have happily paid more! It will be a great present. Hope that Bella has a good time at camp and that you and Angus have a nice time together as well! xx
ReplyDeleteI really and truly don't think I could ever crochet to order - I just know I would be a blithering heap. Your cushion looks fabulous though, well done you! I have some very strict 'squiffy' rules which include no social networking, no texting, no making promises …
ReplyDeleteHope you're feeling better, flower. Enjoy your Angus time!
Hxx
crochet to a deadline and getting ready for brownie camp sounds like a stressfull mix! I agree we should probably double what we do charge.....I've found it easier to go with what needs doing this month than blog! enjoy some slower time and have a peaceful solstice! Heather X
ReplyDeleteOh, Robin Hole, lucky girl! We've had many happy weekends there.
ReplyDeleteBoy, do I recognise all this! Caught in one panic or other; busy, busy and then busy some more. Hope you can catch your breath with your boy. I love those times when I'm alone with mine.
ReplyDeleteAll the best there xxx
Oh you do feel at a sea, Gillian, I can feel it. You will be posting more happies very soon. Brownie camp - happy memories for me and they will be for her too. Jo x
ReplyDeleteOh, that rather takes the pleasure out of crocheting doesn't it, what a shame, but a beautiful cushion in the end. no wonder your friend was delighted. It is sad but at the same time exciting seeing your children develop into independent human beings, it is the start of a whole life full of adventures. Enjoy your weekend with Angus, one to one time is precious but always fun.
ReplyDeleteCaz xx
I loved Brownie Camp, despite getting whacked in the eye with a stick ( I still have the scar to prove it). I love your posts and for that reason I have nominated you here - http://alittlebitcountrynz.blogspot.com/2014/06/sowhy-do-i-blog.html - Enjoy your weekend! xo
ReplyDeleteHope you have a fun and relaxing weekend with Angus. Bella's cabin looks great!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cushion ... I'm not surprised your friend beamed!
ReplyDeleteI so know what you mean about drifting away a bit if you go too long between posts. Although I am always really happy to return to my blog, and glad when you post on yours. Is it just me, or are almost all the blogs quieter than normal at the moment?
Enjoy your weekend with Angus, crochet free I'm assuming ;)
Lovely cushion Gillian, I can see why your friend looked so pleased! I hope Bella enjoys Brownie camp, my girls went to a couple of those too: a whole weekend without TV, computers, phones, etc., the children all have a wonderful time - big respect to scout leaders everywhere. Have a lovely weekend with Angus.

I'm a Brownie leader, just back from a day spent with 800 Brownies celebrating the Big Brownie birthday - hope Bella has a great time on camp, residential trips are the best things about Brownies!
ReplyDeleteI occasionally wonder if I should consider selling some of my crafts but as quick as the thought comes it vanishes as I always think the 'must do' nature of it would take away the pleasure and make it work and a chore. I always underestimate the time spent crafting as it really does fly. What I remember as a couple of hours crocheting in front of the tv is often a good 6-8hr stint! So I'd be rubbish at working out the time needed to complete. My fun and pleasure is in doing it as a hobby and surprising the ones I love with a gift literally made just for them.
ReplyDeleteFirst off I want to mention that what you said in your first paragraph re blogging is exactly how I feel too Gillian!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry the cushion raised the stress levels so high but boy, didn't you make a very pretty piece there and I'm sure it's recipient will love it. I love Bella's violet in the eggcup and your pic of the wildflowers, even though reminders of Soltaire bring back mixed memories for me - we lost our sister (my in-law) to ovarian cancer some time after having a wonderful visit there with her.
I trust that you and Angus are enjoying this weekend together and that you are feeling better, xoJoy
I hope you enjoy a lovely weekend with your little boy...one on one time is so precious.
ReplyDeleteThe pillow is beautiful!
Gillian, I am sorry you were unwell. In spite of that and your challenging time frame you made a really lovely cushion...I love the balance of colors and the pattern. I hope Bella has a grand time and that you and Angus make wonderful memories together. I just took some photos of some wildflowers by our pond that look like your wildflowers across the pond :) Happy Summertime! xx
ReplyDeleteThe cushion is stunning. Enjoy your quality time with Angus. they are young for such a little time.
ReplyDeleteJacqui x
Happy Summer Solstice to you. Lovely wild flowers and fab cushion too... Cx
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately that's why I've avoided commissions. After doing a couple of "asked for" things I realised it gave me no joy, just stress! It is a lovely cushion though so you should be very proud of it :-)
ReplyDeleteLesson 2 should be "don't agree anything when drunk" and I think should also apply if you're "super happy"; I've agreed to many a thing while on a high and then afterwards thought to myself "why on earth!"
That cushion is gorgeous. I'm not surprised your friend beamed when she saw it (and I bet her sister did too when she got it)! I also learnt a valuable lesson this month - I helped an acquaintance out with with some design work and only agreed on a price when I halfway through the job. Not ideal, as I spent a significant amount of time on it for a rather insignificant amount of money. Ah well, you live and you learn! I'll know better next time. Enjoy your reunion with Bella :-) x
ReplyDeleteI'm sure she'll have an amazing time x
ReplyDeleteThe cushion looks gorgeous, well done for getting it done in time! I've found it can be quite a minefield doing commisions for friends, I always undercharge quite a lot and feel anxious that it won't be liked :-(
Hope you had a lovely weekend with your son! x
I bet she loved it! And the cushion looks gorgeous. Probably time for me to turn off the computer and get crocheting!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm writing this on Sunday evening so I do hope you are feeling much better and have had a chance to unwind :-)
ReplyDeleteI love your crochet cushion and the flower in the egg cup.

Sounds a very hectic week. Hope you're feeling better now and that Bella had a great Brownie weekend. I love the cushion. Each time I see something beautiful you've made I feel inspired to learn to crochet. Maybe soon :) Saltaire is beautiful (and that diner...I could eat everything!) I know what you mean about having time together to talk - something else is always a distraction if you're at home! Have a good week xx
ReplyDeleteThe violet in the egg cup is beautiful, such lovely colours. Your crochet cushion is gorgeous, it does sound stressful though. Hope you have fully recovered!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you made that cushion so quickly and it is amazing! I often think that making a living from hand crafted items would be impossible, at 20 hours of minimum wage plus the materials you should be charging at least £160. I bet it is going to be really well loved though. Oh those lupins, so lovely. Xxx
