Oh, I am tired. Tired and slow. I just managed to to write a post, publish it, go back in to amend it because I forgot to credit something then, while updating it, accidentally delete the whole thing. Yes, I am tired.
Anyway, lets try again. It was a slow weekend as Bella was unwell. One ill child equals two tired adults and we are all taking it easy. We had a really nice day on Saturday - we went into town to buy ballet and tap shoes for Bella and had lunch out. But by Saturday tea time Bella was pale and had no appetite, she even refused pizza for tea. We were all up a lot throughout Saturday night and by Sunday morning I felt grey with tiredness. The children sleep well now, and I'd forgotten what broken night's sleep feels like. Did we really do this every night when they were small? We must have.
So on Sunday we cancelled our plans and had a sofa day. Blankets, tv (Winter Olymics, hooray!) and lots of crochet. Bella, usually a very independent and self sufficient thing, was tied to me all day with an invisible elastic band. She had to be near me. It was strange but nice too. She even fell asleep on me. I got a lot of work done on Angus's scarf.
It's almost finished now - just the ends to darn in. I also spent some time exploring a new cookery book, baking spiced ginger cake (a bit like parkin) and "flappenjacken" (a cross between a flapjack and a cake). Both were good - heavy and wintry, but good - and I want to try out the savoury recipes now, there are lots of nice looking pastries and breads in there.
Bella stayed home from school today. She's still subdued but much perkier than she was yesterday. She requested hot blackcurrant squash, hama beads and jigsaws.
I was happy to oblige. I am having so much fun with Hama beads lately! This pattern below is from Alicia Paulson's Embroidery Companion. John gave it to me for my birthday last year and I haven't managed to sew any of the gorgeous patterns in there, but I did re-create one with beads. Go me.
Mmm, poached eggs on toasted rye bread for lunch. Whenever I cook poached eggs I wonder why I don't eat them every single day, they are so perfect.
I meant to say - thank you for all your feedback, ideas and comments regarding Bella and Angus sharing a room. It's going well, except for one thing: light. Bella likes a firmly closed door and total darkness, whereas Angus prefers a night light on, door wide open and the landing light on too, thank you very much. It's been a lesson in compromise. Now, the door is left ajar and Angus has this adorable night light which fits on his shelf nicely. It's battery operated and portable, which makes it excellent for lighting dens made from blankets and chairs too.
I have been thinking about our home. About how it's not big or desirable, about the long list of jobs that need to be done, the dreadful state of the exterior render, the sometimes-leaking roof. But when we are tired and ill and in need of comfort, what we've created within these four walls offers us just that - comfort.
Nice Hama bead take on the Blossom Napkin from "Embroidery Companion"---am I right? Or perhaps they both came from the same third source? Anyway, I've been reading your blog for a month or so, and heartily enjoy it...thanks!
ReplyDeleteHello - gosh, you just reminded me that I didn't credit the image! Thank you.
DeleteWith you totally Gillian, Martha has had a sickness bug all Weekend so I'm one tired mummy today, luckily my mum and Dad took her today as I was at work and on serious auto pilot. Martha has had a great day drawing and colouring with grandpa. Glad Bella is feeling better...hopefully a better nights sleep for both households tonight. Hugs Elisa Xx
ReplyDeleteHope Bella is fully recovered soon. Like you, if Matt is ever ill now and I am up through the night, I wonder how I ever used to function!
ReplyDeleteHoping for some sunshine soon to make us all feel better - she says optimistically!
What a lovely post. I hope your little Miss is well again soon. Yes we forget all too soon what they were like as babies. I am so broody but then I remember 'those nights' and I think again, especially as the man is off to the Navy.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo hungry and that cake looks and sounds so delicious and those poached eggs YUM!
Hama beads look like a lot of fun. I think my little ones would like them too...
Oh and I know what you mean about the house. I feel the same about mine but it is what is inside that matters and yours is clearly full of love x
ReplyDeleteGlad Bella is on the mend. I dont know how I did without sleep when they were babies as it takes me about a fortnight to recover if we ever have a dodgy night - lol xx Your house is lovely, but I know what you mean, mine is getting decidedly grubby and its starting to bug me xx
ReplyDeleteSounds like Bella has what Harry had. He bounced back after a couple of days. Then we got it and felt like pants for about a week! And your house is always lovely so don't worry so much. X
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard when they're sick. I hope the rest of you stay well. Your home looks beautiful to me, but I don't live in it, so it's not for me to say you should think any differently about it. I feel the same way about mine; there are so many things we still want to do around here, but in general, it's perfectly fine for us. It could be bigger, always. I long for a whole room to myself for crafts, with a huge worktable and glass-front cabinets for my yarn and fabric, but it will be years before I can have such a fanciful space - if I even want it anymore by then. We make do and it usually works. I hope you can get some good rest tonight.
ReplyDeleteComfort is right, that is the difference between a house and home. I hope that Bella is better soon, ickies are horrible for all concerned, so I hope that she feels better. Your newest coaster is very pretty, I can see that next Christmas may be all about the coaster for your lovely gifts!! They would be great because you could personalise them to each person's likes or colour scheme couldn't you. Keep going Gillian, you will get there in the end. xx
ReplyDeleteI know the tired thing too. Yesterday I tried to empty the linen/laundry basket into the outside wheelie bin, I somehow ended up in my back street with the dirty laundry instead of going down to the washing machine in the cellar!
ReplyDeleteSending bright, happy upbeat vibes your way xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I know what you mean about having broken sleep it really takes it out of you when our kids get sick. Good thing you decided to stay home and be slow, the best form of recovery for all I think. I do hope your Bella gets better soon, so many bugs and nasties going around at this time of year. I couldn't agree more about the comforts of home, once I am inside I feel so like me and don't fret too much that we don't live on the pretties street in the town. Take care lovely and keep being a wonderful mama to your sweet children xox
ReplyDeleteSo sorry Bella felt poorly, Gillian, and I hope you all can get plenty of rest and have a happier week! Clumps of ice and snow are falling from the huge cherry tree outside my window and schools are still closed. I am enjoying knitting my blue Merino wool blanket with a cup of tea at the ready :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I had my daughter when I was younger and had more stamina as i don't think I could cope with the broken nights now. Loving Angus's night light :)
ReplyDeleteHope Bella gets better very soon, Gillian. My littlest one is sick also and I cannot remember the amount of glasses of water he requested last night.... Poor thing, though! We are also into hama beads here at the moment and we love them! I'll soon have to buy more as some of the colours have already gone! I really enjoyed reading your post on the bedroom change. At the moment my three kids are sleeping in the same room and there's never been a problem but I will have to move my son to the attic room in the summer as we want to get rid of his cot. I feel that he may not like being upstairs on his own...., though!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a relaxing and cozy evening, Pati x
Hope Bella is still on the mend and give her a big hug from down under. Yes, tired is a word I can relate to at the moment, with our move only just behind us and the extreme hot weather. Your cake looks rather yummy and once settled and "cooler", I'll be able to cook again too. Take care.
ReplyDeleteFlappenjacken! Wonderful! I absolutely must make this just for the pleasure of using the word. Sorry Bella's been unwell, I do hope she's completely better soon. I know what you mean about the horror of having a broken night thrust upon you when you're out of training for such things. It does sound like you had a nice day on the sofa together though. I'm quite enjoying the bit of the Winter Olympics I've seen. Although I'm not quite as keen as the boys are on watching an endless stream of chaps hurtling down an ice chute on a tea tray. We've had some figure skating on the kitchen floor as well. Happy days.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear your post was deleted - that is the absolute pits, but, you've redone it beautifully, Gillian, with all your pics, makes, and stories! Not nice for poor Bella being sick or for you and hubby being worn out so I hope you are all fully recovered soon. You've done a lovely job with Angus' scarf and I love Bella's ballet shoes - they remind me of my daughter's red ones from her childhood which she has lovingly kept and displays in her home.
ReplyDeleteAh Gillian, there's no place like home is there, especially when you can have the comfort of delicious cake and poached eggs on toast - not together of course! Take care, hugs, Joy xo
I am glad to hear Bella is starting to feel better. And I hope you are getting some much needed rest. My husband was sick most of last week with a cold and bronchitis. I managed to keep Charlotte and myself well, thank goodness. I really love the first photo of your mantle, and the reflection of the gorgeous blue sky with fluffy clouds. It's so cold a rainy here today, and we are expecting about 5 -7 inches of snow the next two days. I'm ready for Spring!!
ReplyDeleteI hope Bella continues to get better and you all get some well earned rest. My older daughter wasn't well the previous weekend and we were up in the night a few times too. Thankfully she got better the next day and her sister didn't catch whatever bug it was she had.
ReplyDeleteI really love that photo of the poached eggs. I'd love to eat one of those now! One of my girls has the same rabbit night light. They'll be sharing a bedroom this spring and your post about Bella and Angus bedroom sharing has been helpful. Thanks!
Marion x
So Bella's been ill but glad she's recovering, Mmmm poached eggs on toast! Just the thing to perk you up.
ReplyDeleteJacqui xx
Meant to write sorry not so. Losing the plot x
ReplyDeleteHi Gillian, your cake and poached eggs look so appetising (made me feel hungry!). Angus's little nightlight is sweet, the dark can be a bit scary for young and active imaginations (I remember seeing things come out of the wardrobe). Those little dancing shoes took me back - I still have my youngest daughter's first pink ballet shoes, they are tiny; however, today is her 19th birthday, so she's grown out of them somewhat. Hope that Bella is making a speedy recovery and that your energy levels have improved! Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteJane xx
It's not nice to be ill but at least you had a lovely cosy, snuggly, lazy Sunday. Strange that you deleted your post by mistake, I did that too with my last post. I'd just finished it, the grandchildren ran in, I went to make a quick alteration before closing the page and deleted it, instead!
ReplyDeleteHome is where your family is, it is that simple. You make the place your are in your home by all the little magic touches you do to create a warm, loving environment. The poor little one, cherish these times because they grow up and gorw away from falling asleep on their Mum when they are not feeling well.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
Oh, poor little sweetie...being sick is never any fun, neither is being up all night. I do hope the rest of you stay healthy.
ReplyDeleteI adore the little rabbit nightlight!
I love cardamom; always put it in my homemade chai. The cake looks yummy! I think a smaller house is much more cozy and more of a "home" than a huge house filled with tons of furniture and "things".
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful room for your little ones! You've made it look so lovely. Hopefully Bella is better (and enjoying the ginger cake).
ReplyDeleteDenise
Such beautiful photos, everything just looks so lovely. I could eat those poached eggs right now! Love what you are doing with the beads, so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThis is a rich post. We also have so much to do in our home, renovations and fixing things... But as you, somewhere I think we have been able to create a comforting place. I hope Bella is much better. so many kids, and even adults, have been sick lately... Your poached eggs on rye bread looks so yummy, but I have never been able to do decent poached eggs... I might give it another try. And I will look at this cooking book as I can never have enough cooking books...
ReplyDeleteI am in the midst of continuous sleepless nights so I know how you feel! Last night was particularly bad as the baby has a runny nose and struggled to feed. Fingers crossed to night is better - I am so tired!
ReplyDeleteGlad Bella is better - it's so awful when they're ill! x
I hope Bella is feeling much better by now.
ReplyDeleteI must that cake looks like one of the most delicious things I've ever seen!
And poached eggs, just perfect, love them to bits, with black pepper.
Lisa x
I hope Bella is feeling better and you're feeling a bit more like it. I'm really enjoying the the Winter Olympics. Poached eggs on toast...yum. Sarah xo
ReplyDeleteCooking with cardamon is my absolute favourite. I made the Jamie Oliver Swedish Buns last week and they were gorgeous and the leftover ones that went stale made amazing bread and butter pudding :)
ReplyDeleteI do hope Bella is all better now :)
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about my own home ... be it ever so humble and all that. Frequently my living room is strewn with dog blankets and dogs, and just as with very small children precious things need to be kept out of reach of inquisitive hounds ... but it still offers sanctuary and that is the most important things.
Hope Bella is all good and well! And, oh my goodness, I love I Want My Hat Back. :)
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I hate it when that happens :( Sometimes you can hit ctrl + z on your keyboard but it doesn't always bring it back.
ReplyDeleteHope Bella is feeling much better now. Angus' scarf is looking fab! Darn those ends in though so you don 't have to do them all at once ;-)
