Lights, Camera...

This week has been cold. Cold and bright. The last leaves are quickly falling from the trees and it's all starting to look and feel wintry out there now.  The light has been ever changing; dull and gloomy, then showery, then fleetingly, piercingly bright, then dark again. When I'm driving it bounces off the wet roads and makes me squint. Our house faces south and from first thing in the morning until late afternoon the hall, living room and the upstairs bedrooms are flooded with light. Now, don't get me wrong, I like this. The amount of natural light our house receives is one of the things I love about it, and makes me feel a little better about our big, ugly UPvc windows that really need replacing. But that sun is low and shines in at such an angle that it shows up every single crumb, hair, feather, fleck of dust and finger print, on every door, window and surface with horrible sharpness and clarity. It makes me wince.

But it's also quite beautiful and casts the most vivid shadows and reflections on walls and surfaces. I followed the light around the house one morning this week, looking anew at dusty corners of our home, noticing the light, not the dirt.

I received a delightful parcel last weekend from my very good friend Abigail (who I wish would start writing her blog again!). Abigail and I have been friends since we met in our English Literature A level class at sixth form college, in 1994. Good grief, I feel old writing that. She is one of my best friends in the world, a kindred spirit, but the thing is, apart form those years at college, we've hardly ever lived near each other. After doing our A levels we both went off to University at opposite ends of the country, then pursued our own post graduate courses, again at opposite ends of the country, then for the thirteen years I've been in Leeds she's lived in London, West Sussex, Cambridge, Croydon...not the north. We send each other a lot of parcels and cards. We also text, email and phone all the time, but we both cherish old fashioned cards coming through the old fashioned post. Impulsive and generous, she sends excellent parcels. Namely, this Diana F Camera, which arrived unexpectedly last Saturday and made me gasp when I opened it. It's an early Christmas present I think. Thank you Abigail! I am in love with the look of the camera as much as I am the idea of what I can do with it creatively. I'm also a little scared of it, but it comes with a book and some film so I have no excuse now but to have a go and see what this thing can do. Any advice is much appreciated!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Ours will be quiet, I think, and cosy, I hope.

  3. I love the light in a house too. So many new houses here have whole sides of houses with only one or two tiny windows. How horrible, I think. Of course, winter light does show up all the dust and crumbs which makes me crazy too, but still, I wouldn't trade it.

  5. What a lovely gift from a special friend! I have a very dear friend that I have had since the 5th grade. Her family moved to California when I was twelve, but we have always remained close, and visit one another as often as possible, and talk and text often as well. I love all of your sunny photos. Our house faces north, and that is not a good thing because the front of our house is always dark. We have to make a note of this for the next house we buy. Your weekend plans sound a lot like ours - a little Christmas decorating, relaxing, and lots of cooking. Enjoy!

  6. It is so interesting how the light changes during the different seasons, isn't it, Gillian. It has been crisp and sunny at the base of snow cloaked Mt. Hood in Oregon today. But the wind has made it bitingly bone chilling and whipped more leaves off the trees. I am ready to be cozy inside by the hearth for at least part of the weekend. I hope you have fun learning to use Abigail's wonderful gift to you :)

  7. Children grow so quickly my friend, those fingerprints on the glass windows... cherish them, even take a photo of them... because one day when they leave home you will wish there were still fingerprints on your windows!! Just say to yourself "I even cherish the mess" :)
Its so lovely to have such amazing friends isn't it? Of course lovely people like you deserve wonderful friends :) Much love, have a nice weekend xx

  8. What a wonderful gift ( the camera and the best friend ) I am sure you will have a lot of fun working with the camera and I look forward to seeing what you do. I agree with Tammy about the finger prints ... mine are just horrible, I live in a street where everyones windows seem to be immaculate ALL the time, then theres mine, 4 children and a Giant Breed Dog, you can imagine ... but I think oh well there is a sure sign of life in my house. Have a nice weekend. Charlotte. xx

  11. Looks a great present. Hope you have fun.
Our house is south facing too - and I totally know what you mean about the light and dust! I'm sure I've cleaned EVERYTHING and then out pops the sun to prove me wrong.
    Enjoy your weekend. X

  12. I've given up on my windows in the winter, I chase the children around with a cloth, I ask them not to put their grubby paws on the window...When I caught my littlest looking out the window with both hands flat against the glass, I told her she'd have to wash away those fingerprints. She proceeded to lick her hands and wipe the window. Ick! I prefer the little fingerprints...and what a fabulous pressie to come in the post to you! Diana is as much a statement piece of art for the shelf as she is a useful object, you have a wonderful friend! :-) Chrissie x

  14. lovely to have good light in your house. In the winter i have to follow the limited amount of light around in my house. In fact we are a bit desperate for light here! and it stays frosty for hours! love the new camera, Heather x

  15. Crumbs - so many crumbs - they seem to come from nowhere! But the flip side is the wonderful light - I suppose we can't have it both ways - sigh. Beautiful luminous photos - and as for the camera... x Jane

  16. What a lovely gift to receive from a special friend. It's funny how these friendships that we formed when we were back at school and uni never grow tired, they are embedded into our everyday life even when we live miles apart. I think it speaks volumes and I know how much I treasure mine. You have already managed to capture some beautiful images, I am loving all the light, my fave the last pic! I am sure you are going to have heaps of fun with this! Xoxo

  17. Hi Gillian, What a beautiful old camera!!!! We also have a lot of natural light in our house, but not directly into the house!!! We have very long and extremely hot summers so high ceilings and shade is very important to us!!! Love the light-play photo's!!! Have a cosy and fab weekend!!!

  20. What a gorgeous present and a gorgeous friend. I too totally get you about the light, it is the best sign of seasonal change here, a place with on season and very subtle changes from hot and wet to hot and dry. Enjoy the new old camera! mel x

  21. What a fab gift to receive, and a friendship to treasure. The beautiful sunlight showing all the dust etc is even more heightened in our home but two brown furry creatures who seem to manage to leave hair all over the place, within mere minutes of me hoovering - or wet snout marks on the windows..etc etc. But you're right, I need to stop moaning and appreciate the beauty of the light too :-) Thanks for the reminder.
    Happy weekend, stay warm

  30. What a great parcel. It will be so much fun learning how to use the camera. I think it is lovely that you went round your house noticing the light rather than the dust. Will try that next time the sun comes I and shows up all the smears the dog's nose makes on it as he peers out into the street! Love the shadows and shapes on the cacti picture.

  32. Love the Perrier pic in particular. The camera is gorgeous, I m not up to any advice, but if you've never developed our own film you would love it, and it's worth seeing if any of the local colleges have a day course, black and white film I think!
