A Project To Distract You From A Gale Force Wind

Wow, did you hear that wind last night? Incredible. We were all sitting at the table, eating dinner at about 6 pm and suddenly we heard a big thump up on the roof. A tile had blown off and landed on the extension roof (which is single storey), smashing a tile there on it's way down. It missed the glass roof light by a few inches! Lucky. I never knew a falling tile made so much noise - it sounded like someone had thrown a full suitcase out of one of the upstairs windows. This morning we discovered quite a few had blown off in the night. A very kind roofer fit us in on what must be the busiest day he's had this year, and patched the roof so it's doesn't leak. He's coming back tomorrow to fix it properly. Our roof isn't in great condition and a new roof has been on the cards for some time...maybe a little sooner than later now.

But with the awful howling gale and creaking windows and general windiness of it all, I just couldn't relax last night. John was pacing, on falling tile alert, convinced the next one would go through the car windscreen. So we ended up watching a no-brainer action film and I rummaged in my yarn basket, looking for the perfect project. Something non-taxing, no pattern, no decisions, low concentration. I dug out my blanket and got going and it was just what I needed, calming and soothing, hooking and darning. I've made 75 squares now. I reckon I need 225 altogether (15 x 15 squares) and this morning, I laid them all out and felt quite excited. I can start to imagine how it will all look when it comes together and feel spurred on to complete this blanket.

I have about thirty squares waiting for their final white round too, ready in the bag by the sofa for when I have a moment.

In other yarn related news, I unraveled my knitted alpaca cowl, the one with the huge error. I thought about pulling it back to where it went wrong but was worried I wouldn't be able to pick the stitches up correctly. And there were so many dropped stitches and tension issues beyond that point, it didn't really seem worth salvaging.

And do you know, pulling it back, unraveling those hours and hours of knitting - it wasn't that bad. I thought it would be more painful than that but weirdly it felt satisfying.

Also, my mother in law gave me this cowl for Christmas. It's exactly the same as the one I was knitting (she copied out the pattern I was using when I wasn't looking!) and, as you can see, it's perfect. I think her choice of yarn shows off the pattern better actually, it's less fluffy.

She made mittens too, aren't they gorgeous? She is a very talented knitter.

So now I have two 50 gram balls of alpaca yarn and I'm wondering what to knit with them. I want to knit them, rather than crochet as I have a lot of crochet on the go at them moment. I'm thinking maybe a hat or mitts? Something easy. Not a cowl! The knitted alpaca cowl is cursed.

I finished Angus's scarf, at last. Oh I was sick of those colours! But then someone on Instagram said how they reminded her of blue skies, yellow sun and fluffy white clouds and that made me like the colours a little more.

Angus likes his scarf a lot, but I think that's more to do with the fact that it's like Daddy's, and of course dog has a matching one too, rather than any love of Leeds United Football Club.

I hope you've not been too adversely affected by this crazy weather. I know our falling tiles gave us some mid-week drama but we are thankful everyday that we're not flooded or without power. It could be a lot worse.

  1. Your squares are fantastic, I love the colors so much. I've just started something similar and I'm forcing myself to do them randomly, not to worry about using the colors equally, and it's really hard. It goes against every fiber of my being! Your blanket is going to be so beautiful. I'm sorry the cowl didn't work out but I'm glad it wasn't too bad taking it apart. You'll find your way back to it again sometime. The scarves look wonderful together and I love that the dog gets one too. Your mother-in-law is truly talented! Those are beautiful and I think the color will suit you.

  2. Oh Gillian I'm totally with you about last night, I'd never heard anything like it, my fence is on its last legs and we ended up with half of someone's shed roof in our front garden.
I'm loving that cowl and mitts, fabulous colour too.
I need to get back to my circles for my blanket....you've inspired me.

  3. The blanket looks great already. The wind was quite something, in Skipton i think i felt our house shake for the first time. Is the alpaca yarn dk or 4ply? Maybe a simple triangular shawl to wrap bandana style or ysolda teague has designed some fingerless mits to be knitted on straights with short rows, that i have knitted several times. I have recently found your blog and have really enjoyed looking back at the variety of crafts in your archives. Nina

  4. One of the fence panels has come loose but otherwise we seem to have come off unscathed. Mind you I did forget to check my roof this morning and it's too dark to see it now. Loving your blanket and colour choices. x

  7. We thought we had got away with it as it was business as usual until about 9pm but then it reached us. I was woken at midnight by our electric wire banging on the house, it has come down before and has been fixed crudely to the house. In the morning we had a neighbours tree in our garden, thankfully it missed the polytunnel! It hasn't really abated today, I have been busy trying to ignore it :)

  8. Oh what a lovely gift to get off your MIL. Yes it was rather windy last night, now one here could sleep very well, both boys were up. There is a building site ion the field behind our house and it was very noisy. You are really talented and creative

  9. Thank goodness for knitting/crochet when you're on tenterhooks. Must say we are lucky, in North Somerset and all I can complain about is only cycling 2 days out of 4 this week and Tues/Weds really was stupidly dangerous even if my route is on a bike path not roads. Not sure when the end is in sight but the yarn never runs out! Your blanket squares are gorgeous.

  10. Hey Gillian,

I think my comment on your last post got lost. Never mind. I do like your squares. Gorgeous colours. The wind has been howling here too. Luckily no tiles have been blown off the roof. I have a lot of palm leaves in my pond and in the garden. But no flooding, thank goodness.

  12. The weather has been rather alarming (I was on the phone to my Mum yesterday as they live in Surrey and I was getting a bit worried) but we've been lucky here-no major damage as yet. Your blanket wip is looking lovely! Crochet/knitting is so fantastic for mental distraction-productive as well as relaxing.
It's a shame about the cowl but I'm sure you'll find another project for the yarn-how nice of your MIL to make you a set of a cowl and mittens, she's very talented indeed :-)

(Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog-the most recent and all the others! My daughter is hopefully over the worst of whatever bug she had and I hope your little ones are completely better now too x)

Stay safe and warm-I hope your roof doesn't require much work!

    1. The pattern is from a book called Granny Squares by Susan Pinner. I love your idea of a runner for your poang chair - we have one in brown leather and I don't love it, I must say. A cover of some kind would be fun! x

I love the scarf, and your crochet squares are so bright and cheery.

  21. It's so nice that the dog has a scarf too! ;-) Angus's scarf somehow reminds me of Gryffindor scarves (stripes, not colours of course).

  27. So sorry to read about your midweek drama - that wind & storm really was quite scary... I'm keeping a close eye on the trees in our garden. Glad you were able to get a roofer out to secure things quite quickly. Your blankie is going to be so beautiful and how lucky are you to have such a talented mum-in-law - love the pretty green. How about a beanie hat with the alpaca yarn?
Have a happy weekend - stay safe & dry,

  28. I LOVE the fact that the dog has a scarf too!! Boo to falling tiles. We too have roof woes - not wind induced but the bucket loads of rain definitely don't help. It's raining heavily as I type. Ugh. Hope the weather settles down up there soon.
I said it on IG already, but I so love the colours you've chosen for your blanket. Muted yet wonderfully colourful too. x

  29. I love all the yarn eye candy on your post today. I have a very similar beige yarn and I had a hard time making it into something, it is a beautiful color but needs a bit of pop in the pattern tom make it shine the way it is meant to. When I unravel a project I am a bit flustered at first, but then I realize I have new balls of yarn to create with, almost like buying yarn.

Love your grannies and that beautiful scarf and mittens, they are such a lovely gift.
    Hugs,
    Meredith

  31. The matching scarves are a hoot! My impatient crafter self cannot imagine working on a project that takes so long. I just finished one that I've been working on for 3 weeks and I am SO ready to be done with it. I really admire people that can have multiple projects going at one time! And just have to say that (luckily) I have never seen a Die Hard move but know enough about them to know that I am NOT missing anything. Glad you had something else to keep your mind engaged!

  32. Wow, bet you felt like Chicken Licken - the sky is falling! Glad it was only the tile and nothing worse - and hopefully you're still safe and sound. Your knitting is lovely - the gifts are such a pretty shade, I bet they are coming in handy at the mo! Stay warm and safe and enjoy your yarn! Chrissie x

  35. Those squares are lovely and are coming together nicely. This weather has been dreadful, I for one will be happy to see the back of it.
I know how it feels to make boys scarves as they grow. I have written about what I call mandatory crochet hehe!

  36. How lovely is your mother in law? I adore that green she's used.

Your blanket is looking simply gorgeous, what a perfect distraction from the foul weather. I know exactly what you mean about the noise of your tile - we had a four inch bit of gubbins (cement-type stuff) tumble from ours and I thought the house was falling down.

    Have a super weekend.

  46. If you're wondering what to do with your rewound yarn, have you looked at ravelry.com? Probably too much to choose from but you can put in how much yarn you've got, what thickness etc. and you're bound to find something that appeals, even lots of free patterns… :)

  50. Ooooh I'm very distracted although the wind has died off this week (thankfully as We lost roof tiles but luckily nothing worse!) Our neighbour got a smashed windscreen though and one just got inside her house when tiles fell into her front garden :-o

Your squares look like they were a lovely welcome distraction. You probably did the right thing with your cowl too, I've tried to pull back and carry on and the time spent doing that I could have re-started and been much further ahead!

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
